Oh reconditioning them would definitely get better value out of them. I think that’s why the batteries sell for higher than the lead content, they get recycled and reconditioned somewhere down the line
I'm retired Fire/ Burg Alarm installer we replace & scrap 12v lead acid batts all the time. A bigger source of battery scrapping is golf carts. I work on them as a hobby and have turned in the six 8v batteries for as much as $75 bucks! 29 cent per kg here in Australia $1.19kg for lead. Melt them into lead bar and $10 a lead. And you cannot buy sulfuric acid here in Australia. U can filter and boil it to get string acid.
If the voltage is above 12v to 13v it doesn't mean the battery is always good. It may not have any amps to turn over the engine. best way to check is to charge it full then put it in a car with the multimeter set to read 12v. While reading the multimeter try to start the car if the voltage drops past 9v the battery is toast and wont hold up much longer. Most people find out the hard way when they cant start the car once it gets cold out. That battery that reads 12.2v seems like it has a dead cell.
Good place to find lead acid batteries is to go your local fire alarm service company. Fire alarm systems and emergency lighting all have battery backups and are replaced frequently. Most companies enjoy the free pickup and give them to you, but you might have some companies request money in return because they know the scrap value. Just make sure you are turning a profit.
I LOVE batteries! Such easy money. I think they’re on the way out though and lead seems to be going down slowly so I imagine they’ll become rare over time
Lithium Ion batteries, such as those from laptops and portable hoovers, containing 18056 lithium batteries are favoured by hobbyists that build cells for electric vehicles, 'power walls' etc. Each laptop battery contains between 4 and 6 of these cells typically. Cheers Thub!

I didn’t want to get into it because it would make the video too long and unfocused. That and I don’t know the first thing about it haha! They come in different load ratings, and I wouldn’t want to leave people thinking they’re all the same.
if you end up with a meaningful amount of old car / truck batteries then its worth the investment in a cold crank tester. then you can test the batteries for 12v+ , charge the good ones for a few hours then test the cold cranking amps. this will give you a much better idea of the battery condition. As a diesel engineer i have seen many batteries that hold 12v charges but are still useless. most batteries will have the cold crank amps marked on them as CCA (amps) , you want to be at least 80% of that amount.
Good tips on lead acid batteries. Also good advice on alkaline batteries. I was recently told to bring my AA Durocell/Energizer batteries to the fire station and I was doubtful of that device. I've always thrown them in the garbage and now I know it should be fine. They can cause a mess once they start leaking or even can start a fire if all together in a bin or something.

It might not be worth it if you're bringing 1 battery, but when you have a stack amd you can add 20 lbs of water to the dry cells...
That jumper box might have been perfectly good, just needing a replacement battery. A quality one isn't cheap, so I was cringing as you ripped it up and cut the connectors off of the battery despite them being simply bolted on. I just replaced the battery in mine; it wasn't a breeze, but not difficult, either.

Lucky for me, my escrap yard also takes lithium ion batteries for the same price, so I throw in those that I randomly find and hey, another 5 cents. Ok. Alkalines? I throw em into my steel bin.
My yard buys them per piece not by weight $1.00 per small up to $6.00 per large I actually would make more money tearing them apart other than contending with the acid.
Batteries are my favorite, though I do not come across many where I am here in the USA. Do you scrap flat screens and sell the parts? I find good money in picking up flat screens with busted screen. I test them and if the tv powers up and is good I sell the boards, buttons, remotes, and cables. Even if the TV is busted I turn in the metal and boards for scrap. Bonus, the plastic (Plexglass?) backer is fun to shoot at with a pellet gun. Only down side is the plastic left overs.
Sulfation results from oxide buildup on the plates, if they grow enough they will touch and short out. To cure this you need to drain (if it's not already dry,) refill with baking soda & distilled water. Shake well - the goal is to wash the corrosion out. Once clean and dry again refill with distilled water & Epson salt. Epson salt = magnesium sulfate and it is what reacts with charged lead to produce sulfuric acid & lead oxide. Thus charging a battery makes sulfuric acid and discharging the same battery is the exact opposite of that reaction. #scienc3 🤓

Okay so oddly enough one of the more common things I personally come across are power tools of all sorts that either plain don't work anymore or the batteries and/or chargers are no longer working....idk lol. Anyway....I was actually hoping; when I saw the subject of this particular video; that u would mention these types of batteries and what I should do with them. But sence u did not and I am now commenting I figured I'd ask if u could please do a video about wether or not broken power tools are something worth scrapping and if so how I should go about this? On a side note: when I began scrapping seriously as my side source of income about 2 years ago now, your first scrapping for beginners video was the first one I ever watched and I've been a big fan ever sence! Anyway sorry to fangirl out but I'm a believer in giving credit where it's deserved so yeah....please let me know if u can do that vid if u haven't done one about that already...and if u have I'd love to know where I could find it. Hello Thub, I came across your channel about a month or so ago and have been enjoying consuming video after video. Thank you for all your great and helpful content. I recently finally collected a decent bag of cans here in St. Louis, MO, USA, and was pleasantly surprised to get $16 and a little change for them. Your channel gives me hope that I could make a decent amount on the side scrapping. I really enjoyed this video and also look forward to more inthus series. I did want to add a couple of options for recycling other [than lead] batteries. Around here we have Best Buys and Batteries Plus retail stores which will recycle any batteries, for free drop off. They don't buy them but do keeping them out of landfills. Also one could purchase a rather expensive Terra Cycle box to recycle batteries for those hard core about keeping them out of landfills. Thanks again. I look forward to your next video! Oh and great send off line. I'll keep leaving it better than I found it. ~Blessings
Best way is to just put it in a polyethylene bottle to settle out.. if the acid is weak enough, stuffing a cotton ball in a funnel works if your in a hurry but just letting it settle out for a couple of weeks is less hassle and gets it nice and clear.. i have a couple of 10 litre polyethylene water bottles that i use to settle out the lead before distilling the acid for lab use but that is very dangerous unless you really know what your doing

