  • This little video demonstrates what I believe is a defect found in a brand-new Markins Q3 TR ball head I just purchased on Ebay. I made the Ebay purchase due to the excellent reputation of this seller, and our communications prior to purchase.
I will not reveal the seller in Korea at this time, as I am in communications about a no-cost-to buyer replacement. He seems like a reasonable and honest man. I will report back once I have a new one in hand that really works.
I have read all the instructions, adjusted the tension correctly, and still find the knob unsatisfactorily loose at any setting. I have used another Markins ball head, and it did not have this issue, nor does even cheaper heads make overseas.
    I welcome comments below.

Hi David. I just received my Q3 in the mail and the surprising amount of play in the locking knob was one of the first things I noticed. Like you, it concerned me. Reading your later post I see its supposed to be that way. Fair enough, I guess, but it still feels odd...

my copy is fine, no play in the knob. I ordered mine from markins usa. If your ballhead is defective then contact your dealer or markins for refund or exchange.

Nope. Markins responded that all Markins Q3 heads 'feel' this way because they have a proprietary locking system that operates differently. They are 'supposed' to move a bit after locking. Google searches revealed other owners who all seem to be very happy with them once they got used to this.
I'll be using this head extensively in my Maine workshop mainemedia.edu/node/319 next week. I'll report back.
