I realize you typically react to music, but you also react to people sharing their experiences with you, and Tony's experience -- and his ability to communicate -- is one of a kind. I feel like a kid in a candy store when he talks about... well, anything. 😁

Thank you so much for this episode. My late husband, Geoff, was a huge Rolling Stones fan and an even bigger Keith Richards fan. He would’ve really loved watching this one. And he would of especially loved it when he heard Tony say that Keith Richards was the greatest rock ‘n’ roll artist of all time, because that was always Geoff’s opinion too!

Been thinking about making this suggestion for a while and your discussion with Tony Berg about Ry Cooder made up my mind: How about a reaction to slide/ bottleneck style guitarists who emerged from the blues revival of the 60s: Ry, of course, Duane Allman, and another LA player, Lowell George?

Lately, the Rolling Stones have been my favorite band. There's hardly a week that has gone by in the past several years that I haven't listened to Sticky Fingers and at least 2-3 other Stones albums all the way through. Thanks for the deep dive and really putting into words what I've always felt intuitively about their music. This was such a great video!
I've been doing the same thing, they're an easy band to forget in terms of the amount of amazing deep cuts they've got. I love the bilk of their hits, but so many of my favorite songs are ones I had never heard growing up. They're such a great band. I've also been getting deep into Keith Richards and the Xpensive winos who are also fantastic!

And as an older music listener, I’m always interested in how “young people” 😎 are interested in analog singing & playing-yes, there is more individual style & sound when people are singing/playing without auto-tune or other digital interventions. So I enjoy learning along with you from the people who “were there” give their insights for non-musicians like me and talented musicians from today who, like you, are eager to learn, evaluate & adapt those insights. With regard to the mix/panning: “It was the Sixties.”
Find the stereo remastered collection from The Beatles and listen to it with headphones or well separated room speakers. They do the same thing: Vocals and guitars are hard-panned to one side and bass and drums are hard-panned to the other. This was a technique they used to make it easier to balance the relative levels of lead vs rhythm in the mix. I’m pretty sure either George Martin or his son, Giles, has mentioned this in at least one interview. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it was a common method used across the record industry to cope with other technological limitations in recording and mixing.

The Beatles were hard panned stereo up to Rubber Soul - You haven’t heard Rubber Soul until you’ve heard the UK sixties Stereo Parlophone vinyl . I mean really isolated to a degree you won’t believe . Trust me on this - Revolver also to a degree . One must remember they were using only FOUR tracks until Pepper is two four tracks in sync. They didn’t go eight tracks until the White Album.

Being a Stones superfan, I had of course had heard all of these songs; however, your commentary brought out stuff that I hadn't even thought of or noted. Notable: the bass on the left side channel. Amazing, and thank you!
Such a great interview with a rock legend. Beggars Banquet has always been my favorite Stones album, and these guys nail the reasons why.

You guys struck gold here . BAND TIME. It’s a wonderful thing and a beautiful thing and their is something to be said about being in the studio. Playing live is a super high but a lot of musicians get more out of the studio than playing live It’s one of the best feeling ever when you can sit with 3 or 4 people and your all clicking on the same page. Writing recording

Memo From Turner was on my Walkman and then Ipod, all 3 versions. I took several friends who didn’t know each other to see Performance upon release. They all sat together, but I moved to sit alone a few rows away/behind. I don’t like when people talk to me during films so I eliminated the possibility. All my friends loved the film, but not as much as me. In the late 80s I hung out with Anita Pallenberg at her home for a few weekends when she and Marlon lived in LI.... but that’s another tale.

Another great episode. One of my favorite artist is Charlie Peacock. He's singer/songwriter/producer. He has an impressive resume and would make for a very interesting show as he's worked a wide variety of people in the business.

Can't recall where I saw it, but I know Jack is aware of XTC. I'd love it if they reacted to _anything_ from XTC, but I'd pick some of their more musically unusual tracks, e.g., "That Wave", "Me and the Wind", "Human Alchemy", "1000 Umbrellas", "River of Orchids"... you get the idea. 😊

They have plenty of musically unusual tracks, but I qualified my statement that way because they also have plenty of material that's more "sing-songy" and predictable, e.g., "Mayor of Simpleton", "Generals and Majors", "The Disappointed", "King for a Day". I think analyzing their "weird" stuff would be more interesting.
You guys should react to some tracks of "Infest The Rats Nest" by King Gizzard And The Lizzard Wizzard. It's super harsh and technically on a different level.

