Hayla Danae well the same as always right? Supply and demand? I can speculate just as well as you on how long it’ll take to get a vaccine and put everybody back to work, but the only things for sure are that prices will go down until that happens, and keep pace with inflation over the long term. It’s always going to be cheaper to recycle metal rather than pull new stuff out of the dirt, so they can only go so low. Speculation is more fun though! Maybe smaller buyers will be crushed by the financial squeeze and less competition will keep the buy prices low?
As a carpenter, I can tell you that if you ask your local door and window crews about taking apart the old doors and windows for the aluminum, they are often happy to provide a large volume for you. They are relatively easy to clean and usually pretty heavy. Plenty of large wires are also aluminum as well. They are only worth stripping if they are large though. Aluminum rims are better sold as spare parts than scrap.
Dirty Aluminium here in the UK is graded as 'Irony'. But 'Irony' grade now seems to include items of any non ferrous with other materials such as plastic.

Hello Thub. Sweden here again and scrapping still rocks. One yard has category aluminium wire, rims and then all other aluminium in the same bin. Another yard takes it all as aluminium, except wire, same bin. I do get lots of household assistents if you know what it is? I take off aluminium top and motor, the rest goes as RAFF, dirty aluminium in English with a few screws and other ferrous things in it. They accept up to 10% ferrous by wheigt with aluminium. Stay safe and take care.

@@thubprint Yes he is- he is aiming for 1 tonne i believe. In regards to melting things and bringing it into a scrap yard- most say DON'T. Most yards will reject any melted down metals because they have no proof as to what metals you may have included in there.
Identify you cast vs die cast aluminum by getting some root killer for septic tanks and mixing up a spray. Just mix the septic crystals up in some water and toss in a spray bottle. Then when you’re wanting to know for sure, spray the metal and if it turns dark/black it is an alloy “pot metal”. Aluminum stays it’s pretty white/silver color. Scrap on scrappers. Question- Am I the only scrapper that melts his down to ingots and sells that way? I make a whole lot more money doing it that way.
For window blinds.. with it loosely open (not bundled) cut the string at both ends of the steel bars on top and bottom. 4 cuts in total. once you do that you should be able to pull the string out of the center and then the latter like string off the sides. takes just under 2 min or less.
Not the ones I’ve played with, there’s the threads connecting both strings between each strip that prevents that. Unless I’m doing it wrong? I think I need to try things out again!
@@thubprint I worked out a process for that. got about 60lb clean fins in 2 hours. pull the main string through bottom to top, then the connecting webworks will pull off the ends.

Saw a guy take a whole truck load of handicap devices. Yes he got paid breakage but he could have sat there with the grinder cut off the very little bit of steel used for adjustments and gotten paid. Aircraft aluminum is so damn strong you really don't want to get rid of it heck you could use that stuff for all kind of fun stuff building bike trailers for steaks in your garden.

Good information but for me time is my least valuable. I am disabled and use scrapping to supplement my income. Therefore taking the time to maximize what I get is a plus. But yeah if scrapping is your business and living by all means time is money don't waste it trying to get every penny.
I enjoyed that informative video very well I have heard of people that have take their cigarette butts and put them out in aluminum cans and then crushed the can to increase the weight to get more money is that true?
I don't know about your scrap yard but, but here you only get dirty aluminum for Venition blind leaves. So, rule of thumb, don't even bother cleaning them. You'll get more for the weight of the steel and string as dirty aluminum. On a side note, I've come up with a method of cleaning the blinds that doesn't take all that long. You just cut the center strings that basically hold up the bottom while the blind is retracted. If done right, you can grab all of the leaves on one side of the blind, then pull the actuator strands right off the other. They will slide right off while slightly separating the leaves temporarily. You then reorganize the side you pulled the strings off of and repeat the action on the other side. In the case of three or more string sets, the inside strings come off fairly easy as long as the center anchor strand is cut and removed first . ;-)
Gosh, over here in the UK they just have clean and dirty / steely Aluminium bins at scrap yards. They always try and says it’s dirty so you have to watch out.
Thub, I have shower door frames, seems they are aluminum and sometime stainless. thing is also seems custom expensive shower doors may be extruded and others may be folded sheet aluminum. is this your experience?
That transmission??? Get your biggest hammer and go to town on the case and bell housing. Pick up the pieces of clean cast Al and put the rest with your shred Fe.
@@jerryjennyc5352 for a hobby you are right. For money making the way thub does it's not cost effective. The setup just to be able to start melting down cans and pouring them into ingots would be hundreds of dollars.
Sometimes it takes a few trips to the scrapyard for them to help if they aren’t rushed. Sometimes they combine stuff I’ve separated, sometimes they separate what I’ve combined. Get the basics though so they aren’t annoyed🙂

