To all the people saying I should have tried hidden power on Steelix: I did, but it was "not very effective" and did a sliver. I didn't bother running around and testing exactly what type it was, since it had already failed against Steelix and that's the only Pokemon I would have wanted a good hidden power for. Plus, Hidden Power's actual Power in these early games wasn't 60. Often the power of it is much lower than that, so even when it is super effective, it's still often not strong enough to bother using I figured it was so useless that I didn't need to bring it up in the video, but now I have loads of comments saying I forgot about hidden power, so probably should have just shown it anyway. For the record, I do test Hidden Power every once in a while on runs when I'm really stuck, but I've only ever had it work out for me once. You have to get pretty lucky for hidden power to actually pay off, the only time I can think of it working out for us was that Plusle & Minun run On the upside, the comments saying I forgot hidden power are good for the UA-cam Algorithm!
Now everyone's gonna not read the pinned message and just reply with stuff about hidden power The real question is how many of them are doing it because of the joke in the video, and how many are gonna genuinely not read it before they reply?

I completely agree. There is nothing wrong skipping hours of mindless grinding in a pokemon challenge. If the battles to level up very slowly were difficult, sure that's different. Or if he was doing challenges like JRose that are based off in game time. But MDB's challenges aren't like that. No one wants him to spend 10+ hours to go from level 75+ to 100 on wild pokemon. The end result is ultimately the same, and saves him so much time to continue putting out content faster and easier. @Mah-Dry-Bread - Gameplay & Streams! (I hope that tag actually notifies you!)
great run bud! only thing i would suggest would be to always get hidden power, while often its not the most useful move, it could give you a hidden power type that you could of used e.g hidden power fire for the steelix :D
I predict the Mawile run is going to be a lot of fun. It actually has a lot going for it: Steel-type, surprisingly varied movepool, starts with non-Normal attacking moves (great for Roxanne, though Astonish will prove problematic against Normal users), excellent abilities in Hyper Cutter and Intimidate, and even has a cool design. There's a reason it's my favorite Pokémon. Sure, its stats aren't great and it gets no STAB moves in Gen 3, but you've done well with worse, so that may not necessarily mean much.
Next time you expect to need to use physical attacks in a Gen 2 run, you may want to consider resetting until your pokemon is male (unless the pokemon is always female). Because the pokemon's gender is based on the attack DV, and the lower DVs are assigned to female pokemon, a pokemon with a 50:50 ratio like Mareep is guaranteed to have an attack DV less than 8.
I am so happy. I thought the emerald would be the best I would get. But Mah-Dry-Bread, you sir, thank you for taking my suggestion. Looking forward to an awesome video!

Gen 1 and 2 have the better (well, simpler) version of EV grinding. In Gens 1 and 2 you get stat experience which is taken from the base stats of everything you kill and used to calculate the extra stat points.
By the point where rare candies are necessary, EVs will be maxed out. Hell, even if you use them in a mid game grind, you'll continue obtaining them until they are maxed out. In the long run using rare candies early lowers the maximum potential of stats at level 100.
@@saigesmart4167 You might be surprised. Iirc the one flaw of the Stat Exp System was the amount of Stat Exp required to max out. Every extra stat point requires more stat exp tham the one before it, I think.

On the Rare Candy cheats thing, it's worth noting that a Pokémon that is leveled up with Rare Candies will be weaker than a Pokémon that was trained by battling, especially in Gens 1 and 2. The reason is simple -- you don't get Stat Experience (or EV's if we're talking Gen 3 and later) from Rare Candies, and those factor into your stats. For many challenges, this probably wouldn't matter much; at most, you'd just end up at a higher level than you would have if you ground the normal way. For some of the hardest challenges, though, you could end up at a point where the missed Stat Experience/EV's would come back to bite you.
