    A few years ago we did a "History of X-Men: The Animated Series" video and we definitely touched on the Pryde of the X-Men pilot that failed to make it to series from a few years before but there was more to the story that we thought needed another separate video.
    This is that video.
    We'll cover Margaret Loesch's persistence in getting the X-Men on to TV, why (maybe) Wolverine was Australian and why, in the end, this version of animated X-Men, while influential, did not get picked up for a TV series.

      @@patrickreindel692Modern animation has better graphics obviously because of the more advanced tech, but the modern animations look cheap, childish and ugly. Meanwhile the late 80's-2000's superhero cartoon looked realistic and awsome. Perfect example is the difference in TMNT 2003 and TMNT 2012, or Teen Titans 2003 and Teen Titans GO, or Justice League and JL Action.

      I was only familiar with the X-Men through the Fox Kids animated series before I first heard about and saw Pryde of the X-Men. So naturally, being a young kid at the time, I was admittedly, confused over what I was seeing and hearing. I wasn't overly familiar with the comics so I didn't know who Kitty Pryde or Dazzler were, maybe because I didn't see them on the Fox Kids X-Men series. I always thought that Kitty was ostensibly playing the role that Jubilee would play on the subsequent animated version, i.e. the young and naïve female rookie, who also functioned as an avatar for the audience.

      @@thenightstar8312Not in animation. This was done by Toei who was superior to Korean animation studio AKON, who did the 1992 X-Men TAS
      Toei did the Transformer series, but so did AKON. I'd have to go back and see the differences but I'd imagine it was was less quality than Toei.
      One good way to see how much better Toei was than AKON was to see the Japanese intros to the 1992 X-Men TAS which were exclusively aired in Japan only. Those intros clearly showed the animation superiority and made many people then wish the entire series had been animated by Toei.
      Toei would also often outsource to Sunrise Animation, another Japanese animation studio, but Sunrise got bought by Bandai toy company in the early 99s so perhaps that is why Margaret Loesch and Fox Family didn't use Toei for 1992's X-Men (or perhaps Bandai asked for too much money and AKON was cheaper who knows).

    About the Wolverine accent, in the comics, 1988 was the year when the whole team was moved to the Australian Outback and relied on Gateway to teleport them.

      "Fire-Star Is Born" , aired September 25, 1982, where Iceman and Firestar attend an X-Men reunion featuring Cyclops, Angel, and its latest members Storm and Wolverine (who oddly speaks with an Australian accent).

    I remember watching this pilot on British TV one Sunday, it was my first introduction to the X-Men so by the time The Animated Series started a few years later I was already aware of the characters. I always wanted Colossus and Nightcrawler to be part of the main team in Animated Series.

  • @NegaHumanX
    @NegaHumanX 5 місяців тому +6

    Kitty joining the team is the best introduction to the world that I've seen any show or movie use. That could possibly be because the movies and 90s show used the same method with characters less well oriented to that role.
    Nowadays, I think someone like Surge would be a good character to fill that roll. Especially if the earlier X-teams act as teachers like in her generation of New Mutants books.

    • @strifenineteen

    • @NegaHumanX
      @NegaHumanX 5 місяців тому +2

      @@strifenineteen (Sorry that this response got a bit long.)
      They used Jubilee in that one. I don't feel she fits the role too well though.
      Her powers are way more action oriented and her comic introduction showed her to be more competent at the hero side of things than Kitty was (in the beginning). Kitty was just a regular nerdy teen with a loving family and self image issues. She joins because she heard the X-Men were superheroes and thought Colossus was cute. Jubilee was an idealized 90s runaway who dodged cops, lived in a mall after closing hours, and somehow avoided being killed by civilians despite anti-mutant sentiment getting out of hand. They both had the "kid of the team" role but did it in very different ways.
      They had to drop a lot of what makes Jubilee a cool character in the comics to make her fit Kitty's role. Successfully living under the X-Mens noses and stealing from them without anyone noticing, saving herself from a dog/cyborg/zombie by melting it with her powers, saving Wolverine from crucifixion and living with his feral state until he could regenerate. She was insanely cool but the 90s cartoon version was often seen as the unnecessary kid character. I think they took the wrong elements from Kitty and slapped them onto Jubilee.
      Personally I liked the 90s take on Jubilee as a kid (and as an adult I think she was over-hated despite being a bit annoying), but with how intense the hate for her was and seeing how much cooler she was in the comics makes me think using her was a bit of a misstep.
      All that being said, I do think Surge would do well in the role despite being a lot more like Jubilee than Kitty due to the different age we're in now and her not being the only child on the team. Since people don't need an introduction to what a mutant is or who these characters are, she wouldn't need to bridge that gap as much and could instead facilitate us seeing different sides to them.

I was a big Dazzler fan as I had acquired a lot of comics of her (thanks to my mom), especially during her disco roller skate costume phase. It was nice when her outfit was updated later and great to see it animated in Pryde of The X-Men.
    The 90s X-Men was awesome, but if only it had the animation of this and kept Dazzler instead of having Jubilee.... whoooaa momma what a show it truly could have been!... but I digress. I wish this had been picked up. Long live Pryde of The X-Men! (Another great video Dan!)

    Pat Pinney voiced Wolverine, Australian accent and all? You know, for the longest, I thought it was Neil Ross who voiced him. This revelation is new to me. Everyone who did a voice comparison video thought it was Neil Ross who voiced Wolvie in both Pryde of the X-Men and in the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends episode, A Firestar is Born. I guess they should redo them now, now that this typo was somewhat corrected. Other than that, Pryde of the X-Men didn't do much, but it if wasn't for that, the 90s X-Men cartoon, and Margaret Loesch spearheading it to Fox Kids, never existed. That, and the awesome Konami arcade game along with it. Good review.

    • @RogueBoyScout
      @RogueBoyScout 5 місяців тому +1

      I don't know about other countries, but when TMNT dropped in Australia, It was pretty much the first game that asked for a Dollar a game (or maybe it was 60 cents originally, but after a while they just figured a dollar coin was actually more logical and psychologically seemed like you were spending "less" due to not pumping 20 cent pieces)
      It then laid the groundwork for Street Fighter 2, plus like you said the Konami Trilogy that set a new standard for beat-em-ups (Punisher, Alien vs Predator ect ect) and then yeah..
      It really was a glorious time, an arcade renaissance was taking place. Graduating from 1942/Ghost n Goblins/Rastan ect ect... I actually really liked the pilot and always wondered why it didn't take off.
    I figured it was because almost no one I ever talked to had even seen it.
    It came on randomly, so if you weren't watching cartoons on the right channel, at the specific time, on the exact Saturday it happened to be running, it was easy to miss.
    The quality was good, the overall feeling of it, "felt" like the 80s X-Men I was currently reading about in "X-Men Classic", the animation was great, the theme was pretty cool, even Wolverine being Australian didn't bother me THAT much at the time.
    Even though I liked the 90's X-Men cartoon, there were things that always bugged me.
    The animation style wasn't as slick as the "Pryde" pilot, the way they had the wrong team roster for certain well known story arcs, etc.
    I would really have liked to see what this could have done as a series.

      I think the whole reason why Wolverine was Canadian was because he was inspired by some Canadian hockey player character from an old 70's movie.
      Though there's nothing really charismatic about Canadians compared to the more colorful accent of Australians maybe that's why they decided to give him the accent.
      Also Australians seem to be more based than Canadians who are known for saying sorry a lot 😂