The stones musical innovation is just so underrated, specially by the musicians of their own era. It's become a tradition of snob pricks calling them a Pub band because they weren't snobs
The intro to "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is rock-n-roll guitar perfection.
Even their peers take potshots at them, primarily out of ignorance. McCartney dared to call them a blues band and nothing more. I felt he was horribly amiss in his analysis of the Stones, whose musical landscape possessed more layers and experimentation than most know.
@@fuchsiaswing8545 all those cheap shots just reveal some deep insecurities they were feeling at the time.
The Stones have attempted so many styles, it’s ridiculous. I don’t think anything beats the randomness of “Continental Drift” from Steel Wheels. It almost harkens back to “Can You Hear the Music” from Goats Head Soup, and that one reminds me of the randomness of Their Satanic Majesties Request.

I recently inherited a large record collection from a friend who passed away last year. I have been slowly listening to them and find myself really enjoying several of the bands from this era. I also find myself hungering for a discussion on that brief moment in the early 70s when flutes took over thw rock scene. Bands like Focus and Jethro Tull bring huge and hard rock sounds but also using flutes to add a touch of melancholy sweetness.
Burton Cummings plays flute on some Guess Who stuff as well, also in that same early 70s period. Not sure what prompted some bands to bring it out but I'm really glad they did because it brings such an interesting character to the music.
My diabetologist is a hard-core Stones-fan. I'll recommend this video to her. It made me nostalgic for my years in a band, too.

This is great. Thank you guys. You should react to some of the great collaborations which have not previously been released, such as Jimmy Page playing with The Stones (how did that happen?) on tunes such as Scarlet (Scarlet is also Jimmy's daughters name), which was released on the Goats Head Soup Deluxe - version. All time there has been Stones vs The Beatles and rivalries between bands, but really what Keith and other greats tell us, it was all just one big party of all the greats hanging together, recording, drinking whatever..

The band Tony first produced, The Broken Homes, featured guitarist Craig Ross who has gone on to work with Lenny Kravitz for the last thirty years.
When you grew up in the 60’s and 70’s you heard all the Stones songs… at least I did….
I got a big kick out of Tony mentioning “Floyd Cramer” piano licks. That guy kind of defines the Nashville sound with his “slurs” into notes.
I worked on a class project at Axis Studios in Atlanta in the 80s and there was a box of some Floyd Cramer record (assuming it was recorded there? No idea) and the guys at the studio said “lemme show you what these are for” - they then took them outside and would open one after another, pull the vinyl out and whip them towards the building next door (at a lower level due to being on a hill) to try to get them to stick in the insulation material of the roof. There were already dozens sticking out & we added a few more. If only I’d gotten a nicely composed black & white photo of it… modern art!

There’s a band called Squid I think y’all would like. Not many songs but they have a unique sound I can’t stop listening to. A sort if apocalyptic post-punk thing where the singer does this Talkijf Heads vocal thing. It’s neat, just thought I’d mention it.

Tony mentioning The Honeydogs made my day! Adam Levy of The Honeydogs continues to be one of the very very best songwriters I've ever heard. I love 10,000 Years by the Honeydogs, and I love Adam's solo record, Naubinway. But really, you can't go wrong. Adam's new band, Turn Turn Turn, is fantastic.

The lyrics of salt of the earth are just unbelievable, you see it in the smile of Mick Jagger while he is singing that its just a joke to him, he doesnt really mean what he is singing.

In my my opinion it’s impossible not to riff to any time signature if the rhythm section has run through it a couple of time. The only thing you know is when to come in,and a time to STOP . If you know the breaks 99/100 you can get through the timing . If the melody player has an idea of when to come in,and come out … BTW there is a great isolated track Nicky Hopkins piano part for Sympathy For The Devil . He put the groove in the tune. He knew how to goose the chorus .

Who played drums on Memo, Jimmy Miller?
The best, meaning the most surprising, example I know of related to works in progress being awful is the Complete Chess Chuck Berry The Early Years. Chuck is trying all different approaches. Most of them IMO not worth listening to. I asked myself why I bothered to buy it.
I realize it sounds harsh, and I'm doubting myself as I type it. But I've spent many many hours listening to complete sets and outakes in many different kinds of music and I've always found them interesting and sometimes spectacular. The Dylan "Bootleg" series is amazing and so are a lot of massive jazz boxsets of 50s jazz, when the musicians would just jam for 20 minutes a side to get paid. Other great examples are the Lester Young Commodore Sessions or his recordings with Billie Holiday. The Bear Family sets of Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe, Flat and Scruggs, and the JSP sets of Uncle Dave Macon and the Carter Family the same. Strange.
