Austrian is one of those airlines that I never imagined myself flying - not because I didn't want to, but simply because their limited network made it difficult to find a way to make it fit into my schedule. But that all came to a screeching halt in August of 2018 when I had the opportunity to take this flight (OS018) from Vienna (VIE) to Los Angeles (LAX). As you can see, it was an amazing experience!
I had seat 7K for this 12 hour flight, and the aircraft registration was OE-LPB.

Wow i think that Austrian Airlines make a really good job too! The dinner looks soo good! I like our Austrian Food sooo much and the Egg at the Lounge looks so good!

Thanks, yeah, I love the sound of the GE90 on takeoff! And as much as I hate to admit it, despite spending over 8 hours editing this video, I missed the AS neo! 😵😅

Great video! I recently had the opportunity to fly on the Austrian business class as well. Brilliant experience, and so much better than Lufthansa, which is quite a surprise given that Austrian is owned by them!

I flew OE-LPB already back in 2004 Vienna - Kuala Lumpur - Sydney, when it still wore the Lauda Air livery (although already part of Austrian Airlines).

I was on the return flight the week before last and Jeff Goldblum was sitting in business on his way to the Venice Film Festival. I always enjoy flying Austrian as it's just an all around pleasant experience - from the service to the Do & Co catering, which even in economy is pretty fricken good. If you fly from the US to Eastern Europe you're more likely to come across Austrian in searches - and, of course, if you live in Vienna like I do.
Very interesting! I’ve never seen anyone famous (other than Lyle Lovett at SFO once), and I’d imagine this VIE-LAX flight has celebrities on it all the time. And it’s totally understandable too considering how good of an airline Austrian is.
I'm mystified by even one not-likes. Like all of your excellent trip reports, this one was entertaining, informative, and interesting. Sheesh. You give your followers free entertainment and helpful reviews. What's NOT to like??? ;-) Thank you so much.

Great video Scott, I loved the moving graphics of the arriving aircraft, great feature doing that.
I have only had the pleasure of flying OS from VIE-LHR in business, but it was still very fun, a great of United Miles.
All of the food looked great and very nice, lol loved the "Music sucks 50 % of UA-cam part lol"
Man I gotta fly LHR-LAX again this month in ECONOMY :( on AA, oh well at least I get the lounges and Main Cabin Extra lol

Hopefully I’ll learn enough to add some more sizzle to my videos as time goes on! Anyway, you seem to be doing LHR-LAX a lot! Economy or not, I’m sure that you’re racking up the miles (and status) for future biz class trips. 😎👍🏻

Lucky ya get the 777 on the VIE-LAX run. We only get the 767 on the run into ORD.
Yeah I think LAX is the only North American destination that gets the 777 right now. IAD got it not long ago, but I think it went back to the 767. 🤔
Iad got it last year but since they opened up ord then they dont need that much capacity as all connecting passengers can choose either iad or ord..
ORD was serviced by a 777 earlier this summer for a week or two

Yeah, that was a great shot of the new stadium. The one in Las Vegas for the Raiders is being constructed right now as well, both are going to be state of the art.
I was actually really surprised to see that (didn’t think they were that far along), and I’m surprised I didn’t belt out a “whoa!!” as I was recording. 😂
That was a great shot as you were on the 25L approach. Austrian is sure a great carrier, so glad they are here at LAX. Would always see them at JFK. Great video.
I'm sold on the sky blue engine nacelles. Disappointed in the lack of a greasy pork cutlet and spaetzli. Nothing wrong with remote gate; even the Pope parks there.

Hey Another video from Scott! Nice black background at the intro. You are getting better and better my buddy. I never get bored @lunges, I head for the whiskey :-) The soup looked like the best soup I've ever seen on an aircraft.
Haha, I’ll try the whiskey thing next time and see how it goes. 🤪😆 And yeah, the soup was good! The entire meal was excellent actually - Austrian business class is legit!

Thanks! Austrian is part of Star Alliance, so it’s fairly easy to book business class with miles.

You could of recorded the Triple 7 safety video for Austrian.
I was looking at the warm nuts, were they peanuts? Or just mixed nuts without peanuts? Have flown Austrian many times business class but not for years and they didn't serve peanuts then, but it looks like there are some in that little bowl of nuts. Thanks.

