@@AtTheHandle There was plastic under the paper on the edges. Paper helps to absorb drips, and the paint doesn't flake off like it does with plastic, creating cleanup issues. Plastic is fine for areas that receive very little overspray, anything that is receiving heavy amounts of paint, needs to be Paper. No flaking, and no dripping, it just makes everything easier.

for sure. Just myself and a helper. 3 days prepping. 1-1.5 days masking and spraying on a typical size bungalow is the norm. 2 days if its a relatively new home with little weather damage.

i first used a Graco airless 1973 up untill 2010 and would only use extention like the 1 you were using on ceilings/ and roof recoating done very little masking , as with using gun only , you have much more control, ,/using correct pressure helps, oh and the tip you are using can be got in china for 5 aus dollars ( my son ordered 100 last year ) he was paying 70 dollars each, here in aus , so somebody making an easy quid,/ anyway keep up the good work

hi Idaho, as for spraying oilbase, i personally would just pump a litre of turps/white spirit then straight into PVA/ acryllic , never had any probs , with the lines. even left material in lines for a week or more without hassles
You would figure the "turps" would yellow (amber) the hell out an acrylic. PVA is a great primer but dirty as hell when it comes to the excessive solids that's natural to the material. I have crushed many of "filters" in both the gun and the towers of my sprayers. Sherwin Williams stopped selling the PVA where I am years ago, I actually loved it

I have been painting for 33 years and I have done quite a bit of spraying. But in the end, I always end up with brushing and rolling. What you did there on the siding with all that overspray prep would have deterred me and I would have brushed it. I went down this rabbit hole many many years ago of finding a way to spray houses in general and never found a time effective way to do it. I spray the odd thing, and I spray much of my ceilings, but beyond that I find there is no time or energy savings and the stress level is high when you spray. I tried HVLP, I tried handheld units, I tried masking guns, nothing allows me to get the house painted faster than just brushing and rolling. The main problem has always been overspray and the second problem is fisheyes and other issues solved with brushing and rolling. I have had a Graco 495 for 17 years and have used it a lot, but the older I get the more I rely on brushing and rolling.

I am younger than you. I interior paint and spray the ceilings as well but brush and roller the walls and trim usually. Usually, it's a long day but can get a whole house masked by myself and sprayed the ceiling before I leave for the day. it is much quicker for ceilings that's for sure. I sometimes use it for baseboards as well, can mask a whole house baseboards and spray 2 coats faster than i can brush them. Door trim and window trim is usually brushed. Hybrid painting lol.
The last couple weeks I have been prepping the exterior of my house for paint. I’ve got it all scraped pressure washed and halfway done caulking with Sherwin-Williams 950. This guy is good but be no means is setting the bar for other painters. I for one do not follow anything or any methods he uses. I am also a painting contractor. I do spray but back brush as well to ensure proper coverage. I have watched a few of his videos. For homeowners or new to painting he is great at these videos. He serves different clients than we do as well, meaning we do high end only, not blow and go in and out.

I got a Graco X7 for 50 bucks at a yard sale this week. Was excited to use it and went in not knowing anything about paint spraying. The sprayer did it's job well but it was hella over spraying. The whole room I painted got all misted. Even the rooms over got paint on them even though the door in the room I was painting was closed. Il definitely try lowering the air pressure because I believe I had it set to the max. might check out the tip as well
Not lost was the scripture reference. Professionalism is important. No loud music etc. To avoid any conflict with employees and music my policy is headphones in one ear other ear free for safety concerns. Thanks for the video.

I'd still put 2 coats on even though it's the same colour. Light coat on the 1st and a little heavier on the 2nd. Better coverage and avoid runs and misses if trying to cover in one coat.
And I have watched a couple of your videos and find it interesting how other painters do there work. Your tidy and make it look easy, because really it's not that hard. 80% of my work is spraying roofs or exterior houses here in New Zealand. Cheers for the videos.

yeah same here, on the 2 coats. even on doors i like to do 2 light coats to avoid runs as enamel can be harder to spray without getting sag or runs.
If you are doing new work or renovation there's usually no floor product installed, just plywood or concrete on floor. When you start spraying the lids, notice if there's a lot of paint on the floor. This is the first indicator that whoever is spraying is staying too far off the wall. Get as close as possible and move very quickly. Be very consistent. Inside,bad spray habits burn a ton of flatwall. There's no way to control over spray outside other than using small flat tips on a Graco silvergun with a barrel filter. The wind is what causes over spray. Outside you can turn down your pressure and load up siding,stucco or most rough exterior substrate with a stringy runny yet non overspray load of paint ,avoiding the edge by a foot or so, then take a nappy sheepskin roller and wet roll the wall. This let's you paint fast and zero drips or overspray. That's how you control overspray.
Yes it's nice to see that there still some pros out there doing it the it the right way. Using a shield should be the first thing to learn how to work with. The .515 and spray rig were also fine choices and a good tip on tieing back the hedges. This 10 minute video would be a valuable tool for the novice and DIY'er, The only thing missing was the Rock & Roll! Nice job brother.....Peace.....

