I like how the drill sergeant tried to rationalize things by saying what I'm teaching you might save your life while literally trying to force them into the path of oncoming machine gun fire against their better judgment That's insane
My mother once met an old man, he was in the Finnish war in the Soviet army. They stormed the machine gun, all lay down, and then they were taken off one by one. He did not lie down and ran to the machine gun until he fell almost under the very parapet of the machine-gun trench. He survived. Sometimes you MUST run to the machine gun.
It is also the right choice. If the machine gun keeps you suppressed and locked down the enemy can easily flank and kill you. They are blind in the trench. You got to keep moving even when every instict tells you to stay down and hide. War is insane. The fields of battle is no place for the living. All those traversing its barren wasteland consider themselves to be dead.
As someone who's in the infantry its better to push a muchine gun than to wait till its not shooting. They flank and prep to throw grenades while you wait for firing to stop. If anyhting throw smokes and plan an attack.

@Rockwell Rhodes The issue in this case is he didn't know what he was talking about. If you get fixed in a position like that trench you can be flanked and wiped out.