Hi, I am booked on the same flight an the same seat - so one of 2 non throne-seats compared to the wider ones. Was it an issue for you to have the galley and toilets behind you all the time? Further more my flight leaves vienna at 10AM and arrives at around 1PM - was this the same with you? It looks like you had a night passage in between? Great video!
Hi Alfred - to be honest, it was kind of loud in that seat with the galley right behind me. The flight attendants were working (loudly) in there for a majority of the flight and it was a little distracting. Not too bad though. And yes! I forgot the time exactly, but we left Vienna late morning and arrived at LAX early afternoon. Sounds like they haven’t changed the schedule at all. Have a great flight!

Vienna is the city of the highest Level of "Living Quality" in the world. the city is of an unbelievable charm and beauty.....
When it Comes to Austrian Airlines they are a 100& daughter of LH. So LH rules.
Their intra european Service on OS has been downgraded in eco a lot. Only C/cl counts.
On longhauls they are fantastic. well, proof on file...
OS had a first class cabin which is history..so only c remains. A very good one.
By the way a friend of mine took a flight on AA from Lax to HNL daytime flight. ALL HE GOT had been two mini hamburgers some kind of coldslaw and fruit. Can you imagine that in so called First class?????
No champagne no sparkling wine ( and there are so fantastic sparklings wines from California) only cheap Prosecco.
On a 5:15 hour flight… I simply cant take tis anymore. What is going on in the U.S.
Yeah Claus, it was a really good experience! I’d actually love to try LH business class just to be able to compare it to OS - as you said, LH is the parent company for a lot of European airlines so it would be a real shame if the service the service started blending together between all of them. We need to get more international carriers to SAN! Like, for example, Austrian. 😁

Strange, Scott, that you haven’t seen an Austrian plane. They’re part of the Lufthansa Group. I’ve seen them at LAX, ORD, ZRH, NRT amongst other international airports. I’ve flown their business class and have enjoyed it. Glad you too got to experience it. 👍🏻. Being a member of the Lufthansa Group, I have accrued mileage deposited into my United account ... that’s the only way I deposit mileage to Star Alliance by flying it’s international partners. Otherwise it’s AA for me since I’ve passed the 1M mark with them and working on achieving lifetime Platinum level. 😉
Maybe I just haven’t been looking hard enough, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen an Austrian plane anywhere. 🙈 I may lose my “spotter” credentials for saying something like that, I know, but it’s true. 😄 Anyway, yes, I use UA for all my Star Alliance award redemptions as well, and this was a killer deal for only 70k points.
The food looked good, but was upstaged by the triangular crockery! Looked very cool.

Even economy has triangular dishes and bowls - albeit in plastic.

Awesome video Scott! Austrian has been on my bucket list for a while as well. They seem really good on all the videos and reports I see. The food all looks delicious! That is a comfortable seat as well, practically the same one SWISS has. Did you have to pay extra for the single throne seat?

Thanks Brendan - as a matter of fact the throne seat was complementary! I did have to call and reserve it though - there was no way to do it online. And yes, it was UA LAX-SAN immediately after. The full trip report for that flight is on my blog if you’re curious!
Did you get one of those single seats in the last row? I just booked a flight from VIE to ORD in business, but I just had a hard time deciding which seat to choose! I ended up picking the last row, but I'm still not sure it's a good choice. If you could advise, that would be great!
Yeah, it was a single seat in the very last row. Privacy was slightly better than most other seats but the noise (and light) from the galley might be an issue for some.

SANspotter 5:33 Austrian Airlines' safety video needs to be updated it came out in 2005-06 whilst Korean air's safety video came out in 2003.

How did you get from LAX back to SAN?
I recently flew Austrian (the very same plane actually) from NRT. I must say I this was my least favourite long haul economy product so far. The seat design was extraordinarily cheap und uncomfortable and the IFE wasn't exactly overwhelmingly good either. This is the closest I've ever come to flying a low budget carrier on a 11 hour flight, except it wasn't low budget.
Sigmund Leid if you want more comfort, you must pay more and fly Business Class or Premium Economy Class! If you pay less you receive less! It is that simple.

I liked the music!! I have flown before on Austrian Airlines from VIE to ORD and it was amazing. The lounge at the airport in Vienna is nice too. Have you tried LOT Airlines?

It wasn’t so bad actually - noise from the galley wasn’t an issue other than right after the meal service (when they were busy cleaning up).
I can't wait to try their service after watching your video. I'm flying them from IAD to VIE on Fri in business! and hopefully upgraded coming home next week.
The remote gates at LAX are trash
This was my first time using the remote gates and I was expecting worse actually. But it’s still very inconvenient! On the other hand, the bus ride to the TBIT is fun with all the close up views from the taxiways.
