I've had gold fish in ponds since i was a child, never used a pump/air stone and never had any problems. Just have some oxygenated plants and let them go. We've had gold fish live passed 10 years.
Same. I’ve grown up with a pond. All the goldfish lasted 12 years until a really cold winter froze the whole thing and killed them all. That was a few years ago. Now I’ve got ones that were born in the pond and are coming onto 6 years old
sondrag2 not really. If the pond looks healthy you should just leave it alone. It will keep functioning. If anything, put a pump at the bottom every 2 years in the springs to remove some of the waste (as it contains ammonia and other rubbish)
I had a Heron pick off 4 of my somewhat large Koi. I never actually saw it, but I figured it had to be a Heron. So I bought a motion detecting sprinkler and it worked immediately. The next day I found a bunch of knocked over plants in the pond (presumably the Heron landed and than had a panicky launch as it got sprayed). The neighbors said they saw the Heron perch in a nearby tree later in the morning and stare at the pond for over an hour, but in the weeks since he hasn't gotten any more fish, so I would recommend a motion sprinkler (like Orbit) very much.
Would also recommend a decoy heron, we bought one and the heron that was bothering us never came back into the garden. We’ve seen it lingering nearby once or twice (on neighbours roofs) but it has never been near the pond! Has worked a treat for us
I was keeping Koi in my garden 45 years ago, I dug the hole and put in double plastic sheet, filled it with water, bought the fish and they lived happily after and 2 years later sold them all when I moved. I never bothered with the 50,000 pound filtration system, UV set up or even had a youtube channel. None had fluke, puke, cuke, luke or muke either.
Best way to stop cats,, I found growing Curry Herbs near by, it's not harmful to the cat, but they dislike getting the smell on their fur. They will stop their prowling, spend time grooming and thereafter give your garden a wide berth.
luckily i have put air stones in just in time and i also trickle fill with hose once a week and let the pond overflow overnight reducing the blanket weed and renewing some of the water.
Male comet chasing female comet, nice. Breeding time. You should get them as a pair in a container with either hornwort or hyacinth as egg catcher holder
thanks for sharing I lost 4 huge koi due to heat and lack of oxygen corrections were made right away by adding more air in water and doing some major clean ups inside pond and filter
Very informative video....I found the air is a very important part of my success with koi...also the large filtration with bottom drain. I lack a little with the disease I would have to call an expert. I used to have a heroin problem till I rebuilt it 4+ feet deep with no shelves.
Useful video thanks. We tried fish in the pond when i was a kid but they all died, some sort of fungus?. Trying again now as an adult for my own kids, solar powered filter (we cant get an elec source out there) and pump which produces fountain, medifin and an anti chlorine additive if we need to top up the water. a few oxygenating plants. I hope thats enough. I read to stop feeding in the winter as the fish (we have 2) semi-hibernate nearer the bottom of the pond. Plus chicken wire cover to try and deter predators. I have an algae control additive but not used that yet.
I saw a growth on one of my comet pond fish but it seems to have disappeared now, we added some more filtration and the pond tests were good for water quality so I appreciate all the disease info in this video it is very helpful, thanks! :) I have 2 comet / koi mixes that have those beautiful flowing tails they are very healthy and a father / son pair.
When a pond reaches 50, 000 gallons with a maximum depth of six feet, is oxygenation and waste products a concern? (I think not; my fish have lived through one winter with ice covering the water for about five months. I live in Montana) It has 12 goldfish about six inches long. No other fish, just lots of bugs, salamanders and frogs.

I’ve got a small above ground pond. Nothing in it yet, I’m worried about winter (I’m in UK). Do you think shabunkin would survive in winter above ground?
My pond is fairly small (2m x 2m and 0.5m deep) but heavily planted and there’s a lot of sticklebacks living in it. I want to get a few small goldfish for it but I don’t have a filter or pump or water fall or anything it’s just a wildlife pond. Will a single goldfish be enough to destroy the whole ecosystem?
Harry Mellor no, but you need a filter if you want some unless you undergo water changes often. Goldfish are dirty and grow big and often can’t be housed with any other fish but your pond sounds big enough to get a few. Just keep in mind that a filter needs to be able to cycle 2x as much as your pond.
What to do in tropical region where temperature rises to 50C in summer and 2C in winter. I am planning a 26000(19x11x4.5 feet) litre pond wondering if fish will survive.

