I love how you break down the instructions and you don’t assume that people know any of the terms. Your camera angle is perfect because the shot is clear and nice and close. The other thing you do great is that you stopped and, with the needle showed where to put the hook. You understand that for beginners all of the holes look the same. To further reach all of your learners you have notes typed on the video. It’s clear how much effort you put into your tutorials. Just an observation from a teacher…and a student of crochet. Thank you!
THIS IS THE FIRST VIDEO IVE FOUND THAT ● IS CLOSE UP ENOUGH and ● GOES SLOWLY ENOUGH to re-learn from years ago and teach my granddaughters! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!
I 100% agree!!! This is, BY FAR, one of the EASIEST patterns I have ever found to follow! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR COMPREHENSIVE, AND YET SIMPLIFIED, STYLE OF DEMONSTRATING CROCHET PATTERNS! YOU HAVE A GIFT, THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!!!!! ❤
I will MOST DEFINITELY be "blocking" my squares (I had never heard of this before, I learned so much from your video, and I am by no means a newbie to crocheting- I was taught by my grandmother as a young girl, which I am nowhere near any longer, LMAO!)
One very small granny square was the beginning of what started to be a college dorm bed when my daughter was in school. When it was meant to to be finished for her graduation, I kept on with it and it turned into a wedding gift for when she got married, after school. At that time it had become a king size blanket. I made a second one, same size for one of my sons .. Very satisfying. While working on them, the blankets went with me to many Dr appointments for myself....crochet pouch and all 👍👍👍
I’m typing this comment after completing my FIRST ever granny square. And I just want to say THANK YOU. You made it so easy to follow along. I am grateful!!
You are the first creator that has made it possible for me to FINALLY learn how I can do, not only a granny square but also switch colors. I love how in depth you go and that you follow through the entire project. Absolutely LOVE that you put the instructions on the top of video too while doing that particular stitch. You’re an amazing teacher, thank you so so much 🥹!
I want to learn to crochet and I came to UA-cam to start watching some tutorials. I saw your comment and this is amazing! I can’t wait to finish this video now!! Not a lot of creators follow through like that.
My husband is out of the country and my daughter went off to college and I'm suddenly finding needlework in the evening is JUST THE THING. Thank you for this fun and crystal clear tutorial, you helped my granny squares look much less wonky than the ones I tried to make last night. I'll be back for more! Thank you.
This is such a clear video - love that you wrote the instructions on the top as you crocheted the block- and did it through the entire block - you were super patient and repetitive - loved that. I’m a crochet newbie and I totally feel like I can do this now. I think making a bag is a great idea - can’t wait to see it. Thanks so much for this tutorial! .
At last! After several failed attempts, I've finally found a granny square video with instructions that I was able to make sense of and follow. I'm jubilantly about to finish my first ever proper Granny square! Thank you so much for your wonderful, clear guidance! :D
I've been self teaching myself to crochet for awhile and this is the best video I've come across. Finally someone goes at the pace for beginners and really explains the reasoning behind why you do certain stitches, etc. Thank you so much!
This is the BEST tutorial for beginner crocheters. I tried watching several other videos and was so frustrated with something from everyone. Your tutorial was spot on. Right speed, easy directions, and easily explained. I've only been crocheting for a week and just made the most beautiful granny square. I'll be watching your other videos.
Once thing you've done that no other person has done in their tutorials that I've seen is show how the part you're working on fits into the final product. It's actually so helpful. All these terms mean nothing to a beginner if the person doesn't explain how they work! At least to me. Thanks!
I came into this video with very little crochet knowledge, only how to make a basic chain, and have created my very first granny square!! I'm thrilled. You broke down each step into its simplest form -- incredible. This is the fourth video I've clicked on trying to learn & yours was the only one I've been able to comprehend. So straightforward & thorough. Thanks for all the time you put into making this video. I'm making a granny square balaclava :)
Hey Erica .. thanks for the fantastic tutorial.. it’s been about 47 years since I made granny squares. I didn’t learn the terminology back then but with your guidance I think I can re-learn how to crochet. Now I need some fun yarn.
