Please watch: "Cutting UNREAL Agates w/ My Lapidary Saw | A Look Inside Legendary Lake Superior Rocks"
• Cutting UNREAL Agates ...
~-~~-~~~-~~-~
Appreciate you guys watching! I know its a longer one but it was a really fun day so thanks for checking out the video! Don't forget to subscribe to stay tuned for fun winter lapidary projects!!
Your ears look so cold! I kept wanting to put ear muffs on you. :) Don't get all stressed out about finding the biggest and the best - just enjoy your time outdoors. Remember, this is supposed to be fun. :'D Looking forward to your lapidary projects....
Yes I try to tell myself that as well, it's not about finding the trophy stones, I've never been like that anyway so if it happens goody, but I'm so happy just getting out and enjoying nature!
Ooooo! Bedrock! I know it's treacherous right now, esp. with the lake at record high, but it's worth taking a closer look at the outcrop (maybe in July) for the agates in situ. If they're in it, they're definitely on the beach. And I agree with your "bigger rocks, bigger agates" assessment.
13:20 looks like a chalcedony nodule to me. One for the saw to determine!
Porphyry (POR-fer-y), definitely.
Thomsonite only 5.5 max hardness, quartz will scratch it.
Oh man, looking forward to the polishing well build!
Great stuff as usual man! I can't believe you're still out there gettin em! 👍
It's been difficult lol but love getting out! i do look forward to stepping into the realm of polishing and all that goodness! I am hoping to get a saw next year sometime to do my own cutting! I dont want the hunting season to end for 2019 but not much i can do now haha next year will be super fun!
As I sit here hooked up to a oxygen tank, always wear a mask or a respirator when grinding, cutting,or polishing rocks. You found some nice ones out there. Any day one can get out is a great day, if one finds an agate it's even better. You will find that the hobby of rock hunting will consume you. Your house, yard, garage, barn, sheds and every available container will be full of rocks and you will be very content. Thanks for the great video. I really enjoyed it. We have over five feet of snow and it's hard to get out any more. But I do have a house, garage, and every available container full of rocks to keep me busy.
Would you still say wear a respirator when it's very controlled and water is used to grind?? It really had taken a huge impact in our lives and we love it, so much fun! Lots of rocks sitting around and making our trees look nice in the yard lol
@@AgateDad why take that chance. At least wear a dust mask. If you feel confident with your set up then you are probably alright. But keep your eyes on any dust build up. I use a wet/dry vacuum hooked up to a box with a furnace filter on it. Can't wait to see you polishing rocks. So much rewarding fun. I wire wrap some of my agates, they do turn out nice and are in high demand. Have a great night.
joel jeffery- do you have aFB page?r
Hey Taylor, it's happening, you're noticing other colours! It took forever for me to learn to scope for different things. I also always used to reach down and just pick up what I spotted from standing but now that I've been finding stuff on my property I've found so much more by stopping to squat down and scan around. It's amazing how many times there's another one only a short distance away that I would have missed. I'd never heard of thomsonite before, I googled it and I'm blown away by some of the patterns. Thankyou for putting this together Taylor, breathtaking.
Yesh I am trying to notice other colors and I think its paying off lol I do the stop and squat a lot!! Wish I had eagle eyes but nope haha there's much better pieces of thompsonite out there, that's for sure! Thanks so much for watching!! 😁😁
The ice formation are beautiful. Seeing the rocks fall from the heat of the sun was amazing ! You found many beautiful rocks. The agates are awesome ! It is great that are able to find rocks in the snow and cold :)
It was worth it to get out and just see the scenery! So beautiful out, winter has its perks!