I remember playing this few years ago in the Crystal version and yes, that fight versus Steelix is brutal. I think I ended up using Swagger to get through it... High risk high reward. Also, Thunder + Rain Dance is not something you want to sleep on. It really makes a lot of battles more consistent! Anyway, nice video! :)
13:30 actually, Id love to see that. If you ever recorded your grind sessions I would absolutely watch them lol! I absolutely adore your content and I love binging series or longer videos for bg noise as I work also, if you need to use rare candies to avoid long late game grinds, absolutely go for it. you often get most evs on the pokemon by idk.. mid game anyways, so anything to help you is fantastic
I love the outro talks! Honestly, i think its better than reading straight from the script and cutting it there. It's more fun for all of us. Hope you weren't trying to keep it a secret tho, cause i just ruined that! 🤣
I enjoyed hearing more about what happened outside of just the gyms and rival fights and such. Knowing how your trip itself around the world may vary slightly as your goals differ is nice, I want more of that. Also the joking about random trainers is a nice break from the usual too.
I thought it would have been a bit easier starting at Goldenrod when you could pick up the elemental punches. But then I remembered only Flaafy and Ampharos could learn those.
I think using Double Team in the Steelix fight would have been fine since Iron Tail already has a low accuracy, so it would lean more towards strategy than luck.
He talked about it being unmissable for poison type pokemon because it is Koga's Muk who used it. Yet it takes until Gen5 for that to be true. But you're right, toxic is 90% accurate today for every other type. But did you know it was 85% till Gen 5? Mawile in Gen3 looks to be a fun run :)
You're doing a great job, i enjoy your videos. It's calming to watch them for me. However, a challenge suggestion: how about a Vulpix run in a gen of your choice? I think you can do quite a lot with that one, so it should'nt be to brutal, at least later in the run
@@xstrikefiredragon maybe, but you can do quite a lot shenanningans gen 4 upwards. Because of ghost being physical back then, several attacks don't work well back then. Gen 5 because you can work a lot with the move sets
I remember watching Pokemon run videos religiously a few years back but got put off yours for some reason. I could never remember why but then Youngster Joey called and reminded me, nice chap.
Man that Fallout Comment. Reminded me that I'd love to see Fallout 2. I watched Fallout 1 well after you put it up (you actually hearted a comment I left, the one about Brotherhood combat armor and you saying you didn't know about the brotherhood if you recall). I know it's a case of when you have time.
Honestly, one run that could be interesting is Chinchou. It has a weird typing and some strange moves. While any game will be cool, I think that HGSS would be an awesome choice since it could be your first challenge in that game.
I will suggest that when you have a brick wall fight like Steelix in this run, always go and see what you can do with Hidden Power. You may get lucky and get something like Hidden Power Water, or even just something that Steelix isn't resistant to.
Mareep is one of my favorite Pokemon because it is so damn adorable. In fact, that whole line is one of my favorites. Just wish my Mareep was better in battle. Maybe have some easier runs to have the 4 videos a month quota be easier to obtain.
I know this is real late, but as someone that did a Mawile run in Emerald, I have to say that it was the most satisfying Pokemon run I've ever done! It's able to learn Flamethrower and Ice Beam, so it can do well, provided you gamble. I was able to beat Steven after he decided to get real crazy and wonky with switching his team around. Looking forward to it!
MAREEP! I am a simple man. I see Amphy or its family, and I am happy. Also, I am unsure, cause Bulbapedia and Serebii say different things, but was Fire Punch not an option? That is in Goldenrod. I know Flaafy can learn it, but Serebii lists it as possible for Mareep to learn too. Just figured I'd ask.
Maybe you should get a sit stand desk. You can change the height of the desk several times during the day and keep the workflow with brakes from sitting. Its advised to get an electrical one, changing manually is tiresome
Strange this challenge is. Coming out. And I just got done watching Ace Trainer Liam's video WTF moments in the pokemon anime witch happens to be featuring Mareep. Thank you MDB for the content hope you're having a fantastic day.
Really Great Video again! Have you ever thought about using a „Try-Counter“ for the important fights? Would really Love it to see how many trys you sometimes need till everything works:) Anyway keep it up!
I've been anticipating this run for years, since the start of these challenges! Yahoo! I hope you take the... Wait, did this game even have fossils?? I dont remember!
