Have you tried Mexico? I'd take my puppy to Poland for teeth cleaning because in Canada the cost is unacceptable. In Poland almost 10x cheaper so it makes sense to travel yhete for my dog and excellent & inexpensive medical diagnosis for myself. Dr. Jones. I hope you realize how important your presence on yt is... 5 years ago my dog was diagnosed with cancer. At the same time I lost my job because I was concentrating on my dog too much, like taking him to surgery...
After they sucked out all of my savings I finally got smarter and gave up on the bloodsuckers. Never went back. I started to research and learn how to take care of my pets by myself. Your advice was invaluable in the last months of my yorkie's life. It still continues, it helps a great deal with caring for my other pets.

I simply said I couldn't afford it, they came back in with a nearly $300 for 1 week round of antibiotics, saying I'd likely wind up needed two, plus the initial $75 visit fee. I said no thank you, paid the $75 when the tech informed me they would approve the medicine if I ordered it somewhere. She was always very vain and wanted to go with the root canal. I think the dentist picked up on her vanity and played on that. Nothing was ever done because the tooth never bothered her. I took my 16 year old cat to get blood work done as I could tell his health was declining and he had a runny nose. He didn’t usually have a runny nose. They did the bloodwork and wanted to give him an antibiotic. I knew I had heard about that one as a risky one. I declined it so they gave him a lighter one. They were angry that I refused their suggestion so I was greeted in the hallway by three veterinarians. They said that I didn’t give them my senior cats vaccine status so they refused to finish the appointment. I took my boy home and a few months later he was struggling so I took him to another vet. That office was way more compassionate. They did blood work and told me he was in stage 4 kidney failure! The other office never told me his blood work results! He passed away 3 weeks later. I think it is sickening what has happened to most of of our veterinarians. Putting profit before our beloved fur babies

When I refused, the doctor became real offensive making me feel like I was a neglectful owner. I left and studied up, then asked to put her on prescription food. I've been with the same vet since 2008 when they were private. They just sold to a corporation about a year ago, as did the other two vets in my small-town rural area. Dog dentals went from $350 to $850, office visits went from $35 to $75, they now charge $12 dollars for the tech to count out my dogs' pills. So, I went price shopping at the other two corporate vets in the area and the only prices they would quote were for the office visit and the per night weight-based fees for boarding. The costs of all other possible procedures were met with "it depends". The only emergency vet in the area charges $1,000.00 to walk in the door. When I moved here in 2008, I had four dogs and three cats and could afford to take good care of them. Now I have one dog, and I don't know how much longer I'll be able to afford to keep him, which is really upsetting because I am 79 and live alone so he is my bestiest friend and companion. And I'm sure I'm not the only senior who will eventually get priced out of having a best friend. I find it to be disgusting, while simultaneously being really sad. Thank you for this video!

Last month, my cats were given surgery at a clinic I thought was independently owned to get them fixed. The front desk women insisted that they HAD to have flea and tick treatments. Three times I told them NO. I clearly said that I came for the spay surgery on both cats and NOTHING more, NO shots, NO vaccines, NO other treatments or checks. This is winter. They said it is their "POLICY," and that they were doing it "to protect me." I told them I didn't want it, BUT, they gave them pills that last a whole month anyway. I lost all three of my beloved kitties in the past 16 months. The 19 and 20 year old had cancers (yes, they had long lives, but they deserved better!), and my 9 year old Maine Coon kitty soulmate Thorin Thunderpaws died of pyothorax disease. Just the diagnosis, three chest taps and euthanasia for him totaled over $8,000, because every vet clinic in my city has been taken over by private equity firms. The pet's well being is at the very bottom of their list of priorities; they just want everything in your bank account, AND whatever you can borrow from the credit card options they offer.
The past 16 months has taught me that pets are now a luxury item. I've never been without one in my 59 years, until now. I think pet insurance is what is bringing these corporations into veterinary care.
I worked in the optical industry from the 80's into 2010. During that time the insurance companies got into providing eyecare insurance.
It went from a $40 eye exam to $35 co-pay for said eye exam. From $100 for a pair of glasses to a $35 frame co-pay & a $35 lens co-pay. Basically it cost the same out of your pocket before & after insurance.
I see the same thing happening with vet insurance.
I live in a rural area & we have a rural vet. The prices are unbelievably affordable. I just pray they don't get bought up by a corporation or they start taking pet insurance.

This really resonates with me! You will recognize with whom I am associated (specialist). He told me he used to take pride in telling people he was a veterinarian. Now he avoids it, saying the way the profession is heading is deeply disturbing to him.
I still work part time in the animal profession. I continually stress to people to find out who owns a practice. Look for privately owned practices because they tend to take ownership of things, too. And I stress that if you do not authorize a procedure, you should not pay for it. If you take your car to a mechanic for a brake job and they (unbeknownst to and unauthorized by you) replace your transmission, you pay for the brake job and tell them "Thank you for the free transmission".
These investment corporations are akin to the ones buying up rental units and jacking up prices beyond belief, to hell with affordability. Same kind of crap, different pile.

For most of our older dog’s life, we had a wonderful independent vet. He was the same vet who cared for my husband’s dogs from when he was a boy. When he retired, we went to a local vet without knowing that it was a corporate owned place. It’s Binford Pet Wellness clinic. It’s bright and shiny, but we never see the same vet. It’s always a new vet each time. They always seem to push some expensive test or drug. I don’t do it unless it’s very urgent. I found an independent vet for our young Golden. I have to drive 40 minutes to get there, but I always see the same man, and he takes the time to listen. And he’s willing to take a rabies title rather than just giving the shot if it’s not needed. I love this video.

