    Keelin my parents broke up before I was born and had the same set up, weekends with my dad and weekdays with my mam. So many other factors make it very different from B's situation but I'm around your age now and I never feel like I missed out on having two parents in the same house. They stayed good friends and still talk now even though I'm an adult. And as an adult im so glad they didn't stay together just because of me because they would have been unhappy and hurt eachother (and me) more than them being separate. I love them both and I know they love me and that's all that matters!

    ✋also went to private school for the final five years of my education. I’m glad I didn’t go there before age 12, as by the time I got there I was aware these people and this level of privilege was not normal. I was even just amazed by the lunch food on offer. The education was great, some people were great but there was a solid proportion of snobs. Most of my friends were scholarship and bursary folk bc they were just normal and nice! There were definitely more nice people at the state school I went to. I think you’ve got years to make this decision, but either way the kiddo will be grand.

      yeah i went to private school for the last 2 years of my middle school education, my mom wanted me to have "better" resources to prepare for high school. it was the worst 2 years of my life. my peers at school were so crazy, i never got bullied like this and saw this many sick kids together at one place before. just reminiscing back makes me go "wow" it took me some years and many phases to through but thank god i survived that hellscape and the place i was at mentally (i was severely depressed and suicidal). i am all good now 🙏 i love life as it is, i accept myself, i try to surround myself with likeminded, loving, kind people. it truly does get better❤️‍🩹

    I think it’s hard to argue about the inequality of education and choose to put your kids in a private school.. I know that sounds a bit harsh but IMO it just perpetuates the inequality. I think going to a public school is so valuable in terms of socialising with a range of other kids which is just as important as the formal education kids get from school too.

    • @thewhitebengaltiger
      @thewhitebengaltiger 6 місяців тому +1

      Yeah that’s fair enough. I think my main point is that public schools aren’t automatically worse or that there’s a better option that’s private. There’s many great public schools, academically and for socially for kids.
      Anyway, thanks for taking the comment well :)

    I was homeschooled between the ages of 9-13 and went to primary and secondary school before/after that period. Although I’m v grateful to have been given the option to experience homeschooling I definitely wouldn’t recommend it based on my personal experience. There’s loads of valid reasons why people homeschool and for many it’s amazing especially if you find good homeschool networks but I found it affected my confidence and mental health a lot and I think the socialising element of school is so important! Whatever you/your child chooses to do education wise is absolutely your choice I just wanted to add in something on homeschooling :)

    You know those kids that you feel jealous of because you see how their parent is with them and you wish your parent did that for you? Well congratulations because your child is officially one of those kids lol. Which is a huge compliment to you. My parents haven't spoken to each other or been in the same room as each other for over 20 years. It's like they forget that they were once in love. I wish they could have put aside their personal beef with each other like you are doing with your ex. Sometimes when I hear you talk about researching attachment styles and parenting, I feel so sad for my child self whose parents didn't seem to give those things a second thought. Basically, well done, you're clearly setting her up to be a happy healthy adult.

    13:54 I totally agree that its so important to have conversations with people who have different experiences and opinions to your own. Was talking to a homophobe the other day at the pub who said he thought homosexuality is unnatural and I asked why and listened. And though I think that homosexuality is natural, we agreed to disagree and accepted each others views. My friend who didnt realise this was his view, asked him if he had a problem with him being bi/ if they could still be friends and he said yeah they can still be friends.

    i was at a public primary school and a private secondary school. which kind of sounded like one of your preferred options for B. Honestly the public primary school was so wholesome and really taught me early on the different places and backgrounds that people come from, and I definitely carried that into my private secondary school which meant I could reap the benefits that private school does give children, while also being able to take all the wealth with a grain of salt. And loads of kids at private school are from just normal families (parents just choose to spend their money differently) I know richer kids than me at state schools because their parents prioritised holidays and stuff.

    My parents split up when I was a baby too, but did the whole co parenting thing and I would switch between their houses every 3 days. I’m also an only child. It gave me a really big perspective on the world with both my parents lifestyles being so different. To sum it up my mom had money and my dad was poor. It was sometimes hard as a kid when I would really miss the other parent that I wasn’t around. Public school is such an amazing asset we all have access to! Like you said, sending your kids to school gives them the opportunity to interact with people who aren’t like them and develop social skills early on. As someone who is an elementary teacher, the best thing that you can do to help public schools is to send your kid to one. Many schools get money based on enrollment. The students who tend to be ahead and stay ahead are thanks to what their parents do with them at home. Are you reading with them every night and asking them questions about what they read? Are they in stimulating activities outside of school? Do they have access to tutoring? This is what helps and you will absolutely be there to give her these opportunities. Schooling is a very personal choice, but there are huge benefits to sending your kid to public school.

    Really loved the conversation about schooling. I went to a private girls' school for the final 5 years of school which was quite a good time to join. I was able to understand that this level of privilege was not normal, but also to really make the most of the higher standard of education. I felt like because I hadn't been there from the beginning like most of the others, I was playing catch up. My work ethic was insane - like I don't think I worked that hard at uni or now that I'm working! Private school definitely made me believe that my self-worth and my academic achievements were interlinked because my school especially was known for being really academic. A way to measure the school's success was by how many pupils went to the top universities. This meant that the pastoral care was lacking - it really felt like grades were the only thing that mattered. I'm constantly weighing up the pros and cons of my school experience. I'm so grateful that I put the work in to get into a good uni but I also missed out on a lot of socialising and emotional development. It was so sheltered and I have had to spend years unlearning some of the limiting beliefs that were drummed into us. The education system is brutal my queens!

