I just realized where the miscommunication between Obi-Wan, Luke, and R2 came from! R2 was saying he was looking for "Master Obi-Wan Kenobi." Luke assumed R2 meant this as a master and servant relationship, and thus Obi-Wan owned R2. However, what was really going on is that R2 was calling him Master, as in Jedi Master, as an honorific. Obi-Wan never considered R2 as someone that could be owned, so dismissed the idea of him ever owning R2 when Luke brought it up.
That and the fact that R2 belonged to Padmé and Anakin, and never Obi-Wan. Even R4 Obi-Wan didn’t “own” in the sense that he kept it in his possession/service, it was more a role of stewardship the droid had to his starfighter. All of which Jedi like Obi-Wan considered assets at their disposal rather than material possessions that they owned themselves. Thus, from a certain point of view, Obi-Wan never owned a droid, and especially not R2.
@nilok7, not quite true. Obi-Wan knew droids were owned, and even considered R2 as being owned by Anakin, as presented in the Clone Wars concept mentioned in the video. R2 was actually a rarity in this sense as most Jedi just "borrowed" droids from the temple, and never actually considered themselves as owning them, personally. If anything, Kenobi would have known that R2 had went of with Senator Organa, and part of his brain would be wondering how such a droid would have gotten to him, and that could have been part of the dismissal. One of the reasons that Luke could go by Skywalker was partially due to the minimal (if any) amount of contact he had with his old friend, the well-known Bail Organa.

I thought somewhere in the movies that the two droids had their memories wiped clean? It was a small, passing part maybe at the end of Ep 3? Pretty sure this was written in to explain why the droids didn't remember Kenobi in Ep 4 ANH. Update: I guess it was just C-3PO's memory that was wiped. I found the clip.
Bail Organa said "have the protocol Droid's mind wiped" to which R2 chuckled. He did this because 3P0 is a loud mouth and he didn't want him giving away information on the whereabouts of Obi-Wan, Yoda, Luke & Leia.
I remember another Star Wars video that touched on why Obi Won didn't seem to reconize R2D2... in that video it was pointed out he did reconize R2D2.. in the Star Wars novel Star Wars: A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy. in the scene after Han tells everyone they are safe and he lost who was chaseing them............ Han saw Obi-Won motion to R2D2 who came closer then lightly pat him and mumble something low to R2D2 "nice to see you again old friend. " (or something to that effect).. which shows Obi-Won did reconize R2D2.
I think an aspect that should also be considered here in the annalays of these scenes is that Obi-Wan was sent to Tatooine to hide. After two decades certain habits, such as playing his hand close to his chest had become ingrained in his personality. The performance by Alec Guinness was masterful in that if you rewatch this scene now after watching this video, you can see that he's carefully weighing what to reveal and what to keep hidden.
All Obi-Wan said, in "Episode IV", (upon encountering R2D2, regarding the droid's claim of being the property of Obi-Wan) was that he didn't remember OWNING a droid, before, particuñarñy a modern R-2 unit. Since R2's mission, was to deliver Leia's message to Kenobi, and the droids had been captured by the Jawas & then sold to Owen Lars, R2 needed to convey this to Luke (& do so without revealing his mission); R2's sensors might also have overheard/intercepted Uncle Owen telling Luke that they needed to take r2 to get his memory bank erased, once Luke had begun asking questions about kenobi (that Lars didn't want to have to answer). R2's fleeing Uncle Owen's homestead was to find Kenobi & deliver Leia's message, and the small bit of Leia's encrypted hologram that he revealed to Luke, was done to prompt Luke into helping carry out r2's mission. And anything R2 told 3po to convey to Luke about being the property of Kenobi, was done both to serve as a cover-story, for his highly secret mission & also to assert the droid's independence after being abducted & sold into servitude by the Jawas. And Given the prevalence of droids, throughout the Galaxy, it's completely plausible that Kenobi might not have remembered any specific droid, as droids function as servants, and in R2 & 3pO's first appearance, in the trilogy, are essentially carrying out a task on behalf of Leia & the Rebels.
I wonder how no other astromech in the whole galaxy was ever produced with blue markings. And protocol golden droids are very common also. Why would obi have to recognize machines anyway?
