More than anything GI Joe exists as a series of reboots and nowhere in it's history is that more illustrated than in the time between GI Joe: A Real American Hero and the first GI Joe live action movie where it seemed like Hasbro was rebooting GI Joe every few years.
One of those reboots was called GI Joe: Sigma 6 and it was an attempt to move away from war as entertainment and go in a more anime direction with a smaller team.
Did GI Joe: Sigma 6 succeed? What do you think...

EW... I'm a Snake Eyes collector. I've always loved the Arashikage Ninja part of GI Joe the most. I have nearly EVERY Snake Eyes figure ( and Storm Shadow ), and after displaying nearly all of them, I gotta say that the aesthetically BEST figure ( not accessories, just the figure ) ever made was the Sigma 6 Snake Eyes that had a helicopter backpack. The helicopter part was absurd, but if you look up "Sigma 6 Snake Eyes V6 Windblade" that figure looked amazing.

      LMFAO!!!! that's hilarious....
I was ehhh late 20's when Sigma 6 was new? I bought a couple figures for old times sake....
I dig the figures actually, for one they can actually hold their weapons and for seconds just more detail lol and they look cool, not that the other versions didn't....
i still have a bunch of the 80's versions though just none of my faves like Dusty and Salvo and Alley Viper, I have an alley viper but it's a repro, not as good, different coor scheme, if you've seen the classified figures look up alley viper from that lineup, that's exactly like the one I had in like 89-90 or so....
I liked Salvo vus he had a shirt with the slogan "the right of might" on it and a quad rocket launcher, and Dusty was cool cus at the time the desert camo was unique plus he had that fabric helmet flap in the back and he was cool in the show lol

Should be noted, but it’s batted around online that Sigma Six was originally going to be something of a continuation of Valor Vs. Venom, based on the plot points of Cobra Commander being imprisoned at the start and General Hawk recovering from something. In fact, I remember reading that parts of Sigma Six heavily drew upon elements of the scrapped Vvs.V follow-up “Robot Rebellion”.

    • @hpred97123
      @hpred97123 Місяць тому +5

If you can find the "First Strike" DVD they explicitly reference the events of Valor Vs. Venom when the Sigma Duke meets Hawk for the very first time. They also make it explicitly clear that outside of Snake-eyes, Jinx, Kamakura, & High-Tech, that the Sigma 6 Joes are not the original members, only members using those codenames.

Man, Marc Thompson really built himself up quite a filmography of 80's icons over the years. He was Cobra Commander in this, Megatron in Transformers Cyberverse, and last but certainly not least, Casey Jones in TMNT 2003. Guy must have a lot of fun in the booth.

Karate Kid did it right! No reboot, no reimagining, no BS. Just continue the story, keep the same tone, be respectful of the source material and the original audience, create new stories that the new audiences can get into. That’s it. That’s the formula.

I actually agree. I think what they should really be doing with G.I. Joe is to set it today with all new characters. The ARAH stuff happened in the 80's, and maybe one of them is the General Hawk of today. You know, have some file card last names that indicate they are someon's kid or whatever. Other than that, all new, and a new enemy tha tis not Cobra. You can always have soem references of course. Use a modern military aesthetic, though with that G.I. Joe flair, and run with that for a while.

      @waltascher Місяць тому +4

@@brianjl7477Yes, that is the biggest problem with the GI Joe franchise.
From the 60s to the 90s, you regularly got new teams and characters that told an ongoing story (whether they meant to or not) about how the GI Joe legacy adapts to the times. But in the 21st century, we just get rehash after rehash after rehash of the 80s characters forced into molds they don’t always fit instead of just telling new stories that fit whatever’s popular at the time.
If they wanted to keep popular characters like Duke and Scarlett around, they should’ve promoted them to leadership positions but let the stories focus on the new characters in the field.

