I am all confused. Who is honestly probably versatile and alive? And who is the band? Touring? On the record? Oh. never mind, I could find a Link Wray Link.
As a guitar player, I got into into musicians such as Steve Vai, Satriani, Frank/Dweezil Zappa, Steve Morse. Nowadays, these performances are really inspiring to listen to. Julian's playing, in itself, is refreshing to hear. Have to check out more from these guys. So, thanks for this. Great stuff!
The Colley Wollesen Trio is amazing, but these guys are going to some different, really original, incredibly exciting places. They have the best chemistry of any band I've heard with Julian.
I’m completely late to the game, but I just discovered Julian today (what?) and am blown the f away! Where has this music been all my life? Beyond incredible and such a humble guy.
stratmad enjoy my friend. I wish I could discover Julian all over again. Listen to his playing with the Nels Cline 4. Mind blowing as well. There is a YT video of them that defies description.
Saw them in Amsterdam last july. Front row.... could almost touch the drummers artery in his neck. It was a fantastic concert. Man! It really made me very happy....
The freshest air in mainstream jazz we got in years now! It has guts and attitude for a change! Not all that soft hipsterian indie melancholy that found its way into the jazz scene in the last two decades (if we don't count the free scene that kicks as*!! )
It's not about you - it's about the music. Just listen and if you don't get it move on so the rest of us can hear and enjoy. It's like seeing an angle - not everyone can see it but it doesn't take away the beauty that we see. Peace!
The first song reminded me of some bands I used to like around 2000 like Karate, The Sorts or Euphone. Either way he as a musician is beyond all those bands.
Eric Schultz Danny was actually an incredible jazz improviser as well. There is a video on UA-cam of him playing with a jazz band at a Holiday Inn (just...wow...). Blew my mind as I only knew him as a country picker up until that point.
Wow. Unapologetic rock with no limit on where he can take his playing, the guitar as an instrument, or the song as a whole. Anyone know his new amp setup? Maybe an old Deluxe?
Hey Bruno, thanks for the tip. I did just read an article on his new stuff in Premier Guitar, where he is playing new songs in DC using a '64 Fender Princeton. Either way, this guy sounds amazing. (www.premierguitar.com/articles/27063-julian-lage-look-book-video-premiere?Sailthru&PGN%20-%20022718&PG%20Weekly)
Hi Sean, indeed. The magic amps are a recent addition for touring, I believe. I think Julien will be using a Magic Tweed Deluxe and Vibro Prince (a really good princeton reverb type amp).
He had just gotten the Vibro Prince the night I saw him in Atlanta. It sounded fantastic all night, and afterwards he said he really enjoyed it too. Fantastic amp.
am i out of my mind imagining a group where julian lage playes with jacob colier on piano, ari hoenig on drums and mononeon on bass????? is that too much to ask ah yes it is
I believe it's a TC Polytune->JHS Morning Glory->Strymon Flint. He's stated in interviews that he prefers plugging straight into his Fender Champs, and only uses the pedals when he needs to simulate overdrive because he can't crank his amp (i.e. the Paste Studio is small).
His sound is a lot more saturated/distorted than usual.... is he pushing a preamp of some sort? Its a small space, I doubt the amp is cranked, I have a very similar amp and it gets hella loud to sound like that...
I think there’s something not quite right about the recording quality. Even the voices sounded crispy. I don’t think the crunch sound that we were hearing was what Julian was hearing. That said this is the most rocking stuff I’ve heard from him. Like the tunes and the playing. Just wish the audio quality was better.
His overdrive break up sounds pretty harsh (like a $75 solid state amp) coming over the Internet and into my speakers at home. What's going there? Maybe it sounds way better in the studio.
This is a guitarist who changes every time you see him ,always keeping it fresh ,
The best of this generation.
Deeply sorry for this generation..
Honestly probably the most versatile guitarist alive. This man could play along with rocks pelting a car behind a dump truck.
that's the most accurate definition i've ever heard haha, well done
I am all confused. Who is honestly probably versatile and alive? And who is the band? Touring? On the record? Oh. never mind, I could find a Link Wray Link.
I would listen to it for sure
Well, he rocks, after all.....*heads out*
probably the hardest-rocking set I've ever heard from him
He definitely seems to be playing it up for Paste
Agreed.
Zappa is still king in my kingdom.
Wow ... most original and versatile guitar work I've ever heard!
