- In this video, clinical exercise physiologist Nick Pratap goes over the medication amlodipine. He goes over it's mechanism of action, who this medication is commonly prescribed to, it's side effects and it's effects on exercise.
I took this medication and ended up not being able to get my shoes on and swelling in my whole body. Here’s the kicker. My doctor said “it must be the weather”. Needless to say,I threw the medication out and was back to normal within a week. I do my. Own research now before I take any medications.
Hi, may I talk to you, I need some advice
I am now in my second week of weaning off of this medication. I started experiencing numbness in my hands, feet, and face. I also developed an itchy rash on my hands. Thank goodness I’m now fasting and feel much better! I do 18/6.
Your right in all you say!! My legs have adema in them feet to!
I really appreciate this information.
Great ..very clear and useful info ..thank you ..
Thank you, very clear and precise.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you sir.
Thank You very much
Thank you!

🤔 I've been taking it for over a year now two times a day in a compound with benazepril 5/20 and had NO problems with it thank you I am 74
I hike the mountains once a week at elevations between 5000-8000 feet. I found not taking Amlodipine the night before makes the climbs much easier. Go back to my meds after returning from hike (I also take Tamsulosin which has some similar side effects). I'm 75 and counting...
Thank you for your helpful information .
I have been on Amlodipine for 10 years 10 milligram l am 94 quite healthy. Only pill l am on. About a year ago l started getting a pain in my, legs l have been to a vascular surgeon 3 times and still not sure what the problem is They did a one hour ultrasound I am slim build slim legs and Had my family doctor change the medication to 5 mil I take my BP daily and even now it’ very good Now l don’t know if being on a lower dosage made a difference I can walk for 15 minutes Then l can hardly make it home I have always exercised l love it l am wondering if that pill was too strong 😊l,also get that heaviness when l climb up any stairs.
I should mention my diet is excellent I wish l could get help from someone else. Thank you
For a patient on Amlodipine add self went to 1 or 2 times a day perceived 5mg . The fatigue and pain in my joints reduce when self on 2x a day 1/2 dose . There is not enough history of information on lifestyles and diet on amlodipine . Millions need tom know when taking on what diet increases or decreased side effects . Respectfully to doctors there only so much they can research on .
Thank you for this video!
Can you do a similar one but with Labetalol, a beta blocker? Since beta blockers are known to make you gain weight....I am curious if it is even possible to lose weight while on a low dose beta blocker? Are my workouts a waste of time? I do feel major fatigue often, but if I manage to push through to exercise anyway, will the body allow me to lose weight while on a beta blocker?
Thank you so much for the information!
I made a video on this and you can find it on my channel! Ive attached the link below:

@@nextgenrehab Thank you so much! I will check it out!!
I lost a lot of weight while on a beta blocker. It’s about how many calories you consume vs burn. That’s it. You can increase how many calories you burn by gaining muscle and/or doing cardio. Or you can eat less. It’s that simple.
If a medication makes you burn less calories, then do one of those two things to offset it.
@nextgenrehab would you recommend taking this medicine before or after working out and why?
This would be a question for your doctor. Many physicians will recommend the medication in the morning so the effects of lowering blood pressure last throughout the day (including while exercising).
What about Cardio like sprinting?
There is no concern with sprinting unless you have been advised by your doctor not to. Continue to monitor for symptoms like dizziness or feeling lightheaded. If you are just starting out, you can start with intervals (short sprints of 10-15 seconds followed by a 1min walk for recovery). Follow this pattern for 15-20 min a few times a week. You can gradually build up your sprint time as you progress.
I’m prescribed this, would magnesium be a safer option?
Magnesium would not have the same impact to lower your blood pressure.
I take 10mg with 20mg Lisinopril, and the only side effects is fatigue but that has slowly faded. How to calm down white coat anxiety before blood pressure testing would help. Thank you
Here is a technique I have patients try to help reduce anxiety before having their blood pressure taken. Try this for a few minutes, then take your blood pressure.