I completely agree with you on the shield and 515 tip. No matter how much prep is/has been done I feel lost without my shield!! Learning how to hold it where needed and spraying with one hand is the way to go. The 515 tip, well that's more or less your "go-to" for general spraying, get those 2 down and your way ahead of the game if just starting out. I would only add that if one is going to spray more than just your house as needed, it is really nice to know what the #'s mean in reference to the tip "sizes. Take the first # and (usually) double it for the fan width, and the last 2 are the actual hole size in thousands of an inch, so a 515 tip has a 10" wide/tall fan and a .015" orifice. Once I took the time to look what the #'s meant it all made sense and I could easily grab the right tip for the job, prior to that someone would yell Hey grab me a 413 tip, HUH? Sure the #'s are stamped on it, but what's wrong with what your using? LOL...

An I use a Graco Tex sprayer as my well Hopper and compressor and my large hose and gun and buy some sort of 515 tip for it very very new heard from a Graco blog that it could be used as a sprayer also need some guidance could one throw some knoldege real fast for me much ablidged

My neighbors are so good at painting that they even painted my car!!! I told them before they started painting that this would happen and they said yeah sure we have 20 years experience. Some people are just wired differently.

Goodmorning yes Over spray Will Fly Especially the Higher your up. But still blast Everything on the Ground. Cars etc. We litterly block of streets around Parking Garages etc. But people don't care. They will move our cones. Remove our paint tape. We had people move are 5 gallons buckets. And park next to our paint sprayers. On Very Large jobs the city. It can't be totally controlled With ignorent people. We actually blocked entrances to parking garages. People have gone up the wrong way to park in Garages. I don't mean 5 cars. 80 to 100 cars. Due to are time on contract deadline. I tell my guys cover cars. With plastic. When your dealing with. Deadlines. And ignorent people. And really big Numbers. You let the Paint fly. (Small number of details vs 600k project) as I tell my wife Do not Park around any Construction project anywhere Residential or Commercial it's Just Common Sense.
@Darrell Brown That's in a Perfect world. We tell Everyone moves there Cars people are ignorent. And aragant. We flyer cars two days in advance knock on doors. If there not gone. Paint is a Flying. Especially on Commercial jobs. Which are Normally over. 60k it's just a numbers Game a full wax job cost $350 tops. Time is money.

This guy does not know how to prep, the siding next to the cement you put 12 inch paper so you can spray directly without a shield that plant has over spray on it. I was doing this when he was in high school good intentions maybe but I don't think he's a union painter but I do complement him I was thinking about doing the same kind of post. I noticed he said we anyone worth their weight can paint that house in a day by themselves. I can paint stucco houses prep and paint in one day, paper and tape is my helper but it's amusing to watch an apprentice.

I always spray my trim first. Then I mask it like you do - Paper around the edges, and plastic inside. Then when I spray the body, I pull off the masking and the trim is already done.
I California cut my trim. Goes FAST and looks awesome.
@Dave Morrison: I agree and most always do it the same way as you. The only time I wouldn't do the trim first and then mask it is if the customer picks a darker trim color than the body/wall. It should be obvious why I apply my lighter colors first.
I don't like masking new paint. I assume you haven't had any pull off with tape? I heard bad things so I just avoid it
@@mohnjarx7801 exactly scrambler that's why I dont do trim first. If you do it Idaho Painter's way you can mask the window, then spray the body, then roll the trim all while the paint is still wet on the body. If you trim out windows first you have to wait for them to dry, then mask, then spray, then unmask. Just my 2 cents
its because he always does a french finish or whatever its called... in other words seems like they usually just paint the face of the trim, not the sides like you do as 1 should.
I've been followingbyou for some time, and this channel has been a great source of information and knowledge for my projects. One video that I have not seen is, how to clean up or remove overspray. I've unfortunately had some on my vinyl siding, and I'm looking to see how it's properly done without damage to the vinyl.