Best Roger the Dodger ever, incredible performance!
That BASS on Roger the Dodger! OMG. Killing it.
Robert Keeley your work is amazing too!!
Excellent indeed! Very Eddie Gomezwise... ;-)
Hell yeah!
Mister Pumpkinhead and Jorge is the Nicest dude too! Just super friendly.
He meets muse
The Colley Wollesen Trio is amazing, but these guys are going to some different, really original, incredibly exciting places. They have the best chemistry of any band I've heard with Julian.
Eric and Jorge are super cool people too. Very nice and kind.
He makes me want a telecaster so bad
I've got one. I have to tell: you won't be a player like him, just because you have a tele :/
Go ahead and get yourself a tele. You won't be disappointed.
@@sharkbaitseamus get two. Or four.
i have 7 teles amazing guitars
Go for it.,
Man, I keep coming back. Superb playing. I love the Roger the Dodger version, their connection is amazing!!
I’m completely late to the game, but I just discovered Julian today (what?) and am blown the f away! Where has this music been all my life? Beyond incredible and such a humble guy.

What a blast..a genuine prodigy who has lived up to and exceeded the expectations. Schubert would be proud.
merci, trois excellents morceaux, la parlotte aussi
love every song, note, and rhythm!!!!!
Underrated set. Reckless attack and effortless musicality from Monsieur Lage, paired with tight, muscular rhythm section
Julian has such great taste in what to play.
A breath of fresh air.
Julian's music is always enjoyable. It's good to listen to. Sometimes it's a bit of a challenge, but that's fine too.
Saw him last night at the Berklee Performance Center. It was an incredible live experience.
He's playing in portland in September at a tiny club. I saw him there a year ago with Nels Cline, awesome.
Absolutely brilliant
Can we just appreciate the bass player at 15:37? Groovy dude
Julian... superb!!! Love this trio as much as the other :)
Searingly intense yet sublime.
Mind-blowing talent and showmanship from each member of the trio.
It just can't get any better than this.
Saw them in Amsterdam last july. Front row.... could almost touch the drummers artery in his neck. It was a fantastic concert. Man! It really made me very happy....
Top shelf all the way. Had to come back
Thank You Julian, Thank you!
These guys are having a blast.
I found Julian Lage through Nels Cline (big fan) and I'm glad I did. Gotta check out more of his stuff.
Esta Loco este tipo Por Dios lo que toca Juliannnnnnn !!! Sin dudas uno de los mejores guitarrista de la Actualidad !!!
The freshest air in mainstream jazz we got in years now! It has guts and attitude for a change! Not all that soft hipsterian indie melancholy that found its way into the jazz scene in the last two decades (if we don't count the free scene that kicks as*!! )
His best trio lineup by far
Nice old Rodgers kit! Love those drums.
Estilo john scofield en la primero composición 😊
Beautiful
charged and fired. rocky version of so talented julian lage and a hypergrooving combo. phhh
the fills at 18:05 after that build up are very sneaky. Love it.
It’s a great record! And this video is great too.
Hey Nick! Just incredible huh! I'm having all of Modern Lore transcribed. I'll send you some if you're interested!
Hey man! Yeah, i'd love to see those transcriptions. Thanks so much. I'll be in touch asap. Cheers NG
Julian reminds me of a slightly folkier Bill Frisell. Would love to hear them play together.
Search youtube, it exists!
this touring band has great synergy!
Scofield and now this guy since I saw him with Gary Burton in 2009 are my favorites
I love power trios from Cream and Hendrix to Scofield and Lage, including Trapeze, The Police or Leño
Modern classic!
Drummer = perfection.
What a great sounding Nacho Guitar! Nacho Banos guitars are the best!
Wonderful!
Wow!
These cymbals sound fantastic. The hi hat is so lush... Whats these cymbals?
I'm thinking K custom dark drys or maybe the constantinoble series if i had to guess
these are sabian artisan
Nobody like Julian. Happy to alive at the same time as him.
It's not about you - it's about the music. Just listen and if you don't get it move on so the rest of us can hear and enjoy. It's like seeing an angle - not everyone can see it but it doesn't take away the beauty that we see. Peace!
very unique style
last song, Julian Lage channeling his inner John Scofield, the tone as well !! ;)
The first song reminded me of some bands I used to like around 2000 like Karate, The Sorts or Euphone. Either way he as a musician is beyond all those bands.
perfect!
