How To Climb A Tree With One Stick | Is One Sticking The Best Option?? (Video)

  • One stick climbing has been all the rage the past few months. And rightly so, as more bowhunters are prioritizing being as mobile as possible. I took the plunge last year and have added one sticking to my saddle hunting repertoire. That said, it may or may not be best for all situations. In today's video I go over my one sticking gear, and how/when I usually use this vs my two stick climbing method.

    The OHM Tether Locker has a loop right behind the clip that is intended for clipping dynaglide to. It works great because you can leave the tether locker clipped until you get to the base of the tree then pull on the retrieval line and unclips it and loosens the repel line at the same time. Great video!

    I was hating one sticking until I stopped trying to get max height with every move. So much less frustration making 4 moderate moves than 3 stretching as far as possible.

    The Ohm Tetherlocker you are using has a loop in the end near the lock that you should put the Sbiner for your pull-down rope through. I also pull my thetherlocker off the rope (holding the quicklink up) but even if I/we forget to do that, the pulldown rope will pull on the Sbiner and pull the lock off the rappel rope freeing up the quicklink, and then the pull-down rope, Sbiner, and thertherlocker rope will pull down the rappel rope.

    Great video, I followed your video today and it was very successful. The only thing I did different is using a linesman every time climbed the aider. I also think the fact I have saddle hunted for 2 years and that has made me very comfortable in trusting my saddle and equipment.

    Really liked this video. It was well done showing the whole process. I like the idea of not pushing for maximum height each move. I’d like to get a better look at how you wind up the rappelling rope on your arm.

    Real good video. Clear concise good camera work and editing (retrieve rappel rope). Especially like idea of moving from bottom of stick. I struggle from top step so this looks way less effort. Will practice during off season. Thanks

    Good tutorial thanks! My only suggestion might be to add an autoblock when rappelling just to be extra safe. Easy to clip it to lineman loop on right side, and cheap insurance too. Obviously the Safeguard is much safer than just an ATC but It’s possible to panic and pull that lever back and let yourself down, let’s say….much faster than you’d have intended.

    QUIKEST : Small old school " lineman's belt" the kind with 2 D rings , "flip line" ( I recommend the Petzl Zillion with mechanical prusic) and a pair of tree climbing / pole climbing gaffs...Out here in the Pasific Northwest our Pine, Oak Fir and Madrone can have some BIG horizontal limbs to rope into and just sit on with an attached butt pad.

    Good video. Something I do different is; I clip on my Madrock Safeguard to my bridge before I start up the tree. Once off the ground and on the stick, I then attach my tether/rappel rope to the tree. On a hunt, while attaching my tether to the tree, a group of deer showed up. I stopped moving, not to alert them of my presence. This happened before getting my Madrock clipped to my bridge. Once the deer moved out of sight, I had already forgotten that I was not attached to my tether. Luckily I realized my mistake before attempting to make a movement to advance. Before this happened, this was something I never considered.

    The picture in the mad rock are related to rock climbing. The little person would be the climber or where you're attached to the tree. The hand is for the direction with the belay. Just an FYI. Great video, thanks for the demonstration!

    • @truthfromthestand9994
      @truthfromthestand9994  2 роки тому +1

      Possibly. I can use without making noise so I left it as is. I wouldn’t want to add any extra friction. It pulls harder when retrieving the rope when it’s wet. Wet rope on wet stealth trip could be problematic.

    I know some guys don’t like climbers but in 15 years of hunting Michigan and Southern Ohio I’ve only had maybe 10 times where I can’t get into a decent tree. And it is so incredibly fast! The lone wolf ultra light and summit viper. This method looks hard. The guys I see who use 4 sticks move much faster and it looks easier. To each his own, just a thought.

    • @jmythngdmb
      @jmythngdmb Рік тому

      Problem I have with climbers is the bulk and weight. I ran a lone wolf climber for a while which is way better with that stuff but that thing is so small that once you are in it it’s like standing on the top of a 4x4. Just wasn’t for me, I’m afraid of heights. However……. You can use a saddle set up with a lone wolf climber platform… like a hybrid setup, I think I need to try it out next. Currently I SRT into the tree and it works, but it’s tedious.
      EDIT: lone wolf hand climber part I think is how guys are doing it, not the platform
