    I fed my collie Costco brand dog food for the last 12 years of her life. She passed last year in her sleep at over 16 years of age. She got regular vet visits lots of exercise, and most of all love. I highly doubt that she would have made it much longer even if I would have raised her on expensive food.

    AAFCO doesn’t mean anything. His endorsement of AAFCO makes his opinion worthless. Do some research. AAFCO is run by representatives of the pet food industry. Therefore they set their own standards. That’s like the creator of this video rating it 5 starts because he is part of a review team.

    • @ChicagoMike85
      @ChicagoMike85 7 років тому +24

      Rick Anon that's not true. Every vet tells you to feed your dog science labs dry food. Which is absolutely horrible food.

    • @missmiss9031
      @missmiss9031 7 років тому +19

      I dont care what your vet tells you. Just because they recommend something doesnt mean they get a kick back from it. Ive been a vet for 11 years and I never have received any financial bonus for selling royal canin.
      PS. Science diet is store brand pet food. Hills Prescription diet is veterinary exclusive because it has to be prescribed. So you dont make any sense whatsoever, no vet tells anyone to feed science diet.

    • @johnconner5903
      @johnconner5903 7 років тому +9

      Rick Anon, Hill's Prescription Diet...Science Diet...doesnt matter. They both contain inferior ingredients. Does the science in the prescription diet work to treat the ailment its intended for? Of course....with inferior ingredients.
      And Science Diet is not a "grocery brand". Grocery brands are labeled as such bc you can find them in grocery stores. I've never seen SD sold in a grocery store. Grocery brands are those like Pedigree, Ol Roy, Dog Chow. Grocers are beginning to carry better foods, but I've never seen SD. You have to go to a pet retailer for SD.
      My advice for anyone with a healthy dog is to feed it the best quality food you can afford and that is found through lots of research. If your dog has an ongoing illness needing a special diet the best thing to do is find a holistic vet that can prescribe a diet using high quality ingredients and not just pushing a brand.
      If someone doesn't want to invest the time to research what the best high quality diet would be for their dog then they can use the prescription food their vet recommends. It'll do the job.
      The real issue here isn't whether or not prescription diets work or are legitimate, but whether they are the best option.... And indeed they are NOT.

All the "clinically proven", "100% real meat" etc labels don't really convince me... all they do is make me wonder why would that need to be on there? For me personally origin is the best dog food out there albeit a bit expensive but even if you think that's too much they also make acana which has 50% meats and 50% fruits and vegetables no wheat, corn, rice etc. I changed to acana after my dog's surgery and she's been thriving on it ever since...

Never again will I spend such cash on food i personally don't think a dog should eat period. They can eat what we eat with no problems just don't go crazy on the portions. Home cooked meals way better than them rocks in a fancy bag any day.

    AAFCO is a joke. It's funded by the large conglomerates that produce the largest lines of pet food on the market, such as Purina, Science Diet, Royal Canin, etc. To say that the 'AAFCO' seal of approval is what you want to see on your pet's bag of food is utterly ridiculous.

    • @jordanbrock8199
      @jordanbrock8199 2 роки тому +1

      Amen! And AAFCO is public regulators operating under a private corporation. A lot of aspects of it are illegal… like charging citizens to engage in the rulemaking process, but it has to be challenged in court. Funnest fact of all. The regulators… most of them are beyond stupid. And I’m saying that with respect. Erin Bibb, George Ferguson, Stan Cook. I wouldn’t trust my kids around them. And regulators want to conduct themselves privately because honestly if this was all public, there’d be zero public truth. So they try their best to create illusions. “Look for aafco” and that’s it. HA! No thanks! I am not a stupid consumer !

    Dont ask a vet actually😀 they will refer you to Royal Canin and Hills😃😃😃
    1. Ask your puppy breeder what kind of food the puppy used to eat. And follow at least fir a month. Then you can switch to another brand or for a diet of your choice.
    2. Carefully read all ingredients on the package. Preferably no corn, no weat, no cabbage or beans. They create alot of gas and indigestion.
    3. Canadian brands are good but too heavy and pretty fatty for toy breeds. Dont be afraid to experiment with local manufacturers. They doing great job.
    4. But be prepared to spend some money for testing different options. Before you ll get a best choice for your dog.

    I have posted comments on other videos from this guy before. In part I agree that not every expensive brand is great, but in general, the more money you spend, the less crap is going to be in them. I have had cats for years and carbs are so not needed yet they are in the first 5 ingredients in over 80% of commercially name brands. Talk to your vet and find out what they believe is important. Read labels and find out besides the meat, added vitamins and minerals(usually necessary), what else is added in. THAT is where and what will hurt your pets.

    one of the biggest indicators of weather or not your choice of food is good is to constantly look at the feces when your dog goes to the bathroom. My dog got very sick on regular meat and she had the runs for days. I fed her Purina One and she was too constipated on that formula. I went to Kibbles and Bits and she thrived on it but I knew that it wasn't very good food. I just picked up some Purina Dog Chow and if that's not right for her I'll try Pedigree. If I still can't get it right....well she thrives on Kibbles N Bits LOL.

