As a long-time teacher, I can say that I don't remember ever seeing a more engaged and willing pupil than this budding horsewoman. She demonstrates a remarkable level of receptivity and desire to learn, and her developing skill set is apparent. Hi Ryan. I really admire this brave ladys TRY ! When trying to learn all the mechanics of riding you feel like there's a million things you're trying to understand all at one time. This is such an excellent video. This gal is working very hard to understand and manage her horse in a better way. Ryan gave such clear and concise feedback and guidance. There is ZERO to criticize here as it’s a work in progress. All very positive and I wish her the best.

She is doing pretty well for someone who hasn't had any concept of pressure and release before. A huge part of why he is slowing down is her seat. She is just stiff from nervousness and inexperience so she is riding behind the horse.
Yes! The late Jane Savoie would teach this same method to get your horse to respond to a whisper light aid. She would also say to ask 1st with the whisper light aid and if they don’t respond immediately with a SURGE of energy from behind and whole heartedly, then you need to correct by giving a bump bump with the leg or leg and touch with the whip but not to hurt or scare the horse, just enough to send the horse forward to the next gate or go get the correct reaction. Then she would have the rider “RE-TEST” with the whisper light aid. So many of us have been told and taught to kick kick kick, squeeze harder and cluck cluck cluck or dig the spur in or hit hard with the whip and never have even had one instructor teach type of method. So many horses are just dull to the leg and other aids and then get a label or just keep getting ridden in the wrong way.
Jane Savoie would always say when teaching the horse this method that “ you never want to leave your horse with the correction, you always want to re-test with the light aid and get the correct surge from behind and the correct response to our light aid, otherwise they are still learning to going off the stronger harder aid rather than the feather light whisper aid.”

Great videos to see how you teach someone else to do it rather than you just riding and doing it. Informative watching her improve and understand. She is a kind rider..possibly too kind and the horse knows it. Great job teaching her how to get him to treat her as a leader.
I think she tends to mentally and verbally make excuses on the horses behalf which then gives the horse a sense of scoring points as him being the leader since she then kinda quits. Once she starts to empower her mindset and her leadership, and use Ryan’s suggestions as habit, I think she’s going to love this horse! He clearly CAN respond to “please” with “yes ma’am.” She got it and said it. She needs to nip the little things promptly. Then she will be able to progressively get better results with less. I think if she watches her lessons after her rides for a period then she will develop great habits and will make excellent progress. 🤗
Part 1 and Part 2 were almost identical to my first lesson with trainer Laura Salo (maybe you know her). We got excellent results too! I've been looking for help with my horse for years and now I have it both in person and in this video!!

I think it's what my coach taught me on the ground... I groundwork a respectful bit speedy horse. When I want to make her stop, I have to release all the energy I have, otherwise she feels my energy and can't stop. When I want to make her move, I just have ro raise my energy before giving the cue, otherwise she's confused (she doesn't unddrstand why I ask to "go" with the non-energy for a "whoa". Think at this kind of energy you raise in yourself right before clapping hands and telling children in the playground: "time to go home!" To make them go with you. Is more subtle than the sitting or any other cue. I still can't rrally notice how my energy is, so I rely on the horse to tell me. 😅
Ryan, so often when you say “Does that make sense “ and your student says “yes” (I wonder if it does) I think, I need more time for it to sink in, I need to know more.

Hi Just an off topic question. How do the cowboys manga to ride in jeans, without having the seam at the back chaffing your butt, or the material on the inside of your thigh and saddle bunching up and chaffing your legs? i find it very uncomfortable.
Considering the way he moves in the video, and assuming he's had a lameness workup, and the fact that he's a warmblood, the owner might want to consider the possibility he's suffering from MFM (myofibrillar myopathy). There is some excellent research information available online. Just a possibility, but worth considering out of fairness to the horse.
Nah...he isn't going anywhere. His gaits are lazy. To evaluatemovement the horse should be in working gaits...this "trot" isn'teven near his working trot. I feel so sorry for this rider.
Great advice, but also wanting to point out that horses, like people, come in many different personalities and energy levels. So some horses are just plain resistant to working without a lot of prodding, no matter how good the rider is.

Lol, I’ve been riding a good number of years and she looks better than I do! I take regular lessons. Unfortunately we are not all born riding prodigies (although most UA-cam commenters are), and the only way to get better is to keep riding and learning - as she is doing :)
It's hard to keep your seat down on a big tall horse with a big stride. I had a 17 hand quarter horse and I couldn't keep my butt in the saddle. Every gallop or trot I'd pop out. I even tried holding onto the back of the saddle my trainer made me sit on my thumb at one point. But on my 15 hand horse and it was easy peasy.
She rode fine. She's trying out something new for the first time. Her reins were loose for most of the lesson - she was definitely not hurting him in any way.
It doesn’t look like the horse is capable of moving more forward. He is cooperative and he’s trying but, he just can’t do it. It certainly doesn’t look like a behavioral problem. Perhaps he needs an evaluation by a Vet….maybe Vit E deficiency or EPM.
I agree, presents as very lazy but it could well be discomfort. He looks a little lame. Personally I would really up the ground work keeping it slow initially with lots of bending and lateral work. Maybe a few sessions with a massage therapist. If he were a human being I'd be suggesting yoga, pilates or tai chi and a few trips to the osteopath.
Yep. Something is wrong with that horse. At some point it looks as if he is limping, but its hard to tell even for vets sometimes. Of course we don't know if the rider already did that, like blood tests, or x-rays.
Agree. This horse is limping. It is never the horses`fault. If the horse tells you, that for some reason they can`t do something, you bet there is something to be found. Often it is just ill-fitting tack and all the resulting muscular problems. At times maybe harder to find it, even with modern technology. If people researched Sharon May Davis, who does scientific research by dissecting horses, they would think very differently....
Ryan always makes sure its not a physical problem. Also, I'm pretty sure the owner would make sure its not a physical problem before she asks Ryan to come out

Western saddle are different.
Nothing fun about a horse that sits behind the leg. It's a refusal of sorts. I hope she sticks with it.
