Hey MDB, Just wanted to say i'm really glad you're still keeping up the challenges. I've been a little burnt out on challenge videos myself but seeing this makes me want to jump back in and start making videos again, thank you!
Oh I remember seeing your videos a while back, glad to see you may be coming back
Yes me too
Yo same!!!
Take the videos at your own pace, if you’re burnt out take the time you need, we will all be here happy for the day you return! In the mean time have a good day Plonk!

Deleting leech seed was a big mistake. It is often overlooked because it is learned early, but it is extremely powerful especially combined with sleep. It is surely more effective than either make a drain or solar beam in most instances Especially with such weak attacking stats and how many opponents resist grass in those games
don't forget the fact that leechseed only needs on PP per pokemon and deals % damage so the higher leveled your opponents, the more you heal. with 150 hp at lvl 66 leech seed is way to good in the endgame
I KNOW!!! I was thinking the exact same thing!!! Why did he delete leech seed?
@@thomascunningham7164 mega drain does more damage, and he thought he would regret losing any other move. Leech seed is still better overall though. He could have gotten rid of return, and just get the tm again later.
@@jamtone4492 or get rid of synthesis since he barely used it anywaysx and it has nuch less pp
@@thomascunningham7164 😊😊
You often compare pokemon to first form starters, so let's see if using one is easier. Platinum with only a Turtwig! As we learned from the Gible run, Ice type moves appear way more than you'd think. Although it doesn’t have the double weakness like Gible, it also comes with more resistances.
Grass has many more weaknesses than ground dragon types.
My first reaction to you saying “it doesn’t have a 4x weakness to ice” was “YES IT DOES!”
. . .
Then my brain started working again and remembered _TORTERRA_ is 4x weak to ice, not Turtwig 😂
"I'll hack in some rare candies to save time since it won't affect the actual strategy."
Finally! He's cutting corners no one should complain about.
you know someone will, lol. Definitely happy about him using candies.
@@jamtone4492 Sadly yeah; there's always going to be that person.
I like how Hoppip's whole strategy in this run reflects Jumpluff's competitive strategy: basically, avoid getting hit at all costs. The only difference is that Jumpluff achieves this through Substitute + Leech Seed.
Didn't Jumpluff also use to run sleep powder competitively? At least I'm pretty sure she did in gen 4... It was like, full investment in HP and either speed or defense, with Sleep powder, leech seed, substitute, and... Encore I think? I might be mixing her up with another pokemon though...
For anyone who doesn't know, gen 2 has DVs which are the equivalent of IVs in later gens but in gen 2 female pokemon always have lower attack DVs, so MDB was playing this challenge at a disadvantage
I always forget about that
@@MahDryBread I did to, I only noticed it when I saw it's attack was lower than it's sp at when they should be the same
The exceptions are female-only Pokemon like Miltank, Chansey, etc. I see this happen in other people's runs and I see them miss KO's that they wouldn't have missed if they weren't handicapping themselves.
@@TheForeverRanger I did not know that
@@TheForeverRanger And actually it depends in the male female ratio, that's why female starters have very low attack dv, I belive it can only be 1 or 0
Which Fossil did you take?
I know there aren't any in Gold but I thought I could ask anyway.^^
Of course! They're good for the YT algorithm 🤣
Well, the one place he could conceivably get a fossil, or choice of fossils, in Gen II would be Kantou, in Mt. Moon, so I'd say in that event he would've picked- ... ... Uh... O-Ooh, wait, I know this one... Uhh... Oh! Right! The Dome Fossil!
Hey MDB, thanks for taking our feedback about grinding into consideration! You seem to be enjoying the relief of rare candies, and I hope that everyone else is too
Hey MDB.
Just FYI you should have gone for headbutt against Whitney. That would allow you to keep leech seed for Morty. Then after the ghost gym you could have taught return.
Also you could have run out of PP on unnecessary moves and then used struggle to finish off the last pokemon.
