Some of the comments crack me up... maybe a bit of work but no more than carrying a 20 lbs climber in to the tree. I sweat way more carrying a heavy stand to the tree than climbing with one stick, it’s really not that much work. Take your time slow is smooth and smooth is fast. And as for dropping your stick, put a small paracord loop on the top step and a paracord theater to your harness, problem solved. I personally use a nighteze gear tie on top as a handle, I grab that handle first before disconnecting the cleat.

I do foodservice delivery for a living. I appreciate how each movement needs to be accounted for. I see comments about sweating and exhausting work. efficiency efficiency efficiency. That's the name of the game. Take your time, make movements count. Don't be in a rush. I don't care how you climb the tree. Your body is basically a machine. The faster you go, the more heat you generate. If your gonna be in the tree for several hours, why go up it like Mario Andretti? I personally like the method he demonstrated. Rappelling looks very nice. This also might solve my need for a custom pack for carrying a lot of climbing sticks. Very nice video Carl.

I use SRT for preset locations and a lone wolf hand climber for ‘going in blind’. Just leave a paracord loop if I ever want to hunt the tree again. The system he uses here is pretty sweet though! That roll pouch is sweet. Cmon Tethrd if you guys market that you’ll sell a ton of them!

Loved the video and i think i'm going to switch to this method. With practice it looks no problem. You could use a prusik instead of that belay device then just use a belay loop/ black diamond atc/ petzl reverso to descent or even a munter hitch (know your knots before you try any of this.
As someone who used to climb a lot i shudder when I see people dropping or throwing gear on the ground. It may seem harmless but if you drop a carabiner on a rock or especially a belay device it can knock things loose. Its been force fed to me that you never drop things that hold your life on a line and you never step on the ropes. Inspect all your gear everytime you go out. stay safe out there people! enjoy the hunt.

Nice setup. I do almost the exact method but without that awesome rope carrier so my climbing rope/tether gets let out and hangs down while I climb. I carry a hand ascender as well. If I need to come down and grab a dropped stick or come down for a break I rappel down and SRT back up. I also carry a 10’ tether/lineman to go around limbs or sometimes I may need to reposition at the top.

I notice that the stick that Carl is using in this video as well as the stick that DIY Sportsman is using in his video look very similar to each other and to the "One Climbing Stick" that Tethrd is planning to release soon (in early 2021). Is the Tethrd One Climbing Stick the result of the prototype that Carl is showing or is there some other common ancestor to all three?

This is my preferred method to climb if I dont have a preset and would not be srt climbing. Only thing I would add to this video is that once you're at climbing height I would use a prussik or some kind of safety knot above and below the belay device just in case the device failed or you accidentally moved the lever on the madrock also the device is not designed for hands free activity. You could always transfer to a tether as well to be on the safe side.

@Kathryn Roberts is right. Just use a lineman belt.

For me, by the time limbs are encountered your fairly high. I’d employ a second tether perhaps. Lineman’s rope is fine, but a slip, kickout or any mishap would be a rough drop till the lineman rope caught.
