I watched the whole series in one night, I really liked it. You know any true story is going to be embellished some, but the letters….just down right creepy! I first thought the watcher was Jennifer Coolidge character, maybe because she wanted to keep selling the house for commissions? But I’m pretty puzzled.
I actually think her character that's roughly based on one in real life might of been one of them, a real estate agent was a suspect but couldn't proven. It's likely that it was a whole bunch of the neighbours, unhappy that they were going to be doing renovations. It's safe to say everyone is the watcher 🤣
The first 5 or so episodes where downright gutwrenching, watching the family spiral out of controll was hard to watch. I rarely get THIS invested in a series. Loved it! I 100% thought it was Jennifer as well. Made so much sense. Well... untill she moved it lmao!

I thought that the series was tremendously well done! The tension just builds and builds, and the non-conclusive ending was perfect, imho. I always enjoy Bobby Cannavale, and this was no exception. The whole cast was great, I thought. What a treat to see Mia Farrow!
It was fantastic! I loved the ending as well and took away that everyone was the watcher in a sense because they were all obsessed with the house in their own way, making it a nightmare for anyone living there. I loved watching the father character turn from victim of the house/neighborhood to perpetuator of the abuse once he “lost” the house. It reminded me of LOTR and how the greed for the ring corrupted anyone who wore it and changed them permanently.
I have been a little obsessed with the true story, especially since Westfield is only about 30 minutes from where I live in NJ. Did you know that Charles Addams was born in Westfield and a house in the town was the inspiration for the Addams' family mansion?
I loved the series! Full of twists and turns. The true facts tweaked just enough to make the series watchable. The episodes directed by Jennifer Lynch were especially good.
Imagine the watcher was just some teen with way too much free time, and one day years later he’s just scrolling through Netflix, and comes across an entire Netflix show dedicated to the times he pranked a family? Funny thing is that could be a very real possibility💀

This is a truly creepy story. I was going to watch the series because of Mia Farrow, but now I´m even more curious. Thanks for the summary of the true story.
My ideal scenario going forward would be someone really badass and fearless moving into the house, someone so threatening that the "watcher" has to start feeling afraid instead. Would make for a good plot twist in a TV series, but unfortunately I doubt it will happen irl.
The letters are creepy but the last one almost makes the watcher come off as corny and not threatening with the "all hail the watcher!!" 😅 also awesome video!
I really enjoyed this, yes some things had been changed or dramatised from the real story but let's be honest there wouldn't be enough of the real story to make a 7 episode series and wouldn't be as entertaining, but I feel even with the changes it never took away from show because it still carried across most of the true story, just with their spin. For a true story with no actual resolution I feel it doesn't matter if the show embellished some facts (like them not living in the house in real life or mixing a few real people together) for the sake of entertainment I think they made the right choices personally. Also Jennifer Coolidge had me in stitches everytime she was on screen.
One of the main lies in the TV show was about tunnels in the basement, and someone entering their home. That seems to all be untrue. To me that would be the scariest part of it all if it were true. I mean anyone can write creepy messages to people.
Did anybody else ever end up watching Spiral ("from the book of Saw")? I thought the voice of The Watcher sounded EXACTLY like the voice used for Jigsaw & I have no further comment lol, I just thought it was kinda cool/interesting!

Before I get into the truth that you're about to tell versus the movie, I wanted to let you know that my aunt and uncle lived in Westfield New Jersey. They lived about five minutes from the actual house where it happened. So my aunt lives there in the 80s and 90s may be a little bit longer than that. They did not live there in 2014 when the letters were received at the current owners house. I just got off the phone with her and she told me that she drives by that house all the time even though she has left the area she goes back there. She said the only thing that she knew and remembered from when she lived, there was that a man had killed his entire family and disappeared. She told me that years later, the husband was found remarried to someone else in another state. She also told me the man was very religious. She said it's been so many years and will look some more stuff up ans get back to me
I liked the mystery aspect of it. I didn’t like the ending. I enjoy the idea of who done it, but with some form of resolution at the end, regardless of what the real events are. I get what they were going for with the ending but it just didn’t work for me.
Super captivating series, I thought some stuff was a little sloppily done but overall they did an amazing job of making me feel as paranoid and confused as the characters themselves
I love your true story experts. I'm not sure if you've seen Blackbird but I would love your take on that true story as well as Sylvia Likens. I feel her case was made into two movies that have been trying to get the story across but did not do her justice.
The show succeeds where it stays closer to the “real life” exploring the idea of helplessness in a situation where you do not know who to trust or feel secure in your home. Where it stumbles is lazily throwing out potential supernatural elements and being unable to reconcile them (within the context of the show) with the more effective elements of the show, namely the character study of the family and neighbors. Also, people do seem to overlook that the Watcher(s) are identified in the show, it is only unresolved from the perspective of the family, which is why a big part of the last two episodes is exploring the difficulty of moving on, or finding the “why” from their perspective. It’s only an open ended ending from the perspective of the family.
The real story has intrigued me for a while now, it is the stuff of horror movies. The show was interesting, I didn't love it but did binge it. I would say the entire preservation society was in on it and the sheriff and realtor used the watcher's shenanigans to their own advantage.
Yeah I totally agree about that theory! I’m glad it was only 7 eps and they didn’t stretch it out, too many eps for not conclusion can feel a bit harsh haha
The watcher is a show where frequently a house is almost sold, each time for *cash*, and nobody seems to thinks that is odd. It is not the only example, what a mess of a show.
Obviously, since the grandfather was watching, supposedly according to the letters, in the 1920's and father in the 1960's, would put the age of the person in their 30's - 40's at that time. Just the letters alone seem to be from a younger writer. Only 1-2 involved my guess. Someone that had time to do it, in that age group.

