I'm currently using mine as a temporary phone. Nice to have the keyboard again and great screen. Phone, email, web browser and Whatsapp all work. Web browsing can be clunky as websites sometimes come up as insecture - but you can just click to continue. It is slow and can get warm if you're not careful (too many apps open) - a workaround to cool it is to run with battery saver on. Camera is just adequate and shows the phone's age compared with today's phones. Overall it is a charming phone.
It has been the latest true Blackberry, manufactured by RIM and not by TCL. The terrible aspect of this phone was the processor, the Snapdragon 808...it really had terrible temperatures, always running hot and for this reason its performances were full of lag and with terrible battery drain. Cryptography inserted in the OS to improve the security has done the rest. I had it and used it for 3 years as my daily driver. Samsung S7 of that year already had 4 gigs of ram. Today is pretty unusable because of the version of Android ( 6.0 ) and Blackberry hadn't upgraded it to Nougat as promised, also upgrading Google apps is a problem...anyway I've loved it and I've loved it too much.
It was great design dogged by one of the worst batches of processors for the time. Though have you noticed how most phones still only have 4gb of ram? And how many drain the batteries? or all the battery bursting scandals? I wish someone could offer a custom motherboard you can swap into the Priv. New tech and efficiency coupled with design ethos.
I'm here because I was an avid BlackBerry supporter and only gave it up because all UK service providers stopped supporting it. I miss them. I miss _actual buttons_ ; so sick of virtual keyboards. My typing speed on a Bold 9900, or even further back, my Palm Treo, was far faster than anything I can do on an Android virtual board, even using sliding type-ahead. Please, someone, bring back slider phones with physical keyboards. Virtual keyboards have had their chance and FAILED.
It had a terrible processor, but it was an example of DESIGN, and real innovation. Mine eventually had a charging issue with the motherboard, but I kept it regardless. And in your hand, typing out anything, the weight and balance and grip all just feels right. I never used or wanted to use the on screen keyboard, and I still hate on screen keyboards when you have had that tactile experience of physical keys, able to feel your digits and always hit the right one. As well as abnormal symbols were always easier than fishing through menus. I really wish someone, somewhere would bring the design back. In terms of technology theres not a lot there, mechanically theres less to go wrong than these daft folding screens that crack within a year. Processors and ram in a £100 phone outpaces it now, takes up less space and power. And the real oddity I found of that phone, because it slid open, when you did drop it, you saw it move almost like a shock absorber. My heart was in my throat yet it bounced like a rubber ball. What I would honestly give for innovation like that again. Oh final note, had other side phones, 2 blackberries spanned 11 years, 6 each (near as) of flawless service. Every side phone, not even being daily drivers, 2 tops. Its left me wondering about other companies and their ethos to life span.
Hi does the Priv have a VoLTE setting so could turn on 4G calling? It could make calls on 3G before but the provider turned off 3G so need to activate 4G calling somehow but cant find it, it cant make phone calls at moment..@deepthroatNC
Great video and review, I got a Priv a while back and now it's my daily haha what is that space invaders type game in the video?? I really like the look of that :p
@michaelbrandon9791 I would recommend it, but it's not without its flaws... its a little slow compared to more up to date tech (I actually find that a little refreshing) and there's no 5G which I don't think is a big deal. As for removing distractions... its still an android device that can have most android apps. I have no social media on mine, no banking, no ebay etc its pretty much just for calls and texts with a little navigation. Thats perfect for a bit more of a simpler less distracting device :) if you want to go for more of a detox, I would recommend a 'dumb' phone where you won't have the temptation to add other apps... I hope that kinda helps!
Mine finally gave up, oddly fell on the screen, now even with a new screen theres no touch capability. A little upset as its been a faithful dailly driver. And I am loath to lose the keyboard. When you run a business nobody really understands how much that little thing actually helps.
Ngl I miss physical keyboards. I prefer the tactile feel and can type much more accurately which saves me time
i wish theres a phone like this right now 😭
You can collect these phone and can modify to make useful for day to day life

Still using my Priv for everything

I'm on Verizon and I'm thinking about picking one up for my weekday driver to reduce all the noisy distraction apps. Would you recommend it for this ?