@@nextgenrehab thank you
Me too
Hibiscus Tea. Sorted. 1 a day
Hello Nick. Is it possible to be taken off this medication completely without being placed on another?
It depends on your medical history. If you are someone with high blood pressure, then you most likely will need to be on a medication. If your blood pressure is controlled, your doctor may be able to take you off the medication. They may ask you to come off the medication and monitor for a period of time. I would advise you to speak with your family doctor.
@@nextgenrehab Thank you. I appreciate the response.
Can it raise ck levels?
@@franklinstroud3389 No it cannot
@@nextgenrehab Thank you. You rock
I also take hydrasaline & olmesartan. Always feel lightheaded & tired. BP not always under control. Do this mix well together
If your finding increase in fatigue and lightheadedness, follow up with your doctor or pharmacist as the medication dose may need to be changed.
It also causes your blood vessels to rupture. Leading to blood vessel ablation. This apparently from standing on your feet/legs all day or using your arms excessively. Just keep that in mind. You see older folks with red or brown mottling on their legs or arms. That is the cause of it. They will also be the people wearing compression hose or sleeves.
Exactly, it is all over my legs below the knee. Not on my arms but on my legs
I am also going through same situation. What can be done
Apparently you have to have a vien ablation. That is if your health insurance pre-qualifies the operation. And then you have to be ready for a weird feeling as they kill off the views. Not painful just a weird heat and then you have to wear full leg support hose for a month or so. After then if your lower leg has the vein damage as long as your standing or being active; you wear support hose. For life. If your body part that's affected after or before and you get jolts you can have them give you mild anti-seizure meds too. This sometimes occurs, but it doesn't last. Sory
88 years old 2 years now
Yep, same with me. And, my insurance only would pay for one leg to be fixed via ablation. I believe that suppresses the further coloration (blood leakage)
I have been taking prescribed amlodipine for a couple months, and have started to get cramps without any reasons in my feet or from my ankle to muscles on my shin bone and while driving car number of times I got cramps on muscles on top my shin bone to ankle myscle causing difficulty whilst driving car. Can you tell me why I'm getting cramps?
Have a chat with your doctor to see if it's related to the medication. You may be dehydrated or deficient in electrolytes. Based on your medical history, your doctor can prescribed certain supplements like magnesium to help with the the muscle cramps.
Thanks, I'll get in touch with my doctor
How can you exercise when dizzy ? All you do is fall over
If you do feel regular dizziness with exercise, you should not continue, especially if it's due to medication. Instead, talk with your physician to identify what's causing the dizziness, and if it is the medication, they will adjust the medication type/dose accordingly.
Hi I will eat amlodipin after exercise plz reply me which time I will eat amlodipin
Your family doctor will be able to advise you when to take your amlodipine.
If your blood pressure becames 120/70 can you stop the medicine
This would be a question to ask your doctor. Depending on your medical history, they can better address what the ideal blood pressure range would be for you and if you can come off the medication.
Went is the right time to take this medication. I'm in lozartan before taking this medication. I don't wsnt to take this medication together. Problably one in the morning and the other one late evening.
I've been this for 2 years and cannot lose weight 😳
I would speak with your family doctor to see if it's related to your health history and medications, or if being put on an exercise and nutrition plan can help with this.
I was put on this without my knowledge by a hospitalist who doesn't know me or my history. My gums swelled up.
I stopped taking it
Im on 12.5 Ramipril. I don't truck witj not finding the source of my high bp and just willy nilly thtowing drugs at it.
My
it's effects !! You mean ' its effects' ?
Ok word police.😄
You’re doing way too much! Mind your business and HUSH
Can you take a pre workout stimulant supplement while on Amlodipine?
For strength training.
Thank you
The pre-workout acts as a stimulant increasing both heart rate and blood pressure. You should speak with your family doctor, and based on your medical history, they can better advise whether or not to take the pre-workout.
No
Thank you