I just want to say thank you for the clear and concise instructions… I am an avid knitter but I have a fear and aversion to crocheting because of the verbal abuse my grandmother gave me every time I try to crochet something as a child... My hands literally were shaking making the first 4 corners.. .. thank you for showing how to do a double crochet as not everyone knows how to do those… Appreciate your video ..again thank you so much .. sincerely..
literally the only person on youtube that can actually explain how to crochet without making it overly complicated or simplified to the point it turns out bad
i learned how to crochet from different youtube videos but i have never seen a video like this one. its extremely begginer friendly. i even cry a little bit because it feels like someone teachs me how to crochet in person. thats the best tutorial, thank you so much
OMG! I forgot how to do granny squares for awhile after a crocheting break for a year. Crochet over the thread at the end, your a genius! How has no one else ever mentioned this trick to me before ive never been so glad I picked a video over others before for a refresher. thank you!
I've been wanting to learn how to crochet for YEARS but never had a video or person be able to explain it to me & have me understand. And then I find this GEM of a video today. Thank you endlessly for your explanations, patience, and perfect angling of this video. I think I can do this🥹🥹
i got a kit from target to finally learn how to crochet a granny square. with your clear guidance, i DID IT! i finished my first square yesterday and have already made another this morning. thank you for showing how to change colors and all the tips for beginners. this video is amazing!

I've been crocheting for a year but every single creator explained grannies like this ancient science, finally someone who taught me how to do them! I'm going to make so so so many projects with this newfound knowledge. I love you for this! tysm
This is an excellant tutorial. I must do this. My mom tried to teach me to crochet but I just couldn't learn it., now, many decades later I may learn it. Thank you Erica. I saved this video.
GUYS THIS IS TAKING ME FOREVER BUT I’M SLOWLY DOING IT 🎉🎉 edit: this is my first crochet project with no knowledge on how to do anything (not even tie the slip knot) and I managed to do it after some trial and error! i also made some of your other sewing crafts and they turned out great! thankyou for teaching me so much and so well!
You are INCREDIBLE!! I saw this video on my recommended, watched the first 5 minutes, and immediately headed to Micheal's and bought 30 dollars worth of crochet stuff, and then watched the rest while making my first square! SUPER EASY TO FOLLOW! I've never crocheted anything before! AHHH I LOVE THIS VIDEO TYSM FOR IT!!!!
Man i have had the hardest time with finding the right video to learn a granny square. I was having the hardest time learning these! I blame it all the vids I was trying to learn from. FINALLY I found u and all is right with the world again! You're easy to follow along with because u assume everyone is a beginner which is EXACTLY what I needed! Thank u so so much, my granny square is beautiful
Finally found a video that is practical, uses colors clear enough to see and the pacing is just right for a beginner. Thank you for repeating and not fast forwarding through the rows and talking through all the nuances of each row.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. Learning to crochet was becoming a huge challenge for me. This video helped me to figure things out! Thank you!
I’ve tried crocheting for years and never been able to make a granny square your video is the only one that I think I could use to easily make one .I inherited lots of beautiful bright colored wool and now I know what I’m going to use it for 😊thankyou so much
I have been crocheting for years but never attempted a granny square because I thought they were 'boring' (how wrong I was!). I love this video, I can see how this video is amazing for a beginner and I still learnt things (besides the pattern) which I'm so happy about. Granny squares are going to be my new obsession - thank you!!
I think this is easy enough for me too. I've learned the single and double stitches, so far. My biggest regret was not spending more time with my grandmother when I was younger. She lived in another state, and we would only be able to visit for a few days and a lot of family was always around, so it was crazy. She did beautiful work. She was very crafty,, which I believe I've inherited, but I've been afraid to start crocheting. Mainly cause every craft starts out little, then before I know it, I have a room full of yarn. But I'm trying to learn. So far, I've managed to make hanging dishtowels. Getting better.
