Over 20 years after hearing this song for the first time, I’ve been coming back here more and more as of late (December 2023). AFI helped get me through some of the darkest periods in my life. This song still hits just like it did back in high school, exactly the way it should. Looking forward to seeing them live for the first time next year.
AFI, thank you for helping me though my teenage years, and thank you for helping me reconnect with those parts of me left behind. Now I'm 31 and turning back the pages to heal my inner child /inner teen. Music has been a big part of that.
This song hits me harder than the rest. This was my anthem when I was 16. Takes me back to my life when I met my wife. Before having 2 beautiful daughters, going in the army and to Iraq and back to when life's biggest decisions were what time I was going to the party that weekend.

When I was 6 my cousin crashed at our house after an AFI show in Oakland. @@moriyokiri3229 I enjoyed the Blood album and Burials. Can't say the same for Bodies. But I stand by my comment because though I don't particularly like an album, I still respect how they stay true to themselves by making the art they want to make.
I’ve been a fan of AFI since around 2000 (holy shit that’s 2 decades now! I’m old.) I have to say, I’ve not been a big fan of their last 3-4 albums (since December Underground, really) but this song, this album, this time period is super nostalgic for me. 💖
Awesome tune. I remember hearing this on Live 105.3 Aaron Axelsen's Soundcheck. Sunday night local Bay Area/NorCal bands. Then it went into regular rotation.
I’ve never really been a fan of punk or it’s derivative forms (I’ve always been more into heavy metal) but this song and many others by Davey and Co. were the soundtrack of my youth back in the early 2000’s as a long-haired kid in his late teens getting into the alternative rock/metal scenes and rebelling. This song really connected us youth of the time, it was such a song that sent us a message that it was cool to be different and to do what you felt right to you in terms of expression and finding yourself.
I used to listen to this a lot back when I was 15. Now 11 years later the only part of the song I remembered was "The circle of rage". Somehow the way it was sung and the emotion behind Davey's voice stayed with me, despite forgetting the rest. Last month youtube recommended "Miss Murder" to me and I felt like being 15 again, going through an AFI marathon and ending up here.
This was one of the first songs from AFI I heard. No idea why, but it gripped me. While I already have one AFI tattoo, I think it's due time for another, and this song is the perfect inspiration for it.

Sometimes I end up thinking, "omg how did I even stand this?" and other times it feels sort of like I've just come home after a long time away. I'm really happy to say that AFI is a band that feels like home.

Back in the day when Davey was rockin' the devilock. He was asked to replace Michael Graves in the Misfits after MG left - and Davey had the most punk answer: "Only if Danzig asks me himself". In truth - he just cared about AFI too much for other commitments and was likely honored. But that is still a respectable and frankly, badass answer.