Attachments were not the problem. It was the Jedi being too damn stupid to not pick up on Palpatine to stop him. Including Yoda knowing it was gonna happen. Anakin shouldve been able to talk to his higher ups, but they made it seem like he was an outsider and made it seem like there was something wrong with him. Jedi screwed this up big time
I like these little stories even though I don't think of them as canon. Not everything needs to be explained or have a story behind it. I realize George messed up by not rewatching his previous films before writing the prequels but still.
Wasnt Obi-Wan working with the small People and their Desertcrawler filled with Droids , i mean he could seeing lots of Astromech Droids of R2 Series in these 20years, forgetting or recongnising could be difficult.
I always found it amusing that people assume Obi Wan didn't recognize R2D2, when what he said was "I don't remember ever owning a droid.". He didn't own a droid. However, it's clear that he knew R2 and what the droid was capable of, such as when he said R we could interpret the entire Imperial network.
With Luke and Padme he put the pieces together during his interaction during his Holo meeting with Palpatine during ESB. In regards to Leia when he was probing Luke's mind during his fight with Luke at the end of ROTJ.
I still don't understand why we would expect Kenobi to recognize the droids. It's a galaxy filled with, what, gazillions of life forms and zillions of droids probably to go along with them. R2-D2 and C-3PO are model numbers not names. Tell me you can tell the difference between two of the exact make, model and colour of a car off the assembly line. There must have been millions at least of R2 units in the whole of the galaxy , less so of 3PO because I'm supposing it has a more specific roll.
Canon or not, I don't get the impression Kenobi forgot them or didn't recognize them. "I don't recall ever owning a droid." was more of a nod to R2's free agency since Kenobi and the rest of the Jedi didn't own the droids- the Republic did, and the Republic is no more, so R2 is a Freedroid. Not only did he recognize them, he foresaw them coming. Hence the lack of surprise. But that's just my personal take.
The real answer is Lucas screwed up. BUT droids are like iphones, they are everywhere and who remembers which ones you saw before, there probably 1000 r2d2 units out there
He did not recognise them at all because he had never met them before. When star wars was made the only thing that existed was Star wars. which do you pick as the true sequel to star wars, Splinter in the minds eye or Empire strikes back. The more merchandise that is added the more holes you have to fill, the more revisions that have to be made, The more books, comics and now of course Shit Disney films that have to be De-Canonized.
I mean, he didn't say that he didn't remember R2. He said that he didn't remember owning R2, or any droid for that matter, which is true. All from a certain point of view. The wording is very important.
Considering the sh*t that R2 and Kenobi went through since the blockade on Naboo until the birth of the twins, he should remember every scratch on that droid's frame. He literally was with him from the childhood of Anakin until the birth of his children. Twenty years isn't going to fuzz over an item that was a very integral part of and of saving your life numerous times. But hey, it's fiction, gotta keep the story moving.
In my opinion It's all retconned non sense, it's pretty clear from the film that he does not know the droids even to the point of saying I don't recall owning any droids but I'm not super familiar with canon or legends so I could be way off? I think it's just them trying to fix one of many inconsistencies that the prequels created which is still much better then having to fix the mess the sequel trilogy has created.

C3po and R2 were us. They were how we were suppose to see this hero myth played out. Thats why Lucas had them in the stories.
R2 is such a good little droid, you'd be hard pressed to find a better friend and companion, even compared to organics
A protocol droid and an R2 unit. It would seem they were both fairly common.
It is odd that Obi-wan's comment about not remembering owning a droid is not included in this video
!
"These bloody droids just.....won't.....go.........away!!
This make me sad Anakin you could of been here
Yea this is always quietly on my mind. Just obi wons thoughts in ep 4 alone
He would rather seem to not remember an old friend than tell Luke the truth.
Funny how Ani/Vader had no affection for C-3PO, the droid he created as a kid.
I always found it amusing that people assume Obi Wan didn't recognize R2D2, when what he said was "I don't remember ever owning a droid.". He didn't own a droid. However, it's clear that he knew R2 and what the droid was capable of, such as when he said R we could interpret the entire Imperial network.
the droids wouldn't remember there memory was wiped
In Legends, when did Vader make the connection between Luke, Leia, and Padme?
