South Asian Stereotypes in Film and Television

  • UPDATE: Please disregard the Lion scene I inserted from 2:54 - 3:04. I had read one article speculating the narrative of Lion and went with it instead of further researching. I love Lion and Dev Patel is one of my favorite actors. I do not agree with the clip I included at the time of this video's editing. The question can still be applied to the scenes following Lion though! Thank you for watching this video and I hope you can take away something from it and do your own research as well.
I made this video essay for a film class I took. I wanted to compile clips that featured South Asians in stereotypical roles and contrast them with new voices that are emerging and combating those stereotypes. I highly recommend checking out Hari Kondabolu's documentary titled: The Problem With Apu. Let's create discourse about the types of roles we've seen and hope to see in the future!
If you're interested in more video essays about South Asian Representation, check out these other ones I made:

A video wouldn't make any change besides a year ain't that long to see a "change" at all. Especially these cultural stuffs. But you shouldn't blame them entirely. Indians go there mostly for higher studies/high paying jobs and are really smart folks. Some they stereotype out of jealousy as well. Which is I'd say harmless if you're an indian. Much like marathi folks play the Mi marathi/amchi mumbai card because outsiders from other states take up good jobs in mumbai and they're have to compete. Expect that it would be there.

Actually, I don't really care about Hollywood. We have our own movie industries and I don't want some white approval in Hollywood. And I am not changing by culture for white approval. Examples shown here like Apu in Simpsons are actually not racist as Simpsons shows stereotypes of almost all cultures. Harold and Kumar were showing America. So the movie is not racist. Also, Hassan Minhaj and Lilly Singh are a bad representation of Indians. Both of them used the "Indian stereotypes" to gain popularity. The only movie that I felt racist was "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". Indians are represented badly in it and Americans believed that Indians are like that.

Kunal Nayyar has actually written a book called "Yes, my accent is real; and some other things I haven't told you" claiming that the thick accent he played in the show is real, so, you're literally criticizing a person's accent for no apparent reason other than to hate on him. (Also, if you haven't noticed, the show is literally about 4 geeks. Every main male character is a geek regardless of their colour. At least he was also shown as an astrophysicist from a rich family, which you would rarely see in both Bollywood and Hollywood. He wasn't geeky because he was Indian, he just happened to be a geek with an Indian origin. Apart from that, please pay attention to Raj's sister.)
Furthermore, we Indians would very much like to disown Lilly Singh as an Indian, because well, her content is cringe, and all she does is stereotype us even more than any of the shows and movies you have mentioned.

The thing with representation is that when we see any 'Indian' in non- Indian movies, there is something jarring about them that takes you away from the movie. It almost like you know this is an actor playing a character because they do not look, dress, speak or behave like any Indians you will find off the street.

I think what’s really sad is how other Asian communities (EA’s, SEA’s WA’s) just don’t seem or want to unite under the, ‘Asian American’ identity. In other words, if we are really going to make the issues and struggles of each of these different Asian groups (eg: EA, SA etc.) the very and only thing that divides the, ‘Asian American’ identity- well we might as well ban the term, “Asian” and address ourselves by which Asian country we ethnically come from.

Hi! Maybe I should have been more explicit on my perspective during the editing process. I unfortunately don't have a rich understanding of Bollywood films and the culture surrounding that industry as this video was made from a "western" perspective. I can only analyze these stereotypes from a South Asian American lense because I have grown up as a South Asian American with a lack of authentic representation during childhood. I am grateful for the progress that is being made currently and can't wait to see better strides in the future not just in Hollywood but also Bollywood. Thank you for sharing your perspective :)

American film industry is dominant with south Indian diaspora and bollywood with north west population, these industries are just setting their own dominant narrative. Unfortunately India has many traditional dresses and population is not homogenous and these south Indians just promote their own narrative abroad but again even in India we have totally marginalized our vibrant North east people.

People in west are known to create stereotypes and Indian diaspora is known to accept it to look more whiter than white to be accepted in their society. This term South-Asian is very problematic as it diminish the importance of culturally and ethincally vibrant place like India and put them together with pakistan/afghanistan&bangladesh. Just saying South-Asian create a stereotype that all Indians are dark skin and India is just present in south and doesn't extends into what West call "East" and it effectively alienate North-East who happens to have mongoloid facial features.

Again we can't blame them as we have ourself isolated NE for long and that is the reason why Kpop is popular there because they see themselves similar to kpop actors.

@@shreyajags3008 It is not about North/South but giving a real perspective of what makes India all round vibrant, so many thought process and cultures, dresses coexist with each other for centuries and such diversity should be shown to the world otherwise it gives an Impression of segregation, there is a rise in hate crimes against "Asian Americans" in america and atleast there should be some effort to include NE in our story tellings and this term "South Asian" is shallow and problematic because it includes nations like pakistan/bangladesh with us but tends to seperate NE as "Asians" . We should show what make India unique , what an ignorant westerner can mistook for Arab/Persian/african/"Asian" could verywell be an Indian, films should be melting pot of all these otherwise lots of people would feel isolated, point is all about inclusion and simultaneously breaking stereotypes what west has created and what we have created ourself.

As an Indian, I really appreciate the idea this video is coming from (so kudos for that) but i feel like it also needs to be acknowledged that:
    1. By "South Asia" it means the *entirety* of Southern Asia and not *just* India (as represented in this video if say so)
    2. I would rather prefer (& support) people like Liza Koshy over Lily and Hasan for not basing off of the 'stereotypes' for their fame over media. No hate.
    3. Not really related to the very topic but if discussing India itself, acknowledgement & representation of diversities is an extremely rare occurrence on its own. As diverse as the land is, when it comes to its media, it only ever sticks to the Western, the Mainland & the Northwest (for example, just how often do you come across news about states like Mizoram, Odisha or Telengana).
I know I am in no position to be saying any of this behind my keyboard but I just find it funny when I see just how long of a way there is to go.

There are lot of talented actors in other South Asian countries but one cares and having expectation from Hollywood is like coming out of alive from blackhole. At least, Indians are being showed in movies and television shows but others they don't even get chance. but stereotyping is the worst and major problem which has been repeated day by day by these hollywood movies and television shows.

Also in chup chup ke, character of paresh rawal says to a watchman “ Wo sala muchhad gujrat mei reh ke Nepal ki jagah gujrati ko chaukidaar rakha hein” like nepalis are destined to no more than their chowkidaar and their momo wala .