I almost stopped at episode 3/4 I found it to be very boring/gratuitous BUT the last episode was pretty good. Overal I really only enjoyed the first & last episode
Has everyone ruled out maybe he or she was never watching from the outside but using something to watch on the inside, the real family installed cameras on the outside, hired a PI but maybe they shouldn’t be looking for someone but something. My guess is there could be hidden cameras/mics scattered throughout the house, giving the stalker the chance to watch from somewhere else.. you can’t catch someone if they are watching from a distance. And let’s be honest this was 2014 wasn’t that long ago, it wouldn’t be far fetched if the person live completely in a different area or state, broke in the house at one point put hidden cameras in, and just sat at home like a creep watching them, and it wouldn’t have been difficult to just go to the post office to mail a letter
I do t get how anyone could think the father mailed the letters to himself. What would he gain? He sold the house at a 400,000 loss , his family was frightened.
I live 20 minutes from there beautiful neighborhood. It’s also the town for the infamous John List who kill his whole family in his house.. But watcher is very famous! Great review

Actually theres an article (once I find it from the njnews) the chief of police confessed to writing these letters. I LITERALLY JUST READ IT 2 DAYS AGO! so.... When I find it again I'll send the link
Only the first two episodes are worth it, then the series goes downhill. It becomes so preposterous, and the red herrings are so numerous, the plotholes so huge, that you will want to bang your head on the tv screen. The only saving grace is the acting of Bobby Carnevale, Mia Farrow, Jennifer Coolidge and Margo Martindale. I would recommend watching the first two or 3 episodes and make up the rest of the story in your head.
I just watched it amazing at first I thought it was pearl but when Karen saw them it wasn't pearls figure so now I'm confused and wondering who it to right now I think maybe Roger cause he was obsessed with the house but I also suspect Dean because in the last few episodes he obsessed over the house and in the last scene with him you can see the new owner getting a mysterious letter and Dean just watches so maybe he lied about it cause he did need therapy because of the house and it doesn't work so maybe he did it without realising and his mind has adopted the watcher as an alter ego to escape from stress as he wouldn't remember it.
I think the watcher isn't JUST the person who wrote the letters. The person who wrote the letters was likely a neighbor who was probably a meth head who couldn't stand the noise of the renovations and snapped.
why the hell would someone be so obsessed with sending these letters to a random couple moving in and claiming that its from a mysterious watcher? it seems a bit too elaborate to be a prank by a teenager, but im not gonna say 'no' to that theory, that one seems the most reasonable!
No pressure, I am just extremely curious about your view on this series. It could be a great topic for your "Does this offend you?" as it is pretty controversial. Dahmer vs. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
It was Pearl and Jasper. Just because ppl say he was nice and let Jasper in their house, doesn't mean anything. The ferret gets killed after Jasper isn't allowed on the lift. The letter is textbook Pearl. It's manipulative and controlling like her. Just because ppl appear nice, doesn't mean they are in the dark.
If you think it about now “the watcher” is probably dead I mean this was decades ago and it’s 2023 I don’t think “the watcher” is a thing anymore my opinion. But, It would be cool to find out he or she was this whole time oof scary
@@spookyastronauts except no ferret murder, no John Graff, no cop/real estate agent affair, no rumors of a blood cult. The Ode to a House stuff was real though.
I knew this story so long ago prior to this series coming out that's why I didn't watch it I never believed it. I believed it was a hoax so it ruined any chance of me watching it. They were financial obligations they weren't able to meet and also required to have that as their domicile these notes kept them from the latter. Cameras were available in 2014 as well.
You know you could’ve did some more “remodeling” and “accidentally” destroy a low bearing wall may be a little electrical fire you know since they won’t let you demolish it Your house that you paid for and now can do anything you want with
Does anyone remember a movie with a similar plot? This family moves into a house and start receiving letters from someone but the stalker dresses up in a crow or owl costume? I believe it was based on the same event.
To your final point : I would agrue that in such cases, the true case is always more harrowing & baffling than the fictional one. Ya' know, 'cause.. IT ACTUALLY HAPPENNED.
@@spookyastronauts Sweet, I'm glad to see we agree. But don't worry, I fully get what you were saying as well. Although it would seem that reality, especially nowadays, is often stranger than fiction.

