"The girl I used to love
Lives in this yellow house.
Yesterday she passed me by,
She doesn't want to know me now."
If you have not heard, I’m going to be hanging out in the Zero-Mod booth at the “Guitar and Bass Expo” in Wyomissing, PA on Saturday, August 19th.
I’ll be playing along live to some of my favorite songs (including this one), on some of my favorite, Zero-Mod equipped basses. It’ll be just like my channel - except with the potential for mistakes!
Admission is free and they are running shuttle busses from NYC and Philadelphia to the show and I’m going to be giving out some cool TJH3113 stickers!

We’re off to see Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Donald Felder tonight and that was going to get you an old “Blue Collar Man” cover that I’ve had lying around. However, I decide to save that cover for another time (a band member’s birthday or something like that) and post this instead. Mostly because I wanted to get it out of the way before the guitar show thing as it’s probably the only non-Rush material that I am going to do there.
About a month or so ago Facebook friend, Jennifer Hampton, left this bold comment on my page, “Hey, dude. Just wondering if I could put in a special request? Perhaps a little The Who "The Real Me"? Please? ” The only song that I’ve received more requests for than “The Real Me” is a song about a certain citrus fruit by Led Zeppelin. I let Jennifer down easy with my standard answer to that request, saying “Maybe one of these days. If I remember correctly, it's just a hair sharp or flat of concert pitch. That's why I put it down. I usually work on a couple of songs at a time and hate having to stop and retune between songs. So lazy.” That’s when my old friend, Jim Trice chimed in, saying, “I could help you with that”. Some of you might remember Jim’s name from any videos I’ve done where the music has been pitch corrected or brought up to concert pitch. I usually try and thank him when he does that for me and he's been helping me out with that for some time how. Next thing I knew, there were two copies of the song in my in-box. One was full speed and the other was a slowed-down version. I guess Jim didn’t think I could handle it full speed. Oh, and both were at concert pitch. Now, I had no excuse not to learn the song.
I don’t think it came out too bad. I believe I got all the “money” notes, I just had to skimp a bit on some of the very fast “twiddley-bits”, as The Ox was capable of these incredible bursts of speed that my fingers are just not able to muster. And as an added bonus, I also did a version using the slowed down version of the song that might be of some help to anyone wanting to learn the song for themselves. I’ll post that later on tonight. I think I'll put it in my "Bass Tutorials" playlist.
In case you had not picked up on it, the song is, “The Real Me” by “The Who” off of their Quadrophenia album which came out in 1973 and features the late, great John Entwistle, who I had the pleasure of seeing a couple of times before his death.
I’m playing the Old Guild B-301 that’s been outfitted with a Zero-Mod thumb-rest.
And thanks again to Jim Trice for his unsolicited assistance in this matter.

I can't explain how much I've been anticipating you covering this song. Your covers are always the best way to learn a song.
Me too!!! this is one of my favorite bass songs!
I cant explain? What a great idea for a song title!
Wi TuLow the who have a song called I Can't Explain
Junior Ramirez You have a firm grip of the obvious.
Wi TuLow thanks
I see 3 lead guitar players downvoted this masterpiece. Long live the legacy of John Entwistle, may The Ox continue to roam
WOW! Man, you are the first of hundreds of bassists on You Tube that have tried to the Real Me by The Who and not one has even come close, the wrong notes wrong beats, tempo, everything and you nailed it! I mean exactly! I could have sworn that was John Entwistle himself playing! Again, you absolutely nailed it amigo. You get a like and a subscribe by me definately!
Thanks so much!
How the heck did Entwistle come up with those lines? what a savant.
tpbart he actually recorded this bass line first try as a joke and they kept it since it sounded the best. Go figure
Thanks 160! Genius bass players never get due credit. Entwistle IS the WHO. Wow.
Funny - as good as Troy is and he makes so much look easy.. he was workin' hard on this one.
If that's true, it's just testament to how much of a fuckin' genius he was!
@@tpbart Both he and Keith Moon fully deserves(d) as much credit as Pete and Roger for the success of the Who!
The ox would have approved! Great job man
Absolutely one of the stand out basslines of all time. There aren't that many bassist who can do a good job of using the bass like a lead instrument, but Entwistle certainly could
Bravo! Thunder fingers, the Ox etc, Entwistle took playing bass in a rock band to a whole new level!
Thanks.
Agree. He nailed it. Nice achievement!
~ Why do you people keep adding an h to Entwistle's name? No h!
error corrected
This is why people play bass.
ye. that's why.
Exactly.