That or just get another Return TM the next week. The timer wouldn't count that, right ? (In Gen2 she can give as many as you want)
I was wondering why he skipped that.
I would have forgotten synthesis for mega drain instead of leech seed. Thanks for another great video.
This, SP + Synthesis could have done that fight earlier. Hindsight's 20/20 I guess
Big facts. Leech Seed + Sleep Powder would have saved him so much time.
Totally agree. He never shoulda got rid of Leech Seed!!
Just wanted to comment and say I'm a big fan of the compromise you came up with on rare candies. Good stuff.
I did a crystal playthough earlier this year, where my goal was to be significantly lower level than most major battles. my ace ended up being my jumpluff!! I ended up running sleep powder, leech seed, synthesis, and giga drain (return ended up on another member of the team). most of the major battles relied very heavily on the sleep luck, but it was a very memorable playthrough. was able to beat Red with my team all being under level 55! great run as always, I loved seeing how you tackled the moveset!
It would be nice if you showed the overworld for a second before fighting the main battles. When you jump straight into the gym leader battles without showing the gym it's hard to keep track of what's going on
Flash would have been a good move for that 4th slot, since you could reduce their accuracy and make it less likely to get hit during the non-sleep turns
Only problem is, Flash still sucked this generation. Ironically, once it lost HM status, it immediately became a better move; its accuracy was 100% in Gen 4 (I used it on my Espeon in SoulSilver).
@@CyberchaoX didnt Defog go through a similar change? used to just increase accuracy? then it removed entry hazards?
i dont play competitive so know next to nothing lol
You were so enthralled with the grind that you forgot about your old rival Joey and his top percent Rattata
Ok, so like, I love these challenges weekly. That being said, with these types of challenges, it's not a nuzlocke. Shouldn't we agree using rare candies at the start is better for everyone? It's just a grind for grinds sake. It's not like finding metapod is challenging, it's just time consuming, and slows progression ok challenges. I know it's a slippery slope when it comes to candy rules, but these are silly for non attacking pokemon in the early grind.
I was going to suggest something similar. I was thinking he should allow gamesharking full restores for struggle grind runs. Both get the job done but with different EVs
@@terrinater I think just rare candy'ing until he gets a basic attacking move is good enough. Whether it's tackle, or even leech seed. Something that does direct damage.
leech seed would've been fine against steelix, I think. But you might have been able to take out haunter earlier if you had strategically lost pp and used struggle strats.
I was shocked that he got rid of Leech Seed, it's a god-tier move that stays relevant all the way up to the endgame.
Love the voice over of "Should have sleep powder by then" while the footage plays of hitting Lv17 and getting it.
Especially with recent events, anything that keeps you making videos is cool with me.
21:44 - actually he has 4 that double resist grass 😜
I remember back in 2008 or whatever, a youtuber called Datai did a Hoppip only run in Crystal - he used items in battle iirc but its meant that Hoppip's always held a special place in my heart
...Despite its so-so stats and moves :P
Lance: As the most powerful trainer and as the Pokémon League Champion… I, Lance the dragon master, accept your challenge!
ScotYTHoty: ゴゴゴゴゴゴ
27:45 - lance only has 1 Full Restore, and he only uses it on his lvl 50 Dragonite
Maybe for a less complicated challenge: I sometime somewhat like a Type-Link challenge especially when playing new game. My rule is pretty simple every pokemon has to have one other pokemon on your team that shares the same type. But no type should be represented more than 2 times. You can also increase difficulty by linking the death with the types.
It's quite funny because sometime you struggle with bad pokemon and really bad type match-up (i.e: in my last playthrough in diamond I had 4 pokemons for the Ice-Arena, all of them having an ice weakness) but you also get to play a lot of new pokemon.