I love Mareep, my favorite in Gen 2! The poor little electric sheep struggled as expected, but is victorious :) I'm here to celebrate this accomplishment and support the UA-cam algorithm.
My suggestion is Pokemon Red/Blue with only Krabby. The caveat is ONLY Krabby. No HM slaves and you can't catch or receive any other Pokemon. Meaning the only Pokemon you ever own is Krabby. He can learn Strength, Cut, and Surf so it's doable.
I love Mareep but I must admit they aren't that strong... that being said I'm glad you could win with it in the end. As for a suggestion I'm sticking with Pokemon Gold/Silver with a Murkrow
Have you considered doing these challenges with a bit of spice? For instance; Pokemon Platinum Randomizer, with only a Bagon. (No idea if you've used a bagon before, but yeah.) A randomizer to mix it up, randomize all other pokemon in the game, but keep that one starter. :)
How about for long grinds, you can use a rare candy every, say, 20 mind of grinding? Also, I know what it's like to be stubborn. It's why I walked the 30+ mins from the train station with a suitcase, guitar case, rucksack, and laptop bag instead of getting a bus or taxi. Or why I carried 2 sets of plastic drawers for over an hour to get them home after buying them.
Don't forget to look into hidden power! If your mareep had say HP water it may have made Steelix a lot easier. The random extra bit of coverage could be exactly what you need.
Do a run where the only move you can use is “Assist”, your allowed to catch and have as many Pokémon as you want in your party and they can have any move set you want, but the only move you can use is “Assist” preferably on one pokemon, you can pick the gen but I’d suggest gen 5 using a purloin/liepard as white was my first Pokémon game
Yo! This run is what I've been waiting for! My favorite line is definitely Mareep's! Ampharos is my favorite Pokémon overall, but Flaaffy and Mareep are both top tier designs
Anytime I did a playthrough of Silver I always had a mareep! I really like the design of this evolution line and I felt like Ampharos was an awesome electric type.
The Nancy Drew let's play is one of the best things ever. It's a shame you never titled one of the episodes some variation of Scooby Doo, because that'd be hilarious.

I think I ended up using Swagger to get through it... High risk high reward.
Also, Thunder + Rain Dance is not something you want to sleep on. It really makes a lot of battles more consistent!
Anyway, nice video! :)
I love that Youngster Joey’s making a comeback
The youngster Joey gag is my favorite in the whole series. That’s what made me subscribe in the first place
13:30 actually, Id love to see that. If you ever recorded your grind sessions I would absolutely watch them lol!
I absolutely adore your content and I love binging series or longer videos for bg noise as I work
also, if you need to use rare candies to avoid long late game grinds, absolutely go for it. you often get most evs on the pokemon by idk.. mid game anyways, so anything to help you is fantastic
I love the outro talks! Honestly, i think its better than reading straight from the script and cutting it there. It's more fun for all of us.
Hope you weren't trying to keep it a secret tho, cause i just ruined that! 🤣
I'd honestly forgotten how much I love the youngster Joey gag and how much I missed it.
23:15-Yes. Alakazam’s base speed is 120 compared to Arcanine’s 95.
Lol I saw you battle Youngster Joey and grab his number, and I KNEW we were in for a treat~. 😆
Serebii says Mareep can get Fire Punch o.o
I think using Double Team in the Steelix fight would have been fine since Iron Tail already has a low accuracy, so it would lean more towards strategy than luck.
That “Hey Kevin, how’s it going” gave me serious Cm Punk vibs from the sit down on Raw years ago!
1. You COULD use Hidden Power TM from the Lake of Rage maze-house.
2. You could Also grab a Magnet from weekday siblings on Sunday from route 37.
Fun fact, toxic to this day only has 90 accuracy. Also good luck with mawhile in gen 3. No stab steel moves, and most of its moves are special.
Vulpix would be cool. I wonder if gen 1 or 2 would be more interesting?
@@xstrikefiredragon maybe, but you can do quite a lot shenanningans gen 4 upwards. Because of ghost being physical back then, several attacks don't work well back then.