you just need to find the right combo...
sadly renegades worked but we're dealing with a company primarly bent on seling toys so when the show succeeds but the toys fail they kill the show....
when the show fails and the tory fail they kill everything and no lessons are learned
as I've pointed out this is hardly the worst fate we could get, it could be a games IP on the live service route or a dead woke comics series...oh wait, IDW? eesh
it could be a series of really bad shows and movies....oh wait lol
well to be fair on the last one that's not my real intent, sigma & renegades are a decent and great show but I mean it could be handed over to netflix to be wokified which is an option....
I think the fans will work things out in that the true fans won't bother themselves with bad shows....most haven't bothered themselves with the good shows lol
the reason i like Sigma is well I also like anime so the use of that style doesn't bother me...eh

Not to be confused with 6 Sigma, another US / Japan collaboration that the manufacturing industry is undoubtedly familiar with.
While the character designs were good, the lack of success for the figure line was likely due to the deviation from the 3 3/4" standard. The Sigma 6 series turned the anime up a bit too much I think, but they dialed it back just a touch for Resolute - which in my opinion is peak modern GI Joe.

Eh I liked the show but I stopped playing with toys. I was more into Video games by the time I was 14 - 17. The biggest issue is that video games came to take the lunch money of action figures. I collect now as an adult but back then Why play with a Duke when I could basically be Duke in COD? Same with He-man, TMNT and The Thundercats reboot( my brother was still a bit younger and got the toys). I was locked it on a weekly basis but I didn't feel compelled to buy toys. I was also old enough to know the video game tie ins were trash(not my brother so I would always be playing the TMNT games that came out on XBOX with him).
Today's kids also find different things cool. I tried showing my Nephew the 80s TMNT, Transformers , Gi Joe and he goes meh( he did love him some trucks though). The 80s and 90s were a different time in child marketing. Even me as someone born in the 90s look at the aesthetic of 80s figures and say that does not look cool at all(looking at the anatomy of He-man figures specifically)

I love Sigma 6... HEAR ME OUT. If you're falling asleep, or working and you just want positive background noise, the Sigma 6 show is PERFECTION. There's really no space between people yelling stuff. No one talks, everyone is shouting. There's no scenes where it's just lasers and sound effects or music like 80's GI Joe.
It's just good guys on a team, yelling affirmative, positive shit at each other. It can all be summed up as "OH MAN, HERE'S A NEW PROBLEM - TIME TO BUCK UP, MAKE A PLAN AND KICK ASS". It's never a bummer, it's just "positive go-getter" attitude all the time.
And I love it. I treat that show like mood music.
Juxtapose that against "GI Joe Resolute" ( which I also love ), but that movie is going for "harsh, gritty and mean" the whole time. Everyone in the movie has a bad attitude 100% of the time, and the Joes are always being A-holes to each other. Just say'n.

I was not a fan of the scale changes, but I really did like the design of the characters and vehicles. I felt that it was about time Hasbro did something different yet familiar and I felt Sigma 6 did that in spades. I have always loved GI Joe, yet I've always been a huge Sci Fi fan, so the look and feel of Sigma 6 played right into my hands except for the stupid issue of scaling. It frustrated me, yet my wallet was happy.
Despite the scale, I still couldn't help buying a couple of the 8" figures. Sigma 6, IMHO, gave us the coolest versions of both Snake Eyes and Firefly. I had to get those two. The 2.5" scale was more appealing to me for the vehicles. I hated how the figures were mostly static. I did buy some of the vehicles, but mainly after the show had been cancelled, and the toys went on clearance.
With all of this talk about the scale, I believe that is what truly put the nail in the coffin for this reboot. Most toys for kids are purchased or allowed to be purchased by the parents/adults. I believe the scale changes made it alien to the actual people who would purchase the toys. Not being 3-3/4" or even 12" turned everyone off. Parents probably connected more with the Transformers at the time and would convince their kids to get those instead. But that is my theory.
I think the only reason why the current 6" GI Joe are doing somewhat okay is because the figures retain the nostalgia of the 80s and early 90s, but with a modern twist. I can't bring myself to buy them now, because I can't stand the scale and they are too darn expensive.

truth is I think Sigma did okay but the toys never sold....if the toys sold more then the show woulda lasted....
remember, the reason the shows keep getting cancelled is cus this is a toy company trying to sell toys....
but this is a better situation to have cus if it was anything else it's be worse off
games, overmonetized live service like Destiny
comics, DEAD! woke trash, look at IDW? we've been down that road
movies/TV depending on the network stored in the vault, bad movies/shows or another being utterly destroyed [Duke & roadblock are gay for each other for example]
a company wasting their money on new show ideas doesn't really hurt things as much, we still have the 80's?

