- It’s hard to get air out of the cooling system, but this special funnel brings the liquid to the highest point of the engine where the air can freely be worked out. There are other ways to do this, but this funnel is extremely convenient.

You should have waited till it cooled before taking the funnel off. As the coolant cools, it shrinks and lowers the level. The funnel keeps adding coolant and keeps it the correct level for the system.

I thought this was right, but then I came to the conclusion that no, you don't need to wait. Why? When you put the cap on, the level at the radiator will be at the top, no air is gonna enter.
You close the system with the cap. It will cool down and shrink yes, but will pull from the expansion tank, as it will create a vacuum. The level in the expansion tank will get lower so, the expansion tank CANNOT be empty during this process.

Most important is turn the heat at max so the coolant recirculate
You should turn the heat ON so that it allows the coolant to circulate thru the heater core

@@Mary-80 i dont care what Honda says, thats what all real mechanics do, open the heater core to allow the coolant to flow thru it, otherwise your heater core is empty and you wont get heat.

@@ACommenterOnUA-cam That's incorrect, this depends on the car, MOST CARS the coolant is always flowing through the heater hoses, it doesn't get "cut off" Your actuator door cuts the heat exchanger from the vents so heat doesn't go into the car. Otherwise you would blow cold air, if you haven't used the heater when you are driving.
Some more EXPENSIVE cars will have a cut off, (Heater control Valve) but most Sedans, always have coolant going through the core. For instance my Tiburon, always has coolant going through the heater hoses. If anything you want to run the AC, so you get the Radiator as hot as possible in IDLE to see how the temps are doing in park, and also to make sure your fans are working.
It's all dependent if the car has a heater control VALVE. Most cars do not have it, refer to the actual SHOP manual, or know your car. You're making a blanket statement for all cars, and it's not true.
I have a 2003 Honda Civic LX with no bleeder valve and used the funnel with coolant method to burp the system and it still didn't work. What I found out later is that you leave that funnel with coolant attached after shutting off the engine. Do not plug it. Let the coolant and engine cool overnight. As the coolant in the radiator and engine gets cold it contracts creating a vacuum sucking more coolant from the funnel. If you remove the fumnel too early, you risk sucking in air instead.
How would you be sucking in air if the radiator cap is closed and reservoir is filled with correct level of fluid?

After using funnels and bigger funnels , Water bottles. I do this job on my cars or for friends so I finally got a radiator funnel kit. Should be much more efficient and less mess.

Reservoir or not, u bleed it with this yellow funnel. Turn the heat on high and get to work. Use distilled water.
Ive been watching bubbles come up for half an hour now on my 02 subaru. Im starting to think its sucking air through a blown gasket? Dont have oil in coolant nor coolant in oil. My problem was overheating while coolant got pushed out to the reservour. Changed thermostat thinking its not opening, still same problem overheating when driving. So next stop is the radiator. Well i changed that just now and the damn bubbles just wont stop popping out here and there. I really dont want to pull the engine for the heads...
Check coolant for combustion gas. My guess is exhaust gas is being pushed from the cylinder into the coolant there's a chemical you can use the test Harbor Freight has it
@@bryan7292 yeah i decided to risk it and took it on the highway. Everything worked fine. Only thing i could think of was that the radiator was replaced so it took it longer to maybe push the air through all the channels. Seems running fine for now. Thanks though! Heads are a nightmare on these things.
Usually air will slowly build up on one side of the thermostat then it won't open then it will overheat
@@paultsilits8758 If it was still bleeding air after half an hour you really should check for combustion gas regardless of whether it is "running ok". That small leak if you have it in your head gasket will turn into a big one some day
I only filled the funnel a quarter full and when my car got to 195f, coolant began backfilling the funnel eventually overflowing...spilled out all over the sides
Did you find out why? Mine started overflowing at operating temperature

Maybe your thermostat is stuck closed
What about just driving up on ramps or jacking the front of your car up, so the radiator fill cap is higher than the rest of the engine?

As soon as my thermostat opens the thing erupts and blows coolant everywhere. When I start all over I have to add more than a gallon so it seems I instantly lose about half.
Did you find out why this happens?
@@SuperAmoney2000 Yes. My thermostat was actually stuck open and I was reaching boiling point, not operating temp. The boiling point was lowered to the half way mark on my temperature gauge, well below the red, because I was doing a flush with water and radiator cleaner.
I thought the half way mark was 185° F, which is my thermostat’s specification, but it was actually 210° F (just below boiling). With a stuck-open thermostat the only way to get the temperature to go up was to idle for a long time but that’s exactly what you do when burping/bleeding air from the system.
If you engage VTEC you will get all the bubbles out in about 2.5 seconds lol

So i had my old car (2000 galant) but when i tried using this funnel in like about 8 min with the car on and heater on the coolant would start to gush out. So what i would have to do is turn the car off before it got to that point, the car wouldn't overheat or anything but i never found out why it would do that.
Anybody knows why?

Wrong adapter I'd guess. The rubber side touches the radiator.

@@geraltofrivia4651 I went through several also- Is the rubber side touching the radiator? Some might not be perfect, but it doesn't have to be exact to get a "burp"! It can be smaller than the radiator.
You don't need a funnel to do the operation.

Well, actually the water that is collected from a dehumidifier is, in a way, distilled being that distilled water is steamed and collected. However, TRUE distilled water is water that has gone through a process that removes the *minerals* that you would typically find in tap water. Water collected from a dehumidifier AND water 'dripping from air conditioners' will still contain those *minerals* that you do NOT want contaminating your auto's coolant system.

Dehumidified water is nowhere near pure. It has all the particles from your living space in it. Dust, germs, pollen. It's probably fine to use but you can't compare it to actually distilled water.
You just left the car on to warm or did you turn the heater on?
So I tried this and the coolant got hot an overflowed out of the funnel and went all over the floor. What could I have been doing wrong?
There's multiple situations that can cause this. It's probably just expansion of your coolant. When coolant gets hot it'll expand and if you filled up the funnel too high it will flow over once it gets hot. Another situation (more unlikely but severe) is that you have a blown head gasket. but you would also experience alot of white smoke, an overheating car and/or coolant and oil mixing.
You probably had too much coolant left in the funnel, by the time the radiator was already full. When it's close to full, you want a lot of room left at the top of the funnel, so it won't spill.
We have same situation. And one thing I thoght that the cap is not well fitted haha. Well, that turned just a normal funnel to me. And I just bleed by squeezing the radiator hoses, and let the aux fan run in 3-5 cycles.
