- ➳ I am crate training Frankie again because of the big move! I crated him 1 week before we started moving and I am still keeping him in the crate after we have moved just so he has a familiar spot to stay settled in.
So far he has been doing amazing, and I started off with the crate closed but moved to it being open so he can freely go in and out throughout the night. I would just like to say that these are my tips to train MY dog. This may not work for your dog and you may have better tips :) Just wanted to share ours

We have a 16.5 week old Aussie. Crate training him has saved us! We started from day one. The breeder didn’t think it would work and that Charlie would always cry when in it. It took about two weeks before he’d go into it without me having to push him into it. Now he will go in on command and will stay inside after I open the door and wait for the command to release. He’s amazing! Last night was the first night he went in on his own and didn’t want to come out. He was so exhausted. He is an amazing dog!
My Aussie learned how to open her crate door regularly, and gates. She was so intelligent she could unlock almost anything. Tragically I just lost her to cancer at 8.5 years old a month ago. I still cry thinking of my beautiful blue Merle. Bella Blue. Though she crated fine, she only broke out because of thunder or fireworks.. but the good news I just picked up a puppy and I have another puppy at the end of this month. Both are Aussies and one is blue Merle and red Merle. Best dogs in the world, but the pain of loosing my girl is overwhelming.
My puppies are crate trained in the I-Crate before they go to their first owners. As soon as they are weaned from Mom they will sleep in a row of crates and the crate will be sent home with each puppy. Feeding the puppies in individual crate allow me to be sure a puppy is eating or need to be wormed. During the day the puppies are taken out to play in the big yard and come back for a small meal a few times a day. I encourage the new owners to feed the puppies and some time I put a small treat in the crate so learn that the crate is their space and they are safe in it. To person so all need to relax and talk sweetly to the puppies so they grow up without becoming hyper. I go nuts when I hear someone screaming at a dog. Some puppies will be shown at Dog shows as early as 12 weeks. The crate gives them the feeling of being home even know you might be 500 miles away in a totally unfamiliar place. A Dog Show is something the dogs take very seriously and when we get back to out Hotel Room they can’t wait for that warm bowl of foot and lights out. If you think of it as “ it’s 9:00PM and finally the kids are in bed and we get to relax” you will have a much better puppy experience.
I just say Good Night and they follow each other to the crate.

My husband and I got our dog Charlie (a border collie, Australian Shepard cross) and we knew before we got him we wanted to crate train him, especially as a puppy to keep him safe, for a bed, for a den for him, exactly how you put it. There are lots of negative opinions about it (which we heard a lot) and we’ve explained it just like how you did to people, and we trained Charlie exactly the same from the first night at 8 weeks old and he ended up just going there himself (after a long time of course) I’m glad to see a video like this! Thank you! I hope others can see the positives about it :)
My aussie is a cavedog... he sleeps under things.. but when he outgrew the space under the bed or sofa (to his louldy presented frustration 😂) i got him a crate and put a blanket over it, since you cant get a cavebed for big dogs... he loves it.. the door is never shut, but If i do close it, he doesnt complain either.

We just got our first mini Aussie pup a few weeks ago. Bella also likes to crawl under the sofa to nap. She's finding it more difficult to crawl under as she's grown. I wondered if this was a common Aussie behavior? I think we'll try a blanket over the crate.
I've never liked dog crates coz I've seen the bad side of dog crates but seeing this video really made me think twice about dog crates frankie looks really relaxed to be in their etc and don't ever get nervous what works for u and ur dog works for u and ur dog everyone and their pet is different 😊

You are exactly correct, crate training is a very good thing. The crate is there bedroom safe quiet place.

I crate trained my rescue golden retriever at age six. He loved his crate, as he was a bit insecure, and it was his special safe place. Also worked with my six month old GR too. I think you did a great job of presenting this, and highlighting the many things a dog may find fearful that we might never think of.

I was walking my daughter's Aussie and she loves to run ahead of me when she gets excited, I am holding onto her leash at the time. Trying to get her to slow down. A lady suggested to me to watch Caesar M. dog trainer. From the conversation I had with this lady, she told me, when my daughter's dog is running and I am trying to keep her from going so fast, holding onto her leash, I am causing Jackita to have anxiety. I disagree, I know Jackita and when she is running so fast, she is excited. I much prefer to listen to you, who recognizes all dogs are different with their own personalities.

