I met a girl from Wisconsin who asked me what I liked to do. I said I grew up hiking the trails above my home town of Santa Barbara. I asked if she'd like me to take her creek crawling and trail hiking up into the mountains above the city. We found miners cabins, metates, and the trails of the Chumash natives. We honeymoon hiked parks and ruins in New Mexico. We've been married for over thirty five years. Blessings on you both.
I grew up north of Santa Barbara. We used to go back behind Cachuma and red rock to go artifacting. Found some amazing Chumash points, a huge spearhead, and a fully intact pendant with a perfect hole drilled in the middle. Amazing area

@@1nvisible1, I have to disagree with you, and it is based upon my experience living through the real hippie days of the 1960s and 1970s with the birth of Earth Day and the artwork from Height Ash-berry and the psychedelic poster art that drove most contemporary artists and their work. There is very little doubt that one of the previous comments was probably correct in estimating that it took someone at least 10 days of fairly steady work to complete and I also concur that I doubt that anyone with any brained would be willing to carry it in/overland as a completed project when they could bring the tools and have an actual “Love In”!

I really like your videos. I am part Apache and Pueblo Indian. My dad grew up in New Mexico near Pie Town on the Criswell Ranch. I am George Criswell's grandson. My dad told me stories about growing up on the ranch and how he would ride to the hills and explore the canyons, He said he found several of what he called cliff dweller ruins. He said they were well intact with whole pottery, arrowheads everywhere corn cobs, and burnt corn cobs still in the fireplaces. I never went to the ruins because my Grandfather sold the ranch which was over 46000 acres long before I was born. Anyway, I wanted to tell you this because I thought you might want to research it and maybe you could find the ruins my dad spoke about. The Criswell ranch is on the internet today as it is being sold off in chunks. I hope this becomes one of your videos. Thank you again for letting me relive a memory of the stories my father told me.

yes indeed. Looks Sumerian. I dont think a hiker went up there with a hammer and chisels and carved this on a camping trip then left it there for people to admire.
Looks like someone lived there for an extended period and started to set up the cave, out of necessity, as the ancients could have. That thing wasn't carved in a day. A week, semester, idk. I'd call that a gift to the world, maybe there are good and bad traces to be left.
I highly doubt someone did that recently. Have you ever tried to carve something in wood that size? That takes a lot of time even if they had power tools.

I spent many years living and working in the South West, until I was transferred to an office in Eastern Washington in '89. I'm not an office guy, I worked construction as an electrician. I got to see quite a bit of the Southwestern USA over the years, but I didn't realize how much I missed it until I found your channel. Stay safe, won't you? I'm soon to be 73 years old, and somewhat relegated to the role of armchair explorer. You folks make that something that I can live with. So thanks, and my very best wishes for you both.

I used to think your wife must be a special person to let you run off by yourself all the time, but to have her join you makes her *REALLY* special! I enjoyed watching the two of you explore together, don't stop!
You remind me of the way my wife was with me . We were at our best working together . I lost her to cancer July 12 2022 . Let Evelyn go with you often , don't let the special moments pass when you can share them making the experience exponentially better .
You need to definitely have your wife with you from now on because the trips/trails you hike are not always safe to be alone. She adds more life and love to your videos. She’s an extra pair of eyes and a great companion. Awesome video!
This is the best advice to give. The buddy system can be applied to many types of activities. 1 person is fine until it's not. Then it's too late. Adding just 1 more person opens the options and possibilities _infinitely._
@@Mindsi 1st thing is you need to have emergency numbers from that area plugged into both phones. Next, plot out and discuss the intended route from when you leave the car to the destination. Just a general direction from the car. And distance in a direct line to the destination. This is to simplify and reduce wasted searching. For instance, if one person can't be moved and the other gets out, to tell rescuers "he is North Northwest from where we parked, about 3 miles as the crow flies" or "East Southeast from where we parked 3 and 3/4 miles as the crow flies.' Whatever the case may be. It will help immensely just by knowing a general distance and direction. While hiking, always keep some distance between the both of them. Not a lot, just keep each other in sight. This way, if something happens to 1 person, it won't likely happen to the other, leaving them to seek help if necessary. Now IF something happens....say 1 person slips, falls and breaks their back. Hopefully, you can call rescuers and tell the direction and distance from where your car is located. Then just keep the injured person from moving, provide shade if possible, and keep them hydrated. When you hear voices yell to get their attention. If you hear a helicopter, get to a clear area, take off the brightest, biggest piece of clothing and wave it in great big circles to be seen. But if there is no cell service, then the uninjured person provides shade, leave the injured with some water, and hike back out to the car as fast as safe as you can. Then either drive or find cell service to call emergency. Then everyone go back to where the car was parked and give the distance and direction and go along to help locate the injured.
@@michaelmoore7975 is correct. The buddy system is best. I would add that smoke is also good at getting attention if you don't have brightly colored fabric. Also, phone a friend (or two) before you go so that if you both end up in trouble, your friends can notify emergency services for you. I love these channels but I worry for our host. Climbing these steep canyons, with no safety gear, all alone?

