The pipe through the shaft to protect the wires is a genius idea. I usually go slow and steady and it stresses me out. Lol. I will definitely use that idea in the future.
Super helpful. I bought “like new” used Minn Kota 50# thrust Power Drive for my 11’3” Bass Tender. Got a great deal but the shaft is 48”. Cutting it down to a 36” would help solve several issues. I can’t imagine a MinnKota being much different from what I can see.
Hey man. So why do we need to cut the shafts down to 36" i have the 54" salt water xi3 it was on sale for 1/2 off so decided couldnt pass that up. So i got it all mounted to my ss127 and i dont really see why i should cut it down. Its not in the way so was curious if there was any reasoning behind it or guys just like it shorter to cast off the front. Any input helps. Thanks again for your videos. I used your bungee cord idea and the 2 handle ideas. Works perfectly.
That’s the main reason to keep it short and out the way when casting, and when u stow It it’s not all the way back into your deck space hitting your drypod. 36” is the normal length for a kayak. Thanks for watching my videos it’s good to hear they are helping out.

Did you have any issues of the coiled cable being too long after you cut the shaft down and snagging?
No not at all. It stays nice and tight you want be able to tell you cut the shaft down.

Is this the pinpoint GPS model? Just wondering if there is additional wiring in the head to have to deal with
No this one wasn’t the gps model. The gos model has one more cable coming out the head, but you don’t have to cut it.
1/2" ID or OD steel pipe?
1/2” OD and you can use anything you have just keep the wires protected and help protect the friction of that shaft while cutting.
A plastic pipe cutter does a good job also on cutting the shaft.
Yes you can use a lot of different tools to cut the shaft it’s just a composite shaft.