I have had 2 Aussies both big males we crate trained 1 of them and the other one didnt require it. Aussies are so smart.
Frankie doesn't really require it either, I just did it for his safety and his own good. Loves it now

We just started watching you - almost every day when I'm home working. We, meaning my 4 pups and I ...2 Toy Aussies, 1 Mini Aussie and 1 Pomsky...we Love Frankie! Hoping I can train these pups to go in a crate now. I love how you pointed out the safety factor and a place they can feel is their own. Thanks!! both of my dogs love their crate! One is almost 11 and my Aussie is 2. We leave their crate door open when we are home and a lot of times they will just go and sleep. It is funny though my Aussie does not want a bed in her crate. We have tried multiple types and times and she will sleep under them
I enjoy your frankie to the Moon videos alot and appreciate all the love and Care you show for Frankie. About the crate. I know there are better or worse ways to use them. But my intuition says that I shouldn't use crates. Just to put my opinion out there. There are alternatives. F.ex. My Aussie has his own bed and sits beside me in the car with a seatbelt on when I drive.

How did you leash train Frankie? My 13 week old Aussie does not want to be on leash, pulls bad. try to keep the leash by me but she just gets dragged.

This is really good advice, I crated trained mine by having it in my room, he was fine then I slowly moved the crate farther away in the next month or so. I also read that you can leave a piece of clothing with them that smells like you.

Do you have any tips for getting my male 9 month old Australian shepered to stop pooping in the house. We leave the door open so he can go in and out but he's constantly doing it...I yell no and put him outside but it doesn't so anything.

You never, ever, ever want to yell at your dog. Personally, I always present a firm tone and establish myself as the leader of the pack.
Being calm, collected and showing that you're the leader will always earn you respect from your dog
A have a aussie/ pit mixed. He's very loveable and sweet. I'm not the original owner, he's about 7 months old. He has 2 habits I'm concerned with. 1) he has accidents in house, even when he's tookrn outside. And 2) he's lways getting into my garbage. Is it too late to fix this? What can I do to get him to stop this?
Crate training has been a total life saver for us with our mini aussie, especially in the first few months when she refused to nap on her own haha. We have the same Casper bed for when she's not crated, but I was wondering if you know the brand of the bed you have inside of Frankie's crate (or where you got it)? Looks like exactly what we've been wanting to get for ours.

Honestly he was the same. He was such an angel growing up - I’m still amazed to this day
I have a 5 month old aussie and she is great with the crate. But here in Florida she doesn’t want a bed in it. She basically only lays on tile or wood. She never chooses carpet or anything surface we would think is more comfortable.
What’s the purpose of the divider? Just trying to figure out the training purpose of segmenting the crate.

I’m getting an 8 week old australian shepherd puppy february 28th! I have the 42 inch crate with a divider up. I’ve heard that if they are crying or whining when you put them in there to just kinda ignore it and let them work through their emotions on their own. I’m not sure how I feel about that, what do you think?

I would love to know how you trained him to go through your legs and other tricks. You say u aren’t a trainer but you did train your dog and I have no idea how to teach them fun stuff like through the legs and stuff
haha i mainly say i am not trainer, cause i didn't study and I have no idea how to explain how the stuff i taught him ahha but the easiest way to explain is to guide them through your legs with the treats
I had two mini Aussies and my male would put himself to bed, at 9 O’clock he’d go to bed. My female would stay up with us and go to bed when we did.

I am battling car sickness with my mini aussie. She's almost 6 months and has been a wreck whining and shaking since we got her at 8 weeks in the car. I've done the short rides, she refuses to eat or take treats in the car, windows down (In Michigan and it's like 9* today...) and puked the last two rides to town (30 minutes and she hadn't eaten for 4 hours). I finally called the vet and got some medication.....4 pills / $53! can't afford that again. I did order some Bach Rescue Remedy and am going to get some pet CBD from the MMM store next time I go. Any suggestions?
I have this right now with my Aussie. Even a 5 min drive I am not sure if we will make it all the way. All I am doing is doing tiny rides to nice places, the dog park, or a simple open space down the road that he likes. I have realized that if he is relaxed he does well, if he is standing up looking around he does a lot worse. So in my opinion its not technically motion sickness and more anxiety which gives me hope that he will outgrow it. I have purchased a spray that is suppose to help which I have been using sparingly like a 30min ride and it seems to work I think (I only did a ride that long 1x and he lasted until we got to the destination which previously caused 4+ accidents) it is called Adaptil.

