  • Wiener Staatsopernchor
    Wiener Symphoniker
    Thomas Hampson, baritone solo
    Nikolaus Harnoncourt, conductor
    Vienna, 1988.
    Con sottotitoli Italiani :-)
"Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt,
    sondern die zukünftige suchen wir."
    *
"For we have no enduring place,
instead we look for the future one."
    Hebrews 13,14
"Siehe, ich sage Euch ein Geheimnis:
    Wir werden nicht alle entschlafen,
    wir werden aber alle verwandelt werden;
und dasselbige plötzlich in einem Augenblick,
zu der Zeit der letzten Posaune.
Denn es wird die Posaune schallen
    und die Toten werden auferstehen unverweslich;
    und wir werden verwandelt werden.
Dann wird erfüllet werden das Wort,
    das geschrieben steht.
Der Tod ist verschlungen in den Sieg.
    Tod, wo ist dein Stachel?
    Hölle, wo ist dein Sieg?"
    *
"Listen, I'll tell you a secret:
    We won't all die,
but all of us will be transformed,
suddenly, in the blink of an eye,
at the time of the last trombone.*
    For the trombone will sound,
and the dead shall rise again, immortal,
    and we will be transformed.
Then the saying that was written
    will come true:
Death has been engulfed by victory.
Death, where is your sting now?
    Hell, where is your triumph?"
    1 Corinthians 15, 51-55
"Herr, Du bist würdig zu nehmen
    Preis und Ehre und Kraft,
denn Du hast alle Dinge erschaffen,
und durch Deinen Willen haben sie das Wesen
    und sind geschaffen."
    *
"Lord, you are worthy to receive
    praise and glory and power,
    for you made all things,
and by your will they have their way of being,
    and are your creatures."
    Revelation 4,11
This is a rather dated TV broadcast, so I thought it's okay to post here. If there is any copyright infringement, please let me know and I'll take it down.
Bible translations from Luther to English are my own, though.
*(I know it's mostly translated as trumpet and that sounds more impressive, but chez Brahms it definitely says "Posaune", so there.)

In German Stadt and Statt are historically one word: "The sense 'town, city' for G. Stadt is a late development from c.1200 when the term began to replace Burg" [Cambridge Dictionary of English Place-Names]. That's why Statt can be used to mean 'city' in very traditional texts.

The German text is taken from New Testament book of Hebrews 13:14. The original Greek uses the word "polis" which mean "city." Hence the translations of "city" are simply passing along the intent of the original text.

    7:50 - 8:05 = best moment in the whole requiem. :)

No one can truly understand this until they've heard it in the original Klingon.

Note also that Brahms used the obsolete 'hie' instead of 'hier'. Actually statt doesn't even mean 'place' in modern German, it means 'instead'. For place they now say "Platz, Stelle, Ort", and "Stätte" in some contexts. Sorry for being such a nurd, just thought you may be interested.

Actually it's a verse from the Bible (Hebrews 13:14): 'For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come' (King James Version). In German: 'Denn wir haben hier keine bleibende Stadt, sondern die zukünftige suchen wir (Lutherbibel)'. The Greek original also has "polis", which means 'city'. So it's about a city.

I Love Brahms Requiem!! It's so beautiful!! I saw the performer at 1:17 singing and I thought "Man I can't wait to sing Like that!" I don't care how long it takes me, some day I want to be classically trained and sing with that kind of control and power! I have an INCREDIBLE passion for choral music and opera. I'm going to music school soon... Any Suggestions?? I hope to not only train vocally but also write and compose music... O By the way I am 20 Years Old :D Pretty rare I know...

How have you been doing with your wish to be a classical singer?

@MadamePetrarca No problem. :-) My Italian's not that great, but like you, I noticed the cittá. You'd be amazed how many tranlations get it wrong.
Yes I absolutely love it too. I's so apocalyptic. And I only just noticed this recording must have been made about the same time I sang it with my school choir...

Well yes, exactly. That's why I DIDN'T use city, like so many others. Gli sottotitoli italiani sono fabricati della stazione TV. Er, you're welcome to correct my Italian on that sentence, but I didn't do the subtitles. :-D
