I totally agree with this. In my reno I started with the garden much to protests from my husband. 7yrs on the house is finished and the garden has matured and filled out perfectly for the home.
Every time an unnecessary piece of old wall, ceiling or stud work comes down, I smile a bit more and the house seems to do the same. I can only guess how excited you and your family are to see it. Yes it was a strange way to do things, it must have been cheaper, I was thinking if the handrail might be original but the metal rods certainly aren’t, but I could be wrong it has been known lol.

I hoped the decorative bit around the ceiling light hid under the false ceiling. You can see that it was there at one time. You have completed a massive amount of demolition! Removing the walls around the stairwell really brings the house back to life!

Amazing progress!!! Here in Canada, asbestos was added to drywall compound for a period of time around the middle 1900s and is frequently encountered in home renovations. Asbestos was wrapped around hot water pipes and also found its way into linoleum floor tiles.

Lovely to see the proportions ofthe old house/rooms coming back. I have worked in many old houses over 😮 been converted (badly) for institutional use. The staircases were especially horrid and enclosed to conform to fire regs apparently…often using asbestos board…but one had an 18 th century staircase which we were allowed to keep open because it was of architectural historical importance! Also…do hope you are going to have a drain survey with a camera/film. They aren’t cheap but are really helpful to highlight any probs/future maintenance AND help explain what drain is going where😀. I once worked at a university during a time that they were doing a remodel and needed to get an asbestos evaluation. Turned out there was one 5 foot long stretch of wall that had asbestos in it. Weird, right? A 3 story building, ONE tiny part of a wall with asbestos. Best we could figure was that it got damaged at some point and they used someone's leftover asbestos wallboard to fix it. LOL. In any case, the asbestos abatement person said that as long as no one does anything that would make a hole in the wall (like hanging an award or something), we didn't need to have it removed. So we had a student who was a fantastic artist paint a mural on it, so no one would want to hang anything there. It also provided reasonable certainty that, if the records about the wall got lost, people in the future might think twice about doing anything to the wall because it had student artwork on it. Anyway, great video! Love to watch your progress!

I just love the classical symmetry of Georgian houses and the amount of light that comes into the rooms. This will be a fabulous home when it’s completed. I know it’s expensive, but that aluminium joinery really needs to go. It will make an enormous difference putting the right windows back in. One of the great things about Georgian houses is that the rooms do not need lots of furnishings to look right. The Georgians unlike the Victorians did not go for clutter. The rooms were often painted or wallpapered in light colours with a few tasteful pieces of high quality furniture to give a sense of spaciousness and elegance. You guys are doing a great job and I’m excited to see the progress.
Those two walls are going to make the flow of this house so much better, so it doesnt feel like a maze, awesome! Im so glad you posted that first video, asbestos is so terrible. It caused lung cancer that spread and killed my grandpa and I have a friend who grew up where it was mined in Montana, US amd she has scarred lungs with limited capacity and only one compromised kidney. Such a crime the company and state hid the danger from people

If you can get your hands on a reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade you can make quick work of those stud walls (cutting at the nailing points) and salvage the timber for future use. It looks to be old dimensional cut 2 x 4. Nice stuff to have on hand. Great to see the old place coming back to life!

The layout of the bathrooms will definitely change. There are too many and they're too small. The kitchens and bathrooms will need to be refreshed anyway.
As you work, we can see what a magnificent home this can become. Hopefully your vision can keep your excitement up during the "go backwards to go forwards" bits.
The answer is most likely that because these flats were for a while intended as low cost housing, they wanted to reduce heating costs as much as possible for the residents. Lowering the ceilings reduces the area to heat and they also packed the space with insulation.

U may want to be careful of children don’t climb over that landing banister ..it’s coming along now.
Opening up the main staircase is definitely a boon to see originality of seeing through a banister sweep up to an elegant light-filled landing view.
you need to keep all of that wood stud work , it will come in handy and will save you money in the long term 😉

Rough guide no more than £350 per m/sq for asbestos removal - could be looking at 3k I reckon.

Save as much lumber as you can and have a nail pulling party. Store in a dry place off the ground . it'll come in handy as you rebuild and repair.

We haven't decided yet. We've been looking at radiators in more traditional styles, but under-floor heating might also be an option.