You don't need a crate, your dog and, most dogs can be taught very quickly to stay on a mat. The mat has to be big enough so they can stretch/roll move around on. All of our different breed dogs over 25 years have easily learned this.

There not bad at all unless used my wrong but I understand for a long time I did not like the crate but it is aGreat thing for a dog it makes most of them feels safe some dogs will never like it but...
For his birthday one idea maybe you could get a baby swimming pool and fill it with balls.

I wish you didn't leave out putting a blanket over their crate as it makes a world of difference in them feeling comfortable. Dogs naturally seek cave like structures for safety and a blanket is amazing at getting them to feel comfortable in there. Just don't cover all sides.
Every time you say "I'm not a dog trainer" I'm like-- 😑
I never understand why so many people try to sell crates as a good thing (for the DOG - I mean, I get it why it's good for the owner! Very convenient..). Even if we assume that dogs are "den animals" who like to cuddle up in closed spaces (which, I frankly don't see often in my own dogs), it still does not justify why they would WANT to be CLOSED UP in those tiny places. Say, humans like to sit, and you are particularly found of your armchair. Now would you like to be forced to stay in your armchair, with a cage around it, hours on end, while all the World goes by? Yes, sometimes you might feel the need to relax and you might CHOOSE to sit there for that long, but isn't it reassuring to know that if you want to, you can stand up and leave? I don't think any animal instinctively chose to be forced to stay in one place - every living creature would like to have the option of fleeing or fighting in danger and be able to esscape.
I've never used crates, and I have renovated my whole living room and kitchen (alone) with a 6 months old puppy on my side. I also leave him alone in the whole apartment from day one, and he has not destroyed anything... I puppy-proofed my rooms for the first month or two when he arrived, and now he just doesn't feel the urge to go to those areas that used to be off-limit, like book shelves and plants and shoes and so on. I also thought him that while I'm away, he should just chill out - he either sleeps in his bed or on the sofa or on the carpet by the sofa while I'm gone (6 hours a day). I taught him that by always leaving him alone after having exercised him properly (now it means, free running for 1-1.5 hours in the woods) and I fed him. He is very high energy (German Shepard mix) and he is just a young puppy (9 months old) but he simply just sleeps through the hours I'm gone or chills out. The most activity I've ever witnessed from him was fetching his chewtoy and chewing it for a while (I have a puppy camera). He has learnt that nothing exciting will happen till I'm gone, and he is also tired and well fed when I leave, so why would he want to do anything anyways? This, btw, the same as what our family dogs have been as long as I can remember, and I grew up with multiple dogs. I've never heard of people crating their dogs until I moved to the UK, it's just not that people tend to do in Hungary. I'm ALWAYS so puzzled by it... even trainers recommending it, locking these highly intelligent animals in a cage, though they can very well be taught and trusted to enjoy more freedom. I'm not speaking up against providing them a "safe, den-like place", I just don't think that den should have a lock on it. :/ But this is just my opition, it's clear to see how much you love your dog and want the very bes for him.
Frankie is to happy at the dog park to waste time peeing. So he holds his blaster until he is home…. He wants to make good time at the park.
But... but.. but... the Canine Thought Police have said that crating a dog is inhumane.

No dog needs crates. I educate since 45 years dofs and have never used one.
Whining dogs ignoring in the crate is no good way. Crates are a typical American Fashion and like all fashions senseless.
No one said to ignore your dog in the crate when they are whining? You don't use crates and that is great for you. I use crates and that is great for me. There are different techniques out there. I just prioritize safety for mine

After having an intestinal obstruction scare with one of my pets, I can’t imagine *not* crate training. The fact that you can lose your dog to something as benign as pillow stuffing? Why take the risk?
