Deleting leech seed was a big mistake. It is often overlooked because it is learned early, but it is extremely powerful especially combined with sleep. It is surely more effective than either make a drain or solar beam in most instances Especially with such weak attacking stats and how many opponents resist grass in those games
don't forget the fact that leechseed only needs on PP per pokemon and deals % damage so the higher leveled your opponents, the more you heal. with 150 hp at lvl 66 leech seed is way to good in the endgame
@@thomascunningham7164 mega drain does more damage, and he thought he would regret losing any other move. Leech seed is still better overall though. He could have gotten rid of return, and just get the tm again later.
You often compare pokemon to first form starters, so let's see if using one is easier. Platinum with only a Turtwig! As we learned from the Gible run, Ice type moves appear way more than you'd think. Although it doesn’t have the double weakness like Gible, it also comes with more resistances. Grass has many more weaknesses than ground dragon types.
My first reaction to you saying “it doesn’t have a 4x weakness to ice” was “YES IT DOES!” . . . Then my brain started working again and remembered _TORTERRA_ is 4x weak to ice, not Turtwig 😂
I like how Hoppip's whole strategy in this run reflects Jumpluff's competitive strategy: basically, avoid getting hit at all costs. The only difference is that Jumpluff achieves this through Substitute + Leech Seed.
Didn't Jumpluff also use to run sleep powder competitively? At least I'm pretty sure she did in gen 4... It was like, full investment in HP and either speed or defense, with Sleep powder, leech seed, substitute, and... Encore I think? I might be mixing her up with another pokemon though...
I like this balance of grinding and Rare Candies! Shows the effort needed at the beginning particularly and then when you are just straight up wasting time after EVs are maxed, start using them!
I'm totally in with the rare candy thing, as you said it doesn't affect the experience at all and it saves you time, not only to have the videos early but also to give you some time to relax :)
Hey MDB, thanks for taking our feedback about grinding into consideration! You seem to be enjoying the relief of rare candies, and I hope that everyone else is too
Hey MDB. Just FYI you should have gone for headbutt against Whitney. That would allow you to keep leech seed for Morty. Then after the ghost gym you could have taught return. Also you could have run out of PP on unnecessary moves and then used struggle to finish off the last pokemon.
Well, the one place he could conceivably get a fossil, or choice of fossils, in Gen II would be Kantou, in Mt. Moon, so I'd say in that event he would've picked- ... ... Uh... O-Ooh, wait, I know this one... Uhh... Oh! Right! The Dome Fossil!
I did a crystal playthough earlier this year, where my goal was to be significantly lower level than most major battles. my ace ended up being my jumpluff!! I ended up running sleep powder, leech seed, synthesis, and giga drain (return ended up on another member of the team). most of the major battles relied very heavily on the sleep luck, but it was a very memorable playthrough. was able to beat Red with my team all being under level 55! great run as always, I loved seeing how you tackled the moveset!
It would be nice if you showed the overworld for a second before fighting the main battles. When you jump straight into the gym leader battles without showing the gym it's hard to keep track of what's going on
I agree with the stat experience/EV rare candy idea, it makes it so videos come out faster and are overall less stressful, maybe 1/2 a work day to grind in the future. Also love your videos, I am too busy to watch premieres but I always get to them soon after.
Flash would have been a good move for that 4th slot, since you could reduce their accuracy and make it less likely to get hit during the non-sleep turns
Only problem is, Flash still sucked this generation. Ironically, once it lost HM status, it immediately became a better move; its accuracy was 100% in Gen 4 (I used it on my Espeon in SoulSilver).
@@CyberchaoX didnt Defog go through a similar change? used to just increase accuracy? then it removed entry hazards? i dont play competitive so know next to nothing lol
I remember lance having weird AI quirks, and taking advantage of them - I think if you have status moves he will hold on to full restores and heals for later party members.
About the ghost gym: why not use Struggle? You could have gone into the fight with all 10pp on Mega Drain, about 5 on Sleep Powder and none on Return and Synthesis. Fight them as you did and when you have no more Mega Drain's Struggle them down. Probably could have given you the win (way) earlier, especially if the last Haunter cooperated and used Curse. This would be the only issue that I see with Rare Candy-Cheats: not coming up with clever strategies when faced with a hard challenge, or planning it more, i.e. keeping Leech Seed for the Ghost Gym and learning Return after Morty or maybe even after Jasmin. That way you wouldn't have had to grind so much before Morty. Though, in this run that would have just postponed the grind, which would have at least increased the amount of Exp gained per Pokémon.
