Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening, and more! Fewer levels - yes. Sandstone - yes. Pump - yes. More open plan - excellent. I love it when a plan changes for the better. Keep up your courage Sean. This cottage is going to be amazing.
You have plenty of stones on your property. I was stationed near Evreux 64-66. A Frenchman said to me, "See that field over there, all those stones..... well we have been farming the fields around here for 2,000 years..... and we have a bumper crop of stones every year!"
And I live in Nebraska, where early settlers had neither trees nor stones to build their homes. They lived in houses built of sod until they could afford lumber brought in by train. They also planted tress…lots of trees!
Hi everyone hope your having good weather today, we certainly are
It's beautiful here in my neck if the woods. Glad to hear you're having better weather as well.
@@Ruth-uj1dm great 👍 Ruth
Nice here today
@markanthony1507 hi Mark hope u well mate 👍
Beautiful day here in New England states. Picture perfect! 🌺🌞
I think bringing the kitchen area level with the living room is the way to go. Multiple levels and walls in such a small space only serve to make it feel cramped and disjointed.
And difficult to navigate and move furniture.
Sean I’m impressed with your ability to remain open to the floor plan.
Having the kitchen and living area on the same level is a great idea!
I am so, so happy you've reduced the area to two levels. Practically, it increases the usable space of the kitchen by more than the space you added as people can step into the living area space. It will also make it easier to maneuver the steps, especially when carrying things like laundry up and down. I love the wood faming as it echoes the fireplace and it is always nice to keep the unmovables in a design working together as much as possible.
Sean is the cottage whisperer.
Sean I absolutely love the changes you're making. Using more oak on that side of the cottage is brilliant. Keeping it opened up now will really look fantastic. Stopping to take a good look at it has really worked out well. Good job to you and Sam.🥰
I like the new plan seems roomier and easier to navigate
100% on board with the new plan. I'm sure you will be much happier with the result.
Sometimes you just need to step back a bit and rethink the plan to make sure it is still what will make you happy.
Thank you for having Sam share her thoughts about the cottage layout. I think that keeping it open will work out well.
I knew that void was going to drive you nuts!!
Me too! I’m not a builder but it was driving me nuts.😂
Sean, I love your new concept with one level! So much more efficient and easier to maneuver around & it will look bigger without all the different levels to negotiate. If ever you utilize the cottage for guests or B&B, then you won’t have to worry about someone forgetting about stepping in the wrong direction while carrying things to and fro from fireplace to kitchen. I think this cottage is speaking to you to tell you what it needs to be now after all these years!
Sean, I am so happy you made these changes. The open floor plan is going to be so much better. I really think you could find an antique piece of furniture/table to use as a center island and place to sit and have coffee, food, tea. Now that you’ll have one level it will be lovely.
So happy with the new plan! The whole room will look so cohesive now and the wall won't close the space up so access from all sides to the kitchen will also be better.
I like the new idea for the floor just more work for you. I know it makes it more special though because you designed it the way you wanted it. Have a great day
I love the idea of more open plan. You're a wizard at this stuff Sean.
With a little help from Sam 😊.
Much better idea , open plan . Its a small space ,so any room should be utilised with as much space as possible. I love it .
I bet Sam had a hand in that design 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Good thing I’ve got Carmel popcorn….i set up for an amazing watch!
Oh I like the shift in floor levels….the design simplicity. Adds such beauty and usefulness of space
Sean you really never cease to amaze me, also able to rethink and adapt. Most people would have given up ripped the buildings down being them to be totally unsalvable it's a joy to watch you
Thank you 😊
Eureka, sounds very cohesive. Glad Sam had some input. No pressure but can't wait to see how it turns out. x
Makes a lot of sense Sean, you had your thinking cap on there 😃. I love how you really think things through and adapt to every twist and turn that does your way.
Hi Sean - that is a much better layout for the cottage but I’m worried about your back. Need to get Tom and Jack in for the heavy lifting 😉
All good thanks 😊
Sean I sure like the new direction you have chosen to go. Much more on one level!!
Sean, I have no idea what you’re doing, but judging by past projects it will be lovely 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
Wow! I am so glad you rethought your original plan! In such a small space, multiple hights is such an accident hazard! This plan is so much better! More work, but better overall!❤
Absolutely Brilliant idea Sean - although it's more shifting soil don't over do it! Especially on the warmer days. Oak beams as edging - love it! Cannot wait to see this floor transformation ❤
Clever change of plans; just hoping there will be enough floor space for furniture! more power!
Hi Sean. A change of plans is necessary at times. It sounds like this is a good change of plans. Take care in the hotter weather.❤
So glad you decided to make it one level. 😊I've been thinking that since your inception. 😊❤
Much better design, Sean. Not so busy to look at and very cohesive too.