Winter has such a different beauty and am thankful for all the changes that come with the seasons... as well as this this new content post from one of our northern friends AD!👍 Thanks for going the extra mile to hunt/film in the extreme conditions then share for all us tubers sir. I must agree with comments below...elbow length rubber gloves for poaching finds from the frigid waters. (or a nice wet-suit and neoprene diving gloves🤔🤦♂️) Little treasured chunks of precious mother earth littered around the beaches, rivers, streams, creeks... all beautiful and just waiting for someone to love em...like you or me! 🎁😁So really am looking forward to seeing the enclosed basin idea for the high speed lapidary grinder come to fruition, mine is not as clean and requires a super loud wet/dry vacuum to keep 90% of the dust down and me wearing a heavy leather gloves a mask and safety goggles looking like a half arsed low budget reject version of a storm trooper..Doh! 🤦♂️ Thanks again for sharing the adventure and the goodies AD, look forward to your next post! Have a nice week ahead~
Haha I am a star wars fan so I would love to see the trooper outfit haha! I am excited to see the well come to fruition as well, it will be brand new for me so I'm sure I'll give some people a few head aches but I need to grow into that as well!
You live in a gorgeous area my brother! Killer finds!!!! I'm headed out today to rockhound. With some luck I may have a video up later today!
Thanks bud, good luck!
Oh noooo! I hate it when I drop one and then can't find it. That was a jasper with awesome agate veins. Dang! But at least you found some awesome agates to make up for it lol...like always haha!
I don't know enough about thomsonite to help on that end. But looking forward to hear what everyone else thinks.
I have one last thing to say...you REALLY make me want to bust out the sled and tubes. Gosh that snow looks like so much fun!!!😄❄⛄
Haha I think they were rough thompsonite, not the best examples. Not sure though, i dont think others think they are thompsonite. It does sound fun to break out a sled, we got one for the little man and he was LOVING it haha
That gray one has a skip-an-atom core
That as so cool! Thanks for the info bud!
So cool that you are going to do the polishing well. I have all the tools but as a nurse am a bit scared of the silicosis worry too. Can’t wait for the video. ♥️♥️♥️
I'm hoping I can make it a controlled environment enough for it to not be an issue..might still get a respirator though!
That is the problem living in the northern climates, short days and everything is frozen. You get relegated to over picked areas, but the scenery makes up for it.
You're absolutely right, some days I leave for work and it's dark, then before I leave to head home...its dark! Makes winters tough but it does help its beautiful when your outside!
I love your videos! The weird pattern in the middle of that grey agate is skip an atom quartz. Very prized find! Bizarre stuff that is theorized to come from the quartz heating and cooling and forming jagged crystals within crystals. Also, I don't see any thomsonite but if you were to find some, it is the ultimate, elusive, gemstone prize!! It is a zeolite and forms those eye formations that looks kind of like eye agate. They are usually some combo of pink, green, and white. I'm just drooling over the agates you find there! It is much more difficult to find them in Michigan!! God bless!!
I recently found some thomsonite, very hard to find!!
Perfect stones and video my dear.
Thanks!!
Did you ever figure out if those rocks were thomsonite or something else? I have several like those. Thanks for any info!
They're probably beach worn agates. I don't believe they're Thomsonite
Just seeing those icy stairs, gave me shivers down my back! Just found your channel and I love it :)
Yeah its cold as ice haha good times though! Thanks so much for checking it out! Glad you're enjoying it!
It's fun to find this one a year later. That first beach looked like Beaver Bay. Love it.
I'd have to rewatch lol thanks though for watching ❤
Duuuuuude the scenery is stunning! You’re not just collecting agates but also collecting spots that I’m sure are gonna produce some beauties once winter is over 👌👌👌
And man!!! 11.36!!! That’s a dream gravel bed! 🤤🤤🤤 haha! Nice finds there dude! I like the banded one that looks like a mountain scene ✨
I reckon it would take a whole troop of hounds searching there to pick it out, and even then there’s gonna be some sneaky ones waiting for the perfect time to show themselves. Gonna keep watchin...