I watched it all in one night! Creepy! I think it is the real estate lady.
What happened to the house after the last letter? Does someone live there at the moment?
i believe they got another renter, and recently they sold it
Why didn't they point a hidden camera at the postbox?
I never thought of this!!! Why didn’t they have monitors near the road !!! Duh
I think they did, but in the true story the mail was processed locally, no one dropped it off
Only the first two episodes are worth it, then the series goes downhill.
It may be cliche, but my first thought was someone living on the property similar to Parasite.
I honestly think everyone’s in on it in the neighbourhood
Based on the show i feel like it had to be ROGER. great summary!!
oooo
I was thinking about buying a house but now after watching this video... I can't take that chance... 😧
eeek!
I had a few watchers in my life. Not my cup of tea. Cool comparison video. Halloween franchise ranking or review would be a fun video idea 🎃
that was my last video uploaded it last week :)
It made me feel like who ever was involved in the LLC started a scheme to repeatedly sell high and rebuy low to make a profit from the home.
i always feel like... somebodys watchin me!
Was the underground tunnel real?
I dont believe so, there was no info on that.
The person who wrote the letters was likely a neighbor who was probably a meth head who couldn't stand the noise of the renovations and snapped.
but the house received a letter before they moved in ?
why the hell would someone be so obsessed with sending these letters to a random couple moving in and claiming that its from a mysterious watcher? it seems a bit too elaborate to be a prank by a teenager, but im not gonna say 'no' to that theory, that one seems the most reasonable!
Any plans on doing a video on Dahmer?
No pressure, I am just extremely curious about your view on this series. It could be a great topic for your "Does this offend you?" as it is pretty controversial.
Dahmer vs. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
I was watching this show last night
At one point I thought it was the daughter because she didn't want to move away from all her friends
not very neighborly of her!
Same!
ooo i didnt think of that, but in the real story they only moved across town .. so couldnt have been her
No wonder this show reminded me of AHS sooo much!
yeah that's the Murphy in it haha
It was Pearl and Jasper.
Just because ppl say he was nice and let Jasper in their house, doesn't mean anything.
The ferret gets killed after Jasper isn't allowed on the lift.
The letter is textbook Pearl. It's manipulative and controlling like her.
Just because ppl appear nice, doesn't mean they are in the dark.
This could be because the DNA from the letter was of a female. I feel like they are part of the cult. There's multiple watchers.
If you think it about now “the watcher” is probably dead I mean this was decades ago and it’s 2023 I don’t think “the watcher” is a thing anymore my opinion. But, It would be cool to find out he or she was this whole time oof scary
I still think it's the family themselves. Or maybe an 'acquaintance' if you catch my drift. Can't 100% rule out prank/hoax though.
Of course he had to make a ton of stuff up. A couple letters that anyone would have just thrown away wouldn't be enough to sustain a ten hour show.
to be honest it was pretty close to the truth, i was surprised
@@spookyastronauts except no ferret murder, no John Graff, no cop/real estate agent affair, no rumors of a blood cult. The Ode to a House stuff was real though.
John Graff was based on a true story, but had no connection to the letters.
I remember this story, interesting, haven't seen the show yet. I hate when they change the true story, why change number of kids, etc.
You know you could’ve did some more “remodeling” and “accidentally” destroy a low bearing wall may be a little electrical fire you know since they won’t let you demolish it
Your house that you paid for and now can do anything you want with
Does anyone remember a movie with a similar plot? This family moves into a house and start receiving letters from someone but the stalker dresses up in a crow or owl costume? I believe it was based on the same event.
Yes! The crow costume was so creepy.
Ooo what was it called?
@@spookyastronauts I feel dumb... the movie is called... The Watcher but it came out in 2016
So the new owners are ok?
no idea! its just been resold!
To your final point : I would agrue that in such cases, the true case is always more harrowing & baffling than the fictional one. Ya' know, 'cause.. IT ACTUALLY HAPPENNED.
oh of course, i mean that goes without saying
@@spookyastronauts Sweet, I'm glad to see we agree. But don't worry, I fully get what you were saying as well. Although it would seem that reality, especially nowadays, is often stranger than fiction.
I liked it but I was kinda disappointed that there was no twist in the end that confirmed some sort of satanic cult lol
hahah
HAS to be the wife or husband come on. There’s no way they know all this info about telescopes and whatever else unless they were doing it themselves. Has to be an insider of some sort. The house was being watched 247 how do you get away with that