    Awww, my short lived crush is over. How many nutritional courses did you take while you were in school? Why didn't you touch on feeding your pet according to what they are?
    Dogs and cats are carnivores, they should be getting meat diets, not corn, potatoes, and rice. It doesn't matter if it says AFFCO, if it is not species appropriate, you may as well feed them the bottom of your shoe, they'll get the same amount of nutrition.
    I implore you to read the Orijen White Papers before making any more videos about pet food. It's well known that vets get one course in nutrition while attending school, typically sponsored by Hills. About the worst thing that you can feed your pet is Hills. Dogs and cats need meat, not processed pet food.

      Lannie90210 SD will kill him, not cure him. Your cat is a carnivore. Not a single vet, nor scientist will contest that cats are 100% carnivore. Look at the ingredients in that SD, and tell me how much carnivore do you see in there? Is it 100% meat/bones/organ? Then it's not going to make your cat any better.

    AAFCO, may be a good starting point for what to look for, but also look at the ingredients and the brand's reputation. I would stay away from food that plainly say "meat" or "meat-by products" as you don't know what type of meat it could be (cow, pig, chicken, horse, even cat or dog meat). A brand's reputation also is important because would you risk feeding your pets or animals a brand who has recalls (voluntarily or not) every year?

What they know is the twisted, skewed and slanted nutritional info they've been taught that is backed by the big corporations like Purina, Mars, Hill's, etc. I'm pleased with the comments since it shows people are catching on to this nonsense. This video fits better on a late night infomercial than being labeled true care for the pets you are entrusted to look out for. By products do equal lower quality as they aren’t human grade,they are they meat left over from the human meat industry

      @@kartkeys Not true. Purina, Hill's, Iams and Royal Canine follow guidelines set by WSAVA Global Guidelines. They are science based foods, tested, and nutritionally complete. Of course the $$$ brands want you to believe the opposite. Look for certified veterinarian nutritionists for info, they take extra courses in their vet training. NOT "pet nutritionists" who are trained by boutique brands/pet stores. lol Human grade means nothing. Most of the boutique brands cannot properly answer to the WSAVA Global Guidelines

    Let's look at reality for a minute when your dogs fodd is mainly comprised of synthetic vitamins and minerals to make up for all the nutritional deficits in the main source of protein in the food. your feeding your dog a science experiment. Less ingredients equals better food equals healthier dogs with reduced risk of cancers and other health issues.

    The breed of your dog alone what matters if you dont have a working breed its pointless to feed your dog top of the line high energy high performance dog feed you have to stick with food that's fit your dog life style. If your dog dont hunt complete or push his or her self to failer then you realy dont need it. An theres only a hand full of breeds that need food. Like german shepherd Belgian malinois the true american pitbull terrier dutch sheperd dog breeds that will work all day

      how do you do this? my cat is a fish lover and loves the smell of fish he meows like crazy when i cook a salmon and loves the fish type of wet cat food the most but when i try to give him straight fish he wont eat it no matter what. but if i have cereal he will drink my milk out of it i have to watch for that. he absolutely loves milk but i dont think its good for him from what ive heard so i dont give it to him. he seems quite healthy i give him blue cat food mixed with urinary hairball cat food. I give him a fancy feast can every other day or every day and little bit of greenies. i put hairball gel in his mouth and urinary gel in his mouth may every few weeks. ive been doing this same method for about 10 years hes 13 years old and seems healthy. h. doesnt have bathroom problems at all never has to go to the vet. i have the best vet but every time i take him theyre just like hes totally healthy. I have to always give him things for urinary and hairballs. i wouldnt know how to do a fresh raw food diet with him.

Orijen is pricey but you're buying quality, not cheap ass shit. Like think about it, how'd you like to eat nothing but McDonalds for the rest of your life? you'd get very sick. Same holds true for your cat or dog. Sadly not many know properly nutrition for their pet.

      +Jonathan Wiebe You're bashing organic foods with articles that actually support reasons why organic is better. The study from Stanford found that organic foods did in fact contain 30% less pesticides, and found less in childrens urines consuming the foods as a result. That is the food you buy at the market. You know how to get 100% pesticide free genius? Grow it yourself. GMO foods require new herbicides that are also being consumed, and if you live near the farms you're breathing it.

      Do you know about Orijen food? Have you researched their brand in particular? The argument between Orijen Food, Merrick, Evo, Taste of the Wild, etc are not that they are "organic" or not, it's because the quality and preparation of the ingredients is such that they provide high nutrient content without losing quality in the processing. These foods are balanced, free from tons of fillers and substitutes, and are minimally processed which helps both with nutrient content and digestion.