>has the best possible moves proven by how Whitney was trivial
>immediately deletes them for Morty and gets stuck
lmao
MDB, I've watched pretty much all of your pokemon challenges. You tend to play the generations I am familiar with and I like your narrating style. I know they are a hard grind for some of them but for me these are the most entertaining videos on your channel. Keep it up!
100% okay with rare candies. You deserve to not sit for hours and hours and grind.
See THESE things need regional variants, stat boost and mega evolutions WAY more than charizard ever needed them.
Commenting before watching the whole video. I recently did a replay of Gold and had a Hoppip on my team. Moveset against the Elite 4 was Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, Flash, and Solar Beam. It wrecked Lance's big scary Dragonite. Once I got to Kanto I switched Flash for Double Team.

Everyone else: *_Shocked Pikachu Face_*
Thank you for the video. I'd like a Blastoise, Octillery, and Golem run. Please feel free to use rare candies, iron, or whatever else would help ease the strain of these runs, so long as it's not hacking in illegal moves or the like. Just as long as it's convenience stuff that could be acquired by grinding anyway, there's really no need to worry about it. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I want to make sure that you know that there are people who wouldn't have a problem with it.
1st form bugs in Fire Red? Neat!!! Can't wait!
Sidenote: Great Whitney strat, my usual go-to is Togepi with a Sweet Kiss/Attract Combo. Though this is on Heart Gold.
Oh that's good. I typically use Gastly/Haunter with Curse, though that's Gen 2. I know Gen 4 Miltank has Scrappy. It's like the devs read all the comments about how evil the original Miltank was and said, "Yass but how can we makes it truuuuly evil" while clicking their talons together.
If you kept Leech Seed instead of Synthesis you would have quite easily beaten the ghost gym without candies at a much lower level. Seed is just insane, especially on such a bad mon
Hey MDB great challenge and as someone who left a commented against rare candys at first i am super happy with the compromise you found! It´s a great solution :)
love these videos. I 100% agree with the people that say to use rare candies to help you save time and sanity. I know some nuzlockers are starting to adopt that as well so you dont get ruined by RNG while grinding. But I do like the comprimise you made as well.
Great on the Rare candy compromise very close to my suggestion!
Emerald with a team of only Sharpedo nicknamed Shark, and using only Surf (hacked into Littleroot Town to get it immediately). Save it for a SurfShark plug, it'll be hilarious.
Regarding Morty, couldn't you have strung out your Return PP so that you can fall back onto Struggle once Mega Drain is tapped out? This isn't Gen 1, so it'd have worked.
Xatu using ‘confusion ray’, I love those small mistakes in the script, had to listen to it twice to realise you really said that haha
I love your content MDB. Can’t wait to see the next challenge. Also I still offer that Gen 4 only fire types. It could be challenging since there is only a few fire types in the game. :)
I am really surprised that Hoppip could beat Red without Leech Seed, that is astounding :D
I do not know if this has been done yet or if it would be of any interest, but what about a: Gen 2 run with no pokemon restrictions but only struggle can be used? Gen 2's struggle seems to be particularly usable but also punishing. I'm sure there could be a lot of theory crafting around which pokemon to use and teaching them all low pp moves to save time. Just an Idea!
We love living a normal human being life! Great video, surprising end!
Doesn't Hoppip look like a piggy bank with green dollars coming out of its head?
You should do first form grass type nuzlocke
Since you seem trouble with those pokemon
The rare candies move is smart. All for it! Videos on time and you aren't burning yourself out is a great combo 😊
No way you beat red with Hoppip. That's insane! To think i use to struggle with a team of strong pokemon 😭
This makes me really curious as to what Jumpluff would be like. Like how much would that evolution change things?
The time save would be tremendous considering Jumpluff starts with tackle.
Ooh, an early video! Considering I'm working tomorrow during the normal premiere time, I'll happily watch this with dessert tea!
Grass Types in the Ghost gym: Haha, I'm in danger!
“I think I should have Sleep Powder by then.”
