    Best. Video. Ever. Bravo! A tour de force! Phillmania, brilliant. Fun fact, the runtime of this video exceeds that of Supeman IV: The Quest for Peace. (Odd and not particularly flattering comparison). I wonder if the Internet rage monkeys really appreciate the tides of change players from long ago have endured. A follow up on Necrons would be intriguing. Personally, you piqued my curiosity when briefly mentioning Planetstrike - a companion piece on ancillary game modes through the editions and impact on your army would be cool. Planet Strike, Cities of Death, Apocalypse, Boarding Actions etc. There was a point between 4th and 5th (or was it 5th & 6th?) where ranges were stable/stagnant and you posed the question are people happy keeping the same army with nothing new coming out? If memory serves this same early to mid 2000s period was when communities began gathering over 'pre-heresy' (as it was then) or 'true scale' and extinct/deep lore armies (exodites, squats etc). Stunning video. Great work.

    Finally finished the video. I had to pivot to a terrain project for a D&D game I’m running tomorrow.
    I like the Phil perspective on army building. I would add that magnetizing vehicles isn’t a bad use of time to keep costs down, but YMMV.

    My thoughts, in no particular order
    1. It would be interesting to mark up your slides of unused models with "not in the current list(but usable in a higher point game or rotated in", "impossible to use and "outdated and replace by a prettier newer version. As you have already done an obscene amount of work, I would be up for/interested in doing that marking up if you DM your slide deck.
    2. The optimal feelgood change is for points to drop just enough to use your whole old collection plus one or two new cool things
    3. You will forgive me if I watch to extra FAQ video tomorrow.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      You can have the Slides sure, I just need to be back home.
      I agree on point 2.
      The extra video is very short!

    I like the concept of Philmania.
    I'm glad you didn't include the 'Rule of One', because as a hoard army enjoyer it is common to want 2-3 of a unit in order to achieve the same goal an elite army could do with one, also I like symmetry in my Guard and Admech army lists because I think it reflects those faction's Lore
    Also I am the Gal with the entire Emperor's Fist Leman Russ Tank Company

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, I agree sometimes in an army the theme is repeating things. Tank companies are cool. Also in this category you could put things like Deathwing themed armys or like Wraithguard themed eldar armies. However if you play those things then you are at the mercy of an edition of 40k just making the thing you have gone all in on not very good.

  • @Ms.Whiskertoria

    I don't know how prevalent this is but, as someone who started collecting in late 3rd ed I collect Guard, Orks, and later Admech, In the last 5 years or so if I need a new Special Weapon or Option, that I don't have in my collection I just go by a single mini of the kit online.
    Reconstituting units into different arrangements to suit my needs is something I've been doing Particularly in My Ork Army. I've been doing since late 7th and Early 8th after Orks had the same codex for like 4 and a bit editions.
    I got My Admech Army in 9th from a friend who only had then because they were the only way she could play Knights in 6th or 7th. As a Skitarii Hoarde enjoyer I was had to go through the stages of Grief not being able to run my Big bricks of Skitarii infantry. My friends and I basically put down 40k for a while because we all had to Come to terms with the way the Armies changed as well the Issues of Early 10th specifically.
    Now I am in the process of Reconstituting my Skitarii into its 10th ed incarnation.
    Single tear for the 9th ed Guard Codex being out for like not even a year before 10th arrived. My tank Company did keep me playing in early 10th though.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      Yeah I think the grind of reconstituting armies to work properly in the new edition gets a lot of people down. This is precisely why I am now advocating just owning a really wide pool of models for one army. Good shout about being able to buy single plastic models online from people who buy the boxes and split them up. Especally useful if you actually have the plasma gun (or whatever) in your bitz box and you are just having to order a basic trooper to hold it off the internet.

    Great video! Necrons would be great to see and are my second favourite army after Adepta Sororitas and it was the changes in 5th edition that really made me like Necrons. I much prefer the idea of Ancient beings waking up to find vermin have infested their house and then need to cleanse it. I like Tyranids too, but I'm pretty okay with there being on one Tyranids faction.
    As a painter first, deprecation of models doesn't really phase me as I still got to hobby with them and routinely buy models I just want to paint and display.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      I might do it for Necrons, I think Necrons have a particularly interesting story to tell. Being mainly interested in painting does make life easyer, yes!

    I just want to say, that I was just like Tom was on the release of 3rd edition. I did not want to give up on 2nd edition.
    Thanks for such an interesting video. Really appreciate all your effort.
    As for Kill team, I would have thought they would not invalidate the current teams but make new supplement box options to augment them. Did they not do something similar with commanders in the previous addition? Up the team sizes by 1-3 models per team and offer them additional unit packs each team can take. I assume on some level they see Kill team as a gateway into 40k and if you can get people to get used to buying a bit more and having more models available it might get more people to make the jump?

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      Second edition was a heck of a thing, but we were young with squashy brains. Maybe everyone just loves there first ever edition. I am seriously hoping they don't invalidate the existing teams. they COULD go for an addon type thing similar to Elites and Commanders, but I doubt they will. Not really sure why I think that but I do

      @@TabletopImpulse I enjoyed it as a tour, although feel you could’ve gone a bit further with your observations/conclusions on your journey with them. There was a segment missing between your collection chronology & philmania.
      Totally agreed with everything you identified in philmania though - build what you think is cool and don’t overload on unit types as rules/points change. Reflecting on it, I’ve peared back elements of my Corsair list as there’s no need to get certain things many times. The only “old” model I’m going to get is the Vyper, everything else is new models and ones I actually think are cool!

    • @TabletopImpulse

      No; I didn't actually do a deep dive on the meta focused changes that would have to happen in each edition. AND the 10th edition part uses the current points, whereas all the other editions use the published codex points, because of what it is easiest to find!

    • @majortom7186
      @majortom7186 2 місяці тому

      @@LadyJaye3215we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one. For my money AMG and Parabellum are both producing better minis than GW, and the newer TTCombat stuff is as good as GW’s output.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  2 місяці тому

      No. Other companies make things that are diffrent to Citadel. Painted Shatterpoint Dooku recently. Very nice model. But much much much much less detail then GW figure. And few optional assembly parts. I dont think anyone produces a product like Games Workshops better then games workshop, other companies do well when they go down a different stylistic direction