Obi-Wan: "Sees R2-D2" Oh shit
R2-D2: B*tch where was you?
CP30: Who is he?
Obi-Wan: I'm sorry R2
this guy is the expert of dragging out a video lmao. Makes it so much longer than it should be
What would happen if Georg Lucas would remake the whole 9 Movies, would it be a better Star Wars Story or worse than the Disney one?
Why tf did I get a Spanish Colgate ad in this video?
"I don't remember owning a droid".
”Ah shit here we go again”
Tbh, I wouldn't be able to distinguish my personal Commodore64 from the any other one.
Kenobi would have said......
Hello there
I left a like for *Reunions*
I always thought the droids had their memories wiped after episode 3.
Only C-3PO did.
Obi def knew he was gonna die the day he saw them again
Canon or not, I don't get the impression Kenobi forgot them or didn't recognize them. "I don't recall ever owning a droid." was more of a nod to R2's free agency since Kenobi and the rest of the Jedi didn't own the droids- the Republic did, and the Republic is no more, so R2 is a Freedroid. Not only did he recognize them, he foresaw them coming. Hence the lack of surprise. But that's just my personal take.
The real answer is Lucas screwed up.
BUT droids are like iphones, they are everywhere and who remembers which ones you saw before, there probably 1000 r2d2 units out there
I thought the droids had they memory wiped that why c3po and r2 didn't remember obi wan
Only C3po was mind-wiped, while R2 was the only one who still has his memories.
These are the droids iam looking for
I believe obi wan new R2 D2 on 100%.
The novel is trying to retcon. None of the Star Wars story was really planned out. Lucas made it up as he went along.
I love how things can be pieced together, just like creationists do with the Bible. Amazing!
you did own a droid his name was R4! lol
So is this canon? Or did Disney decide it wasn’t?
stream?
He did not recognise them at all because he had never met them before. When star wars was made the only thing that existed was Star wars. which do you pick as the true sequel to star wars, Splinter in the minds eye or Empire strikes back. The more merchandise that is added the more holes you have to fill, the more revisions that have to be made, The more books, comics and now of course Shit Disney films that have to be De-Canonized.
I mean, he didn't say that he didn't remember R2. He said that he didn't remember owning R2, or any droid for that matter, which is true. All from a certain point of view. The wording is very important.
You should make a video if r2 recognize Yoda in empire strikes back
He certainly does. There are quite a few subtle little interactions between R2 and Yoda.
What Obi Wan said was true... from a certain point of view.
I have no idea who these droids are, as the prequels won't be written for another 30 years
Legends no longer exists...
R2 missed Anakin. 😟
I chalked it up as he was playing dumb
Obi-wan only Said that he never ownned a droid. Thats the truth r2 and 3cpo never where obi-wans robots they where anakins robots.
I was told OBI wan.. Knew who they we're.. But that he hid it from Luke so he could keep him in the dark about knowing his dad
It’s so boring here on Exegol.
Always thought it was weird that, although Anakin built C-3PO by hand, it was R2-D2 they developed the bond with in all subsequent media.
I was the 555th like and there were 5 dislikes.
Jason Black much 5
I dont get why C-3PO and R2 needed to be in the prequels. It was so unnecessary
Obi-Wan sure was a bit of a joker. Can't blame him, considering the amount of non-humorous moments of his life at this point.

Hahahahahahahaha!!!
Star Wars is tha greatest thing that has ever happened to cinema, however, there are a few things here and there that were kind of like, “MISTAKES”!!!
Star Wars fans refuse to admit that, and so as a result, there is a bunch of phony, made up, BS, like this!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
When George Lucas did A NEW HOPE, he didn’t have all tha details of tha prequels worked out. He didn’t anticipate making them at tha time, or he woulda started with episode 1.
Also, after all tha shit that Obi-Wan and tha droids went through together, tha Clone Wars series, and tha PREQUEL TRILOGY, you’d think it’d be just a little tough for him to not remember any of it!!!!!
Weak... Really weak.
