    I’m a retired PO (25 years on the street), I own 4 Glocks, 3 S&W’s, a P365, and several Ruger’s . . . I’m not saying the GX4 is a better gun than the others, but for self defense it will do the job just as the others will, but for the price you just can’t beat this gun, it works and I trust it

      Many reports have been very positive on the GX4, though there have also been a number of problems with individual guns. My G3c is a gun I would (and do) trust. This particular GX4, however.....

      The gx4 is having major problems that Taurus is refusing to fix. The g3 is working but NOT the gx4, and you should stay far away as will be lawsuits. There are major problems with the g4 trigger and slide reset. Which will cause a dead trigger and accident discharge if slide is slapped back into battery. There's videos of a guy almost shooting his toe off after the dead trigger and slide doesn't reset and when slapped the gun fires. And Taurus is refusing this is happening. Yet many videos prove it is. Sig p365 admitted were problems and fixed them on 1st gen. Taurus is not.

    One more thing, I was involved in 4 shooting in my 25 years as a PO, every one of those was 15 yards or closer, these small defense guns “are not 50 yard shooters”, they are meant for a defensive weapon to save your life when that moment comes and the danger is in front of you . . . . By the way if you shoot someone 40 to 50 yards away (half a football field) your most likely going to end up in jail, shooting someone 50 yards away is not self defense

      Dave, thanks again for commenting. And thank you for your service. I had a rewarding 38-year law enforcement career and I can agree fully with your comments. Having said (written) that, my experience and my personal belief are that it doesn't take much to make an accurate gun. The idea of "minute of torso" accuracy at 15 feet will work most of the time on the static range. But personally, if a gun can't reliably hit an IPSC "C" Zone at 50 yards under controlled conditions, it isn't accurate enough for me to rely on under stress. It would be the rare case for a non-LE defender to have to defend his or her life at distances greater than 25 yards, or even 15 yards, but the possibility does exist. And with today's manufacturing capability, there is no excuse for a pistol that can't hold "C" Zone accuracy at 50 yards. If it can't, I have to wonder about the whole manufacturing process and what else may show up 10,000 or so rounds later. (I know, I know - most owners of sub-$500 guns will never fire 1,000 rounds, let alone 10,000 rounds, which also means they aren't well trained and don't practice.) Sorry, but my personal standards may be higher than many folks.

      @@RidersRange most people who buy budget guns do so for the fact they want a firearm to defend their life and or family's lives. If they spend $350 for a firearm, chances are finances play a role in their selection.
      To compare your 38 years of training and the ability to shoot 10,000 rounds to a single person, maybe working two jobs to make ends meet, shooting 1,000 rounds as 'under trained' is disengenerous at best.
      Maybe, next time encourage those people who shoot far less than you, to try and increase their abililities with the minimal resources they have.

      Dave Mac I hope you are not implying that if someone is shooting at me 40 or 50 yards away I can't return fire to defend myself because its more than 10 yards. Distance does not matter when you are being shot at.

      Some folks have stated issue with the Safety Trigger, when depressed and not resetting, as though the internal spring (mechanism) were disengaged or perhaps missing. I purchased my new Taurus GX4 a month ago, and the Safety Trigger works as it should (Spring loaded). I wonder if the first batch of units sold with this issue. I purchased an extension for the 11-Rd mag and now my pinky is no longer w/out a home. Also replaced the stock front white-dot sight with the Ameriglo Front Night Sight. In addition to the above, I purchased a custom fitted IWB Carbon w/Leather backing Holster. What I've noticed is that the GX4 stock serrated rear sight has sharp end-corners on its backside (shooter's face side), hence when holstered in the IWB and located in appendix area, the rear sight sharp corner digs into my side when seated, annoying, but then if the leather backing/sheath were a little higher (hence between the rear sight and my flesh), then maybe all would be good. Might upgrade the rear stock sight. Shoots on point, and very confident with its size and performance. Anyway, very happy with my GX4

    First off I am not a Taurus hater. I have a Tx22 that I actually like better than my PPQ 22. I am not a fanboy of any specific brand of handguns but I do love my P365 and PPQ 9mm. I love these two because they both fit ME and are reliable and accurate for me. I recently (Dec.9th 2022) picked up the GX4 and put 150 rounds of blazer brass 115 grain full metal jacket through it. Best description of my experience is I loved the feel of it and the trigger. First three shots were high and left. So excited to shoot it didn’t bother to look at the rear sights other than to shoot. Unfortunately my experience went down hill quick when it started exhibiting the dead trigger syndrome. Thankfully I registered my gx4 almost immediately and will be sending it in to Taurus noting the issues it is having. I didn’t purchase it based on price. I purchased it because I liked the looks and feel in my hand. I hope Taurus steps up because I really want to love this gun. I have to say after 40 plus years this is the first time a gun has failed me right out of the gate. Wish me luck.

