  • Discover one of winter’s weirdest mushrooms, the drumstick truffle club fungus in the Tolypocladium genus. Tolypocladium fungi produce club-shaped cordyceps mushrooms that are common in winter in the Southeastern US.
I field identify my collection Tolypocladium longisegmentatum because of their long yellow stems and warm, light brown caps. My truffle clubs also stain black, which is a feature that shows up in several Tolypocladium species.
All species of cordyceps are part of a fungal order called the Ophiocordycipitaceae, and they parasitize a wide range of organisms, from moth larvae to Amazonian ants. Cordyceps that attack insects are called entmopathogens, and they're the most famous thanks to their medicinal value, BBC documentaries about Amazonian ants, and HBO zombie flicks.
My Tolypocladium friends parasitize inedible deer truffles (Elaphomyces granulatus). Deer truffles are covered in small grainy lumps and are yellowish inside. So grab your mushroom knife and brush, it’s time to root around for cold-weather truffles and their peculiar parasites.

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing, it's not often you can find something aside from an enoki or oyster in the winter, at least in the way of fleshy fungi, so I love seeing new ones to learn! Mush love from Illinois

I wonder if anyone else is watching this primarily because they want to hear how someone else pronounces Tolyplocladium longisegmentum? 3 cheers Anna for taking on that mouthful on a UA-cam video.

I sat and said it over and over for about 3 minutes, started the video over a couple times too because it’s such a tongue twister. But what’s a hobby without some good wizardy sounding long words?

That's it! You've done it! I'm sorry but you have become my favorite mushroom nerd. I have yet to feel that you are talking to the camera and not to us and it is a pleasure to hang out with you. In October 2022 I went into anaphylaxis due to too many Lone Star Tick bites and then eating meat, alpha- gal syndrome. Now if I return to the habitat of the ticks, and mushrooms, I will remain allergic to meat and dairy. But luckily I've found a surrogate in you. Thanks for being so personable and easy to watch. And nerdy and interesting and etc, etc,