i gasped too when i saw it....... i cant believe what modern humans will do. destroying sites left and right leaving less and less of the historical sites of the ancients to learn from. Leaving us nonsense that serves no historical use beyond "at some point some asshole came in here and carved his modern crap into stuff that was some of the few remaining pieces of evidence of ancient civilizations".
I've just been following this channel for a relatively short time and decided to recommend it to my husband tonight. That one small tree growing out of that small patch of soil is a perfect example of how even in a minimal environment life expresses itself so beautifully and powerfully! God you are AMAZING! ❤️
That tree reminded me of my wife and I going to Volcano National Park in Hawaii. Out in the lava fields you could spot something green growing here and there in that rock. Just enough crack to sprout up a plant.
I'd say it's nature that's amazing. Give it some credit! I find there's more beauty in the fact that such incredible complexity and history can form in a universe without an "intelligent designer." As physics plays out, this is what happens. From the most distant galaxies in wavelengths we can't even see with our human eyes to the microscopic life only resolved with technology like electron microscopes, all truly wonders to behold. Giving some sky daddy all the credit would ruin the beauty of it all.
How lucky are you? Fantastic views, exploration, now you introduce your beautiful wife. I love your show and you bringing us along to see the art and architecture of the ancestors and of coarse the nature.
You have a great heart of respect and appreciation for the ancient peoples. When i was 18 years old (1998) i went to the Smoky Mountains to camp, it was my first time in nature, I am from Chicago, and it was a good time! At that time i’ve never heard of the phrase “Leave No Trace” or anything about outdoor ethics! I remember my friends and I started driving away you could see our mess (cups, paper towels, paper plates) it just stood out like a sore thumb! I forced them to go back and we cleaned up put everything in bags or just inside our car and took it to the visitor center and threw it away. That experience changed the way i looked at things and even now i go out of my way to clean up whenever i go hiking or camping!
I’m glad you understood that instinctively. Having grown up during the national anti littering campaign I just assumed that was part of everyone’s upbringing now, but if the understanding comes from within that is even better.
I’m 58 yrs old and never knew places like this even existed in the US until a few years ago. I love your videos. These videos should be shown in schools so young kids can learn from them!
The stone face looks very contemporary and apropos. A talented artist felt inspired and made a tasteful sculpture for us to enjoy. It is not vandalism or graffiti.

Sure, having someone to share the day with is excellent. As an old man, I vote bring your wife along. If you were a couple that fought all the time, leave her at home, but that is not the case. Take her with you. Build memories!
The sculpture near the end is the epitome of true art. Someone went to this place, looked at the stone, and had a vision that he (she?) was compelled to make manifest. They stayed in this place for a week or two or three, long enough to coax the vision to reality. They had no power tools, no dust collector, no electric light, only a hammer and some metal chisels. They had no intention of selling the vision for thousands of dollars, or of it being reviewed in the recognized publications that cover art, or of throngs of viewers flocking to see it, only the compulsion to bring it from his (her?) minds eye into the select eyes of future possible viewers. You were privileged to be one of those rare viewers.
Completely agree, and I can't understand why it would be wrong to make that art. And I suspect if you were camping or living in the area in the modern day, you'd want to use a natural shelter like that, even if it had been used before by first peoples. I would never disturb a site with evidence of ancient habitation but I could see building that shelter if I was staying there for weeks. Maybe the proper thing would be to demolish the shelter after you leave, but I don't see the point personally.
It's one thing to be able to admire the beauty and grandeur of the desert solo... but it's 1,000 times better being able to share it with the one you love. ♥
That carved rock was amazing and even though it was an ancient site and I do believe in leaving everything alone, it does say that human life goes on and that it wasn't just for the ancients, we really don't know how old that is but I don't think that it was such a bad edition. I think if there were only a few ruins out there that I would probably be more upset, but they're scattered all over the place and more are discovered every day, so yeah, that's pretty amazing. I hope you got a lot of pictures
As an artist, I was just thinking about this very question watching this channel several videos ago. Where are contemporary artist able to leave their mark on nature? Tough question. The sculpture placement was pretty good.