_He says as he hits Lvl 17 where Hoppip learns Sleep Powder._
I’m guessing the script came before the footage or MDB wasn’t watching the footage when he wrote the script
Honestly, I’m halfway through the video at the Morty fight brick wall and I think you should’ve kept leach seed as a move over Synthesis. You’ve done solo runs with no items before, and cutting out any move for 5 super potions isn’t a good trade in my eyes, but I guess that’s a part of the challenge
I have a suggestion. Why not try using struggle for some of your brick wall fights against ghosts and such? Since it's typeless it can be used against any brick wall, and you could even use some strategy such as go into the Morty fight with limited PP in your moves to make your way to the last haunter and use struggle. Just a thought!
This beginning grind reminds me of Pikasprey's soft lock picking series, that is real gnarly
Huge shout out to MDB for keeping on keeping on! We understand it's tough to be uploading challenge vids considering the time it takes, but we hope you know that we all appreciate it very much and your vids mean the world to us!
26:50 "On the very next try..."
*Somehow gained 6 levels.*
If you don't want to use rare candy, you can always use a experience multiplier cheat code. Specially while using a pokemon that grows slowly.
I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but you can get Return more than once. Should have replaced that for the fight with Morty and retaught it later.
Also, sleep and leech seed can be a powerful combo. Should've kept it for sure.
Pokémon Champion Russel!! Love that guy. Such a good chap
All that sunny day sure brightened up my day. Thank you ScotYTHoty!
*_"HOPPIP?!"_*
Requesting Pokemon B2W2 With Only One Chinchou.
Hoppip is such a happy and cute pokemon, but it's more like a mascot than an accual team member
(2:35) Yeah, that's annoying, especially if you rename a Porygon2 and then want to name it back. I wonder why they didn't include numbers in the name entry back then?
(5:17) Wow, what a clutch win there!
(5:47) Yes, Flying resists Bug, so Hoppip takes neutral damage from Bug moves.
(9:51) It would be annoying, but you could get rid of Return, because that's reobtainable every Sunday. Obviously, the problem is that you'd have to wait a week to get another.
(19:25) Grass resists Electric, so Hoppip is actually neutral vs. Electric attacks.
(22:12) If paralysis is a potential problem, you could try equipping a Paralyze Cure Berry (or Cheri Berry in later games).
(32:32) And that's game!
How about a run where you use Starmie, but you're not allowed to use Water or Psychic moves to attack with in battle. No Same-Type Attack Bonus for you!
I think Lance actually has 4 Pokémon who double resist Solarbeam (you claimed 3) but his 3 Dragonites and Charizard.
Glad to see you finally started using rare candies. Save your stress, eat candy, be happy.
Sometimes I don’t know how you keep up with these, I’m not sure I could have made it through that horrendous early grind against metapod
MTB: Need to find several Metapod to grind just one early level.
Me: Why not just use splash until Metapod runs low on hardens, then start using tail whip, to lower defense, and synthesis, to heal, so that Metapod eventually knocks itself out? You'd get more exp in less time and would still be able to do the struggle strat at the end.
MTB:... So much time wasteeeeddddd!
Lance has 4 Pokémon that double resist Solar Beam. Three Dragonites and a Charizard.
Ah Yes, hoppip the Magikarp of the land.
I really hope that the Stat Experience clause becomes a permanent facet of your rules. You deserve it. Like you said, its just as legit as wasting all that time.
Nice run. I'm happy that you have a mother you can enjoy video games with. Mine has always been super jugdmental and would never join.
Would be great to see those 100 level pokemon evolving. See how strong they would have been if they had the chance.
Love from Brazil! Found your channel last mounth and have been watching your videos since then...even playing skyrim again!
Leech Seed is the GOAT move. I think that plus poison powder would have worked.
Oh sweet! ❤️ Love your Pokemon content!
I'm just imagining a little Hoppip using a huge Solarbeam while the sun shines, withe opponent sleeping . 💥😄
Here’s a challenge idea, Pokémon Black with only Foongus?