    Most vet prescribes food that they have partnered with and if you look at the ingredient it doesnt even have real meat. Like starts with bone meal or chicken meal. I am sorry to say that pet world is a scam and this includes some vets as well.
    I am sorry to say but the best thing you can do is research, read the ingredients and not just look for AFCO stamp. Just because there is a stamp does not mean it's a good quality food.
    First 4 to 5 ingredients should be real meat and innards. There should be Taurine if it is cooked food.
    I am disappointed that a vet made this vide..that's my opinion ..

    Purina's website claims "At Purina, we're passionately committed to making pets' lives better". Recent news has cast doubt upon this statement.
    The president of AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) recently admitted on camera that it is a commonly accepted practice for euthanized pets to be sent to rendering plants where their bodies are blended and cooked into a mixture known as "meat and bone meal" that is used in many dry pet foods.
    Purina is the most commonly purchased low-cost brand of cat and dog food by low income pet owners who cannot afford to buy the more expensive high quality foods. It is also used in many rescues and shelters.
    All of the following Purina dog foods contain meat and bone meal:
    Purina Dog Chow, Alpo dry dog food, Purina Beneful, Purina Active Senior, Purina Fit & Trim, Purina Little Bites, Purina Healthy Morsels.
    All of the following Purina cat foods contain meat and bone meal:
    Purina Cat Chow, Friskies dry cat food.
    Purina does not list the ingredients for its Deli-Cat and Kit & Kaboodle brand cat foods anywhere on the Internet.
    Aside from the horror of your pet eating the processed remains of dead animals, there are more serious health risks. The phenobarbital used in euthanasia has been found to remain in significant amounts in meat processed from euthanized animals. Euthanized shelter pets are often sent to rendering plants with plastic flea collars and ID tags still attached, where they are shoved into the shredding machine and these chemicals and other items are processed into the resulting meat mixture that is used in pet food.

      Eukenuba is pretty neutral overall. It's not really bad and it's not really the best either. Just look at your dog's stools and see if they are consistent. If the dog has watery stools or if it looks like it's hard for them to poop then it's time to move on to a different formula or brand. People can say they know the magic formula for dogs but each one is extremely different in what it can tolerate and what it can thrive on, even dogs of the same breed and even litter.

    Here's how to look for good dog food:
    You look at the back, Check the ingredients:
    Try to Avoid grains, soy, and Corn.
    All Dog foods have fillers, but no two fillers are alike.
    You will find there are either fillers or binding fillers( it keeps the meats and whatnot together)
    Any solid kibble will have binding fillers to keep it together so it won't crumble apart. That part of food is a part of life and is necessary.
    Peas for example are excellent binding type fillers for dogs (and fish) they help the digestive tract and help avoid constipation. I would hope the number 1 filler is pea/similar binding filler. If it weren't I might consider avoiding that brand. Talk to your vet on what vegetables are good in a dogs diet and it will give you a good starting point on what to look out for in dog food.
    Some brands use other good binding fillers that are uncommon that are just as good if not better, so don't let that stop you from choosing a just as good food for your dog if it does not include peas, if that makes sense.
    Dog food companies avoid peas or other good fillers because corn, wheat, and soy is sooooo much cheaper.
    DOGS ARE OMNIVORES, straight meat diet is not only unnatural but is unhealthy. Save the straight meat diets for cats. Cats NEED meats or they get sick if there isn't enough meat and too many fillers. If your food has excessive meats and little to no veggies, I would question it for dog consumption....
    Lastly, MOST veterinary diets.... you know those ones at vet clinic offices on the shelves.... avoid them. They aren't that great.
    I worked at a veterinary clinic for many years, they contract Deals with the clinic to exclusively for use in clinic at a great discount, in return for their loyalty and selling rights (my clinic rarely ever sold food because we didn't need to stoop so low as to make profits from dog food sales.... those companies didn't like us for it but oh well) The deal is exclusive for that clinic because it honestly is not that great and no one in their right mind would buy it otherwise if they were smart enough to read the ingredients and know what is in it and how much.
    With that said Some can and are seriously needed and are good for very specific medical cases, but those are usually never sold to the public, it is through a vet prescription ONLY (diabetes, UTI, etc...) (hence why we on occasion would sell food.That food IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE FOR YOUR DOGS MEDICAL CARE, don't skip it). other than that, the regular perfectly normal dog vet stuff is garbage.
    YOUR WELCOME!!!

    Thank You Thank You Thank You, Doctor!! I knew it, it is all in selling pet owners something that isn't for the sheer need to make MORE $$$$ as many of know, pet owners spend a lot of $$$$ each year on their pets. My spoiled cat hates the more costly wet and dry food. She turns her nose UNTIL I open her preferred brand. I have three strays that live outside and they all get wet and dry food, 4x a day [morning, noon, early evening and late night], which is costly.