The trick to good reboots is... good writing. When we saw these franchises as kids that wasn't very important because children are not that discerning, and we were limited to what was on certain channels at certain times. But even by the time of Sigma 6 most Americans had cable to give more options, and now with streaming that's even more true, so we need plots and characters that we can get invested in and will actively seek out. That's one of the reasons almost every time companies try reboots that are more kid-friendly and less serious they fail terribly, and the same goes for reboots that don't grow but just use a gimmick like in space, in the future, in the past, in a computer, etc..

I was at a convention some time ago where, one of the dub voice actors Tom Wayland was talking about how excited he was to be doing voicework for a G. I Joe cartoon, as he was a fan, but was disappointed he had to deliver typical anime dub dialogue for his character, Storm Shadow. I blame this on 4Kids just trying too hard to get another successful franchise like TMNT and Yu-Gi-Oh, since they just lost the rights to Pokemon. Plus, even if it was made for the North American/Western market in mind, there were several Japanese Transformers series by then, and it was the first and only attempt at a Japanese G.I. Joe series. I don't know how popular that franchise was in Japan, but far from the embrace of Transformers. That's for sure. Also, Marc Thompson was the voice of Destro and Cobra Commander for this series. Years later, he'd be the voice of Megatron in Transformers Cyberverse. Strange that he wasn't Starscream.

@@bluebaron6858 I honestly don't know if there was a Japanese version of the show, or at least one that aired. There were 2 other cases of anime companies making new seasons of shows for 4Kids. Sonic X's third season was made in Japanese and all the way back when Hulu was free, they had the original Japanese version of that season alongside the dub, but apparently it did not air on Japanese television. There was also the case of Ultimate Muscle where 4Kids funded the Choujin Olympics arc, as the original series wasn't popular in Japan and ended on a filler arc. Those new episodes did air in Japan, but split off into two seasons and aired years after each other on a death slot. So they did air that one, but it wasn't popular.

Later once I'd 'grown up' and years after I'd finished my Bsc in Product Design I started collecting all the Sigma Six figures and vehicles and I still own them 20 years later! I just love their design in form and function, it's a shame they never did a Baroness or Scarlet etc.. I think I own every version of each SS figure made and quite a few duplicates too. All the OG stuff was sold in the early 90's to fund building a custom BMX.

What made Original Transformers and G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero so great and awesome was the first few releases of the toy and shows we're most grounded in current technology and vehicles with a small amount of possible future tech mixed in.
That is what has been lacking ever since is everyone wants to remove the grounding and turn the future tech up to 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. The funny thing is being creative within a set of limitations tends to creations that seem to last longer. When the limitations are removed then we quickly get the turbo stupid and that rarely lasts for any period of time.

Cool video, guys! S6 had a great toy line, but it wasn't without its flaws. The 8 inch figures were great with all the articulation, accessories, and cloth clothes one could want. The way they were packaged practically screamed "buy me" when they were hanging on the pegs. The two inch companion scale is where a lot of the trouble arose. The figures were lacking in articulation and many were fused to base stands, making them incompatible with the vehicles. Additionally, many of the vehicles were simply retools of the 3 3/4 scale ones from previous lines, so the 2 inch figures tended to rattle around in them like little kids messing around in their parents camper. There were some awesome samples, like the Dragonhawk, but also a lot of failures like the ROCC.
The show was kind of goofy at times, but watchable, and was one of those that actually made Cobra Commander appear as a real threat.
For years, this was my GI Joe fix until Classified brought the Yo Joe magic back into the world. I'll always have a soft spot for S6. Heck, to this day I still use S6 Duke's line : "Note to self- don't try that again!"

Of course they screamed "buy me", they even included a blinking LED in the package that was only there to catch your eye on the shelves!