Es una bestia, de lo milloe que ja , joan Catalonia lliure💕💕❤️
And I still don't know who is Bob Mallory but he's actually a legend to me
Nice 👍
Ok! I see I need to subscribe to your channel!
Julian too! Yeah!
Holy shit that augmented lick at 16:14 is sickkk
Great!!
If Danny Gatton could see this kid...
He's definitely got that supreme Danny "Everything is possible on a Telecaster" attitude with an impossibly rich Gatton-like skill set to match.
@@twangbarfly Gatton could never have improvised with such freedom. The only possible similarity is the use of the Telecaster.
@@Erschophone Oh dear....
Eric Schultz Danny was actually an incredible jazz improviser as well. There is a video on UA-cam of him playing with a jazz band at a Holiday Inn (just...wow...). Blew my mind as I only knew him as a country picker up until that point.
Credit the musicians... Vibe for days
Today on NPR we feature jazz on jazz equals jazz.
Fucking goooooood Telecaster player!!!!! Julian Lage rocks!!!
Shades of John Scofield & Mike Stern...
M CK More shades of Bill Friesland I’d say. Reminds me a lot of Frisell’s live trio album with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll
But the whole band sounds like sco's trio
M CK Nels Cline
agreed .. very Scofield
They're boring, he isn't. Probably because of his chords . JL is also sometimes compared to Bill Frisell but .....no.
Eric Doob is a monster. Plays a little like Tony and a little like Bill Stewart, but has his own take on it.
🕊️
Does anyone know if that is a champ or a fender Harvard ?
i’m also wondering, is that his 58 fender champ, or something else?
What amp he plays? Sounds nasty in a good way....
Magic fingers.
It!
This is WAY TOO SHORT!
I could’ve done with two more hours of this stuff at this one sitting.
See him live, ,over an hour and you're still wanting more. He's mind blowing live.
@@RobertKeeleyTV Yes, he is.
Wow. Unapologetic rock with no limit on where he can take his playing, the guitar as an instrument, or the song as a whole. Anyone know his new amp setup? Maybe an old Deluxe?
I think it's a Magic Amps tweed deluxe

top in the world
Does anyone know the model of Vox there?
well, its always interesting to see what hes doing
Mega

ah yes it is
how in the HELL can i get that guitar tone on atlantic limited
Not sure I get it . Like Out Like a Light era Scofield meets Frisell. Can t really hear the changes though ?
me see yellow telecaster: * C L I C C *
beautiful, reminds me of Scofield tho
styrmon flint, jhs milkman, can anyone tell that the other pedal Julian has in front of his amp?
I believe it's a TC Polytune->JHS Morning Glory->Strymon Flint. He's stated in interviews that he prefers plugging straight into his Fender Champs, and only uses the pedals when he needs to simulate overdrive because he can't crank his amp (i.e. the Paste Studio is small).
The "white" pedal is either a JHS Milkman or Superbolt. He's been spotted with both in 2018.
His sound is a lot more saturated/distorted than usual.... is he pushing a preamp of some sort? Its a small space, I doubt the amp is cranked, I have a very similar amp and it gets hella loud to sound like that...
He uses a morning glory to push the amp and usually a stryman flint for reverb
Who dislikes this???

4:40 holy shit he's out of breath... too funny.
1:57 Somebody's been studying up on classical Indian music.
omg
Holy shit. The voicings...the phrasing....just....dammit...
nuts
Giving credit to the other musicians wouldn't go amiss.
Julian live solo acoustic: ua-cam.com/video/0aH25792Cj0/v-deo.html
ALMIGHTY GODS AWESOME NAME SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN IN VAIN!! IT WILL NOT BE MOCKED WITHOUT ETERNAL DAMNATION! OM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Julian go play with Radiohead, come on..
That would be amazing
Radiohead is not on the same level
Can hear he's been hanging with Nels Cline
I just listened Grant Greens' "Born To Be Blue" album on tube then come here to see what's the fuss about this dude and sadly leaving after 2mins..
His overdrive break up sounds pretty harsh (like a $75 solid state amp) coming over the Internet and into my speakers at home. What's going there? Maybe it sounds way better in the studio.
technically impressive, great music and tone, playing and musicianship.... and almost too perfect regarding to guitar playing to my taste..