For the Morty fight did you consider using up all of the PP from Return and Synthesis, and most of the PP from Sleep Powder so that after you could use Struggle once you ran out of Mega Drains? I'm almost positive Struggle hits Ghosts in gen2
i think it was gen 2 that made the change, used to be a normal type move, then it became typeless.
the rare candy cheats definitely were a good idea--i'd say you should do it like that from now on
Fire Red with only first form bug Pokemon doesn't seem too bad, Scyther and Pinsir are quite good, but until you get them I bet it's gonna be brutal with Caterpie and Weedle, gotta hope for the poison probably
Love the video. I'm currently doing Hoppip only in Soul Silver. Awful start. Wish me luck completing the challenge!
MDB: I named him 'Scotty 2 Hotty'
Hoppip: is named Scoty Thoty
MDB youve taken a mon that doesn't learn an attacking move up so often with just struggle I think you should allow yourself to switch train them going forward. It takes absolutely nothing from the challenge other than saving you time and can help save you sanity going forward. Or if the mom can be caught in an early route prior to the gym just grab it there where it should already know an attacking move. Whatever helps ease that early bit
Okay so in one of your "pokemon mystery dungeon: blue rescue team" Videos you asked if there even where pokemon based off of weapons

Watching this muted with captions. So far, I've gotten that Gastly's *legs* hardly do any damage. Will update you with anything else especially weird.
Grinding outside of Mahogany is doing an "all-rate job".
Jasmine's "Still x" kept waking up, but Clair's "Kendra" went pretty well.
I'm here for using rare candies to mitigate the grind. Especially if you've likely maxed out your EVs already.
im glad you decided to use rare candies
another great vid, and hoppips grin reminds me of the sprout moles from omori.
My sleep sucks if I don't have a video and a fan. However when a MahDryBread video is out I get a good fucking sleep..
These videos are the ones I look forward to every week, always love them.
Ah yes Hoppip, the most obvious way to purify Shadow Lugia that I never noticed.
What a guy, Mario Party with your Mum what a legend! :)
These are always so well formatted
Vileploom and houndoom in the style of detective Pikachu. Would watch!
I know some people might mind this approach, but if you're grinding against wild pokemon (and arent really in risk to lose against them, and even then its not a nuzelock, so idk if that makes a difference) I'd say just use pkhex to increase the level including stat experience. it'll save a lot of time, so just calculate both the exp. for wild pokemon (so you'd get the same amount of grinding in, but only with the amount of time it takes to calc the amount of grinding and stat xp you'd do instead of actually doing it)
like I said, I'm sure people will oppose this, but really it just does everything you'd do on your own and saves a ton of time. since you'll have to fight anything thats on the route to calc the stats and xp you'd receive (unless you look it up online.. ig?) its just doing what you'd do anyways but saves tons of time. I'm repeating myself, but you get the idea, I'm sure xD
Im totally fine with the Rare Camdy use, but could you have had access to a PP Up? That would have given you a couple more mega drains.
You should do a challenge where you only use Pokémon you hate the most or Pokémon you really love the most that would be a really fun video to see of you using a team of six Pokémon that you either hate or like
I'm all for you using Rare Candies to cut out grinding. I'm glad to see you not subjecting yourself to hours of that nonsense.
An d, yeah, getting rid of Leech Seed was a big mistake. It's one of the best moves Grass types had in the old games. Synthesis sucks. It only has 5 PP and doesn't even restore that much health even under optimal conditons
Sorry about your medical troubles man. Hope this helps in a small way
Honestly, I'd be fine with rare candies from the start. You can sell them to get vitamins so you're not losing out on EV/DVs, too. It's all grinding to get those up anyway, and this cuts out the grind while saving time and getting more quality vids out like this one.
Ice punch is a physical move meaning if you take damage from a physical move, depending on your defence and health aka hp is depending on your survival of ice punch