I first heard this song when I was 13 or so. To me, it was always about being an outsider and discovering a place where you could be yourself ("and nothing could touch us then... nothing could change us then... nothing could hurt us then...") Maybe a music club they played at (which has long been speculated) but could also be metaphorical, like a state of mind and comfort with oneself. Around this time, I was just getting into alternative / rock / metal music. I also had no interest in drinking or drugs so Davey Havok was an amazing influence for me... He gave a lot of kids the confidence to be themselves.
The new AFI is what got me into them. but I really love their older stuff. AFI is definitely one of the few actually talented bands out there. I can't wait for the new album to come out!
I think one of the last Gilman shows I went to was NOFX S&M Airlines tour and spent a great deal of time there during it's Tim Yohanon days,so I missed AFI early stuff, but I heard this on local " modern rock" radio LIVE 105 and remembering how blown away by such a melodic track and by Davey's vocals. Definitely way more radio friendly than the bands I would go to Gilman to see ( fucking Pain Of Mind era Neurosis live was INCREDIBLE!!!) ,BUT IT WAS JUST SO DAMN CATCHY and held that kinda horror vibe that I loved Samhain, the Misfits and other bands of leather pants, mesh shirts, and fat arming vocals .....peeking through devil locks. Its so crazy coming back to not only this song but this video in particular. For the longest time this was my way of listening to this song. I can't believe that was 16 years ago feels like last year still
"Why did they change?" "What happened?" Simple. They wanted to change. The band changed because that is what they wanted to do. I don't know their reasons any better than anyone else. New creative options? Boredom? Just for fun? It doesn't matter. They are artists and they do what they want. As long as people are willing to pay them for it they will continue to do whatever they want. Accept it. Why would you want the band to do something they didn't want to do anyways?
So funny to me that so- called older fans consider this a "more manly " Davey. He's wearing freaking lipstick. I think AFI had one if the worst fan bases ever in the scene. If they supposedly "sold out" then why are they less popular than back in these days? So ridiculous. I've seen this band ten times since the 90s and they still put on amazing shows. So glad they have matured and grown musically. Too bad those older fans couldn't do the same.
You understand nothing. Davey Havok was considered more masculine BEFORE this era of his career and yes they did sell the fuck out. It began during their Sing the Sorrow days and ever since their music took a steep decline in favor of attempting to appeal to a larger fan base so they could sell more records. Obviously it wasn't sustainable and ultimately an awful decision as no one gives two shits about whatever AFI does anymore because of how poor their music became. Furthermore tell me how a song like Love Like Winter or Beautiful Thieves (prime examples of them selling out) is an example of "maturing and growing musically". Don't make me fucking laugh...
Didn't you know that any band that tries to mature sells out? Just like and band that keeps the same sound is talentless. People just like to bitch and try to sound smart while doing so
hotpansy Aiden is bad ass! They are from Seattle Washington, about an hour away from me, and I have friends in the music scene along with me that know them
Sid TheFilthyBastard can't trust your opinion when you don't even know Davey's name. I heard them myself, and he sounds pretty damn close to how he used to. Obviously his voice developed with age, but he still sounds great.
am i the only one around here who doesnt give a fuck what the band does outside the music they make, as long as they sound good, like seriously i dont see why it matters

Anyone listening still 2024
Your comment is highly original. How did you come up with it?
You know it!
@@livengoodjames7406Are you always this friendly?
@@danielle_0824 I've seen this tired comment on 12 too many videos. It got stale fast.
Totes
all these years and I never knew this had a video. just goes to show you how rarely i ever looked up videos... god the memories this brings back.
10 years later still listening to this awesome song.......kinda makes feel old !!!
try 15 years later... now that makes me feel old
Try 20 years later.. this album came out in 2000 , 5th grade for me lol
AFI isnt changing. this generations music is. there for AFI is still a great and awesome band just like they always have been.
Love all their stuff. New and old. And when they come out with a new album, i'll undoubtedly like that too, because they've never let me down.
AFI de las mejores bandas..🖤🎶🎵🤘🏻
From one of the best AFI Albums and one of my all time fav songs from them!!
Amen!
John Smith Oh yay, people discussing old vs new AFI as if it's not something that hasn't been over-discussed since about 2004.
Didn't you know that any band that tries to mature sells out? Just like and band that keeps the same sound is talentless. People just like to bitch and try to sound smart while doing so
This is a masterpeace
Yo anyone know any bands that play the same "style" as AFI when they played like this? The poetic lyrics, dark image but high octane punk rock energy?
The Ruined they have an album called Cry Wolf that sounds kind of like AFI. You can hear it on Spotify or youtube
I think you should go listen to ashestoangels, they fit your description perfectly and I personally think they're great :)

aiden
hotpansy Aiden is bad ass! They are from Seattle Washington, about an hour away from me, and I have friends in the music scene along with me that know them
Thanks to come to chile guys. I came when you played this fucking amazing song.
I'm going to see them at The Phoenix in 4 days
too bad they dont sound like this anymore
Cody Norton they played this song, and it was awesome
Adam Dedo but the vocalist can't sing like this anymore
Sid TheFilthyBastard can't trust your opinion when you don't even know Davey's name. I heard them myself, and he sounds pretty damn close to how he used to. Obviously his voice developed with age, but he still sounds great.
Cody Norton I saw AFI on Sept 15, 2014 at the Hollywood Bowl. AFI sound the same. Davey hit every note.
One of their best
am i the only one around here who doesnt give a fuck what the band does outside the music they make, as long as they sound good, like seriously i dont see why it matters
Played my first show at the Phoenix. Also the first place I saw AFI!
God i miss punk rock so much and emo music lol. This was my high school years

This is the song that got me into them. I still love them, don't care what anyone says.

Up next, Insane Clown Posse
Now that escalated quickly.