Yeah bro, beautiful finds man! Great vid! And ohhhhhhh man I can’t wait to see the build of the lapidary rock polishing set up!!!! So rad! Keep creating brother 👊👊👊✨✨✨
Haha yeah I think I got in my head when I saw all those footprints and assumed the worst, should have trusted the gut! But I wanted to try my luck at finding some in the lake, I need to get waders! It would be much easier!
I'm excited too lol it's been sitting there for a while just waiting to come to fruition! Thanks for watching bud!!
Thank you for the great video
Oh thank you for watching!!
Very nice! Love that thumbnail!
Thanks Don! Just saw your video pop up as I was getting ready for bed I'll be checking that out tomorrow! Cant wait!!!
@@AgateDad Sounds good brother 👍 talk tomorrow.
Many that I know call the pink within some of the rocks "Michigan Pink", it's not Thomsonite nor Feldspar but unknown the real mineral that makes it up. I have about 30 pieces here myself and some have awesome EYES and or POPPY patterns, even mossy within clear type. Very nice ! The material is very hard so has to be something mixed, for sure over a 7 mohs here. Sorry cannot help with better material makeup
Always have to remember many metamorphosis from the heat/cool cycles can cause things to get all mixed up, IE not in there more pure form
Good info! Yeah those ones are kind of a mystery, thanks for helping!
Wintertime is my favorite time of the year. I do like spring when the trees are budding and you smell that really cool almost off smell. But it smells really, really good. It's like, I don't know what it is, but when the trees are budding when they have like flowers or something, they have a pheromone, it is intoxicating to me. But anyway, I love winter snow. Um, all that jazz, it's my favorite, and I'm just those that tree that you showed with the red or orange, absolutely beautiful, I love how the ice is forming on the outside of the Lea for the flour. I don't know what it is. I think it's a leaf or something that's kind of red or orange and the ice is formed to it. And it just looks amazing.
I live in the Cities but i was up in two harbors just last weekend and could find much of anything. Each beach i went to had three or four other people looking. I hit a few streams 30 minutes away from lake superior and found a few rocks but no good agates :(
Shoot 😔 summer is pretty tough for finding agates, which is great that people are getting out exploring and having fun. But makes the chances really hard.
@@AgateDad My wife and I will be camping up there again at the end of the month for about a week but I don't expect to rock-hound to much this time. I can find really nice agates down here in Minneapolis, I don't think people know to look in the creeks and trails around here lol.
AGATE DAD comes through again, wow. These are awesome! Glad you share your real self!
🤝👍👍👍👍👍All in snow, class! The finds are also beautiful.
Thanks bud!!
@@AgateDad 😊👍
No way you are rock hounding in that weather 🤣
You know it man!!
Yeah the snow is not helping me now but a warm front is coming through so I'll be back to hounding 👍
My thoughts exactly! Hoping to get out maybe wednesday.. we will see. It was -9f this morning so there goes today's hunt possibility Haha
@@AgateDad yeah I'll get 40s this week so get the snow melted I hope 👍
Looks like a ring handle fron a beverage or storage jug..one of my fave finds when I'm hunting I luv the tiny agate with bands all the way around (first find...I think) keep rockin
That's beautiful!
LOVE the crystal hag stone!!!
WOW!!!!!
It's Beach glass?
I love that!!!
9:12 That is not Thomsonite, it looks like some sort of agate. Thomsonite has Chatoyancy in the spray patterns, usually have eyes and don't have agate like banding. Thomsonite is softer than agate, that one looks harder like agate. Thomsonite is not something you will find on beaches like agate outside of the matrix and thomsonite is small. A Thomsonite that size would be so rare you would be lucky to ever find one that big ever really. It is still a very nice looking rock.
