Your thoughts about happiness are the same as mine, haha. I definitely feel better when I'm pessimistic and pleasantly surprised rather than optimistic and disappointed
This is a great idea for a reading challenge. You could even do a week/weekend one and on days you have less hours (say 4 & under) you can have a little fun activity you have to do, where you can talk to us while discussing what you read - like baking/cooking, doing a small puzzle, etc.
I love this vlog! I’m a mom to an autistic non-verbal toddler, and I absolutely love it when there is representation done well in fiction - I’ll definitely have to pick this one up. 🙂
Oh my gosh, YES! I think this is my favorite book of the year so far and I’m so glad you loved it 🤩🙌🏼 and all of your commentary is SPOT ON. I had nearly identical thoughts and emotions while reading. Angie Kim is a genius!
You have convinced me! Put this book on hold with my library. Really appreciate your insights and feelings regarding the story. And this was a fun video concept!
when you mentioned how the main character had the police change the way they spoke about su*cide, it made me recall how in Stephanie Soo's video on Coco Lee, she said that "coco chose to leave" and I think that is such a gentle, kind way to talk about su*cide. like with this book, no one "commits" to being in a circumstance that the only viable way out of it is to d*e. I've always been so upset over the victim-shaming mentality some people seem to take when discussing such a hard topic as su*cide, it's very refreshing to see that a main character is making a point to shift that negative narrative. ive been debating on putting this book into my tbr and your video has convinced me to go for it!! 🧡🧡
I read this earlier in September and it completely hooked me. I totally agree that it would be a great book club discussion. I’m not in a book club, but my husband and I had a great discussion about the different themes in this book, specifically regarding language and communication. Also, regarding audiobooks, I cannot listen to audiobooks at 1X speed. They speak way too slowly. And I get it. Voice actors typically get paid for the number of hours of the finished product, not on a job by job basis. So it’s in their best interest to speak slowly and clearly. But it’s in MY best interest to crank it up to 2.5-3x speed. 😂
I love this video and the idea of it and would definitely love for you to continue with it. My favorite part is the really in-depth way you explained the book and how it made you feel. I really felt like I was in a book club discussion and this book is definitely on my TBR now ❤
I loved Miracle Creek so I'm excited to read Happiness Falls. I have that same Strand hat - it is the best! Especially now in the rainy weather - I'm in Portland, OR. ❤
I’m so glad I managed to get my hands on this book from my library. My next read is definitely going to be this book. Thank you for this wonderful reading blog and I had enjoyed this style of video. It helps us to deep dive into some of the topics in the book and your thoughts on them. ❤
I read Happiness Falls in one day, although I did skip most footnotes, I liked this book so much that I think it ruined my reading experience of Miracle Creek (which I read second) because I kept comparing it to this one. I did want more from the ending but I loved the family dynamics in this one
Honestly, gabby, u are one of my favorite book youtubers, so I'd watch any kind of videos u put on your channel. I'm definitely gonna be checking out this book after watching this video.
You make me want to read this immediately! I just watched a movie called, “Past Lives”. I highly recommend it for you to watch. It’s about a Korean boy and girl who are friends, and then the girl immigrates to the United States.
Hi Gabby! Loved this video! I wanted to say that I think it's a capricorn thing to be pessimistic/realistic when approaching things because I was explaining this to someone that I love being right so much that I don't mind thinking things are bad and they are because at least I'm right 😅 I also wanted to recommend Yolk by H.K. Choi! It has sisterhood, korean rep, and it covers hard hitting topics!
I saw a video where you look at the screen time you have during that day and you have to match it and replace it with reading time. I love this video! I enjoyed Miracle Creek and will have to read this one now!
You’re making me VERY excited to read this book! It’s on my shelf waiting for me from BOTM. I loved hearing all your thoughts on it- so much truth. Also, I love when beenie/cap Gabby comes back around! The first videos I watched from you, were in the winter of I think 2019 and you had your hat on for all of them and I just have fond memories of finding your channel and remembering you wearing it 😂
Love this video! I put a hold on the audiobook on Libby, even though this is not typically a book I would read. At the end of your video you talk about the author saying to look back at your life and see all you have accomplished and strived for. I started to agree, but then thought of my dad that passed away and my cat and I think this can only be happiness with material things or if you haven’t lost someone. I’ll still read the book based on your enthusiasm!
