Making A Granny Square Balaclava

- This video is very different than my last balaclava video! I personally love this one better :) *Just remember that my "tutorial" videos are a little different than the normal ones you might watch. I do show you the steps, but I'm also making this for the first time, sooo it's more of a watch me make mistakes so you don't have to! lol*
CHAPTERS:
Intro: 0:00
Making a Granny Square: 3:48
Hiding yarn tails on the Granny Square: 15:23
Attaching the Squares: 18:09
Making a boarder / trim: 26:41
Reveal: 28:05
Final Thoughts: 28:31
First off if you want to know the measurement of the squares/ balaclava there are diagrams through out the video.
THE GRANNY SQUARE MEASUREMENTS:
8 x 8 inches OR 21cm x 21cm
I made 7 of them
Yarn was Medium 4 weight and 100% Acrylic
WHAT I USED:
5mm / US H 8 Crochet hook.
I unfortunately do not know the name of the yarn colours or how much I used, because I was using all my left over yarn from other projects and they no longer had their labels on them.
But I do know that all the yarn was a Medium 4 weight and 100% Acrylic.
And 90% of the yarn I used was the Impeccable brand.
Also just an fyi (don’t think i really need to put this out there) but I wouldn’t recommend wearing one while driving. Or at least pull the hood part back, that way your peripheral vision isn’t blocked.

I’m a 32 year old who graduated from film school, almost 10 years ago. Now I have decided to put my education to some good use! - Навчання та стиль
The lesson I’ve learned after doing many tutorials: always watch the full video before you try to make something. My first project, a patchwork cardigan, i did not watch the video before sowing the squares together (once I make a square I immediately sow it together) so i ended up doing it wrong and because I had only bought so much yarn, I wasn’t able to fix it. I just mentioned this because she realized she had an extra square, and if you are watching how things go you can mess up. Lesson: watch the full video before you start.
I'm gonna make one of the but fore my cat
Omg I can't wait to try this! It looks amazing!
thank u so much for making this video!! I love how you also went into detail explaining what some stitches did or why you did them, it really helped me when I needed to read the stitches ❤
Im almost done making it and it is so beautiful! Thank you so much!
This is beautiful! Can't wait to try and make it. Thank you!!
This made me wonder why there isnt a universal granny square standard. I love it, great job! ❤
the drawing helps!!!!!! thank you for explaining the neck squares so well
I had to re-do the placement of the neck squares like 4 times before I figured it out for myself! haha so i had to make sure I explained them properly in my video 😊
@@michelle_jasek seeing you struggle and figure it out makes me appreciate the diagrams all the more 😈
MY FAMILY HAD A COUCH WITH THAT MATERIAL IN THE 90's NO WAY.
I'm 62 years old. I used to own that couch. It was given to me by my sister-in-law who had bought a new one. I really liked it. It's handy to be able to remove the cushion covers to wash them. Couches now a days...not so much.
Love this it's so pretty. Definitely making it
I made this and after a few idiotic mistakes it turned out pretty cute!! Thanks for the tutorial 💞
I made this for my first crochet project (besides tea towels lol)! Thanks so much for an awesome video!! 🥰
Just picked up some yarn today, gonna start my new hobby 🎉
Just subbed oh my goodness you are amazing and I love this idea. The hood is gorgeous!
This is just adorable! And it looks great on you 😊
Thank you 😊
I must make this! I`m new to crocheting, but I`ve knocked out a couple of easy cardigans and I think I`m ready to tackle something with granny squares. I just want to be a granny square babushka!! Also, I LOVE your sweater in this video.
I absolutely LOVE this❤
Loved your video and your energy!! You made it look easy... I'm starting to make one, hope it looks at least half as good as yours haha 🥰
I'm making this! It's so STINKING CUTE!
Eeeeek I love this! I think I need to make one!
You’re giving me major Disney Anastasia vibes!!