Bubbles mean there is a chemical in your pound it also means that your fish is matting but other then that there is so many reasons that there is bubbles. My former eco-paradise natural pond/lake quickly died after a 3G shredded tyre sports field was installed 130 feet from and 30 feet higher than our water level. Pond or aquarium? 1. Fish die if it's a new set up. 2. Or if you don't change old water and pick up dead leaves and roots from plants. 3. And or if you don't clean but keep the same filter sponge media. 4. Change old water once every 3 to 6 months, same for filter sponge media.
Blue Phoenix Tail Lionhead you advice is not great, sponges can be cleaned with the same pond water on a bucket because they hold beneficial bacteria, whatever changes can be made every week, or every other week, at least 10% water change, NOT MONTHS. Sponges can be used all year long and change them when you turn your filter back on in the spring. Imo

Hi Eileen, hope Ur fish by now R well on their way!! I have a pond as big as Urs and I have 10 koi and R pushing the size of Ur fish (17 inches), 17 is a little crowded. I have never had any prpblems with any of my koi fish and I do breed them. I dont for any reason follow any koi book on as we call professional measures on caring. I use no chemicals or salts for any reason, or for that matter facy filtration gimmicks, I use a simple filtration method, a bucket filled with small rocks, pipe going in pipe going out, cleaned completely weekly!!!! I use rain water for the most part out side of well water for the water in the pond, 70% water change weekly (this is the key factor not some fancy filtration) my pond is shaded, no plants or foreign objects in the water for good looks out side of great looking koi fish. A good grade food is required as far as Im concerned (I make my own food). Water changeing is Ur best means of longevity (Weekly). Happy koi keeping!!!
Thank you for replying,at the time of extending the pond we didn't have these fish,my daughter in law got them off a friend for me.I think they must have had drowsy when we got them ,we are going to extend the pond by an extra 7 ft x 5ft.I do a 70% water change Every week and do a water test,my fish are swimming about and coming to the top now better than before.they seem a lot happier.just not looking forward to the winter.Thank you for your advice.
If there was algae due to lots of sun, a few cloudy days can kill a bunch of it. All the dead plant material starts decomposing and turns the water bad. You want to hurry and change out some of the water. This can kill the fish in a day or two. By the time the fish are gasping, maybe hours.
So... Let the algae grow but have plecos in the water so they can eat half of it and balance can exist. Have plants that won't be harmed by the plecos if they have algae to eat. Add some angelfish in the pond so it can protect your goldfish from those evil little bugs that will attack them. Have gravel and maybe some sand in the pond. Have some big rocks too so the fish can hide from birds. Don't overfeed your fish! The plecos don't need special food for them unless there is no algae. One of my plecos went mad when it saw the new pleco i've added going to that special spot with more algae under the gravel XD I think those rules i've added should be important for the pond to succeed with living fish in it.
Not only this gentleman is very well spoken, but he's also most funny. I couldn't stop laughing about his statement that you can't go out shooting you cat, or the previous one, unfortunate and of course the correction [fortunately] you can't kill the suspected predators because they are protected by law 😂
please help,i got 16 koi last week.when i got them home one seemed to have dropsy so i separated and treat it best i could.this afternoon i have lost another large fish which looked well apart from a blood bruise under the skin i did a water test last week and everything was ok.i have 17 koi in a pond 7ft x 4ft x 3 1/2 ft deep it has a large filter which is on all the time, water goes down fountain, and a small fountain in the centre of the pond, which is on now and again.ive treat the fish after i found the dead one, with sanikoi bactimon, what am i doing wrong please help.thank you

Could have been carp pox. This usually has to do with the cold temps and will disappear when the temps raise.

