Making A Granny Square Balaclava

  • This video is very different than my last balaclava video! I personally love this one better :) *Just remember that my "tutorial" videos are a little different than the normal ones you might watch. I do show you the steps, but I'm also making this for the first time, sooo it's more of a watch me make mistakes so you don't have to! lol*
    CHAPTERS:
    Intro: 0:00
    Making a Granny Square: 3:48
    Hiding yarn tails on the Granny Square: 15:23
    Attaching the Squares: 18:09
    Making a boarder / trim: 26:41
    Reveal: 28:05
    Final Thoughts: 28:31
    First off if you want to know the measurement of the squares/ balaclava there are diagrams through out the video.
    THE GRANNY SQUARE MEASUREMENTS:
    8 x 8 inches OR 21cm x 21cm
    I made 7 of them
    Yarn was Medium 4 weight and 100% Acrylic
    WHAT I USED:
    5mm / US H 8 Crochet hook.
    I unfortunately do not know the name of the yarn colours or how much I used, because I was using all my left over yarn from other projects and they no longer had their labels on them.
    But I do know that all the yarn was a Medium 4 weight and 100% Acrylic.
    And 90% of the yarn I used was the Impeccable brand.
    Also just an fyi (don’t think i really need to put this out there) but I wouldn’t recommend wearing one while driving. Or at least pull the hood part back, that way your peripheral vision isn’t blocked.

    The lesson I’ve learned after doing many tutorials: always watch the full video before you try to make something. My first project, a patchwork cardigan, i did not watch the video before sowing the squares together (once I make a square I immediately sow it together) so i ended up doing it wrong and because I had only bought so much yarn, I wasn’t able to fix it. I just mentioned this because she realized she had an extra square, and if you are watching how things go you can mess up. Lesson: watch the full video before you start.

    Help pleeease :) the instructions were amazing in this video but I got lost at the point of attaching the neck part to the hood :(. My hood is fully connected, so from here I need to connect the neck to the hood but offsetting by 5cm on each side as shown in 22:42? I got confused with which squares need to be stitched using the "miss the 6th" method. Sorry hoping someone can help as I really want to finish this project!

      Did we ever get clarification on this? I am confused at the same point as well. I think she’s talking about connecting the back neck and hood squares, but I’ll definitely have to wing it and hope it comes out well. 💁🏻‍♀️

    • @desireemonge6120
      @desireemonge6120 Рік тому

      I figured this out if anyone needs help. When you're connecting the hood to the neck(in the back after offsetting), you will use the slip stitch 5 times as normal and then skip a stitch in the hood, but go into the next stitch on the neck. After I really sat down and thought about it, it made sense. Sew(pun intended), when you sew the back area this way, it will be offset and then you'll sew the two partials of the middle hood section to the one square in the front(neck square). You'll need to make sure to loosely fold the balaclava as it will be assembled because I made the mistake of offsetting too much and had to frog. If anyone has questions, let me know! This is such a fun and cute project!

    Hi, I am so confused! So I have laid out all my granny squares like in 22:42 - when attaching the bottom row of granny squares to the row above, is that when I do the skipping the sixth stitch and if so would it still like this diagram once the bottom row is attached? or does the stitch skipping happen at a different point of putting it altogether (and if so when)? not sure if this comment makes sense just really confused but love the pattern and want to finish!!

    • @autumn247
      @autumn247 Рік тому +4

      i think you could do it with any squares you want as long as they are all the same size and match the dimensions of the ones in the video( 8x8 inches) which you could accomplish by adding extra rounds to whichever square you are creating if necessary.
      Otherwise, if the squares you make are smaller, the balaclava itself will be smaller and might not fit the same as the creators. Hopefully that makes sense lol