I just HAD to pause at 14.00 just now. My venturing person, Hubby, finished his last quest in this life 08/12/2020. He was disabled and couldn’t explore like you guys do now, and I am now 65 and unable to explore like this. Jim would have so much loved watching your videos. This one in particular has me blown away! I paint/sketch. The view where I paused to type this, is so amazing! To think that generations upon generations of young men have probably camped with other strong Fathers or brothers, and probably went on their first hunt, the coming of age. I can also see a group of family etc spending a season of time there, to hunt also to grow things. During the cold days, the Sun would warm the rocks and protect little ones from harsh winds. It was alot different with Evelyn along with you. It had a calming effect on me as sometimes I get a little nervous watching you out there all by yourself. I served my country for 9 years as a Commando in the Army. I learned the value of the buddy system in case something bad happens. Also I actually liked her bubbly personality and seeing you guys exploring together and having fun. From the other comments i read on this adventure I think everyone else enjoyed seeing Evelyn with you as well. I always enjoy watching your videos but this one was a pleasent twist to the norm. In my opinion I think you'll get more views and likes by bringing Evelyn along with you more often. For me It had a calming effect because I didn't fear you taking a fall with nobody there to help. Hey there Drifters, just wanted to say thanks. I grew up in New Hampshire, and at age 17 hitch hiked out to Tucson. Loved it. I spent many years living and working in the South West, until I was transferred to an office in Eastern Washington in '89. I'm not an office guy, I worked construction as an electrician. I got to see quite a bit of the Southwestern USA over the years, but I didn't realize how much I missed it until I found your channel. Stay safe, won't you? I'm soon to be 73 years old, and somewhat relegated to the role of armchair explorer. You folks make that something that I can live with. So thanks, and my very best wishes for you both.
I too am and armchair drifter in eastern WA(Spokane). Can’t walk far so will let these youngsters do it for me. Enjoy the beautiful places brought to me.

You need to definitely have your wife with you from now on because the trips/trails you hike are not always safe to be alone. She adds more life and love to your videos. She’s an extra pair of eyes and a great companion. Awesome video!

This is the best advice to give. The buddy system can be applied to many types of activities.
1 person is fine until it's not. Then it's too late. Adding just 1 more person opens the options and possibilities _infinitely._

@@Mindsi 1st thing is you need to have emergency numbers from that area plugged into both phones. Next, plot out and discuss the intended route from when you leave the car to the destination. Just a general direction from the car. And distance in a direct line to the destination. This is to simplify and reduce wasted searching. For instance, if one person can't be moved and the other gets out, to tell rescuers "he is North Northwest from where we parked, about 3 miles as the crow flies" or "East Southeast from where we parked 3 and 3/4 miles as the crow flies.' Whatever the case may be. It will help immensely just by knowing a general distance and direction.
While hiking, always keep some distance between the both of them. Not a lot, just keep each other in sight. This way, if something happens to 1 person, it won't likely happen to the other, leaving them to seek help if necessary.
Now IF something happens....say 1 person slips, falls and breaks their back. Hopefully, you can call rescuers and tell the direction and distance from where your car is located. Then just keep the injured person from moving, provide shade if possible, and keep them hydrated. When you hear voices yell to get their attention. If you hear a helicopter, get to a clear area, take off the brightest, biggest piece of clothing and wave it in great big circles to be seen.
But if there is no cell service, then the uninjured person provides shade, leave the injured with some water, and hike back out to the car as fast as safe as you can. Then either drive or find cell service to call emergency. Then everyone go back to where the car was parked and give the distance and direction and go along to help locate the injured.
@@michaelmoore7975 is correct. The buddy system is best. I would add that smoke is also good at getting attention if you don't have brightly colored fabric. Also, phone a friend (or two) before you go so that if you both end up in trouble, your friends can notify emergency services for you.