Brilliant rendering of a phenomenal song and bass part. John had a huge catalog of bass genius, but this one should impress even the most casual observer. Great job, Troy!
Thank you so much. I'm glad that you liked it.
You might have had to "skimp a bit"? Where? That was about the baddest bass playing I've seen from you yet. This post doesn't need a thumb down button. Thanks for all you do for us.
RIP John Entwhistle! This is by far the hardest bass line in the world to play. Notes all up and down the neck, 16th notes, and staying spot on with the drummer. Well done, John would be proud.
M Cool *32nd notes
Idk about that, but Rip John entwhistle
John was so musical and of course he had to follow Keith and I think that had a lot to do with what he came up with for the bass parts.
@@JOHNWLOUCKS when The Who got a real drummer in Kenny Jones Entwistle was enabled to really open up
I thought so too until I heard "Dreaming From the Waist".
THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! Please do more Entwistle. You rock!!
Outstanding! Covering the Ox can't be easy. Nice job.
Crushed it! Love that "get out of my face" attitude, tone and power. I love that Guild... Thanks!
The tone is exactly like the original! Nice job!
Lol a certain citrus fruit by zeppelin, i wish thee good luck if you ever take on that monster of a song.
Oh, I dunno. I'm a die-hard Zep fan, but Entwistle's performance in this song gives anything the great JPJ did a run for its money, at the very least.
As good as it is there's nothing fancy about that baseline or any other bass line from jpj.
Awesome cover of an equally awesome song!
First heard The Real Me in '89 on the W.A.S.P. album, The Headless Children, the bass line blew me away!!
Seeing/hearing them play it live on that tour made it sound even better!
Thank you. I remember hearing Johnny Rod's rendition of the song and thought it wounded great.
THE pinnacle of Bass Lead songs.
It just might be.
Great job! Taking on the Ox is no mean feat. RIP John Entwistle!
The amazing thing is, Entwistle didn't intend to play this on the final recording... He was just messing about in the studio, but the rest of the Who thought it sounded so good that it ended up on the final version. It absolutely makes the song, yet it just sits so nicely between Townshend's power chords and Moonie's thundering drums.
Troy, Awesome cover !! RIP John Entwistle
Hit send by mistake. Amazing playing as always. You have made learning fun but challenging which is great for me. Pushes me to be a better player and build some dexterity to my playing. Thanks for the posting.✌🏻
That's a heck of a song to play. Entwistle was a bad ass bass player and he seems always to be bored. The Who. What an amazing rock band!
It is, isn't it. I don't think he was bored, some people just don't find it necessary to pull porno faces while they're playing.
@@TJH3113LOL! "pull porno faces" never heard that term before, but always noticed that Clapton did it in the early days. I have a guitar player friend that does it all the time also.
Perfect cover of John Entwistle's work. You keep on amazing me friend!
OMG did Entwistle give you bass lessons? You play just like he does. I love the finger picking techniques John was famous for.
Ha ha… I wish! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Rob. Take care!
Fuck yeah!!!
YAY I've been waiting for this one!!! Thanks very inspiring as always. I
love the difference in the lighting also it's a nice change. I think Mr
Entwistle is smiling down on this video lol.
Love the sound of that Guild.
It's one of my favorites too. Thanks.
Holy smoke. I've always knew this was a badass bass line. It was more than a pleasure to see how it's played. The Who is the core of modern rock-n-roll. Each musician in this band is a virtuoso. I'm glad to have lived in those times. Our music will be remembered as some of the best of humanity.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Could a stringed instrument player explain what exactly is going on with the arm movements at 0:20? I'm guessing it's a subconscious "getting your bearings" kind of thing. Is there a name for it? I never see beginners doing it, but I've seen guys who are intermediate or professional players do it often.
It looks as though, in this case, I was about to come in on the wrong note, a halfstep lower than where I should have been. It leads in on a slight slide, so I had to readjust my starting point.
best bassist in the best rock band.....you did a great job covering difficult song!
Truth! Thanks a lot Michael!
The Who's rhythm section made them sound as loud and powerful as a whole as$ marching band.
Truth!
The Ox. Guy was a genius man. One of the best. Nice going as always my good dude. ✌
He sure was. Thank you.
awesome job as always - next up 5:15 ? always look forward to new vids
A true Entwistle-gasm \m/
Absolutely top drawer stuff old chap. Knocked it well and truly outta the park 👍
Big Thumbs Up. The Ox would be proud...
Thanks a lot.
Love hearing those bass lines. Theres so much going on all the time. That's no Alembic but you have a great sound going on there too!! Great video!!!
Thank you!