I am having some health issues, and after 30 years of resting my crochet hook, I decided to renew the old hobby by learning the new skill of granny squares. This video was so easy to follow along with that within an hour I had made my first completed granny square. I was so excited and am now looking forward to taking it easy instead of being upset and frustrated. Thank you 🩷
The other day I was crocheting in a single strand, now I'm making beautiful granny squares. Thank you so much this was amazing and so clear! Better than any book I've read so far!!
Omg this is the first tutorial in months that I’ve found that I’ve been able to actually follow along and make my very fist ever granny square! I’ve been teaching myself to crochet for a couple months now since I don’t have anyone around me that knows how to, so thank you so so much for this godsend of a tutorial!!
I’m an experienced crocheter and know how to make granny squares already, but I just had to click on this suggested video because your squares are just so cute! Love all of the colors you used and your video just looks so great all around 😊
Hi! I learned knitting first, as a kid, and since my mid 20's I've been trying to wrap my head around crocheting. Over the years, I'd feel inspired to try to learn it, watch a bunch of UA-cam videos about it, get frustrated, and eventually forget about it for a few years until the mood would strike again, only for me to get confused and stop, and the pattern would repeat. This is the first video in 17 years to be able to teach me how to do it. I ACTUALLY MADE A GRANNY SQUARE. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, clear, friendly instructions and video! You are a wonderful teacher!
This is a fantastic tutorial. I am an absolute beginner, and was getting frustrated trying to "master" double crochets in a longer row. Making a granny square, with your super detailed and easy-to-understand directions helps to really power through how awkward it can be for newbies. Thank you so much!
this was the video that made me want to continue learning crochet. i was about ready to give up, but like everyone else says, you made the tutorial so clear and easy to follow. i can’t thank you enough ❤️
I can’t tell you how hopeless I felt trying to learn how to crochet a granny square 😭😭 Every tutorial for beginners either made it more complicated, went way too fast (assuming we knew what to do), or had horrible instructions. You made me understand right away and when I was confused, it’s like you knew and answered my question. I will keep practicing with this video!! I’M SO HAPPY that I finally understand and know I’m capable 🥳🥳🥳 THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤
As an experienced knitter I have struggled with learning crochet. Your tutorial was fabulous! I’m looking at my granny square as I type this! It’s not perfect, but it’s actually not too bad either! Thanks for the great instructions! ♥️🧶
Perfectly explained and the close up images really clarify positioning of stitches and hook placement. Thank you, thank you Erica. I've seen other videos before and have been able to follow but not without backing up more than a few times. Fantastic!!
This is the video that helped me understand knots I just… could not understand while reading about them. You do a GREAT job showing exactly how your hook moves and where it goes without blocking it with your hand or angle of the camera. Thank you so much! I’m learning for the first time and I appreciate you! ❤
Thank you so much!!! I have been crocheting for at least 2 Years and I've never been able to make a granny square until now!!!! Thanks for this awesome video!!!! 😂
This video is AMAZING FOR BEGINNERS! I literally was struggling to work a chain yesterday and now I’ve completed my first gorgeous granny square. It helped so much that you went through the same instructions multiple times on each round to reinforce the pattern. 10/10, THANK YOU BUNCHES!!!
I just stopped back by to say that I literally had zero idea how to crochet before I found this video. I had a few skeins of yarn and some hooks that I won at a Christmas bingo party and I had always wanted to learn to crochet. I started googling and came across your page. BEST THING EVER! Thank you SO much for doing these videos! You make it so easy to learn, breaking down everything step by step! I’ve made a few dozen of these and they are SO fun to make! I will be back for more of your videos frequently! Keep up the good work, and again, THANK YOU!!!! ❤
I’ve spent all day watching this video step by step over and over as I do it myself and I’m proud to say I think I might actually know what I’m doing! Thank you!!!!
