- Radiator air purge video. I took the coolant out of the overflow tank and put it into the radiator and topped off the radiator with coolant. Started up the car, lots of bubbles. Radiator fan kicks on 27 minutes after i start the car, and then kicks off a few seconds later.

Que jodido eso, yo tengo un Civic y tengo miedo que sea el empaque, en mi país arreglar eso es caro porque hay que mandar a rectificar la cabeza y si es mucho el block también. A mí me ha estado tirando el coolant un par de veces cuando quitó el tapón del radiador estando el auto apagado con unos dos o tres días sin uso, eso es lo raro, solo me lo bota estando frío, caliente no, y el auto no calienta tampoco, ni se ve aceite en el depósito del agua ni tampoco se ve coolant cuando uno quita la tapa de aceite de la cabeza para ver por ahí. No se ve un consumo de coolant en el depósito, una vez me consumió casi todo, pero tenía varias veces que había botado seguro lleno otra vez porque estaba vacío, después de ahí no volvió a hacer eso, tengo ganas de llevarlo a hacer una prueba de compresión de los cilindros para descartar empaque soplado 😩😑😓
Faulty radiator cap. When engine cools down, the vacuum will suck the water through the cap. Bubbles are the water boiling.
You know what i was thinking when the fan kicked in the coolant was acting normal so maybe we could just run a switch to the fan going to the dash and have it on because a lot of people with fast cars do that it keeps the fans on and works really well

Usually takes close to 30 Mins in burping out your coolant. This is normal.
I have the exact same problem with my 2004 Honda Civic, coolant was drawn into the reservoir, bubbles in the radiator, but no overheat, no oil in radiator or milky oil. Thanks for the video, will have my car check tomorrow!

Sahil Sharma I had to went though all the diagnosis suspecting it was a bad radiator. But it wasn't. It was the leaky head gasket that caused this. The pressure air that causes the bubbles is leaking from combustion chamber. It is is hard to tell cuz it doesn't make the coolant bad or anything, but it is why! Have your head gasket changed and don't waste money on any other things. Does your car overheat?
Not even once my car shows the sign of overheating. The radiator runs out of coolant. The coolant gets accumulated in the reservoir tank and overflows from there. I had got the head gasket changed 6 months ago; I dont think it could blow out this soon... wait, there's one more thing... I faced this problem around 15 days ago and got the radiator cleaned -the problem vanished completely. But now after 15 days, it's coming again. Had it been the blown head gasket, the problem wouldn't go away by getting the radiator cleaned. And I would like to mention that the car does not overheat. Although the heat indicator blinks, which means low coolant level but I never saw it coming on.
Coolant got accumulated to the reservoir, that sounds like a blown head gasket to me. Cleaning the radiator could temporarily ease the issue down because the coolant can flow and cool down better. The hotter the coolant, the more pressure built up, the more coolant get pushed to the reservoir. So, reducing the heat of coolant like not turning on AC or cleaning radiator are really just temporary solution.

I have 2004 civic. Bought it 3 years ago. Same issue with coolant overflow. Head gasket was replaced. Now three years and 80,000 miles later....same thing. This time around I will drive her to junkyard. Not worth the money to fix head gasket. I will miss my 2004 Si (sedan). Thanks for Video.

A cone coffee filter in your funnel will catch those little chunks
well i did have that same problem an was over heating a little till i get vex an change my thermostat an my radiator cap an problem solve at one point i thought i blow head gasket

wondering why air was coming out of a cold engine & then kept coming out 27 minutes later. Reservoir/overflow doesn't turn black for no reason. that's exhaust gas sticking to the edge of the bottle.
You should have cleaned out the overflow tank. All that dirt is likely from rotting water pump. Park Honda 4 cyl and others on a steep grade, front end high. Remove top rad hose at engine and fill engine to the max, then with tight fitting funnel add more coolant with engine running.
Squeeze hoses to help remove air pockets. Hoses should be same temp then you know water pump and thermostat are OK.
I only have my 4-1 headers atm, maybe I'll wait for so no more noise complaints

Should try squeezing the main tube you have ther see if u can remove some of the air but make sure cap is back on before you do.that
So, instead of taking the radiator cap off and filled it as it drains, can you disconnected the holes from the overflow tank and use that line for the air bobbles to escape into the air so it wouldn't be too messy? Would this method works as well? just curious. Good job thought.
The bubbling is air escaping from the cooling system. When the air leaves, the coolant should take it's place and the coolant level will drop accordingly requiring you to fill it with more coolant. You want to keep the coolant level as high as possible because air always travels to the high spot in a closed system. The bubbling should stop eventually when all air is purged from the system. The fact he had continuous bubbling is the sign of a leak.

i also having the same problem...mine honda civic fd 2008 k20 engine.......whn ever i step on throttle around 140kmh/200kmh coolant wiil be push out to reservior tank......already check by changing thermostate and water pump was good condition....no overheating...fan running good timing.....temperature indicator normal......no milky stain in enghine...no leaking in any of the hose.......radiator cap changed...but still same.....mechanic also confused and ask me to try service radiator tank..
Gabriel red ...Hi could be combustion gasses pushing the bubbles and water out so it could be the head gasket, which is common in old hondas, quick fix would be Rad-seal. If your in the UK as I am you’d get Steel Seal at Halfords

Don't forget that the block can get hot enough to boil water. Boiling water cause steam, steam is bubbles. Good video and explanation anyway. Sorry to hear about the head gasket :(

