lol, Onyx is definitely quite the character. Thank you for all the content and your hard work. Seeing another comment, liberty in a field is definitely difficult... Frankly I think being able to just catch your horse without them running away for 30 minutes is a fantastic feat (that was my horse when I first got her. Wanted absolutely nothing to do with people.)
I have a very cheeky gelding, he's half Percheron and half Friesian. And if you leave your power tools anywhere he will definitely pick them up and carry them away he has to be into everything you're doing
You 2 both made me laugh so much I need this today but now I want to try my horse out with this I think she would like it alot she has a very similar personality to Onixs 🤣🤣
Can you please please do more liberty videos!😍 I’m training my horse on liberty and used this today and he done amazing! I need more ideas on training this worked so fast!
haha my little black Icelandic, even though she's a mare she's also a fun and playful and mostly happy to work but when she gets confused it only takes a second and she's gone xD I can get her to come back and participate fairly easy thankfully
Been doing groundwork with my almost 8 yo brood mare- this was before I purchased her 3 months ago and she has birthed 3 according to her previous owner. She’s an absolute joy and has a playful personality. Very in tune with me in the round pen. I have only ridden her with a Bosal but she was very defiant- to the point of getting rub marks which I felt awful about. wouldn’t move but no bucking etc. Got a level one snaffle and we will see. I would appreciate any advice. Side note- rode her in a very small round pen bc that’s what was available at the time, she became noncompliant outside of that pen with the Bosal.
My 10 year old palomino is exactly like Onyx is, curious and playful, and has to sniff all the poo🤣 Ryan, have you found that most people do not like horse like this, because they are challenging?
Hi Ryan I’m one of your Patreon members. This was super interesting for me as my horse is an identical personality to Onyx. Just wondering how to respond when he comes to me with this exercise (which is working well) but then wants to say nibble my boots or fiddle around with my stick? Obviously I don’t want to ask for personal space but not sure how to correct the distraction. Also the slight ears pinned while circling at liberty is very familiar. I’d like to know if that’s a negative attitude or just personality? Thanks for all your videos👍
I've been teaching my horse to ground tie with the voice command "stand" with my hand out in a "stop" sign, and by dropping his lead rope down in front of him with a lot of energy. Then I walk around the round pen and he is supposed to stay where I left him. Is this lesson going to confuse the tar out of him?!
This youngster reminds me quite a bit of my QH gelding -- everything is a toy and when he's bored with you, he walks off to find something better. Too cute. I do have a question if you have a moment -- when you were getting him to circle around you the second time, at one point he turned to look at you and started to pin his ears. Was this mild aggression or something else? We have a mare that will pin her ears and turn in while either online or at liberty and I've always driven her away when she does this. Is that the wrong approach?
@Nouveaux she'll turn in, pin her ears, and rock back like she's going to rear. Sometimes she'll push in on you -- usually a well-timed pop with the whip or end of the lead rope will snap her out of it
@Nouveaux Hmm -- not sure my response got deleted... anyway, yes, she is opinionated and I'm glad she is. I like horses with personality. She's still green in her training, I just wasn't sure if driving her for pinning her ears was the best response or not. I'll keep working with her and keep trying different things. Thanks 😁
Tried this with my 20 y.o. QH palomino and worked like a charm. My question is should I avoid lunging her in the round pen while starting this? Would it be too confusing for her?
I'd say you can do both, it's about clear body language / communication. As long as you're clear in what you want, they're more than capable to understand. I ride my horse in classic dressage style as well as western, and she intuitively understands both perfectly.
Please be careful with the words you use. B-u-g-g-e-r is a Brithish slang word that you might want to look up. I don't want UTube to Ding you, but it's a naughty word. I love your channel. Thank you.
Eh I feel like liberty does work in a field.. if the horse wants to leave it means you aren’t being engaging/appealing enough. They know when they need a break. Let them work with you because they want to not because they’re trapped in a pen with you, imo
Ryan, as a teacher I can tell you that you don’t ask if something makes sense to everyone. Instead you ask someone to explain what they think you mean or you ask for hands of who does not understand. Just a thought that will help you read your audience w clarity.
I have one starting Cupcake in a large arena, years ago. After that one, I just do the same process in a field. Doesn’t matter if it takes a while to catch up with the horse.

Haha! I like a horse with a sense of humor as long as the joke isn't always on me. 😄 Onyx the comic.
😂 I knew a horse like that! He was the best, and most fun to ride cause he was such a twerp! If he liked you, he picked on you!!
I agree. They are so alive and fun.
“That was a good joke. No one laughed but I felt pretty good about that one…” 😆😂 @2:20
It WAS good, Ryan.

Rick's gonna love the pink roundpen.
I just adore Onyx!🤣🤣 You are so patient with him.
Thanks for breaking down thru all steps and using analogies of "hot lava" or be "with the herd" ALSO the great advice of do not over work,

Who are you to deny his dream of being a contractor? 😂
Did anyone else see the deer run by at 10:32? Great video as always Tyan.
Horse saw it.
That "... Or not" got me laughing so hard
Love this horse! Great lesson!!
The deer just casually crossing in the background :D

Appreciate you sir! always helpful for real
Onyx and Wyatt are brothers from another mother! Cheeky, mouthy, always looking for trouble! Great video!
Right!?
Onyx reminds me of my gelding. I feel like my gelding is already pretty tuned into me, but I'll try this for fun.
Have you ever worked with donkeys? Love the videos! Thanks for sharing them.
Great information! Thanks Ryan
Love it. I have a red headed mare and mini mule just like this.
Omg 😆 I love this gelding!

Fun! Onyx is great! Love the video!!
That was informative and very fun!!
That was really cute
Love that lesson!!!
He acts just like my Andalusian. Very playful and gets board easy. Always trying to chew on something.
Great tutorial,
He's everything you would like in a horse, haha
I like this one a lot!

That was the perfect horse for that demo! So, can you lead a horse by the tooth? 🤣

This is great but for now my round pen if full of grass and very distracting. 😆 Am working on that though.
❤️❤️❤️
The floor is lava lol
What if they don't run off?

What size round pen are you using?
Would it be bad to tack and trail him after this?

I need help to gain respect from a off the track throughbred mare that doesn’t have respect for anyone and runs from me if I go get her

You can train liberty in a field. It's not liberty if the horse can't leave.