Thank You Erica, 65 years old and I did not know how to make a Granny Square, but, I did it with your wonderful tutorial. I am amazed, you are a very talented teacher! Thank you! Now let’s hope I remember😉🥳💐
I just started learning how to crochet yesterday and I’m so glad I found your video today! Thank you for your patience in this video by showing the steps slowly and repeating them for every colour. It makes your tutorial easy to follow for a beginner like me and also let me memorise the different stitches well! 💕 I managed to do my very first granny square and it turned out not so bad! ☺️🥳 Thanks again!!
Oh GOD!!!! Finally someone out there who understood how difficult it is for begginers to understand excatlty "which step creates which design" . You taught why we are doing the particular round and it made the whole process so easy . I cant thank you enough. Thanks . Love from INDIA!
I only started crocheting yesterday and my mom was so impressed when i made one of these squares thank you so much for this amazing tutorial it was reeeeally helpful 💞
Brilliant. I learnt to crochet 40yrs ago and my granddaughter (far away) aged 13 wanted to learn and asked me to check out some tutorials for her to follow. Yours was the first I clicked on. You are an excellent teacher and very clear in what your describing - problem is you give away too many tips, how am I supposed to look clever to my granddaughter when I talk to her 😅 Seriously well done 💜
Excellent video. I have been crocheting for 50 years, but the tips you give for things like changing colors/rows and always starting new rows in the corner are genius. I always disliked the method I used to change colors but thanks to you, I love my (or should I say your) new way of doing it. I would highly recommend this video for a beginner or ANYONE who has a love of crochet. You have a very soothing voice and give a beginner a feeling that they can do it. Thank you so much. I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
I love this tutorial, thank you so much!! I’ve tried so many others and kept getting confused but this pattern is so easy. I love that it keeps repeating itself so it’s really easy for a beginner. I started off learning how to crochet a beginner flower so this was perfect for a second task - unfortunately I had to go through so many other videos before I found this. Thanks for being so clear and repetitive!! Oh and I LOVE that you taught us using the needle to thread in the loose yarns first and then moved on to teach us how to hide it in when you thought we would be able to handle it - SO GOOD. I love love love how thoughtful that was! I’m left handed but this video was so clear I had no issue at all.
Best video. I know how to crochet, self taught. My Nana always made granny square afghans and passed before she was able to teach me how to crochet. Thank you so much! Everyone is getting granny squares for Christmas this year!
I want to thank you, because After the second section in, I knew what to do. I paused the video and completed it in 3 minutes. This is my first time ever making a Granny square, and this is the best tutorial I found! ❤
I am so HAPPY I found you! You are exactly the type of content I was looking for to help me get started on my crochet journey! I love how you break down each step including finishing off and not make us look for another video on other steps its all here in one video! I also love that after I make my squares I can make the bag with them and have a finished project not just a bunch of squares lying around lol! Thank you again!
I have been watching your tutorials mainly for quilting...But your tutorial for the granny square was top notch and easy to follow that I'm going to try it one more time. Thank you for your tutorials! Pam
I started a grannie square project that I was going to make into my first ever hand made sweater. I have made blankets before, and scarves. Your grannie squares are so much easier, I have decided to scrap my project, and start new using your pattern. Thank you so much, your video was so easy to follow.
I really enjoy all of your tutorials. You explain the craft to where I can understand! I am not good at crocheting but I’m still trying! Thanks! God bless!
You have no idea how grateful I am I came across this. I was feeling so frustrated that I couldn't nail the granny square and I did it! I'm almost finished enough granny squares to make my first Christmas stocking. TY!!!
I love the bloopers at the end! Your video is by far the easiest to understand! My grandma told me to learn the granny square crochet and every time I tried I failed. I just completed my very first granny square thanks to you!! Thank you!!
I am echoing so many others here, but I just wanted to let you know how helpful this video was for me! Even though I struggle with spatial learning, your step by step instructions are making this downright easy. You are an amazing teacher-thank you! ❤
Thank you I love how you go slow for my 71 year old brain. I have tried so hard to learn with my grandma when I was a kid. How I know how to make Aranyaka square . I’m also left handed
Finally, bless you woman!! I’ve only watched about 50 of these and everyone else over confuses it!! This is the best tutorial, I can now do a granny square! Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you for this video! I've been wasting so much time weaving in ends separately and weaving WAY more than I needed to, this method for granny squares is gonna save me so much time!