Gen 5 because you can work a lot with the move sets
Steelix really did beep that sheep just as hard as I thought he would.
I still want Pokemon Platinum with one Craniados/fossil Pokemon.
I’m for sure rewatching the Nancy Drew let’s play! Thanks for reminding me MDB! I love that series!
I agree on the grind/rare candy discussion. Once you beat the game sure, but you say at the beginning without glitches or exploits.
Honestly, one run that could be interesting is Chinchou. It has a weird typing and some strange moves. While any game will be cool, I think that HGSS would be an awesome choice since it could be your first challenge in that game.
I loved the shoutout to Kevin
I will suggest that when you have a brick wall fight like Steelix in this run, always go and see what you can do with Hidden Power. You may get lucky and get something like Hidden Power Water, or even just something that Steelix isn't resistant to.
I enjoy all of the runs, but the ad lib part at the end is the best.
26:21 suggestions like this must be immortalized and returned to with frequency.
Mareep is one of my favorite Pokemon because it is so damn adorable. In fact, that whole line is one of my favorites. Just wish my Mareep was better in battle.
Maybe have some easier runs to have the 4 videos a month quota be easier to obtain.
I thought you were going to get a pink bow to help out your normal moves also so it would look like a real sheep in the anime lol 🤟🏽🤙🏽
18:18 - learning venomoth isn't flying type.
"Why are we still here, just to suffer..."
Personally, I love the ad-libby outro things. They're a very pleasant change of pace & tone after the well scripted episode.
Huh, I don't know. I just checked bulbapedia so I didn't know it might be an option
The ceiling sheep!
...man that is an _obscure_ reference...
Requesting Pokemon B2W2 with Only One Chinchou.
Really Great Video again!
Have you ever thought about using a „Try-Counter“ for the important fights?
Would really Love it to see how many trys you sometimes need till everything works:)
Anyway keep it up!
We gonna see a Slugma Gen3 run soon? You could do Gen2 but Gen3 would be so much harder due to all the water types.
I've been anticipating this run for years, since the start of these challenges! Yahoo! I hope you take the... Wait, did this game even have fossils?? I dont remember!
I love Mareep, my favorite in Gen 2! The poor little electric sheep struggled as expected, but is victorious :)
I'm here to celebrate this accomplishment and support the UA-cam algorithm.
(No idea if you've used a bagon before, but yeah.)
A randomizer to mix it up, randomize all other pokemon in the game, but keep that one starter. :)
I actually watch the videos all the way to the end. I enjoy your outro commentary.
Yes, so hyped for this one! The Mareep line are my favorite Pokémon!
"naming her rosa cause she's bringing the thunder" that reference is perfect :D
I loved playing with Mareep as a kid, Ampharos was one of my aces towards the end
I actually just rewatched your Nancy Drew play through recently. If you ever manage to play through another Nancy Drew game, I will be there.
"Pokemon Champion Hiker" actually made me LOL. It was unexpected that early on in the video, but I enjoyed it.
Been so excited for this, mareep is probably one of my top 3 favorite Pokémon
Production and story telling have been huge W’s. Keep it up!
I also like the "fun part"(and the youngster Joey gag lol)
I can’t wait for the Mawile run honestly it’s my favorite Pokémon I use one in everything I play that has it
Do a run where the only move you can use is “Assist”, your allowed to catch and have as many Pokémon as you want in your party and they can have any move set you want, but the only move you can use is “Assist” preferably on one pokemon, you can pick the gen but I’d suggest gen 5 using a purloin/liepard as white was my first Pokémon game
Yo! This run is what I've been waiting for! My favorite line is definitely Mareep's! Ampharos is my favorite Pokémon overall, but Flaaffy and Mareep are both top tier designs
Man I can't wait for your videos to come out. They help me relax during the day.
Great run! And I like the ramblimg casual fun talk at the end, I stay till the video stop xD
This man hit 2 50% thunders to win. Respect.
29:49 me not bored af, sipping on that good ol' post challenge run MDB tea. Sometimes it really is "screw the algorithm"