This is it
Must have been a pain in the ass to learn and memorize this song! I think it's time for TJH3113 to post a "learning difficulty rating" and a "playing difficulty rating" for each song in the descriptions.
Tight run, Definitely one the most underrated albums of our time!
OH HELL YES
OMG! You can play anything. Tried to learn this when it first came out. Never did get it. Now that I can watch you do it so perfectly, it's on my bucket list.
To be honest, it wasn't as bad as I'd always feared it would be.
Wow dude...best isolated bass cover I've heard of this!!! Is there correct tabs for this?
Thanks a lot. I'm sorry, but I don't have any tabs.
@@TJH3113 I'll just reference this video to learn it correctly
Awesome! Great job! Love that song. I played it with my old band. Check out the video on my channel.
The most elusive for me to get it done right. But of course you did. That Guild tone nailed it!!!!!!
Thanks Jonathan!
my oh my ... you pulled it off = A+
Thanks!
Excellent job! Well-done!
Thank you very much, Todd!
And yet again you go and make one of the most amazing Bass parts ever look so easy.. thanks you for the post and dig the Guild tone..
Great performance!
Thanks Alan!
Sweet cover. I heard a story that Entwhistle was mad or dicking around when he first played bass on this song, thinking it would piss Pete off. Of course Pete loved it. Or so the story goes.... Love that bass line.
Ever consider doing Another Tricky Day? I dig the bass in that song too. Thanks for the killer vids.
I heard a similar story about Randy Rhoad's outro guitar solo on "Mr. Crowley." No idea if either or both are true, but I could see it happening lol
Thunder fingers
It needs more cowbell
I hear ya!
SO WHEN ARE YOU GOING ON TOUR WITH ROGER AND PETE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My god. John Entwistle is god.
Justin Abernethy He is in fact the Roman God of Bass.
i met god .
Love it!!! Greatest rock band of all time, IMHO.
Thanks.
Woo hoo!!!
GREAT JOB!! I'm a half-ass bass player. This is one of my favorite bass parts. I wish I could play it. For the alas, I cannot.. I can't play every note in my head though hahaha
Thanks a lot! If you really want to play it, you will. Time and patience is all it takes.
Excellent bass playing....but oh Boy....the masks in the backround to this song.....man, you makes me shudder.....😱
Thanks. DeathStudios!
awesome brother 🤝✌
Thanks ✌️
Ahh, this is such a dirty bassline, I love it! 5:15 next?
thanks for listen my asked Brazil say thank you
Yes! Awesome thumbs up performance a true artist! Thanks for covering the piece. JW
Been waiting for this - And on the Guild no less...BOOYAH!
I dont often leave comments, but you sir are 1 hell of bass player!!!
Thank you very much for the kind words.
Yep, he just did that.
trying to pick jaw up off of floor..... damn
Incredible job, thanks for posting. "The Real Me" has long had - in my view - the best bass part of any rock song. As well as just being a fantastic song. And the performer here seems to have nailed every bass note. If there's any variance from John Entwistle's original, he might have actually improved on it.
Thanks Andrew, for watching and taking the time to leave such a very nice comment. Take care!
As ALWAYS my Friend..............Watching You play Bass on ANY song (especially an Entwistle one!!!) is just a DELIGHT to my senses and eyeballs!!! Lol. Although,I'm a drummer,I DO understand the complexities of the Bass as basically, they both intertwine with one another on rhythm and tempo!!! So watching this one,was a JOY Sir-Troy!!! EXCELLENT Job!!! :)
great! What an awesome baseline by thunder fingers!
Thanks David!
Really enjoyed this! Have you ever done a comparison to the cover that W.A.S.P did of this song from their Headless Children Album?
I'm glad to hear that. I thought that Johnny Rod did a great job... not note for note, but, in some ways, his version made more sense in certain spots.
Very good. John Entwistle eternally, congrats !!!! by Milton from Brazil.
Many thanks Milton!
Not a note for for note cover, but putting your own mark on this classic just works, you sir, are an extremely talented bassist-awesome job and thank you for the work you put it covering this-Bravo maestro bravo!
Thanks a lot. I normally try to just recreate the part the way it was recorded. Any personality of my own that may seep through is not intentional. If I do something of my own, I'll usually announce that in the description.
This is very, very, very difficult to play. I'm a converted guitarist and initially found the more rhythmical or slap style so easy.....but jeez trying to play something note-based like this, my right hand literally can't handle it. There are so many fiddly bits which my hands flinch at each time. Fair play. you got as close as I've seen to the original. And to any songwriters out there, don't sack your bass player else you'll end up having to play it yourself lol
Yeah, it was a pretty tough one. John Entwistle is tough to cover because he's such a spontaneous player... you never know where he's going. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment.