I cannot thank you enough for helping me. I have looked at SEVERAL videos of a granny crochet and for some reason I'd always flub up but yours was the first one I successfully made one through AND I learned how to stitch in colors! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I never thought I'd be able to create a granny square because instructions skipped ahead and assumed I knew what each code was. Best video ever and after 6 years, I finally made one! Will be searching your other tutorials but thank you so much
Your instructions were impeccable! You spoke clearly and the visuals are clear. I watched the video once to ensure I understood the process, then watched it a second time as I made my first ever granny square. I didn’t need the instructions for the 2nd and subsequent squares. Wonderful! Thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks, I'm so glad it was helpful!
Totally agree with Ninette. Awesome teacher
@@erica_arndt would it be possible to chain one instead of 2 on a corner to provide a more complete and less holey looking product?

Sometimes your video goes blurry 🙄
Not helpful!
This is legitimately the best ever beginner tutorial for a granny square. I thank you young kind lady for taking your time to do this!
I agree! Never understood any other ones
Totally agree!
Agree! Happy crocheting
This is the video that taught me crochet. The first video I can actually follow along!

I’ve tried crocheting for years and never been able to make a granny square your video is the only one that I think I could use to easily make one .I inherited lots of beautiful bright colored wool and now I know what I’m going to use it for 😊thankyou so much
Me sitting here with literally nothing to crochet with and watching the whole video through 😂
same 😂💕
You have to start somewhere ! 👍
Me too!!
Same😂
I have been crocheting for years but never attempted a granny square because I thought they were 'boring' (how wrong I was!).
This is the pattern my granny taught me how to make when i was around 9. Soooo long ago!!❤ Miss learning from her.
Excellent, I’m a beginner at the grand age of 62, love this and you’re a brilliant teacher. Thank you. 🥰
Wow thank you so much! I'm so glad the video was helpful :)
Wow! This is the best tutorial I've seen on how to make granny squares! Thanks so much for a great tutorial...you are a great teacher!
This is a fantastic tutorial. I am an absolute beginner, and was getting frustrated trying to "master" double crochets in a longer row. Making a granny square, with your super detailed and easy-to-understand directions helps to really power through how awkward it can be for newbies. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
this was the video that made me want to continue learning crochet. i was about ready to give up, but like everyone else says, you made the tutorial so clear and easy to follow. i can’t thank you enough ❤️
I’M SO HAPPY that I finally understand and know I’m capable 🥳🥳🥳 THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤
Thanks so much, I'm so glad the video was helpful! :)
Fantastic!!
Maravilhoso trabalho amei!! Parabéns 🎉 Beijinhos.❤️❤️❤️👏🌷🍀
Can you show us how to join them pls?
This is the video that helped me understand knots I just… could not understand while reading about them. You do a GREAT job showing exactly how your hook moves and where it goes without blocking it with your hand or angle of the camera. Thank you so much! I’m learning for the first time and I appreciate you! ❤
Hands down my favourite granny square tutorial! I'm a beginner and I had the time of my life learning from you! Thank you 😊 🇿🇦
Super. I understood very clearly. U r a very good teacher.😊
Thank you so much!!! I have been crocheting for at least 2 Years and I've never been able to make a granny square until now!!!! Thanks for this awesome video!!!! 😂
You are so welcome!
Just made my first square and I'm thrilled .I'm making my granddaughters winter scarves. Perfect tutorial. Thankyou
See no matter how many times I watch this video hers comes out looking beautiful mine comes out looking like a cluster of knots.