7 squares
5 mm crochet hook
4:17 sqaure tutorial
If you don't like weaving ends in granny squares, try next time "weave in as you go" method. This is how I hide mine last time.🙂
" Gramma from the Old Country vibe " --- I really wish I hadn't been sipping my coffee at that very second . LOL. 😂😂
when you said you were skipping the “magic loop” i actually jumped for joy
I’m new here. I found this video because I want to make a balaclava, but now I’m distracted and hyperventilating because I want to make a granny square pillow with those same colors and I love it soooo muchhhhchajahshdndnd 😍😍
Had see this on Instagram thanks show us will make this weekend
Why didn’t I watch this before following along 😭 when she decided to take out one of the squares I’ve already attached them all together
Help pleeease :) the instructions were amazing in this video but I got lost at the point of attaching the neck part to the hood :(. My hood is fully connected, so from here I need to connect the neck to the hood but offsetting by 5cm on each side as shown in 22:42? I got confused with which squares need to be stitched using the "miss the 6th" method. Sorry hoping someone can help as I really want to finish this project!
Agreed!! Super confused
Did we ever get clarification on this? I am confused at the same point as well. I think she’s talking about connecting the back neck and hood squares, but I’ll definitely have to wing it and hope it comes out well. 💁🏻♀️
I figured this out if anyone needs help. When you're connecting the hood to the neck(in the back after offsetting), you will use the slip stitch 5 times as normal and then skip a stitch in the hood, but go into the next stitch on the neck. After I really sat down and thought about it, it made sense. Sew(pun intended), when you sew the back area this way, it will be offset and then you'll sew the two partials of the middle hood section to the one square in the front(neck square). You'll need to make sure to loosely fold the balaclava as it will be assembled because I made the mistake of offsetting too much and had to frog. If anyone has questions, let me know! This is such a fun and cute project!
just wondering tho- can you make the granny squares smaller if you want the hood to fit better on your head? ty!
It ahould work. Make the squares smaller, but you may need to make more squares.
Hi. I just came up your channel. I'd love to try this out soon.
I am just about to finish mine from your first video and I wish I could send it to you 😭😭😭😂😂😂 I did horrible.
It looks so cute and I plan on doing it but I notice you do live in a winter place with snow like me, I wonder if you were cold since there are a lot of holes in it?
maybe stich a worm hood inside
@@michalamir8759 Yeah, I guess. I'll have to look how to do that. Thanks
Yes I believe that five layers is a little bit smaller than six layers I am not to sure about four layers if the yarn strength when you wash the balaclava
Your crocheted balaclava looks very lovely anyway
also, after chaining 1 did you go and chain 4 more as you did in the first? Tried slowing the playback to see what you did but too fast 10:15
does the square for the top of the head have to be bigger?
Hi, I am so confused! So I have laid out all my granny squares like in 22:42 - when attaching the bottom row of granny squares to the row above, is that when I do the skipping the sixth stitch and if so would it still like this diagram once the bottom row is attached? or does the stitch skipping happen at a different point of putting it altogether (and if so when)? not sure if this comment makes sense just really confused but love the pattern and want to finish!!
I’m looking for the same answer :)
i’m super new to crocheting i wanted to ask.. does it matter what design granny squares to make? or can i make any granny square but just be able to attach it together?
i think you could do it with any squares you want as long as they are all the same size and match the dimensions of the ones in the video( 8x8 inches) which you could accomplish by adding extra rounds to whichever square you are creating if necessary.
Otherwise, if the squares you make are smaller, the balaclava itself will be smaller and might not fit the same as the creators. Hopefully that makes sense lol
Any should work ❤
I NEED IT
Do you have the pattern? Thx great vid
i love it , how much yarn did you use for this project?
No shade for real for real, but it's so funny to hear someone think that yarn from 2017 is old yarn! My old ass thinks any of my yarn after the 90's is still new.
Wow! Hello. My friends call my style granny core! I also love crafting. We should be friends. I also host tea parties!
If you are using H8 5mm crocheting hook your really are crocheting your granny squares to big