Was Gen2 the one that made Struggle *not* a normal type move anymore? I know you can hit ghosts with it in Gen3, and you can’t in Gen1, but I’m not sure if Gen2 was when the change was made.
@@wesdk1013 Gen 2 was when struggle stopped being affected by type. See Jrose11's Johto magikarp solo run. Struggle for the ghost gym (not itemless). Still if you can get to the last haunter, you can probably finish it off with hoppip if you have enough health left.
Ok, so like, I love these challenges weekly. That being said, with these types of challenges, it's not a nuzlocke. Shouldn't we agree using rare candies at the start is better for everyone? It's just a grind for grinds sake. It's not like finding metapod is challenging, it's just time consuming, and slows progression ok challenges. I know it's a slippery slope when it comes to candy rules, but these are silly for non attacking pokemon in the early grind.
I was going to suggest something similar. I was thinking he should allow gamesharking full restores for struggle grind runs. Both get the job done but with different EVs
@@terrinater I think just rare candy'ing until he gets a basic attacking move is good enough. Whether it's tackle, or even leech seed. Something that does direct damage.

leech seed would've been fine against steelix, I think. But you might have been able to take out haunter earlier if you had strategically lost pp and used struggle strats.
This was awesome! I'm so glad u were able to complete the run entirely! I can't wait for the next one, it's my two most wanted runs back to back, so cools! Keep up the great work
Maybe for a less complicated challenge: I sometime somewhat like a Type-Link challenge especially when playing new game. My rule is pretty simple every pokemon has to have one other pokemon on your team that shares the same type. But no type should be represented more than 2 times. You can also increase difficulty by linking the death with the types. It's quite funny because sometime you struggle with bad pokemon and really bad type match-up (i.e: in my last playthrough in diamond I had 4 pokemons for the Ice-Arena, all of them having an ice weakness) but you also get to play a lot of new pokemon.
First things first: Thank you for the headsup on the video being up :) (those who know, know). Now, re:rare candies to skip grind: I say go for it regardless. Saves you a ridiculous number of hours in grind and allows you to allocate that time elsewhere (editing, streaming, etc). I don't think it makes any difference, even with the "but you can die when you fight wild pokemon/other trainers." argument - at that point, losing a fight is just a time waste, so why bother with that risk just for grinding when you can save yourself hours of your time using the rare candies to accomplish the exact same thing? Even in regards to the IVs/stat experience, it makes barely any difference (and you can always just waste money on Vitamins to ensure they're maxed out anyway). Keep up the great content and stay safe!
Did he mention early game grinds (stuff like the whole Struggle stuff) at all when he was talking about it? Because whilst it saves time, not starting with an attacking move is part o the reason some of these runs are suggested

I have a habit of before retiring a pokemon who have entered the hall of fame, one should be able to single-handedly fight all the elite 4 + champion and the pokemon master that is hidden away.
I'm all in on the rare candies thing, even though this time could have been avoided by not deleting Leech Seed. I see it could bring some discussion whether it will make him go down the overleveling route before the strategy one, tho.
I appreciate the compromise you’ve reached on the rare candy issue, though I think you could have gotten away with being a little more generous to yourself, a full day of grinding is a lot after all. Most importantly though, I’m happy your doing this because it means you can do more interesting runs without risking months with bad revenue.
I really hope that the Stat Experience clause becomes a permanent facet of your rules. You deserve it. Like you said, its just as legit as wasting all that time.
Thank you for the video. I'd like a Blastoise, Octillery, and Golem run. Please feel free to use rare candies, iron, or whatever else would help ease the strain of these runs, so long as it's not hacking in illegal moves or the like. Just as long as it's convenience stuff that could be acquired by grinding anyway, there's really no need to worry about it. I think hoppip can learn headbutt, and if it can you could've used the free headbutt TM from the forest and saved the return TM for after morty then you would've had leech seed and mega drain for that gym. The other option would've been to waste return PP before the fight, then when you run out of your other moves you'd have struggle to finish off the last mon possibly. Still a fun challenge to watch either way much love MDB

Oh that's good. I typically use Gastly/Haunter with Curse, though that's Gen 2. I know Gen 4 Miltank has Scrappy. It's like the devs read all the comments about how evil the original Miltank was and said, "Yass but how can we makes it truuuuly evil" while clicking their talons together.