--I'll add my old company coated an entire parking lot with white epoxy over spray! Epoxy is a little harder though, you need around 3,000 PSI and a large tip just to pump the thicker material.

You should always be spraying at the lowest pressure that gives you a good spray pattern, i.e. long and narrow with no "tails" at top and bottom. You should test the pattern on a piece of cardboard or such.
That depends on the tip. Better if new. Wore out tip just makes a mess and wastes paint. I use a411 for large areas and a 311 for soffit and fascia. Indoor trim I use a211 tip.I use a new tip for every job. Great videos dude. You know your job.
@@keithhampton9700 A x11 tip sounds a little constricted for full bodied exterior paint. A x13 or x15 would be normal for the generally heavier bodied exterior paints.

I worked for a painter that hated masking and using drop cloths. He would rather scrap and use a wire brush struggling to clean up cement he got paint on. Terrible work habits. Also, he would paint door hinges and cabinet hinges. To me that’s unexceptable. I recently moved into a rental where everything and I mean everything was sprayed the same color and all semi gloss including all hardware. The owner has given me permission to fix it.

But watching Mexican painters do an entire apartment complex if something to behold. Very little paper masking - mainly round light fixtures. Everything else is done with a shield. They spray walls first and later another crew comes back to paint the highlights and go over the overspray. But somehow there is very, very little overspray anywhere.
Crazy ladder safety practices too - 30 ft. up the guy perched on top shakes the ladder to move it left and right and reach further. Holding a paint can in one hand. Makes me scared to look at that every time. Super fast work. Never mask cars on the parking lot. The work is always very precise.

if you do end up getting overspray on a window and dont have time to take it off right then. i suggest using a hot damp towel to whipe it off the heat and dampness takes it off way easier and faster than a razor blade scraper plus no risk of scratching the glass

Good morning, I bought a used Krause and Becker airless spray painter and it sprays on it's own any suggestions?

This guy has mad skills I try using the 311 on trim strain it thoroughly constantly having to flip my tip clogs quite a bit I I've switched to the Titan 413 less of a headache for me I seem to get pretty nice results with this
tip size is too small for exterior paint without dilution... that is why you are getting clogs. Read the Paint Can, it'll tell you the tip orifice size to use. 0.015 to 0.017 is typically the number which equates the the last 2 numbers of your spray tip.
Write thank you I'm aware of this.. I'm referring to when I spray cabinets or indoor trim the 311 clogs.. can I use the 695 I have just given up on 311
@@billgoforth7426 are you diluting the paint for cabinet spraying ? I dilute it when using a smaller orifice size like 311, if you read the paint can it'll say if the paint is dilutable or not and how much to dilute it by.
I usually don't try cutting it on the cabinet paints.. but I will try in the future thank you and see if this helps maybe I'll give it one more try
@@billgoforth7426 some cabinet paints require you to dilute them in order to get a better finish, you might need to lightly coat it twice for full coverage but generally it's a nicer finish in the end. Good luck in the future!
Is that about a 30" extension, when you release trigger, don't you get the spits? I have and then you get that little stream of paint on the siding, what do you do about that?
Keep a roller handy and smooth it out right away so it dont dry in
Y0ou don't get the 'spits' unless your gun needs a packing adjustment or needs repaking. length has nothing to do with it . brent
I think it's much easier to wrap up with an appropriate drop cloth.

I thought the video was informative for anyone. doesn't matter your experience. I told one of my guys today that it doesn't matter how long you've been doing your trade. there is always something to learn to make you better. all these guys complaining are just to lazy to mask off windows. I don't give a shut how hood you are with a sprayer and a shield. you WILL get over spray on a window if you're spraying near it. it may not be a lot. but cleaning paint off of windows and other objects takes way to much time. a few hours taping off goes a long way

I bought a Harbor Freight house brand airless sprayer at a pawn shop. Thanks to your videos I have half a clue how to use it. Painted my house, and the first third or so I thought the spray pattern wasn’t what it should be (too narrow for a 5/15,) and I was going through WAY too much paint, so I swapped in a new 5/17 (pretty thick paint) and the rest went well. Not a professional job, to be sure, but far better than it otherwise would’ve been.
your pressure was too high on the 515 which is why you went through more paint, the 517 worked better because you used the same pressure as the 515 and a 517 has a larger orifice size.
"the tips work for 3-4 houses or about 60 gallons" what?
Because the machined orifice of the spray tip gets worn from high pressure in a small tolerance area.
Chris just saw your "store" awesome! We live in Northern California (for now) small town and not many options. We are moving your way hopefully in the spring.