Those waterlilies do not look to good. Have you been using an algeacide? That is what it looks like to me.
what about if your fish are at the bottom of the tank and dont swim a lot????
i mean not tank a pool pond
Will direct expose to rain kill fish?
No you dont have to cover your pond.
Pond pumps should be left on over night as at night the plants make more carbon dioxide
My sisters fish died by getting stuck in the filter is there a way to prevent that?
Healthy fish wont get stuck to a filter, the fish was already sick
Everyday Aquarist like it got sucked in to the filter and got all like shredded up is that still the case?
@@stanloona19 wtf?
Crusty.we had extended the pond about two weeks before we got the fish.the water tests were spot on.one of the fish we had to
Isolate as it had dropsy the other fish was 16 inches long and was fine.when it died it had a blood spot underneath it.treated all the fish and now they all seem happy.Thank you for replying
Thank you for replying,at the time of extending the pond we didn't have these fish,my daughter in law got them off a friend for me.I think they must have had drowsy when we got them ,we are going to extend the pond by an extra 7 ft x 5ft.I do a 70% water change
Every week and do a water test,my fish are swimming about and coming to the top now better than before.they seem a lot happier.just not looking forward to the winter.Thank you for your advice.
Mine all died after we had like two days of rain. Very strange. Swam on side & gasped for air
yeah mine too. and its still dying every day. one by one
Rain infuses nitrogen into the water and reduces oxygen levels
If there was algae due to lots of sun, a few cloudy days can kill a bunch of it. All the dead plant material starts decomposing and turns the water bad. You want to hurry and change out some of the water. This can kill the fish in a day or two. By the time the fish are gasping, maybe hours.
Excellent, thank you, never quite understood the nitrate and algae thing.
One of your goldfish at the backround is ready to breed!!!!
Yea I was like so we just gone ignore the fact that his goldfish is spawning 😂

Are there medicines we can put in the water that can kill parasites in the water and treat the whole pond if fish are sick
yes
Dank Clouds what types
@@lonewolf2242 pondcare melafix.or api pond melafix. good for bacterial infections
One of my plecos went mad when it saw the new pleco i've added going to that special spot with more algae under the gravel XD
I think those rules i've added should be important for the pond to succeed with living fish in it.
Oh ye when it’s like 5 degrees in the uk
plecos cant live off of only algae
Not only this gentleman is very well spoken, but he's also most funny. I couldn't stop laughing about his statement that you can't go out shooting you cat, or the previous one, unfortunate and of course the correction [fortunately] you can't kill the suspected predators because they are protected by law 😂
Can someone help me out?
Is water Lettuce good oxygen
Hyacinth or hornwort safer, if only goldfish. Koi will eat roots, bastard kois... Both goldfish and koi will devour water lettuce lol
I found my koi died and i feel very bad why I didn’t see your video before 😞 she both died because of warm water 😞
please help,i got 16 koi last week.when i got them home one seemed to have dropsy so i separated and treat it best i could.this afternoon i have lost another large fish which looked well apart from a blood bruise under the skin i did a water test last week and everything was ok.i have 17 koi in a pond 7ft x 4ft x 3 1/2 ft deep it has a large filter which is on all the time, water goes down fountain, and a small fountain in the centre of the pond, which is on now and again.ive treat the fish after i found the dead one, with sanikoi bactimon, what am i doing wrong please help.thank you

It’s just called neglect and bad care.
Plants will make oxygen but at night carbon dioxide
2:38 dude your goldfish are spawning
All of my koi fish died today, I’m finding a reason why but I still don’t know ):
that's too bad :(
Did you check your water for ammonia and your ph ?
Yeah, wild animals are the worst.
Over feeding is the main reason why our fishes die
I’m sorry
How many times in one min can wee say YOUR FISH WILL DIE!
They dont...
I'm loosing 100 post juvenile every day
Birds
All fish die. All animals die. All humans die. If you live on Earth, its an unavoidable eventuality.

You told untruth. They are still alive.