    Luckily, I never even heard of the GX4 until about a year after it came out. So I hoped when I bought mine that Taurus had fixed the early issues that some reviewers pointed out. And so far it has been a winner for me. Absolutely no issues with the sights or trigger and so far it functions perfectly. I'm very happy with it. I don't have a trigger pull gauge, but the trigger feels like it breaks at between 5 and 6 lbs. And with no external safety, I'm happy with that.

    I get it. You love Sig, but you leave out that the P365 had one of, if not the most disastrous launches In modern gun history. I understand Taurus did a shitty job on their sights, but you leave out striker breakage and catastrophic failures in which every P365 in the first 2 batches had to go back to Sig. The consumer should not be the beta tester for pistols. It's a good video and I enjoy your channel, you should however be thorough and state the problems the Sig has as well. And downplaying the trigger safety on carry guns didn't play well either. Just my 2 cents. Please keep up the good work.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  3 роки тому +4

      Mark, thank you very much for watching and commenting. I agree that the Sig launch of the 365 didn't go well, though it was nowhere near as bad as the Remington launch of the R51. (Too many gun makers seem to be rushing new designs to market these days.) My point was to compare what is currently available. I also offered that my complaints were limited to the sample GX4 that I had and are not necessarily indicative of all of those GX4 pistols, or even all Taurus pistols in general, and that I have had good experiences with many other Taurus models.
      As to the trigger "safety", too many folks seem to be lulled into a false sense of security and think of it as an actual mechanical safety, rather than just what it is: a drop safety and a device to keep the trigger from being pulled when something hits the side of the trigger. (Here is a quote from Glock's website: "The trigger safety is designed to prevent the pistol from firing if it’s dropped or if the trigger is subjected to any pressure that isn’t a direct firing pull.") Any object that puts pressure against the front of the trigger defeats that "safety", unlike the mechanical safeties on other guns, such as the 1911 design, Taurus G3c, optional on some Sig P365 models, and many, many other guns. Most folks don't stop to think that most modern striker-fired guns (Kahr and a couple others being the exception) are anywhere from 85% to 100% cocked without any user-operable mechanical safety. Anything that moves the trigger to the rear can make the gun go off. Almost like carrying a cocked revolver, which I bet most folks wouldn't do, even if the revolver had a "trigger safety" on it.
      I carried a Glock of one model or another on duty for 24 years, without incident, and wouldn't hesitate to carry one today if I didn't have better options. But I'll still stand by my position that any "trigger safety" doesn't provide the same level of protection as does a true mechanical safety that is independent of the trigger. That's why I am a real fan of the 1911 platform with a thumb safety AND a grip safety. (Well, that and other reasons.)
      Sorry for the long answer, but you know from my videos that I have a tendency to go into detail.

    NOTE: My GX4 is not part of the recall.
    I bought my GX4 for my NEW EDC in June 2021 and have had 0, No, issues to this date and have run over 2900 rounds.
    Wasn't looking for a firearm that was Optics ready or had a 'rail'.
    I wanted a small 9mm that would be the best for self defense, concealment, yet have quality and be dependable. I wasn't going to be in any shooting competition with the GX4 as I have other firearms for that.
    Purchased the GX4 at my local Scheels and got the last one in stock at that time - 329.00.
    Received the pinky extensions (2) for the two 11 rd mags that were included and that completed the grip for me....good to go with my pinky on board.
    Of course my 13 rd mag comes with the extension.
    That's all I needed to do to get the GX4 the way I wanted it on my hip...or wherever I carry it.
    Recently upgraded to the Tru-Glow sights which is a great add-on over the factory sights.
    Also have now a Viridian Red Laser which was an easy mount not having a rail.
    Added this weekend the Hogue HandALL Beavertail Grip Sleeve specifically for the GX4 and GX4XL.
    Do some have issues, sure they do. Did some Shield Plus have issues? Did the Sig P365 have any issues? Did the Glock 42 or 43 have issues? It’s a big yes to all.