    • @KeelinMoncrieff
      @KeelinMoncrieff  6 місяців тому

      Was it a mixed private school or all girls? The private school I went to wasn’t focused on academics really that’s much at all, which is probably why I preferred it ! Do you feel burnt out now after that experience or has it helped you now?

    • @florencelampart7759
      @florencelampart7759 6 місяців тому

      @@KeelinMoncrieff It was all girls. I left in 2016 and went straight to uni but I was pretty burnt out from studying beforehand to the extent that I didn't take uni too seriously. - I think because of the pressure at school my rebellious phase only came after I'd left which is weird hahaha. After graduating i've done a lot of faffing about trying different jobs but I think my work ethic is now at a good level and I am appreciating my education. I don't know if I would change anything tbh, just have had to learn that life isn't a sprint but a marathon.

    i had a middle class background and went to state school in the uk preschool through to sixthform and then to Oxford uni. my mum read to me from young and because of my privelege and mum being mostly at home i could do lots of extra curriculars. i did do some private tutoring in the last weeks of school. ultimately i think home learning environment and the childs personal relationship with learning is more important. i was a complete bookworm so it didnt matter where i went to an extent because i loved learning so much (would study even if the supply teacher was crying and a fight broke out in class 😭). if i had adhd or other learning difficulties the help at private school could be a lot more tailored and better. just my experience. getting to oxford though private school would have prepared me a lot better for the culture schock.

    I highly recommend homeschooling as someone who has experienced both state schooling and homeschooling. You can join groups with other homeschoolers where the parents take it in turns to share their skills so your child gets socialisation, normally with kids of different ages which I think is healthy for children to not just socialise solely with one age group as you do in school. Much less risk of bullying. There’s a lot of misogyny in school which affects girl’s self esteem, my confidence shot up when I was taken out of school. I also had loads of friends from swimming, martial arts and other groups. So I wouldn’t worry about lack of socialisation or fear your child’s prejudice won’t be challenged. I think you’d give your daughter an excellent education and raise her to be empathetic and inquisitive. School kills creativity.

    A home schooler here✋I was home schooled up until I was 16 and went to collage. Honestly couldn't recommend it enough! For the social side of it, I always had friends growing up, either other home schooled kids or kids who went to school that I'd met through after school clubs. I was always mixing with kids from different backgrounds and different classes. The other side of home schooling which I loved was having the freedom over your education that you wouldn't have in a school. Me and my siblings all had the opportunities to focus on the subjects we had particular interests in, which I think is especially important when the school system has so little regard for music and the arts. Being home schooled, I was never put on the conveyor belt that tells kids that they all have to be a certain level in a load of subjects that they may not have any interest in, and only need to be good at because the world has deemed them as "important". I am studying to become a jeweller and my older brother is a jazz musician and I don't think we'd be doing what we're doing without the freedom we had as kids xx

    • @KeelinMoncrieff
      @KeelinMoncrieff  6 місяців тому

      I love that so much!! I’ve heard so many varied experiences of homeschooling I’d say it’s very much down to the relationship you have with your parents and your home environment, would I be right in saying that? I feel like it’s so much pressure I wouldn’t want to fuck her up or for her to resent me 😭

    • @marthamooney630
      @marthamooney630 6 місяців тому

      @@KeelinMoncrieff Yes I'd agree that having a good relationship with your parents is important with homeschooling, but I'd also say I don't think my relationship with with my Mum (stay at home parent who taught me and my siblings) would be as good if we hadn't spent to much time together. With the whole resenting you for homeschooling her issue, I think as long as you're flexible and she would have the option to go to school if she wanted to - when she's old enough to make those kinds of decisions for herself. It's important to remember that up until sort of GCSE age (12/13) you could send her to school and it wouldn't affect her too much. I know people who tried homeschooling and it didn't work out for them so they went back to school. You could start out homeschooling and if its not for you then you could send her to school later. Either way, your decision to homeschool or send her to school doesn't have to be a life long decision x

    Idk if its the same in Ireland but in the US you can open a Vanguard 529 Account for B's schooling - its basically an investment account for your kids education and it has a MUCH higher yield and return than a regular savings account. It's basically free money if you invest in it consistently. If you can't get specifically a Vanguard 529 I'm sure other countries have equivalents to it. (Investing is where its at bb 💪🏼). Lovely video 🥰

    Have you ever thought of grammar schools rather than private education for B? It avoids the snobbery and at the same time puts her in an encouraging and enthusiastic environment.

      My cousins are in a grammar school but I thought most of them were fee paying too - I’ll look into it thank you!!

    I would move time and space not to send my children to public school.

      Really?? What are the public schools like in your area? I know that private schools don’t guarantee a substantially better education, there are definitely more academically esteemed schools than the private one I went to - I think it was just a better experience for me because the classes were smaller so you felt more looked after. The actual building and resources were better too