Love the fine banding you have on your agates there, gorgeous. My favorite one was the last one you showed of the ones you thought were thomsonite with what looked like blue lines, chalcedony maybe I don't know but it sure was pretty and your find of the day.🤩 Thanks for another great video!✌😎
Hola saludos a todos desde cuba, se que no es para esto el grupo, pero necesoto información, una barrena o no se como le digan ustedes, lo que usan los estomatólogos para perforar las muelas, quería saber si sirve para barrenar aghatas, por favor me podrían decir
Loved this! I especially loved the photos at the end of the agates in the snow. Beautiful!! Thanks for taking us along on your journey. I hope you and our family are well. Take care.
I really appreciate it! Same to you and yours!
A nice excursion into the agate world. Thank you for sharing it with us. 🙂
WOW! Beautiful, be careful.
Always!! Thank you Susan!
Thanks for a great video. You have some very beautiful winter scenery. Great looking finds !*!*! The agates you find are always so Sweeeet. Thanks again for taking us with you today.
Thanks so much!! Winter up here is beautiful! And I'm very very lucky to find such beautiful agates!! Appreciate you watching!
Such beauty all around. This southern boy might even brave the cold for those views, rocks or no rocks. Havagudun my friend.
Haha you might need to!
Absolutely gorgeous! I'm living vicariously through your video. We don't have the snow right now in Michigan but it's been cold. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks so much and I'm so glad I can help with the hounding itch lol its snowing pretty good again today and super cold! Making it hard to get out!!
Landscape looks like a painting so beautiful
Thanks, so blessed to live somewhere so amazing!
How gorgeous! I can't wait until this summer when I come out there!
Even when you think a beach may be picked over, you’ve got to remember that other people’s eyes will be trained to look for different colors than yours, and the angle that they walked by something may not be exactly the same as yours , where maybe yours would let you see it, and there’s did not.. And, when in doubt as to what kind of rock something is? If it looks cool to you, take it home! You can always bring it back if you decide you don’t want to keep it!(as if!)😁👍😆🤷🏻♀️
Oh exactly!! I've noticed I find a lot of reds and oranges but I knownprople who find whites and yellows! Haha that's so true! I know I've left a few rocks out at the beach or pit that I wish I brought home!
I found a gray one once. It had several eyes and was about the size of a cigarette lighter. Very cool! Couldn’t tell you exactly where it is right now, though!🤣 I have to change my guess to 159. Someone has 158.🤷🏻♀️
Lol not to be annoying but could you comment on that video? Males it a lot easier for me to track lol SORRY!
That's so awesome btw!
The one that I said already chose156?
Oh man, I cant believe how many people are still out there with such high snow - including you LOL. So pretty - thanks for this pleasure to see all that beauty! And I love your slideshows at the end - very artistically done ;)
Yeah I'm one of those crazy northerners that cant stop hounding lol its getting pretty tough though. We will see how much longer I can stick it out! I do look forward to winter projects though! Thanks so much for watching!
I adore your determination!!! You’re awesome
Lamento muchísimo so saber hablar Inglés. Disfruto mucho sus vídeos y me gustaría saber que dice de cada roca que encuentra 🤔
😐 I only speak english, sorry.
Gorgeous. I need to start going out for more winter hikes.
You are a brave man to be sticking you hands in the water at this time of year.
I would like to get out on more hikes myself, strictly hiking, much needed relaxation haha
I bet that glass is the top of an old bottle! :o Super cool find!
I love finding the little jellybean size ones. Be careful on the ice 🧊♥️
Oh thank you! It's been a little sketchy lately! I still love finding the little ones!
What a beautiful area you live in x
At least no mosquitos 😃
Can ou swim in the Great Lakes in the summers? - Kat from NJ
Yes...south shores tend to be a bit warmer than the north shore.
Winter's bounty....enjoy.
Beauty all around!
Who can pass up a gravel bar??
Not me! That's why I'm in AA though...Agates Anonymous 😏
@@AgateDad Us either surprised we don't end up in ditches! (with the truck)
@@stinkygraykitty6808 🤣👍👍
I have a question on some rocks,
What's up!
Can I send you some pics?
I know I have agates but what kind of agates ya know?