Excellent work and episode! Be well, stay safe all. 😊❤👍
💯
Hi Sean and Sam! Enjoyed your vlog very much! I am so happy you changed to a more open floor plan; it really makes the space seem larger. I think in the long run it will be much less labour intensive and less expensive. Sometimes less is more...KISS principle.😊 Thanks for sharing with us! ❤ 🇨🇦
Sean, you are a one man mean machine!! One stone at a time…!! Good new idea about leveling the kitchen with the living room. Be very careful of your back….it doesn’t take a lot when you’ve already injured it. Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🌷🐻
Much better. Not so many levels, the wood and paving will make a nicer entrance. Things seem to be coming together.
It makes so much more sense that way. Going to be great!
I really love the way your mind changes, and you come up with different, usually better ideas for something. Well done.
I love the new plan Sean!! Open concept, all one level… lovely .. no walls!! Can’t wait to see it come together. Very talented!!
I have no imagination when it comes to seeing how the plan will look when completed. I trust you Sean, knowing you it is going to be stellar when finished. Have a good weekend🙏🏼❤️
I was thinking the same 😂😂 Sean has amazing talent and imagination 🎉
Well it's always good to rethink things out.Better ideas can make things better all the way around. We all look forward to seeing what's next.
Love your new ideas Sean. I always think it’s your project you can do what you want to do. It’s a joy just to be able to watch you achieve your aims and take us along with you. Good luck to you both. x
I know you added a great deal more work for yourself, but your new layout sounds wonderful!! I can't wait to see your progress
Good changes to your plans. 60yrs. Ago when adding a kitchen and bathroom to a basement we used an ejector pump to take water back to the sewer main. A back up generator kept it going when the power went out. Your solar set up could probably keep it going.
Sean you have your work cut out for you. Bless Sam she’ll make you sit down for a cuppa.
Sean I have been hoping you would take this opportunity to excavate the whole floor of the cottage to finally solve the question of what is beneath the present floor. I think this action will prevent any future surprises that will be costly or affect the structure of the cottage.
I think you're likely right. I'd take it all the way back to the same level he's dug out up until now.
I'm sure there's a whole 'nother level of a house down there just waiting to unburied, pressure-washed and brought back to life.
Hopefully Sean will investigate all the way to that point, will be interesting to see and you can't beat the extra ceiling height that'll come with digging down the floors if nothing's there. Win win all around, really.
You've thought up a great new floor plan Sean... truly enjoy following along with your Cottage Restoration !
Just dig it all out and see what you have got!
💯
I just wanted to say i have learned so much about stoneworking watching you. Thank you. Also, equally enjoyable, are listening to all the joyful bird 🐦🐦⬛🦅🕊🦉 songs 🎼🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶 ❤❤❤😊
Redesign seems like a much better idea. More open so you can go right up the steps from kitchen or from side in salon.
I like this plan much better than the previous one, and I'm glad you're addressing the void in the floor at the same time. I think a little counter (maybe L-shaped?) at the bottom of the stairs is a better use of the space than a wall. You'll never regret having more counter space to work on, but walls often just end up being in the way.
You can still make use of the beautiful old windows you found. Maybe you can make a slim box to mount them on and put lights inside the box so that they look like illuminated windows when they're mounted on the wall? If you used LED bulbs that can change from daylight to warm white, you could imitate daylight coming through them during the day and use the warmer light at night to make it feel cosy.
Unlike many folks of your gender (LOL) you are flexible when you meet a problem. I bet living with Sam has helped you understand that change is good. Seriously, this is an amazing change of design.
The project is really getting exciting now. Good work Sean. God bless to you and your wife.
I like your new idea, Sean. Now that I'm picturing it, it makes a lot more sense. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Sean, I think the new design is great. It will make better use of the space. 😊
A very good idea, this new plan. It may very well get even closer to what could look as a traditional interior at the time. Well done, Sean.
yea, for some reason there's so much height to the floor, I was worried the height would stick around, but am glad Sean put some thought in it and was able to notice that too. The different levels in any home end up driving people absolutely insane because, well, yea, nothing's on the same level and it's just really awkward.
I'm happy to see he's pulling back the layers of the kitchen, that will really make it look better and will add height to the ceiling. In terms of water, a French Drain system could easily take care of any standing water issues.
Back breaking work but it will be worth it. I like the new plan.
As I said the other day Sean I knew you’d get to the bottom of it eventually 🤗🤗🤗👍👍
I am happy that you have had a rethink. Reviewing and flexibility is a good strategy. Just mind that back as we don't want you incapacitated! 😀
I don't know exactly what your vision is but I know it will be amazing. I'm enjoying watching this process and look forward to seeing the progress in future videos.