Thanks so much, I'm glad it was helpful! :)
This was the most clear and most beautiful tutorial on how to make a granny square and I enjoyed doing it as a beginner
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and it was helpful!! :)
Hello, dear friend, I also have motif training on my channel. Thank you for being with me on my channel
Best video. I know how to crochet, self taught. My Nana always made granny square afghans and passed before she was able to teach me how to crochet. Thank you so much! Everyone is getting granny squares for Christmas this year!
Just completed my first ever granny square using this video as a guide! Thank you!
My favorite granny square tutorial. I'm a scatter-brained, off-again on-again crocheter so I always come back to this one for a refresher
I haven't made granny squares in a while thanks for the refresher. I love your colors. Spring colors.
I’ve tried several different granny squares and ways to change colors. I like this best so far!! I’ve crocheted for 54 years. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Yes! After watching countless other granny square tutorials I think you explained it the best! So excited to add this to my patterns! Thank you!❤️💫
Glad it was helpful!
This is the BEST tutorial ever!!! After countless failed attempts to make a granny square, I finally did it with your help! 💛
Thanks! God bless!
I'm a crocheter and have always been confused by granny squares, but finally (!!!) with your video I understand!
Thank you dear -)
time stamps for my project, you can ignore :)
round one: 3:19
round two: 12:40
round three: 20:28
round four: 28:28
This is the first granny square video I’ve actually understand and I’ve just completed my first granny square 😭
So many bright, fun colors! How fun. :)
You have no idea how grateful I am I came across this. I was feeling so frustrated that I couldn't nail the granny square and I did it! I'm almost finished enough granny squares to make my first Christmas stocking. TY!!!
I’ve been crocheting longer than I care to mention but granny squares are my favorite! You did a wonderful job giving instructions.
Thank you so much!
Thank you! Managed to make a granny suave for the first time because of the way you presented it. 😊
I really enjoyed this tutorial, thank you! I haven’t done crochet in about 30 years. I need to find my hooks and try again.
I love the bloopers at the end! Your video is by far the easiest to understand! My grandma told me to learn the granny square crochet and every time I tried I failed. I just completed my very first granny square thanks to you!! Thank you!!
I love this. My mom was into doing Granny Squares. Make me want to pick this up. Thanks for doing this ❤️
Bravissima
I am echoing so many others here, but I just wanted to let you know how helpful this video was for me! Even though I struggle with spatial learning, your step by step instructions are making this downright easy. You are an amazing teacher-thank you! ❤
Thank you I love how you go slow for my 71 year old brain. I have tried so hard to learn with my grandma when I was a kid. How I know how to make Aranyaka square . I’m also left handed
Finally, bless you woman!! I’ve only watched about 50 of these and everyone else over confuses it!! This is the best tutorial, I can now do a granny square! Thank you 🙏🏼
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve got my squares made, I can hardly wait for the bag! Love your video and the way you teach!
Thank you for this video! I've been wasting so much time weaving in ends separately and weaving WAY more than I needed to, this method for granny squares is gonna save me so much time!
confused in 20 different languages right now 😂 I’m going to try this once I loosen my tension, this is a great tutorial btw❤
I cannot thank you enough for helping me. I have looked at SEVERAL videos of a granny crochet and for some reason I'd always flub up but yours was the first one I successfully made one through AND I learned how to stitch in colors! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Loved your video!! Lots of patience showing us how to work the square! Definitely going to make some!! Thank you for your excellent tutorial!! 🤗
I never thought I'd be able to create a granny square because instructions skipped ahead and assumed I knew what each code was. Best video ever and after 6 years, I finally made one! Will be searching your other tutorials but thank you so much
Glad I could help!
Loved the tutorial. Makes me want to crochet again. Can't wait to see the bag!
This is one of the best tutorials I've ever seen!
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial!! It was so helpful!! I just made a sunflower granny square!!😊🌻💕
Your instructions were impeccable! You spoke clearly and the visuals are clear. I watched the video once to ensure I understood the process, then watched it a second time as I made my first ever granny square. I didn’t need the instructions for the 2nd and subsequent squares. Wonderful! Thank you!