They recommended $5K back surgery on my geriatric Chihuahua who had little life left! This was absurd. I instead used my alternative rural farm animal vet who was helping with my younger dog who then managed his condition with low cost laser treatments that got him healthy for the rest of his short elderly life until he was 15 years old. He also make you part of the process...he believes all pet or livestock people need to know the basics or you shouldn't have an animal period!
I know far more the most vet techs and I handle my own animals...some are afraid to get bit, kicked or even scratched...hardly anyone wants to do a feral cat for instance. That is my specialty now.
I have brought so many people thru my Vet's clinic it has almost been to my own determent...people go there never quit going.
You have an advocate for independent Vets for sure!!

I just switched vets after having a 2 year nightmare with the previous one not making any effort to assimilate my nervous, rambunctious and very vocal lab into their clinic. Luke had never shown any agression whatsoever but it became clear the vet was afraid to get close and he wasn't being examined properly. $4K later I realized I had made a poor choice for my Fur Buddy.
I went to a new vet and was immediately thrilled he was welcomed with toys, treats and lots of snuggles followed by a thorough exam.
They new I was thrilled. When I got home and read my E mails I found one from the "clinic owner". She said she had heard how happy I was and if I would please leave a review and they would credit my account $20. I felt sick. Paying clients for positive reviews, I felt sick. 😮😢
Had the rest been smoke and mirrors?

Thank you Dr Jones. What you've shared is very helpful.
I started taking my little dog to a Fear Free Vet to be groomed because he's so reactive
and can bite. He had to be sedated to be groomed. The estimate had all kinds of items on it that he didn't need and I requested they be taken off the total cost. It brought the cost down considerably but still way too much.
Now I will be checking what vets are corporate owned in my area.
I have been to a few other vets when my older dogs were alive.
I've noticed all the vets send me the same ad for dog food or other items.
I thought that suspicious that all of them were sending the identical ad to me.
If the vet I'm taking my dog to is corporate owned the challenge will be to find
one that isn't and someone that can just groom my dog and work with his
reactiveness. So far I haven't found any groomers willing to take the time to
get to know my dog and build relationship thus I chose a Fear Free vet although they still ended up sedating him.
I'm not willing to support corporate vets and want an independent vet who won't
find the need to charge outrageous prices plus adding unnecessary charges to support a corporation. And hopefully one that grooms responsibly when it comes to a fearful dog or a groomer that does so.
Thank you again. I so appreciate you stay on top all this!

We do cat rescue and care for feral colonies. It wouldn’t be possible without a truly ethical and skilled veterinarian. She has never charged us an emergency fee or told us to take an animal to an ER vet. Her costs for routine exams are about the same as anywhere else, but we’ve saved probably 10k in costs for dental work and other surgeries. What needs to get done, gets done, but she’s definitely not padding her bills.

Vet medicine practices like human medicine. They will suggest tests that may not be needed to protect themselves from law suits. We have an independent vet practice nearby, but the prices are expensive. We also have a local low cost clinic for vaccinations and spay/neuter. Their prices are 1/2 of what both the independent/corporate practices charge, so I use them whenever I can.
I am lucky that I have a strong background in Human medicine, so I am willing to ask questions regarding treatment plans.

Even if the practice is owned by a veterinarian the business is incorporated. It's all about the money. If a veterinarian does have lower prices the other vets or the governing body for veterinarians will make sure that individual raises prices......or else! I worked as an RVT for 15 years. The first five years seemed normal. Toward the end I was more like a sales person. Every client HAD to leave with a purchase such as dog food shampoo etc. Don't get me started on the heartworm testing. People would say "I have given my pet the mediation properly why do I have to TEST my pet EVERY year?" We recently had to have very specialized surgery performed on our Dachshund in order to save her life. Cost was unimaginable but the outcome was good. What bothered me was how poorly we were treated. Staff were rude, indifferent and cold. Made us wonder how they treated our dog.

I now have three cats. In October the FIV+ one I had passed away. Afterward I adopted another two. My oldest cat is seventeen. Today he had blood work done. Everything was in the normal range except for one that was slightly elevated. The veterinarian and I got into a discussion (again) about my feeding food that I make. If something that I am doing is "wrong" what is causing my cats to be healthy and living long lives...I probably know more about feline nutrition than many veterinarians do. It's not something to take lightly and do thorough research on. And yet, they keep on pushing and expecting clients to feed inferior food. Could it be that it has something to do with profits? There's some pretty nasty food that's being offered. Ever notice how many distractions there is and how distracted we are? I kinda think that it has something to do with our ability for attention being compromised and having others doing our "thinking" for us. I'm not opposed to being successful and making money. I also know that there's so much more to life than acquiring massive amounts of wealth and materials possessions. The relationships we have with our pets have real meaning. To all the vets who recognize this and are doing their level best to provide care for animals, thank you. It is truly appreciated!

In my part of the world (Southern California, USA), smaller veterinarian owned hospitals are increasing their pricing to match the prices of those corporate owned hospitals. They justify it by saying they are simply forwarding price increases they are experiencing. My old veterinarian (retired) used to charge a base price of ~$80 per dog for annual dental cleaning (if no extractions), my new veterinarian base price was $940 in 2021, $1,200 in 2023 and $1,400 in 2024 - - per dog! Why? I was told they were simply forwarding the price increases they were getting for services and drugs, like anesthesia, which were caused by the freight delivery issues (originally caused by COVID). I know there are still import issues originally caused by COVID, but nowadays they are related to FDA regulations for medical devices, test kits and other products related to COVID-19 - - not veterinary supplies. Still those high veterinary prices remain. I have done a ton of research to find a good, honest veterinairan that charges reasonable prices and I have not found one near me. They are all doing and charging around the same prices. My veterinarian is among the more reasonably priced around here. Veterinarians deserve to make good money, but this is highway robbery.