Love your new open plan and two levels idea better think it will suit the size of the cottage better. Stone carcass for your kitchen cupboards with seasoned oak doors wood look amazing. That is so back breaking work, lots of bubble baths to ease those achy back muscles
As for the height of the kitchen and the idea of the pump (aka "water lifting system"), I know people who have the immediate area of their kitchen cabinets, i.e. the worktop, sink, oven etc. a step higher than the rest of the kitchen floor, with a step area of about 1m width in front of it. I.e. that step and the actual working area are higher than the rest of the kitchen floor. Sorry if I'm not describing it very well, but I think you get what I mean. It works fine for them and you get used to it very quickly. They had the raised standing area built of wood.
YES!!! Love the more open and flowing plan! 🎉
Sean I think you should build your stairs to the second floor before you go any further! From what it looks like in the pictures you have very much room for a landing at the bottom, lots of luck with your project
Great new plan! I hope after all thay amazing work you visited your own little British pub, put your feet up and relaxed! 😊
I like the new plan much better. When planning a seating area it's not fun to sit and look at a wall while eating. I think that area would work much better as a work space. But that just my opinion 😁
Must say I didn’t like your first idea, this new layout change is so much better. 😊👍👍
Much better Idea Sean. Well thought of. open plan, is a good plan. 10/10
I’m loving the changes Sean, it will be much easy for you both and will look lovely with those wood beams sectioning off the room.
By those stairs against that wall, storage underneath a nice work top would be lovely… just a thought. ❤❤
Sean, glad you changed the layout, it makes a lot more sense, plus a lot more work for you. Enjoy your weekend.. It are July 1st weekend.
I had thought that in the last video to level all the floors :) it's a bit of work but at least you will know everything is cleared and no issues. I would still put in the half wall as it will give extra space for storage and possibly even counter space. You could also incorporate a rail from the wall for the stairs at least on one side going up to the loft. I like the slate tiles as you will need more tiles for the rest of the flooring it would be less to tile at least in one area.
Making the floor all one level, I think, would male the room look bigger. Installing a pump is a cost but hopefully will be better. One level will be easier on the knees and back, especially as one ages. I see your excitement with this new plan. :)
Love the change order it is going to be perfect
Sean! I really like the idea of an open floor plan. It will
Make the rather small size of the rooms look much bigger. Would it be possible for you to make a drawn floor plan of what you have in mind so that we can get a better idea of how the fireplace, stairway and kitchen will relate to one another?
Sean! Here’s to open minds and wives!❤
More open plan for a small space is the way to go Sean. There has to be a good flow. 😊
What a great change in plan! Sam just got you thinking more clearly and got you to turn around the levels to accommodate the plan of the entire space! It certainly is a better use of the space you have and it will be much more open. Congrats on the change. Hope it will be less hurtful on your back as there will be fewer trips out with the heavy wheelbarrow and that is a huge plus! Looking forward to seeing the next step! Have a great weekend, Sean!!!
Much better plan thanks for sharing ❤
It’s a lot of physical work, but the new plan so far will open it up more. 👍
Well thought out Sean.....I think this plan will work nicely for the both of you!! Well done!
Like the new plan just about got my head round it in the end 👍🤗see you in next one sun still shining 🌞 her today Saturday
Not quite so not so far 🤗
Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
More work but sounds better
Thank you for another insight into your cottage upgrade. And am liking it, when a plan comes together.
Good call on changes. I would suggest an cabinet base for sink on back wall with cabinet for cooktop on right wall. Then a freestanding island with extended top to provide both worktop and breakfast bar. If that were on wheels it would be even more versatile. Upper cabinets as appropriate.
Keep up the great work and creative genius! 😁🇺🇸
Open concept makes more sense for a small space
Just think how tall People 🤔 were back then when the Cottage was First built !!!
Or how short they were 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Sean, much better plan! Looks better already. It’s too bad. You can’t use the stable next to it to make a larger cottage adore under the stairs through to the other side would’ve been cool though maybe not structurally possible. It would be much more usable home space. I’m actually glad you changed it because I was starting to wonder about the design lol!
Hello Sean, I do like the way you have adapted from the previous idea / plan and the floor materials to be used agin in a different way! Really enjoyed watching this video. Best wishes from Lincolnshire
Sounds like a better plan!
Like your new plans, sounds exciting. Looking forward to seeing it🙌
great plan shaun thankyou for sharing you do work hard but also think outside the box
Excellent choice you've made. 🎉
I like the floor levels on the same. It would be less likely to trip in stepping up and down.
Not possible
I like the changes you have made ❤
Its going to be lovely❤
decide and stick with it - anxious to see it done...lol
Love to watch how the cottage design changes and morphs as you discover its different hidden treasures
I agree the extra work will be worth it.