Is there any value in melting aluminum into ingots or bars? I have a huge commercial satellite 📡 dish that is all aluminum and was thinking of melting it down into bars… love your channel.
I have my hd2500 duramax loaded up with about 600 lbs of stainless and another 5 or 600 lbs of #1 steel. As well as copper and aluminum but not much copper. Yet... still have two car dealerships to pick up from so I may have a decent load. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a cat or 3 lol.
@@thubprint indeed it would haha. The stainless is a grill hood from a restaurant. It's about 10 feet long 6.5' tall and 4' wide. Have to keep the tailgate open so it kind of sucks. I also missed the yard today lol. So now I have to wait until Monday and have this beastly thing strapped in the back of my truck. I still love it though. I have a stock pile of a.c. units and refrigerators I'm planning to clean and separate at some point. You're so right about relationships with the yard too. Which is another thing I deal with, they change help alot at my yard. So it's hit or miss with the scale tender. My scrapping doesnt usually bring me much unless I get good copper or brass ect. Cats of course. I'd say I make anywhere from 75 bucks to 400 or so. Every other week. Sometimes every 3 weeks. It's enough for diesel and to support my bad habits lol. Sorry for the novel I love scrapping metal!
@Marshall Davis personally I could care less, duramax, cummins, powerstroke... I've had fords my entire life. Time to try something else lol. I'm pretty impressed with the duramax so far. It's proven to be a tank.

FWIW, doing a spark test on aluminum can be dangerous. Aluminum tends to mush up and collect in the pores of the grinding wheel. Later on, when the grinder is put into use and warms up, the air inside these pores expands, but cannot escape. With enough aluminum loading, thiscan cause the grinding wheel to explode. If you need to spark test aluminum, be sure to dress the wheel afterwards.
That’s a darn good tip and I had no idea that was why we aren’t supposed to grind aluminium. I knew it was a no-no, but nobody had explained why before!
and how will you dress your grinding wheel, never seen anyone do it, if you then grind some steel, would that do it? or do you need some dressing tool, curious how you going to take this advise

Not the aluminium ones, just crack the plastic off and that’s what ya get. I’ve always been happy with rads though, $5-10 in one piece always seems pretty decent to me?
Oh just pouring aluminium ingots? Well the weight isn’t worth more because it’s just a different shape, but it would be the highest grade because it’s clean
I’m not a chemist, but I think the copper will dissolve in a muriatic acid + hydrogen peroxide solution and that should leave the lead if not left too long. It would have to be a big operation to justify the cost though.
Aluminium is 13 on the periodic table and steel/iron is 26 so you know aluminium is half the weight of steel. I keep finding either aluminium extrusion or zinc... Never a decent quantity of alu in one go lol
On rads watch out for Audi's and Benz's the trany cooler is a precious metal not Al. Should be 80$ pound. Take a large screw-driver and move those clips off the rads, some trany coolers are Al some are steel core Al.

some of those fosset heads are solid brass with a chrome coating so check it by scraping it real quick
On the blinds, try compressing them into an aligned stack and cut (grinder with a wheel) where the strings are.