You have an air leak somewhere. Bad hose or bad gasket. Also could be cracked radiator.
All I do is fill the radiator slowly and keep squeezing then hoses and keep adding water. Once the water level doesn't change anymore, I start the car and let it idle. I then I add the last bit as the level drops slightly. Works for me every time.
Was it milky inside the oil cap? Mine is doing the thing oil is clean dipstick is clean Valve train looks clean

best way to get air bubbles out of ya cooling system after a coolant change is replace the coolant to say 3/4 full and get a tall funnel (tall enuff that the top of the funnel is higher then the heater core)and cut the funnel tip so sit it fits tightly into the filler neck of the rad and start to add collant with the cars nose slightly higher then rear. Super easy few minutes and all the air will be gone when ya see no bubbles coming up thru the funnel.

Hi ~ You MAY Want to ELEVATE one end of your Car so NO AIR [bubbles are] is TRAPPED In the Engine. This way Water is Circulating ALL AROUND the Block. peace ~

The bubbles didn't stop. The bubbles should have been all purged out. However the head gasket had a leak so exhaust was getting pushed into the coolant, and bubbles its way out.
Noob here. Around 13:48 & 14:20 when the level of coolant was decreasing quite a bit. Would that inadvertently cause air to go back into the system?
Nope...Because when you add more coolant, the air bubbles will always go UP..air has to escape somewhere..with the radiator cap off the air can escape.

Followup: The headgasket was blown. Coolent was leaking into the cylinder. No coolent was present in the oil. I ended up not fixing it. Good luck to all who have this same problem. May I suggest a new head or resurface the head as it's probably warped if you have this issue.

Why the coolant level in radiator dropped when the fan kicked in is that normal ?
When the coolent gets hot (~185 F) the thermostat will open and this can release air bubbles that were trapped in the system, which would make the level drop. The fan kicks on when the system gets hot too.
Its normal when doing a coolant purge to remove bubbles, but not normal otherwise.

What was the case with your car? How did you fix the issue?
do some re-torque head bolts perhaps some bolts are overtightened.. thermal expansions are visible to your Cylinder head..

a leak should be obvious most of the time, but sometimes there are pin hole leaks. Inspect the radiator and surrounding area thoroughly. If there is a leak there will be signs of it.

Next I have been having the same DAMN problem now for months! I add coolant on a daily basis and its frustrating! I can't go anywhere, except the near by grocery store!
I've replaced quit a few parts on alteady as well! 👿 Damn Honda's are suppose to be extremely RELIABLE VEHICLE'S! NOT deal with these many headaches!

Yes - leave the heat running with the fan on low in the cab. While you are waiting for the fan to come on, squeeze the upper radiator hose frequently - this will help purge the air system. Also, you can hold the throttle at about 2k rpm for a few seconds then let it return to idle. Also blipping the throttle will help burp the system. Honda's have an electric cooling fan right behind the radiator. With the car running at idle while you do this, it should take them less than twenty minutes to start running. When they do you should be at operating temp. The upper radiator hose, along with everything else should be hot and you should have heat in the cab.
You need to find out where the coolant is going so you diagnose the problem yourself and not get taken for a ride by a mechanic. Leaks should be obvious. Check the oil. Is it muddy looking? Is it blowing white smoke? What does the coolant look like in the overflow tank? If you are adding coolant daily it should look new. If it looks brown there might be exhaust gases leaking into it. Auto part stores sell a kit to test for this. These are signs of head gasket failure. You will also notice a loss if power.
Hope you get it sorted out. I can recommend some videos and articles that will better help you understand the cooling system so you diagnose the problems you have. Good luck.

Get some small shaped irregular stones, take your overflow bottle off. Seal all
all pipe connections with heavy plastic and elastic bands. Add the small stones, dish washer soap, hot water, and fir cap. Swirl and shake till all sides in the bottle are lean. Repeat several times and your bottle will look like new..
Table salt and cold water works better.
I have leaks off and on. I cannot find the origins. I'm a 3rd class diyer but this is complicated work so I'm taking it in to the garage that replaced my rad 4 1/2 years ago. They have pressure testers and a joist and the knowledge I font. I figure $400 bill! But, it had to be done.

Destroyed my radiator and thermostat a bunch of white rocks was clogged inside. Don't use Blue Devil learned the hard way.
Cooling system works under certain pressure. Which is provided by closing radiator cap. Without radiator cap you cannot stop boiling and losing coolant level.cap retain steam and coolant into the system unless excessive pressure produce. Cap valve releases excessive pressure to reservior.

Medardo Herrera go pull the head, see if the head gasket is blown. If so, check the head for warping and replace the head gasket. Or replace the entire head. Good luck.

I tried the head gasket sealer before this video but it did not work. Maybe because exhaust was pushing into the coolant.
@hondacivichybrid I tryed the sealant and had to replace my new radiator and it started leaking from my water pump that was just replaced about 6 months ago. Alot of white rocks like was clogged all thur the system. Pathetic. Use at your own risk. Blue devil sucks

okay with all those bubbles and yet the coolant level isnt dropping as the bubble come out; i would say you have leak in your radiator or head gasket. cause from what i see its not good. plus the engines idle did not sound healthy. just my opinion.

my level doesn't drop when air bubbles come out either and I don't loose any coolant and my temp never goes above 200 ℉