I’m like you, I’m pretty pessimistic. It helps me appreciate the good things no matter how small And yes! Would love to see another video like this. So fun!
YES PLEASE to another video like this one!!! I loved it. And you convinced me to get the BOTM version of this book, but also, to read Miracle Creek first. I've had that on my tbr for years, I'm gonna start with that one and read this after at some point 🤗🩷
Cool idea for how long to read great vlog as always Gabby! Been raining all day today and tomorrow supposedly will be more autumn rain. ☔ 🦇🪦👻🕸️🦊🧚🍄📚🥧🍎🎃☕🍂🍁
Hey Gabby! I did really love this video! Moving around the house was fun! You always do something to add to your videos! You read so fast! I love seeing what you eat as well. I think I would really like avocado toast. I don’t eat well and I know I need to. Anyway, I would like to see this style of video again. It’s about time you do a video with you playing the guitar again as well! 😃
Wait you watch BIG BROTHER?! Oh man yessss this season has been so good! And of course Love Is Blind 😅 the book sounds great, I'll have to keep an eye out for it!
I read this right before your video came out. I hated it lol. 😅 But listening to your reasons, I can appreciate why you like it! This book's writing really reminded me of Andy Weir, so if anyone enjoyed The Martian or Project Hail Mary (which I didn't love), I think they might really like Happiness Falls.
Loved this style of video so so much!! Now I want to read this book but I’m scared because I remember not loving Miracle Creek. But my taste is much different now so I might give it a try! ❤
I think I read somewhere that depending on where you live, committing suicide or even attempted suicide is actually a crime. Some laws consider that to be murder or attempted murder. Again, depending on where you live you could even be arrested for attempting suicide (take what I said with a grain of salt, I have no idea if this is actually true, but if it is then it explains why police say "commit" suicide as if it's a crime.)
Hey Gabby, not to nitpick but a lot of autistic people prefer identity first language (autistic person) instead of person first language (person with autism), which you used in the video. Obviously every autistic person can call themselves whatever they want, but this is the general rule. If you (or anyone reading this) want to educate yourself/learn about why we prefer identity first language regarding autism (it can be different for other disabilities/mental illnesses), I suggest the article "Identity first language" by the Autism Self Advocacy Network. Great video! /gen
Hearing that Grandma's point of view of pessimistic optimism....it resembles to toxic positivity. Telling someone who might be going through their share of struggles that why are you being so upset see that other person, they have been going through worse so there it kinda invalidates the feelings of the person who has been suffering....hearing you talk about pessimism felt different. I too consider myself a pessimist...keeping our expectations low so no failure can wreck us too much. But of course there are some exceptions.
Honestly, I'm considering reading this since I had initially found out about this book. I'm just not the biggest fan of how Kim chooses to go down the eugenist route with the Autistic (amongst other disabled characters) Characters in Miracle Creek.
Love your videos , I get most of my book recommendations from your videos ..... and the " ummm , maybe not " lol ...... love your " skull" blanket on the bed ..... where can I get one ..... can skulls be christmas - ey , eater - ey ? Lol , add in some colored glitter and skulls can go with any season ( IMHO ) ...lol
Yes being grateful for what you have instead of thinking on what you don't have. I need to work on that and it is biblical concept. Not trying to preach but prosperity preachers have given a bad light on Christianity. When Jesus was here he was not rich and taught being grateful and giving to other in need.🙂 Be blessed.
i’m confused at the fact that you didn’t mention Angelman syndrome at all but did mention autism. they are two totally different things and Eugene has both. i can’t tell if you just didn’t notice? Mia definitely talks about it at multiple points and it’s a really important part of the book. you should look into angelman syndrome!
Hi, congratulations for your reviews. I was really struck by the beauty of "Motion Detection", a thriller book that I found by chance on Amz I highly recommend it!
Your thoughts about happiness are the same as mine, haha. I definitely feel better when I'm pessimistic and pleasantly surprised rather than optimistic and disappointed
Dear Gabby, i never thought about the word ‘commit’ in the way u described but how interesting and very true
This is a great idea for a reading challenge. You could even do a week/weekend one and on days you have less hours (say 4 & under) you can have a little fun activity you have to do, where you can talk to us while discussing what you read - like baking/cooking, doing a small puzzle, etc.

