- I installed a new turbo and ruined more things in the process. The usual! I made sure to get as proper Intake Air Temp sensor installed since it's one of the key components to a standalone ecu.

Maybe the last turbo blew because of that restrictor? A journal bearing turbo should have quite a lot of oil to work properly.

I had a car come to the dyno with a restrictor flange like that on a journar bearing turbo and the turbo was done before the first full pull....
@@tsdyno Yeah, exactly. That kind of bearing is designed to "float" in oil pressure. Unlike a ball bearing that just needs some oil to keep it smooth.
You're actually not supposed to twist wires as it supposedly weakens the strands. Granted i've never had issues doing it but i just thought it was funny having to unlearn that when working on low voltage systems in factories.
depends on how much psi you're sending to that journal bearing. if it's high psi engine output, you may need a restrictor. cheap chinese journals def need restrictors.

You need to calibrate the AFR sensor in tuner studio for it to match the gauge! It will be one of the bars on the top.

Look at getting a smoke tester to help find leaks. Works on a lot of things. I even found UV smoke, with the right flashlight it makes it easier to see in the inevitable shadows.
Joel....I miss my turbo NA, this vid takes me back...but in any case, it's your video that kinda convinced me to get an E46 wagon...and to start modding it. Luckily my platform is a 320i touring w/manual 5spd (i found for $265 in Italy) LOL...let's gooooooooooo!

Check n probably need to recalibrate the ecu to the type of wideband you have. May need to manually input the parameters which is what I had to do.
You are able to change the type of wideband sensor/controller in TS. I run the Innovate LC2 and there's a setting for that. The smoke on decel is very likely valve seals, a terrible job lol

little late but if your weld with the rod doesn't look as neat as you like, go after it when it's filled with just the tungsten and no more filler rod, you're able to change the way the fusion looks with how neat that part is after
When I was tuning my FD on a power fc my aem wideband and tuning software would disagree on AFR's in the begining. I beefed up the sensor ground and the logging ground and ensured the polymeric equation that was input into my software was correct. After doing that my gauge and laptop agreed, and I was logging at a much higher quality. I also ran into an issue with the serial to USB adapters lol. I went through three before I foundone that was long enough and would work with my devices.

When calibrating the AFR gauge in tuner studio, it's best to use the linear voltage values instead of selecting a preset. That will eliminate any variation between the gauge and what's being read on tuner studio.

Definitely drill out that restrictor I’ve seen it on forums somewhere I can’t remember, also make sure your afr is grounded to the same as ecu if it gets it anywhere else it doesn’t work you can try the ground distributor under the brake booster or the one on the block if that doesn’t work I’ve also seen people use the ground pin on the ecu
My boy totaled that bung, I saw 25% of it melt away on the first tack 😭😭
Calibrate the afr in the ecu. Same place you calibrated the tps
“C-Clips!” 😂 I put a magnet on them now when I try to remove one. Don’t ever try to adjust your waste gate actuator arm in a parking lot away from home…😂

the most likely culprit for the exhaust smoke is your oil drain. get rid of that AN fitting and just run a 7/8" line (or whatever the largest you can get/fit) straight into the pan.
to test for boost leaks, build a coupler onto your turbo with a tire valve siliconed into it. you can fit a piece of a pvc coupler into a 2.5" ( or whatever your turbo inlet is) coupler with a t-clamp and another for your turbo end. pressurize it and watch the boost gauge pressure. it will drop about 1 psi per 2-3 seconds, that's normal. anything higher than that and you def have leaks. most you will hear, but a spray bottle with some soapy water can help locate smaller leaks.

Tighten the wastergate rod, that should up the boost. Just watch out for boost creep

That restrictor don't look right, and I wouldn't expect that turbo to last long... It's not unexpected to have A restrictor on a journal bearing, especially chinese units that would leak with too much oil pressure, but that's restricting a lot for a turbo that relies on a floating bearing...