I also have a 13 round mag from, Academy Sport to use a my back mag while using the short mag for conceal purposes. My first time at the rang with the gun was less than spectacular, but that may have been more to the lack of shooting because the ammo issues we are having now. I did change it over to Ameriglow sights and will try it out tomorrow, I also order concealment holster on order with a claw attachment which I should get Saturday or Monday. GX4 trigger has a very distinct wall and a short reset. I put 100 rounds thru it immediately at pickup and it had no problems with 115 gr American Eagle. I'm going to carry it via iwb holster. I alternate it with a Springfield Mod 2 running a techna clip, and both disappear under my shirt so I can't complain. More rounds been thru the Mod 2, so it's still my primary.

    What's the good reason for not wanting to put your index finger of your opposite hand on the front of the trigger guard? You mentioned that it was an 80's style of shooting. Which makes sense for me since the early 80's is when I learned to shoot.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  3 роки тому +2

      William, the "theory" behind the finger on the front of the trigger guard was to help control recoil. If done correctly on a properly shaped trigger guard, it may have some benefits (look at Jerry and Lena Miculek).
      However (there is always a "however"), it can actually be detrimental to accuracy and follow-up shots for many (most?) people. There have been several good videos on grip from the Warrior Poet Society, Patrick E. Kelly, Wilson Combat with Masaad Ayoob, Bob Vogel, TheHubleMarksman, and others, and rarely do many of the top shooters recommend the index finger of the support hand on the front of the trigger guard. Of those who do use that method, there are some very important considerations. So, it is not recommended for most shooters.

      @@bv2542 Here is the scoop with the GX4. I sent mine back to Taurus. Got it back in less than 3 weeks. According to the warranty repair sheet. "Replaced trigger assembly and rear support".. The customer service rep said this was a problem with some of the GX4 pistols that left the factory, so they get right on it. Since I got mine back I have put about 200 rounds of different FMJ and 40 rounds of HST through it. ZERO malfunctions. Shoots great! And to point of aim. I ordered the Ameriglo front sight blade and put it on in minutes. Fantastic pocket 9. On today's polymer NON 1911 pistols, the whole polishing the feed ramp and certain types of ammo being the problem is hardly ever the issue. Bad magazines can surely be an issue. Wasn't looking for a firearm that was Red Dot Optics ready or had a 'rail'.
    I wanted a small 9mm that would be the best for self defense, concealment, yet have quality and be dependable.
    I wasn't going to be in any shooting competition with the GX4 as I have other firearms for that.
    Purchased the GX4 at my local Scheels and got the last one in stock at that time.
    329.00
    Put the Amerigo Glow Dot front sight on and a big+ over the white factory front sight.

    Received the pinky extentions (2) for the two 11 rd mags that were included and that completed the grip for me....good to go with my pinky on board.

      As I've replied many, many times in the past, if you only practice at the statistically "average" defensive distances, you will never know how you and your gun will perform at greater distances, should the need arise. (Think Greenwood Mall in Indiana last summer. I've read reports that the civilian who stopped the mass shooting got 8 out of 10 hits at distances up to 41 yards.) But if you regularly practice with your carry gun at greater distances - 25 yards or more - you will have much greater competence and confidence at those statistically "average" distances. Gotta say, my GX4 is accurate at 15 yards. I can keep a group the size of the palm of my hand at that distance. The key is to practice “aiming small, missing small”. Both guns are good for what they are - micro subcompact pistols.
      I have well over 1000 rounds through mine, and it’s broken in nicely. Trigger pull is decent, i.e., about the same as the p365. Felt recoil is also about the same, but the grip contour of the GX4 makes it easier to shoot without feeling like it’s getting away from you.