Would love to see a Vibrava only run in some Gen. While I know you mostly do first form challenges, Vibrava is actually about as strong as first form Starter with 340 total. Maybe a Platinum Run or HGSS, so you have to face an Ice Type Gym leader
This makes me really curious as to what Jumpluff would be like. Like how much would that evolution change things? The time save would be tremendous considering Jumpluff starts with tackle.
Wow, Sleep Powder/Leech Seed might be the best combo for taking on Whitney 😆 Sleep Powder stops Miltank from doing damage and cancels her combos, which it does way too much of. Leech Seed then turns Miltank's large HP into an advantage since you recover more HP from higher HP Pokemon.
Looking at the moveset, I was surprised you didn't kept Leech Seed. I also thought you could have used Curse to boost the stats but I understand not wanting to lose speed. Also, you should look more into the IV... If you want to do an easier run, Emerald with Zangoose and Seviper.

I'd love to see a run with my favorite q-tip swablu! Always makes my day watching these videos
There was something extremely satisfying about seeing the ice puzzle solved so quickly--
MDB, I've watched pretty much all of your pokemon challenges. You tend to play the generations I am familiar with and I like your narrating style. I know they are a hard grind for some of them but for me these are the most entertaining videos on your channel. Keep it up!
Instead of Leech Seed, you should have lost Return then fudged your clock to get a second TM
Yeah. I mean if we're at the point where hacked rare candies are okay, surely changing the clock is acceptable.
@@jamesdinius7769 Rare candies are a time saving measure and when your stats are capped there's no harm.
Since he tries to do these weekly, clock manipulation is fair.
im glad you decided to use rare candies
As a user of underappreciated pokemon types, I am an avid user of sleep powder, hypnosis, and yawn. Helps a lot.
I have a habit of before retiring a pokemon who have entered the hall of fame, one should be able to single-handedly fight all the elite 4 + champion and the pokemon master that is hidden away.
The rare candies move is smart. All for it! Videos on time and you aren't burning yourself out is a great combo 😊
Sorry about your medical troubles man. Hope this helps in a small way
I really hope that the Stat Experience clause becomes a permanent facet of your rules. You deserve it. Like you said, its just as legit as wasting all that time.
No way you beat red with Hoppip. That's insane! To think i use to struggle with a team of strong pokemon 😭
Ah Yes, hoppip the Magikarp of the land.
I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I want to make sure that you know that there are people who wouldn't have a problem with it.
Absolute mad lad 😊 hoppip did way better than I expected!
I hope he picked the helix fossil this episode
27:45 - lance only has 1 Full Restore, and he only uses it on his lvl 50 Dragonite
1st form bugs in Fire Red? Neat!!! Can't wait!
Hey MDB great challenge and as someone who left a commented against rare candys at first i am super happy with the compromise you found! It´s a great solution :)
love these videos. I 100% agree with the people that say to use rare candies to help you save time and sanity. I know some nuzlockers are starting to adopt that as well so you dont get ruined by RNG while grinding. But I do like the comprimise you made as well.
These challenge videos remind me that the struggle is indeed quite real. But so is the success
Lance: As the most powerful trainer and as the Pokémon League Champion… I, Lance the dragon master, accept your challenge!
ScotYTHoty: ゴゴゴゴゴゴ
I love your content MDB. Can’t wait to see the next challenge. Also I still offer that Gen 4 only fire types. It could be challenging since there is only a few fire types in the game. :)
Huge shout out to MDB for keeping on keeping on! We understand it's tough to be uploading challenge vids considering the time it takes, but we hope you know that we all appreciate it very much and your vids mean the world to us!
Good stuff, your patience is legendary!
For a slightly easier time it'd be neat to see a Bonsly or Baltoy run
I've been waiting for this run for years thank you so much.
