  • Hello friends ! Today I want to take apart and melt down an old battery. I used this battery when pressing cans and it failed. I'll take it apart, remove the electrolyte and neutralize the acid. I will melt the resulting lead and pour a cube. Happy viewing

That grey stuff you smacked off was Lead sponge (Lead metal). The reddish brown stuff is Lead Dioxide (PbO2) which can be reduced to Lead metal with charcoal. If Lead is what you are after. Lot for wasted Lead.
Also the sulfuric acid you neutralized, could have been recycled and concentrated into a useful chemical.

That stuff that you knocked off the cell grids is actually lead. It's lead sponge. The grid just holds it in place and they use it because of the enormous surface area compared to solid lead. So that is all lead splattered all over where you beat it out of the grids.

I remember my first battery break down...what a mess! It was everywhere. Then a couple years later I became a contractor and had to be certified as a lead renovator. Learned some pretty scary stuff about lead. What I didn't realize at the time was all the clay-like stuff between the lead wire mesh is actually lead sulfate and lead oxide in the paste and slurry. I flung it all over like in this video. I was severely contaminated and spread lead contamination everywhere. It really does damage to children and pregnant woman. By all means recover the lead but play it safe. Wish I would have known.

  • @desolder75

Ugh this is definitely not worth the cost in time or damaged health. All of that black lead sulfide sludge spattered everywhere will need to be cleaned up and sent to a recycling place. Here in the USA scrap yards will pay you $10 per battery. For that $10 you could buy 5lb of lead at a surplus metals yard. I know you stated in other comments that this was the first an only time you'll do this, but it's worth repeating: stay safe and leave the lead acid battery recycling to the professionals. They have the equipment needed to do it in a safe manner.

The material that he knocked off of the lead grids can be refined to Pb. Lead sulphate decomposes to lead at about 650C. Lead oxides will undergo various transformations and can be reduced to Lead by the addition of carbon, for which charcoal is a good source. Alternatively, the ladle charge can be heated to 650C to 700C to decompose the Lead sulphate then cool the furnace down to about 350 to 375C and skim the lead oxide off as dross and refine it separately.
    .
PS: Please, please, please do not pour any molten metal into a cold mold. If there is any moisture present, you will not like the results and you will be lucky if you only end up in the hospital. Mold and ladle explosions are not pretty at all.

This would only work if your "screen" was heated to well beyond the melting point of the lead... but screening methods aren't used because they're problematic. Even when molten, metals don't like to flow through a screen. On a normal pour, extra metal is melted and any moulds are filled after the dross is skimmed from the surface - the extra metal is then poured into a blank for future use. This method allows a casting without impurities as the impurities always end up in the blank. Best wishes!

@@MaxGiganteumhow about melting the metal by heating a closed steel container and collecting the gas through a hose connected to another container with water in it?
Saw someone do this to collect fumes from melted plastic to make crude fuel.
In this case it could collect the gases and avoid air pollution.

I have no unreal fears of working with Pb I have worked in the secondary Pb world for almost forty years . This video scares the crap out of me expecily hearing the kids in the background. This individual has exposed himself and those around him to multiple heavy metals, including arsenic and cadmium. How were the wastes handled ( contaminated acid ,seporators, oxides)? These will remain dangerous to anyone who contacts them. Please leave this to those who are qualified and follow safe work practices. 😢

Thanks for sharing the procedure. I had some old batteries ans I'd never did it becouse to extract the lead part for melting, you have to do a lot of "dirty" work before, managing healtly and environmently hazardous things... and at the end you have a lot of dangerous trash to face with.. These considerations make me the decision to give batteries to a recycle center.. the low value of lead does not justify all this work in my opinion... 😀

The new chemicals law in the EU makes it practically impossible to buy hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
So don't waste sulfuric acid, clean it by filtering. You can dilute it with water (remember: acid is added to water) or concentrate by boiling off water. Batteries usually contain approx. 13% sulfuric acid.

22 rimfire uses lead for the bullets. They are only good for 20K rounds or so. That's about 6 times the number of rounds that a rifle using jacketed rounds lasts. Lead doesn't wear a barrel, not cleaning the barrel does the damage.

I agree with the people that think this is not worth it. Batteries sold to recyclers are any where from 5 to 7 dollars. That ten lb. Chunk is worth about ten. That's just the cash value. You then have to worry about all the toxic waste you create. Then hope you didn't get contaminated yourself.