Ha ha. Plumbing. That's what you think. Brass has 2-4% lead. And it doesn't mix well and migrates towards the surface. We are still being poisoned by lead plumbing.
Thanks for FA
Ur vids are definitely top tier in my opinion compared to others out here in UA-camsville....lol
Anyway I really appreciate how fast, efficient and to-the-point you are in every vid. That along with the fact that it's totally obvious you know what u are doing with all this is so refreshing and that's sadly a rare thing nowadays. Anyway sorry to fangirl out but I'm a believer in giving credit where it's deserved so yeah....please let me know if u can do that vid if u haven't done one about that already...and if u have I'd love to know where I could find it. Thank you for your time!
Oh yeah also....my nickname has been Panda sence I was 2 or 3 yrs old and it's my favorite animal next to dogs so....love the follower name you have ESPECIALLY! lol....so thank you for that as well. ☺️😁😬💯💯💯🤓😁🤣

I just subscribed, and took in 200kg of led batteries
Lead acid batteries have always been my side gig I been making money off them since I was 15 years old
They always make my day. And I’ll never get over the “core charge” scam all the retailers are running these days 😭
The last battery's I took in to local yard here last year I had 5kg short of half a ton which got me 249£
They make lead backed drywall for xray rooms
Don't forget power wheels batteries as well
Canadian Tire pays $20 for a car battery ....
Sweet vid man !!
~Blessings
Is there a way to clean battery acid or strain out the impurities what material would you use
I’d just use a coffee filter, though you can get finer ones specifically for chemistry applications. Never tried personally!
What would you do if the best price close to you is only 12 cents a pound for lead acid batteries?
This is the problem I'm running into. I can't turn in a battery for $0.12 a pound when he's saying you can get like $10 per freaking battery.
Actually you can sell Lithium Ion laptop batteries and they are worth about double to triple lead batteries.
Where do you sell them?
@@ryanparadis1419 Anywhere - Laptop battery packs are used in homebrew "Tesla Walls". Even failed battery packs will usually have a number of good cells still inside them.
The very old lead from stain glass and roofing leaf …often has a fair bit of silver in it.
You can charge it super fast with a welder and bring it back to life. There are videos on that. Love your videos btw! And I’d like to see your body art lol (I tattoo myself) like the double orbit ad well! Have a great day!
I stack my batteries for way later. There is too much lead to only get $10 or so. I think the junkyards are practically getting lead for nothing.
In Saint Peters Mo. pure lead go's for 35.cents a LB. . Lead acid battery go's 15 cents a pound . bust holes in every side with a claw hammer when drained smash it with a sledge hammer
what would be a good price for car battery 30 lbs
I get 30c/lb so anything over $9 would be a good price to me
I like this guy
He's Kool mon 😎👍

End of life recycling fee? Sounds like a perfectly sensible policy that's not in the US to me. I've been thinking about moving to Canada for awhile, what do you think should I do it Thub?
I think Canada is great! Plenty of space if you wanna try it out haha
@@thubprint heck yeah. That's the nudge I needed. It's officially part of the 5 year plan. I've been going to Quebec all my life because my Grandfather owned a cabin up there, so it's always been a dream of mine. The Trump shit show and the Thub making something good out of "crap" show finally convinced me to go for it. Thanks! Love the scrap videos. Haven't gotten more than a few bucks yet but it's help me integrated metal recycling into my life and keep some stuff out of the landfill. Keep doing the thing.
Women definitely hated that hoodie anyway lol
🤣😂 fair enough! Still comfy tho 😜
Dead Batteries in spain are worth the same - €10-€15 per unit
$4 for car and $6 for truck batteries, may '24 Australia
Batteries are so neat. I wish I understood the science better.
Side note am I the only one who finds it funny that it's multi-meter instead of multimeter... like a speedometer isn't a speed-o-meter. Lol
I will now forever call it the speed-o-meter 😂
thubprint legendary!
thnx
They also come out of alarm systems
best tip is if they are not sealed top up with water be for you take them in and get paid for the water ass well
Just like hot water heaters in the winter, fill them up with water and let them freeze and then scrap them
Even though they are sealed there are still caps on them you can take off and fill them up, look at a sealed battery you can see where to put a utility knife to open them up
@@dns938 years ago we was getting a lot of aluminium of one job mid winter and raining want to a scrap yard they weight you then sent you about 400 yards down a lane with a bend in it to the aluminium shop after the 1st time they had paid us for a 45 gallons drum of water we let out when we want round the bend think we had over 60 loads so they had a lot of water
Hello up there, my question: do you or do you know anything about Industrial mercury ? (thermostats, etc) thanks in advance
No, sorry... though I've always wanted a little bottle of mercury, haha!