Just recently learned that aluminum is essentially infinitely recyclable, unlike pretty much anything else (esp. plastics). New fave

that is the way I would do it, but my full time job is too valuable to give up. check electric and plumbing shops

My scrap yard is awesome. There's 3 grades of aluminum. Cans, clean (which includes cast), and dirty

Definitely! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one that wasn’t extruded though, but I really like those pieces. Decent weight for sure!
I'm scrapping an aluminium pool. The deck has carpet. I removed carpet and that was pain enough. Will scrap yard take with the glue all over deck

What about aluminum wire? It can be difficult to strip, but I've never tried to sell it with the coating still on.
I don’t strip that stuff, just doesn’t seem like a lot of $ per hour to me. It pays alright with the insulation on
How do you get tyres of wheels
I like using the reciprocating saw for the rubber and the angle grinder for the bead. If I’m trying to save both I just take them to a tire shop

@@thubprint indeed it would haha. The stainless is a grill hood from a restaurant. It's about 10 feet long 6.5' tall and 4' wide. Have to keep the tailgate open so it kind of sucks. I also missed the yard today lol. So now I have to wait until Monday and have this beastly thing strapped in the back of my truck. I still love it though. I have a stock pile of a.c. units and refrigerators I'm planning to clean and separate at some point. You're so right about relationships with the yard too. Which is another thing I deal with, they change help alot at my yard. So it's hit or miss with the scale tender. My scrapping doesnt usually bring me much unless I get good copper or brass ect. Cats of course. I'd say I make anywhere from 75 bucks to 400 or so. Every other week. Sometimes every 3 weeks. It's enough for diesel and to support my bad habits lol. Sorry for the novel I love scrapping metal!
@Marshall Davis personally I could care less, duramax, cummins, powerstroke... I've had fords my entire life. Time to try something else lol. I'm pretty impressed with the duramax so far. It's proven to be a tank.

FWIW, doing a spark test on aluminum can be dangerous. Aluminum tends to mush up and collect in the pores of the grinding wheel. Later on, when the grinder is put into use and warms up, the air inside these pores expands, but cannot escape. With enough aluminum loading, thiscan cause the grinding wheel to explode. If you need to spark test aluminum, be sure to dress the wheel afterwards.
That’s a darn good tip and I had no idea that was why we aren’t supposed to grind aluminium. I knew it was a no-no, but nobody had explained why before!
and how will you dress your grinding wheel, never seen anyone do it, if you then grind some steel, would that do it? or do you need some dressing tool, curious how you going to take this advise

Not the aluminium ones, just crack the plastic off and that’s what ya get. I’ve always been happy with rads though, $5-10 in one piece always seems pretty decent to me?
Can I scrap a boat? The place in my city. They don’t even look what’s in your trailer. It just goes off weight. The place is sketchy.

Oh just pouring aluminium ingots? Well the weight isn’t worth more because it’s just a different shape, but it would be the highest grade because it’s clean
What about copper plated lead? How do I seperate it?
I’m not a chemist, but I think the copper will dissolve in a muriatic acid + hydrogen peroxide solution and that should leave the lead if not left too long. It would have to be a big operation to justify the cost though.

Aluminium is 13 on the periodic table and steel/iron is 26 so you know aluminium is half the weight of steel.
I keep finding either aluminium extrusion or zinc... Never a decent quantity of alu in one go lol
the periodic chart does not work that way.
When ever I get a stubborn piece of steel on aluminum I just take a Sawzall or grinder and cut around it !
I just hit it with a hammer till it comes apart 😂

Bunch up the blinds and cut the middle section put at least

I've heard that taking the soda cans and cutting out the tops and bottoms pay more true or false
On rads watch out for Audi's and Benz's the trany cooler is a precious metal not Al. Should be 80$ pound. Take a large screw-driver and move those clips off the rads, some trany coolers are Al some are steel core Al.

Most scrap dealers will have a hand held scanner to read the metal type....if not take it else where.....and out of the closet it will come !