Xatu using ‘confusion ray’, I love those small mistakes in the script, had to listen to it twice to realise you really said that haha
If you don't want to use rare candy, you can always use a experience multiplier cheat code. Specially while using a pokemon that grows slowly.
Thank you, Joey, for telling me to follow MDB on Twitter to come here early. Hopefully comments are still good for the UA-cam algorithm.
Let me just eat tons of candy that will help ready for a fight
Only that worked in real life
I mean the fight of every day life lol
I think hoppip can learn headbutt, and if it can you could've used the free headbutt TM from the forest and saved the return TM for after morty then you would've had leech seed and mega drain for that gym. The other option would've been to waste return PP before the fight, then when you run out of your other moves you'd have struggle to finish off the last mon possibly.
Still a fun challenge to watch either way much love MDB
100% okay with rare candies. You deserve to not sit for hours and hours and grind.
I love the sneak peek for following you on multiple platforms. Kudos good sir. 👍
I thought this run would take forever but he got to Pokémon Champion Russel in record time! Cant wait for the next challenge MahDryBread always looking forward to the challenge videos after a rough week at work!!
Nice run. I'm happy that you have a mother you can enjoy video games with. Mine has always been super jugdmental and would never join.
Sidenote: Great Whitney strat, my usual go-to is Togepi with a Sweet Kiss/Attract Combo. Though this is on Heart Gold.
Great on the Rare candy compromise very close to my suggestion!
The time save would be tremendous considering Jumpluff starts with tackle.
>has the best possible moves proven by how Whitney was trivial
>immediately deletes them for Morty and gets stuck
lmao
All that sunny day sure brightened up my day. Thank you ScotYTHoty!
Fun fact: you can select numbers for a pokemon's name in the additional character menu, the one that had lower-case characters
I'll be honest, I genuinely didn't expect a Red win with this one even at lvl100, objectively one of the weakest pokemon in the series. well done
Wow, Sleep Powder/Leech Seed might be the best combo for taking on Whitney 😆
Sleep Powder stops Miltank from doing damage and cancels her combos, which it does way too much of.
Leech Seed then turns Miltank's large HP into an advantage since you recover more HP from higher HP Pokemon.
These videos are the ones I look forward to every week, always love them.
Looking at the moveset, I was surprised you didn't kept Leech Seed. I also thought you could have used Curse to boost the stats but I understand not wanting to lose speed. Also, you should look more into the IV...
If you want to do an easier run, Emerald with Zangoose and Seviper.
Pokémon Champion Russel!! Love that guy. Such a good chap
"I was here on Friday" stamp
Hello, lover of wrestling here, back again. Now I do know the other comment on the Rattata video was a big too close for you to see. So here I am again, here is the fun.
Pokémon: Helioptile (Bopter)
Preferred Nature: Quiet
Generation: 8
Game: Brilliant Diamond
I dunno, I think it would be funny...
Edit: Not quite sure, sure you can just put it in, maybe, I dunno Randomizers do it so, you got this
I really like this little plant boi, especially after the Pokemon go community day for hoppip
I'm glad you're finally using rare candies to get by brick walls. Sometimes it messes with the flow of the video when you keep having to say "I made a ton of attempts, now let's go grind again for the third time this fight."
Also, I'd like to take a second to suggest doing pokemon gold/silver with a single Murkrow
I love imagining the elite four and champion seeing someone walk up with a Hoppip and thinking "How'd he get here?" then they see that its MDB and they think "God help us..."
Sometimes I don’t know how you keep up with these, I’m not sure I could have made it through that horrendous early grind against metapod
I accidently saved this until you were too sick to make new vids, so now I effectively have a new Mah-Dry-Bread video while everyone else has to wait. I'm brilliant. That's how that works right?
Yet another banger from Canadian youtuber Mr. Dry Bread.
Dang you had to get to lv100 to even win? I didn't realise how hard this would be going in, damn. The sleep powder spam is a relatable tactic lmao.
Looking forward to the fire red with only bug babies, fire red is my faveee
I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but you can get Return more than once. Should have replaced that for the fight with Morty and retaught it later.
Also, sleep and leech seed can be a powerful combo. Should've kept it for sure.
We love living a normal human being life! Great video, surprising end!