Leaving us nonsense that serves no historical use beyond "at some point some asshole came in here and carved his modern crap into stuff that was some of the few remaining pieces of evidence of ancient civilizations".

That tree reminded me of my wife and I going to Volcano National Park in Hawaii. Out in the lava fields you could spot something green growing here and there in that rock. Just enough crack to sprout up a plant.

I'd say it's nature that's amazing. Give it some credit! I find there's more beauty in the fact that such incredible complexity and history can form in a universe without an "intelligent designer." As physics plays out, this is what happens. From the most distant galaxies in wavelengths we can't even see with our human eyes to the microscopic life only resolved with technology like electron microscopes, all truly wonders to behold. Giving some sky daddy all the credit would ruin the beauty of it all.

When i was 18 years old (1998) i went to the Smoky Mountains to camp, it was my first time in nature, I am from Chicago, and it was a good time! At that time i’ve never heard of the phrase “Leave No Trace” or anything about outdoor ethics! I remember my friends and I started driving away you could see our mess (cups, paper towels, paper plates) it just stood out like a sore thumb! I forced them to go back and we cleaned up put everything in bags or just inside our car and took it to the visitor center and threw it away. That experience changed the way i looked at things and even now i go out of my way to clean up whenever i go hiking or camping!

The sculpture near the end is the epitome of true art. Someone went to this place, looked at the stone, and had a vision that he (she?) was compelled to make manifest. They stayed in this place for a week or two or three, long enough to coax the vision to reality. They had no power tools, no dust collector, no electric light, only a hammer and some metal chisels. They had no intention of selling the vision for thousands of dollars, or of it being reviewed in the recognized publications that cover art, or of throngs of viewers flocking to see it, only the compulsion to bring it from his (her?) minds eye into the select eyes of future possible viewers. You were privileged to be one of those rare viewers.
Completely agree, and I can't understand why it would be wrong to make that art. And I suspect if you were camping or living in the area in the modern day, you'd want to use a natural shelter like that, even if it had been used before by first peoples. I would never disturb a site with evidence of ancient habitation but I could see building that shelter if I was staying there for weeks. Maybe the proper thing would be to demolish the shelter after you leave, but I don't see the point personally.

That carved rock was amazing and even though it was an ancient site and I do believe in leaving everything alone, it does say that human life goes on and that it wasn't just for the ancients, we really don't know how old that is but I don't think that it was such a bad edition. I think if there were only a few ruins out there that I would probably be more upset, but they're scattered all over the place and more are discovered every day, so yeah, that's pretty amazing. I hope you got a lot of pictures
That sculpture was incredible! Absolutely blew me away. I think you're right it's a modern artist who was carving that and using the cave as a studio.

I just HAD to pause at 14.00 just now. My venturing person, Hubby, finished his last quest in this life 08/12/2020. He was disabled and couldn’t explore like you guys do now, and I am now 65 and unable to explore like this. Jim would have so much loved watching your videos. This one in particular has me blown away! I paint/sketch. The view where I paused to type this, is so amazing! To think that generations upon generations of young men have probably camped with other strong Fathers or brothers, and probably went on their first hunt, the coming of age. I can also see a group of family etc spending a season of time there, to hunt also to grow things. During the cold days, the Sun would warm the rocks and protect little ones from harsh winds. I’m just thankful I found your channel. You guys spend as much time together like this that you can.❤ Happy Trails to you both? What’s the most unique little thing you ever found ie button ?

It was alot different with Evelyn along with you. It had a calming effect on me as sometimes I get a little nervous watching you out there all by yourself. I served my country for 9 years as a Commando in the Army. I learned the value of the buddy system in case something bad happens. Also I actually liked her bubbly personality and seeing you guys exploring together and having fun. From the other comments i read on this adventure I think everyone else enjoyed seeing Evelyn with you as well. I always enjoy watching your videos but this one was a pleasent twist to the norm. In my opinion I think you'll get more views and likes by bringing Evelyn along with you more often. For me It had a calming effect because I didn't fear you taking a fall with nobody there to help.
