      I hope to get out again before the snow flies, to see if I can find the bigger brother to that specimen. The glasses were a lark.

    I wasn't planning on picking rocks today.. however my wife is in the local pet shop and I am sitting in the truck watching you try to find some shiny rocks!
    Thanks lol.. wifey probably won't lol
    Edit...that looks like the same kind of area where I have been pulling all the good stuff lately. Pink and greens are good.

      There is one person who quickly clicks on all of my videos and immediately hits dislike. It doesn't seem to matter what time of day or night that I post. For example, on a recent 19 minute video, I got the dislike 3 minutes after it was posted. I am somewhat amused by it and now watch to see how on the ball this guy is.
      I suspect I know who it is and why he is doing it (somewhat similar videos to his channel). The stupid thing is we are not in competition. In my humble opinion, having lots of people posting generally makes people come back to UA-cam and we all get our share.
      What I absolutely hate is someone who hits a small channel with a dislike without a constructive comment on how the person can improve. I have seen some channels come and go because they were sensitive to the hate, which is a real shame. Everybody's videos improve over time. One such channel that I really miss is from D'arcy Cooper "miner or bust". I hope he comes back.

    I found a large calcite cube exposed in granite bolder when I was hiking today. Think it would be worth chipping out of the rock? I hit around the outside for maybe 2 mins with the hammer and chisel before walking away, but I could probably get it out if it was worth something. What do you think?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +1

      If you try to take it out, it will typically look best if you can get some of the rock matrix that is around it. Sometimes there are other hidden crystals with the calcite.

    Being that so often calcite is fluorescent, are you checking them out with your UV light before etching them?

      Really good idea. Can you believe I had it in the truck and also never went into the dark caves and holes with it? Next time.

    Not overly disappointed, you made a joke about your eyes lol, but you should realise that eyesight starts to deteriorate from the age of twelve according to my optician.
    Some of those might look nice faced up, I hate the sugary rocks all those bits that like to stay on your hands no matter what.
    I did think I saw some big garnet clusters in there and a nice white layer of calcite up on the right, someone must have dug out some good garnets at one time and it doesn't look worked out yet, I be back there in a heartbeat.

      Now I know a little bit more of what to look for, I am pretty sure there are some good rocks to find. I am really happy with the small calcite & garnet cluster and would like to see if there is more like that one.

      I remember a wives tale about a linkage to something that starts at about the same age. LOL

    are your soils acidic or alkaline? ours are acidic, I dropped a rock in weak acid and its had no change, so ill have to mix up some ash and water and try an alkaline bath instead.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +1

      The soils change from place to place depending on the surrounding vegetation. I am pretty sure it is usually mildly acidic where there are oak or pine dropping their leaves and needles. Let me know how you alkaline bath works out.

      im still doing the vinegar baths. so im trying to limit to weak acids and alkalines atm.... acids first. once ive worked out how long it takes with each brand of vinegar, I'm really thinking of making my own vinegar from either fermented ethanol or sugar syrup and trying for an ideal solution to rock ratio (got a chemist wanting to help me out). I've got a 7 year old also loving rock hunting with his daddy, so if I use weak solutions he can play with it too :)Further to that, im pretty certain ill be able to go into his school and teach all the kids the love that me and Zac share in rock hounding. besides, if I set up a tank (Plastic gold fish bowl) for them in their library, they can watch the weak acid / alkaline work over a period of a few weeks.
