Turns out you can spray them below 22 psi when the air is warmer and more humid 🙊🙈 great video Clayton! I was impressed with them too...best experience I've had with water-based paint. But I think I'll still stick with the lacquer as they're still superior in my experience. Though, directly comparing lacquer and acrylic might not be fair as they have different aims.

Hey Evan. Thanks for joining in. I agree with you re the lacquer paints, but like I mentioned the smell of the lacquer thinner and the impact on health is always in the back of my mind…

I am actually trying to find a reason to stick with the ungodly amount of lacquers I have bought, but so far, they behave so admirable, it's getting hard. ;)
I have the humidity (~90%) and can even use them at 11 psi reliably, doing the finest lines.
What baffles me the most is the complete lack of tip-dry. I don't know what magic they used...

Here in the US, we have Tamiya, and Vallejo paints. Tamyia is great to thin way down with IPA and Vallejo just water. You don't want to mix the two.
oil based paints are still great for pin washes, and filters over bases. since I am not really using an air brush with those, I don't have to worry about fumes. I also like water based clean up.

    • @workbenchhobbies4316
      @workbenchhobbies4316  10 місяців тому +3

Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing. I sometimes thin my Tamiya paints with ipa. That would usually be for specific things like post shading. The lacquer thinners tend to give you a more even finish for block colour because it retards the drying time and gives the paint time to settle. IPA tends to evaporate quickly.
Appreciate you sharing your experiences 🙏💪☝️

    Great review.
I gave up using the original versions for airbrushing when they came out, you almost needed change technique for differnt colours. I have, over time, with no other source of some colours available, used them to great effect however. With pressure a bit higher and watching the thinning, I have grown to like the paints a lot and they brush great if you not to adventurous.
Keen to try these alongside my laquers. Thanks for a great bit of work.

Great and thorough review! I can only underline everything you said.
For me, it's the holy grail of model paints and I have already bought all sets I could get my hands on.
Only thing I would add is the fact that the dropper bottles make no mess whatsoever and work beautifully.
I tested the metallic set as well and they are nice but don't have this fine pigment of Alclad.
Other than that I will probably use them as my main paints and hope Ammo releases many more and also as individual bottles.
One more thing: they are extremely durable when applied over primer, I was nearly unable to scratch them with a fingernail after 30 minutes and even with pincers, it took much more force than I would have expected.
    Cheers

Thanks for the review! Was hoping that Ammo would do something better with acrylic paints because I've never managed to get them to work well. Making it worse, I've got multiple Ammo sell books that tell you how to use their paint, each with different instructions on pressures and mixes. I've followed that advice to the letter and still haven't had success. 15% paint to thinner in one book, which didn't work with any pressure, and was like squirting water at my models.
Like you, I really wanted acrylics to work for health reasons, but hopefully the Atom will work better. Trouble is, they only come in themed packs at £40 each, so not exactly easy to test them 😞

I still spray a lacquer based Primer as having a good solid base coat that sticks to the model is important to me - I generally don't wash parts. I will say, I stick to Acrylic paints so that i don't have to breath in the vapor of lacquer more than I have to. When I was a kid we always used Enamel Testors paints, and I still use it sometimes because the Testors Enamel metallics still look better, cover better and have the smallest partical density of any of the other metallics I've seen. But overall, I use Acrylic to save my lungs and my health.

I even employ the same blending techniques like you with them. The issue I have is with their MM primers. I haven’t googled it yet, but do they make primers too? Appreciate the insight on these paints. I too have started to gravitate towards lacquers specifically for the sprayability especially for those finer details. Hearing that these paints act like lacquers but are an acrylic is extremely promising. I've heard similar things about AKs 3rd Gen acrylics but I've yet to try those either. One question I have as it is a serious issue when spraying freehand camos and shading, did you experience any tip drying during your trial? When I use ammo's standard acrylics I tend to get buildup on the end of the needle.

Peculiar… this makes me want to try lacquer. I’m an acrylic user… I do use enamels in some applications and oil for weathering. I use acrylic from Mission Models(amazing paint… very particular on mix ratio), AK, Tamiya, Vallejo, Mr. Color, Life color.
All work differently, have different characteristics and vary in user ease.
The comment section and video make me want to try lacquer though. I’m not biased on paint type. I mainly care about ease of use, color range, and results.

No surprise that they came out with a new acrylic line. They must have felt they were falling behind with their acrylics line in the last two years against the competition: AK 3rd Gen, Army Painter Paint Fanatic, Vallejo Game Color 2nd Gen, Cuttlefish Colors etc. Main feature of most of the new lines is better coverage and more pigment.

Funny enough I moved away from Taminya as I hated the screw-on lids which I struggled with throughout my teens & early 20s. When I got back into the hobby I consciously made the decision to pick a paint with a dropper bottle. I have used Ammo by Mig & Vallejo Model Air over the past 6 years & can say that I prefer Vallejo Model Air over Ammo by Mig, as I found the lack of consistency in thickness & hue in Ammo paints disappointing, something which I raised with Ammo customer care, that the exact same set of paints (AMMO - 7219 SU-35 Flanker-E Colors ) which I got in 2018 & again 2023 the hues changed so much that I could not match them to colours I already put down, in fact Vallejo Model Air Flanker light blue was a better match to the 2018 pot than 2018 of A.MIG-249 LIGHT BLUE is to the 2023 A.MIG-249 LIGHT BLUE. The paint job in the demo looks great, but I have lost faith in Ammo paints & the fact that they are way more expensive than Vallejo Model Air at the moment I'll give this one a skip.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 AK real color is considered a lacquer? I didn’t realize that. I use AK a fair bit. Maybe check some of my older videos, I did a video on paint types. I tried very hard to use Mission Model paints for a long time but could never get a decent result with them. AK have an acrylic line but the Real Colour range is an acrylic lacquer just like the Tamiya XF paints so they are kind of a hybrid style of paint and not actually a true lacquer. However, thinning them with a lacquer thinner will drag them more to being like a true lacquer.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 I lucked out with MMP. First time I used it, it sprayed phenomenally. Second time was atrocious. I didn’t follow their mix guidelines for either. The second time it gummed up my brush so bad I had to do a complete tear down and deep clean 3 times to finally get it all. Little bits just got stuck everywhere, had to soak it in Tamiya brush cleaner to dissolve it all from the hidden areas. After that I got their additives and thinner. Since then I only use their exact ratio. Some colors are better then others but overall great paint. Just very temperamental. The additives also have a short shelf life so if they go bad, you’ll get a bad result. Not sure if it’s worth it but I like them.

I'm curious, is this paint similar to Tamiya/Aqueous? How it's responding to MLT and X20A makes me think it might be the same stuff. Have had a great time spraying Tamiya w/ MLT compared to true water-based like Vallejo. Bandai has been pushing Aqueous over Lacquer for the past several years but I've been using MLT which puts the toxicity back up to lacquer levels. But a paint:thinner ratio of 1:2 (or as you said 65:35% thinner:paint at 10:20 into the video) ? Well…I certainly never suggested there was anything new about acrylic paints..If you are getting the results you were hoping for using MM paints then that’s awesome 🙌🏼

this video was a waste of time, you didnt speak on the difference in acrylic paints it was a sponsored commercial for one obscure brand

😆 that was easy 😎 All I’m doing is sharing how they worked for me. I’m in not way connected to the brand. You use what you are happy with. At the end of the day, it is just another acrylic paint, but a pretty good one from what I can tell 💪🍺