Inherited my dad’s 77 Guild B302 and can’t wait to get it out of the case after watching/hearing your very impressive take on “ the real me “ , i see a 2nd Guild in the background dude you are the man
Very nice! I prefer just using the bridge p/u... so much so, that I had the neck removed from my B-302. The Guild in the background came with a warped neck, maxed out truss rod, and a twisted headstock. That being said, it still played fairly well.
Great work. Nice rumbly throaty plucky tone too. My old Ibanez Ripper sounds a little like that.
Thank you kindly!
I hit a wall about half way through struggling with the timing. Here's my tip - use this (and the slow version) to get the fingering, then play along to the original (this is soundtrack version which is why it varies from some of the tab out there but close to the UG 'official' tab - although I hear this as more accurate) ua-cam.com/video/H2h1MY70uag/v-deo.html. This forced me to listen to what the band was doing rather than focusing on following the bass on this and helped me crack the timing; now up to 2 minutes and I think the rest will be a downhill ride :-) Definitely improving my playing learning this and giving me some nice runs to quote elsewhere. I'm probably breaking the 'longest time to learn a bassline' record but worth every minute, thanks Troy
Thanks for watching and weighing in on your experience and offering some of the tips that helped you out. I'm glad you are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.
Wow man .. bad ass. That's some pretty tough bass lines to get down. Sounded pretty well spot on. Great job man!!
Thanks so much!
A bass apleyer's perspective. It's not exceptionally fast (aside from a few single note trills), it's just utterly relentless. The rhythm patterns vary so you're not really repeating many phrase and when you do then there's a variation to trip you up. It's not impossible to play but hard to learn, I've been going for days and I'm only halfway through...
Very well put. It's the slight variations in a lot of these songs that are a challenge to sort out. If I were learning these songs to play live, I probably would not put as much effort into getting them as close as I try to in these covers. I'd just pick some of my favorite riffs and go with them.
This sounds great!
Thanks a lot.
Heading up to Tanglewood for the end of the season Quadrophenia concert or is this offering merely coincidental?
OK Going to learn this one next. I've said it before. Your quality mix sound is great and can clearly see what your playing and can match it. Makes learning fun and fast! Thank you for posting! Love the masks as well.
Rock on! Thanks so much Mike. Take your time... one note at a time! You'll get it.
I like the choice of the Guild!!!!!!!!! I have a B-302. I always hated it, until I let it do what it wants to do, and after I played it like a Ric it sounded great. Wish there was a 5 string version of that.
Me too! They are among my favorites and I put their pickups in a number of other basses as well. I was looking to have a 5 string built and, when I was looking for a p/u that would sound remotely like this one, a few people suggested a Nordstrand? Big Single.
Just what the doctor ordered during my Friday eve commute. If that don't get you pumped up, I don't know what will.
Great job!
I just want to crawl through my screen and steal that sick Red Rickenbacker 4003 that I've been wanting for months
If you can crawl through the screen you can have it.
Troy thanks for that! You captured the vibe of The OX right there! Great job!
Thank you!
Fucking Awesome WOW holy shit fuckity fuck!
Thanks.
Cool bass, man. Always enjoy your covers. Helps me nail the correct phrasing and notes. Cheers
Thanks, it's one of my favorites. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
thank you for all you do ! laughter and good times ! John E. is proud !
My pleasure! Thanks and take care!
the ox was a fucking genius, brilliant cover
Entwistle low action. Well done Troy!
Truth! Thank you!
Outstanding job wizard. I have always thought that this song could have played only by the ox.
Thanks. It took a while, but I was able to cob it together.
Brilliant! The perfect amount of the base over the rest of the song. They should have mixed it this way on the album
Thanks a lot!
You sir..... just blew my mind!!!!!!!
Thanks.
Excellence. Thanks Troy!
Thank you.
I have been working on this for a few weeks, I do not use on line tab sites because they are mostly wrong ,but you sir nailed it ,this is has close to the isolated bass recording as you can find.....excellent
On the very rare occasions that I've consulted tab sites (out of desperation) I've been sorely disappointed. Thanks!
The fake monsters behind you are watching you cover a True Monster of a Bass Player.
Truth!
Cool!! How long did it take you tooooo learn that???
I think you might be turning into John Entwistle. Not only in your great bass playing, but also in your stoic facial expression.
Haha... I wish. Thanks.
Well done, sir! One of favorites!