15:20 -16:40 same girl same😩
I'm most definitely adding this book to my tbr!
I understand what you mean… my motto has always been “HOPE for the best but EXPECT the worst.”
The quote you brought up at the end of the book intrigued me to read the book I could use a book right now with a message like that.
ahhh this is probably my favorite book of the year so far, glad you loved it! the author is such a sweetheart too.
Yes ahhh it’s so good!! 🥹🥰
Omg at the start I heard “it’s Gabby welcome back to my jail.” my ears aren’t working properly lmao
when you talked about being pessimistic, I am the exact same way!
How cool that you read a new favorite for this kind of new format!
The comments on “committing” suicide are also discussed in Matt Haigs book Notes on an Anxious Planet. That’s where I first considered that!
when you mentioned how the main character had the police change the way they spoke about su*cide, it made me recall how in Stephanie Soo's video on Coco Lee, she said that "coco chose to leave" and I think that is such a gentle, kind way to talk about su*cide. like with this book, no one "commits" to being in a circumstance that the only viable way out of it is to d*e.

Loved this video, the book choice, the concept. I am totally convinced to pick this book, fingers crossed i can get the audiobook as well.
I love this video and the idea of it and would definitely love for you to continue with it. My favorite part is the really in-depth way you explained the book and how it made you feel. I really felt like I was in a book club discussion and this book is definitely on my TBR now ❤

I bought this but have been hesitant to pick it up. You convinced me. Also what's up with the candle on the ground in the background 😂
So interesting that u can listen and read it at the same time. I can only do one or the other
you’ve definitely sold me on this one!! I’m adding to Libby now
I've been anticipating this book for a while now! I really enjoyed Miracle Creek so I definitely need to pick this one up. Great vlog!
Yes!! Pls keep doing videos with the random number of hours generator. It was really fun!
I loved this video. I’m adding this book to my TBR right now. I adore all your videos. You always give me something to look forward to. 🖤
Honestly, gabby, u are one of my favorite book youtubers, so I'd watch any kind of videos u put on your channel. I'm definitely gonna be checking out this book after watching this video.
Gabby, I LOVED this video. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. This seriously makes me so happy!
i feel so justified that you listen to audiobooks so quickly, my friends always wonder how or why i do it😂
You make me want to read this immediately! I just watched a movie called, “Past Lives”. I highly recommend it for you to watch. It’s about a Korean boy and girl who are friends, and then the girl immigrates to the United States.
It’s on my watchlist 😍
My favorite movie of the year so far! Isn't it amazing?!

I do the same toast but add everything bagel seasoning before the egg :)
I really enjoyed watching. You should make this a regular thing you do in your channel!
I could def relate to your thoughts on pessimism and girlll… it’s the Capricorn in us 😂
Ran to download the audiobook, I’m so excited 🤩

And yes! Would love to see another video like this. So fun!
I also at times keep track of how long I’m reading, so I think u should do this random number generator again!
Avocado toast with a fried egg, red onions, sriracha and greens or sprouts (I like arugula) and you can’t go wrong!
Yesss! People say I’m pessimistic. I always correct them and say no, I’m realistic. 😂
This book is EXCEPTIONALLY good.
I loved this vlog Gabby, please do it again sometime x
Thanks Marlene!! 🥹🥰
i loved the concept of this video!! 🤏 and i just ordered this book 😅 i'm so excited!!!
YES PLEASE to another video like this one!!! I loved it. And you convinced me to get the BOTM version of this book, but also, to read Miracle Creek first. I've had that on my tbr for years, I'm gonna start with that one and read this after at some point 🤗🩷

I was on the fence when it came out as a BOTM pick, but you sold it for me. Just placed a hold at my library!
Watching these types of videos makes me wanna read again 😫 I'm in a slump lol.

I’d love to see you do this challenge for a week ❤️ i loved this vid :))

hope you're feeling better soon, Gabby - thx for the post tho - as always enjoyed.

that’s interesting because most mental health professionals are taught to use person first language

I completely relate to the audiobook speed, I need it to be at least 2x speed or I don’t pay attention lol.
Have to read this one
You’re “Happiness Falls” is based off on Positive Psychology. I’m actually studying it right now 😂
I feel alone about not liking avocado. I'm a butter person, I guess.
I need to try avocado and hard boiled eggs.
Honestly, I'm considering reading this since I had initially found out about this book. I'm just not the biggest fan of how Kim chooses to go down the eugenist route with the Autistic (amongst other disabled characters) Characters in Miracle Creek.

Easter - ey not eater -y £$#@ auto correct 😊
Population one is written by a young man who's autistic. Also reason I jump is by a 13 year old Japanese boy with autism. Both good reads.

If you liked the discussion about how to be happier in life, I am wondering if you would like the researcher-author Brene brown.
🥰🥰🥰
♥️♥️♥️
😍
Gabby, I am surely going to read Happiness Falls. I’m going to get it from BOTM. I can’t wait to get it. Wonderful video! I really enjoyed it.