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  2 роки тому +6

      @Gary Brown, first, I want to thank you for watching. Then I need to clarify a couple issues. I shoot almost every gun at distances out to 50 yards because I want to know the practical limits of each gun in my hands, and some work better than others at that distance. If I only shoot defensive guns at the "statistical" defensive distances of 3, 5, or 7 yards, that's all I know I can do with that gun. I don't plan to have to engage a criminal at Greenwood Mall distances, but I need to know whether or not a gun in my hands CAN do that. So, if I know how I can perform with a gun at 50 yards, I KNOW how I can perform with that gun at a closer distance.
      As to Sig and Taurus, I haven't sold my soul to any manufacturer, let alone to Sig. (I own far more Glocks and Kimbers than Sigs and I own several Taurus pistols.) And I often carry my Taurus G3c, so I can't hate it, nor can I doubt its reliability. That particular GX4 didn't work well for me, but it's a sample of one. That certainly doesn't mean all Taurus pistols are bad. It doesn't even mean that all GX4 pistols are bad for everyone.
      So, here's a challenge to you - and everyone who owns a handgun: Develop your skill so that you can accurately shoot at distances far greater than the "statistical" defensive distances and do most of your practice at very small targets at least 15 yards away (the farther the better) and you will find you have more confidence in your firearm and in your personal skill level.
      Again, thank you for watching and adding your perspective.

    LOL The GX4 is as accurate as any other. The sight moving is a sight problem, not a gun accuracy problem. If you weren't afraid of the GX4 being a better gun than your beloved 365 you would either change the rear sight, or loctite it in place. Many have done so with success. Then you say you only have about 100 rounds through it. lol No wonder you are more accurate with your 365. You are also the only one I have EVER heard say the 365 trigger is the better trigger between the two. You don't have to be a fan of the Taurus, but you should at least be honest. I would also have to raise the BS flag on all your triggers breaking at sub 4 lb. pulls. Again, you would have ALL unicorn guns if that were actually true. Might want to calibrate your gauge. lol

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  2 роки тому +1

      Bob, thank you for watching, commenting, and calling out what you initially perceive as BS. I'll address your comments, and I did stress throughout the review that my opinion is on THAT particular early sample T&E gun and doesn't necessarily reflect ALL GX4 pistols:
      - Sights: This particular GX4 is a T&E gun that another channel loaned to me, so I wasn't about to change the sights or secure the rear sight. I'm not the only one to have an issue with the GX4 sights, so it would have been disingenuous to not mention the issue. But I also mentioned that the sight was the issue, not inherent accuracy.
      - Taurus disparaging: I actually had a lot of good things to say about the GX4. If you have watched my reviews of other Taurus guns, you would have seen that I praise Taurus when praise is due, and in the video I said that I trust and carry the G3c.
      - As to my limited trigger time: You are correct that I didn't have a lot of time with it (it was on loan to me for a very short time). I agree that I probably could have been more accurate with that gun if I had more range time with it, AND if the sight issue was corrected.
      - Trigger: I use a Wheeler electronic gauge what has the factory calibration paper with it and I periodically check it against my RCBS spring trigger gauge, so I trust the accuracy of my Wheeler gauge. The GX4, like almost all guns other than 1911-style guns, has a pivoting trigger. Simple physics says that the farther the measuring point is from the pivot point, the less effort it takes to move the trigger. I run all straight and slightly curved triggers with my finger at the bottom of the trigger, so that's where I take my measurements. Those who measure closer to the fulcrum point will naturally get a higher reading. And though I said I personally like the trigger on MY P365, I said the trigger on the Gx4 was lighter than the Sig and it was actually smoother.
      I hope that addresses your initial perceptions. And again, thank you for watching and for commenting.

There are major problems with the gx4 trigger and slide reset. Which will cause a dead trigger and accident discharge if slide is slapped back into battery gun will fire. There's videos of a guy almost shooting his toe off after the dead trigger and slide doesn't reset and when slapped the gun fires. And Taurus is refusing this is happening. The reply from Taurus CEO said "It's a tolerance stack on the trigger bar. We tested over 2000 units we had in inventory and very very few exhibited the problem. Unfortunately yours did. So we've addressed it in our production." Looks to me like Taurus admitted there was a tolerance issue with their gun, and fixed it. It is funny to me that nobody thinks Sig is garbage, and pretty much everything they introduced in the last 15 years has had recalls. And the 365 had a lot more than a single part tolerance issue. They were having strikers and extractors break, the were having barrel crowns horribly mis-cut, they had magazine issues.
