This is such an excellent lesson that de-mystifies something I’m not sure I ever would’ve figured out on my own. Very clear and so helpful! Thank you Dave!
Duuuuuude I've been trying (in vain) to learn these specific licks that John does all the time in live solos, but I couldn't really get a good idea of exactly how he played it. This is such a huge help!
Thank you SO much for this lesson. This was probably my fav of the series and you didn’t even cover a song but I learned so much! I’ve spent way too much time tinkering with my pedal chain and settings trying to get that crazy tone while reducing the feedback. Hearing you say don’t be afraid of the feedback and learn to play / flow with it is immensely helpful. The angle of seeing your foot on the pedal also was really helpful, I was definitely rocking my foot back and forth too quickly and it was not giving me that sound I was searching. Finally the comparison of this technique to the can’t stop play style really helped loosen up my right hand and embrace those imperfections as they add to the sound so much. Just a fantastic lesson
Agreed. I remember watching your early videos a long time ago. They really helped me learn. Glad to return to your page as I am digging back into johns stuff in more detail and an advanced level rather than beginner or intermediate.
Confession time - I am not a fan of John or the RHCP ( I don't dislike but not moved by them - age ?) but I am a huge fan of Dave Simpson and the intro jam shows why. Probably the best current guitar player I know of and deserving a much bigger audience and stage for his talents. Top man and I would love to see him live one day.
If you like Dave's into jams there is a good chance that there is some frusicante out there that you would like as well. Dave's style is very very influences byJohn. .
I'll bet you a thousand dollars it's because you haven't watched John play live, or listened to Stadium Arcadium (which is where a lot of this influence is coming from).
I love that you’re turning Article 13 negativity into a positive by focusing on technique lessons. And I believe you said Hendrix is next!! This is going to be awesome. I love this channel.
I’m late to the game here, but Mr. John F is my inspiration as well as Jimi (whom was also a huge influence on John), and this video helped me get closer to his sound in a few of hours of practice compared to the months I’ve spent just listening and playing along. By The Way (see what I did there?) my little finger and I don’t get along most of the time either. But mine is still my friend as well. Thanks for putting this up man. Saved as a fav. I keep coming back to it when I’m practicing. You f’ing rock. Keep the Frusciante Groove alive!✌️ & ❤️ 🤘😈🤘
Lol i have never played guitar but i always wanted to know what they do it create such sound..this man is really humble and sweet he made me watch half way through the video ...i m thinking of starting to learn guitar
You are a genius, but truth tell me, in detail or briefly or as you like: how did you achieve or how was the process of playing in the same way or interpreting the same techniques used by John because they are not very easy? Great video, greetings from Argentina!
Finally getting a Wah! Now visiting this video and yes it always spins me out when you start your chain at the amp lol! Also you forgot to mention that it doesn’t work unless you use your left foot.
Please please Dave, I'm practising the marvelous intro to this lesson. Could you write me down the chord changes for the backing track? I'd appreciate you even if you will not answer for a reason or another. EDIT: Leaving the comment for the algorithm and for others to read. Found the backing track is the "backing track 5 in e minor" in your own playlist! You never fail to amaze me Dave! thanks!
Hi dave, thank u for this awesome series, i was wondering if u could showcase a video with all of the different chord voicings that Frusciante uses, and describe the number system/music theory behind those chords?? Once again thank u for this series, it has been HUGE for my playing.
thx from France for your cool advices. i work on it. i love it! i have a zoom G5n, a very good multi effect, and i will build a pedal board step by step. i hesitate to buy wah or DS2 first to complete the most my G5n. any advices? wah is not so crazy on the G5n... cheers to all guitarists all over the word!!
The best users of the wah wah imho are Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, and Mr. Frusciante. Maybe one day you could go over the way Mr. Cantrell uses it if you're interested? Just a thought Dave! Love your work! Cheers!
I practicing that Dani California Trill getting better don't have the Ibanez wh10 v2 yet though but like you said the messier it is the better. I'm my opinion I think that is an important thing to learn first before getting the Ibanez wh10. Because then you'll know if your pedal chain is in the right order for the white noise sound.
I've been searching forever for a video explaining how to do this and nobody ever helped. Thank you! Also, does the first trill work with the open strings if you're in a different key?
I can do videos maybe on how he does certain thing sin his solo work but i can no loner teach songs. Look up article 13 for more on that. : ( Thank you for watching. :)
Dave Simpson Article 13 sucks, its killing the music teaching in youtube. But if you can and want to, im sure we will all appreciate videos on how john does certain things
I would love to see your tutorial on how to use the zoom on your pedalboard, i have the same one and would love to figure out how to use it for this sound!
Dave question : does a .96 MM Heavy pick of a guitar can destroy the strings if im doing this technique? Thanks again for this series dave Your awesome as always 🙏❤️
Thanks Dave! Do you know what technique John uses in the Off the Map version of the Blood Sugar Sex Magik solo? Looks and sounds incredible but I've never been able to figure it out exactly
Yeahhh! The sound he makes there at around 2:56 (ua-cam.com/video/digbYzmtlSs/v-deo.html) just gets me over the edge every time... Probably DS2, wah, chorus, reverb and daaaamn nice feedback :)
Hi Dave! awesome video again. Questiion tough.. does the Marshall jackhammer also "control/tame" the wh10 and ds2 like the golden plexi does? If i buy that will I get the same happy face that you got with golden plexi? :)
Have you tried Will Galluccio's Ensemble Crunch pedal? That looks really interesting. I currently use an EP Booster copy, which works great for compressing loud boost or drive in front of it, like you use your Golden Plexi. Looks like the Ensemble Crunch does the same thing and is key to the "John" sound.
@@thedavesimpson Great info thanks. Perhaps that will be my experience too. I really understood you when I first heard you explaining how you control the levels of your boost pedals etc. in your chain as that is what I've been doing for a number of years now, especially when I stopped using a cranked valve amp with an attenuator. Without such careful gain staging I can't really get by all that well. If I had money to burn I'd probably try the Ensemble Crunch, but it's too risky on my measly budget!
Also, I have a question for you. I’ve had a Boss DS1 since the early 90s, and it does hiss like a pissed off ASP. I’ve got mine in the loop of a Boss NS-2. It helps keep it quiet(er). Obviously, you’re in an environment where you can practice loud so your noise to volume ratio isn’t a big thing and covers up that hiss from the Boss DS-2, but, what’s your opinion on noise suppressors or noise gates? Thanks again.
I dont know if youve already made a video about this but i would love to hear some more tips on the fast right hand strumming "technique". Sometimes i feel like my pick (0.6) gets sort of caught/stuck in the strings really stopping that feeling of flow. Also i find it quite hard to hit either the D or high e strings. I dont know if its just me and i just need to spend more time with it but id love to hear your thoughts.
Hi Dave, When you talk about the plexi / jackhammer making the DS-2 and Wah behave, do you mean it's AFTER them both, but always on? ie Guitar > DS-2 > Wah > Plexi or Jackhammer? Would something like a Zvex SHO or Way Huge Angry Troll do a similar job to add a bit of grit to the clean tone? I have an SHO clone and angry troll so keen to try them. Just need Ibanez to re-release the WH10 now!! Keep up the good work & I hope you make it to a gig now he's back :)
I know you said can add the crunch on the amp but my marshall is out of action and I'm using a Fender hot rod, which is super clean, so the idea of adding some crunch with a pedal would work for me.
Can you do a pov of how you’re strumming? I have been struggling with the motion and idk if it’s the angle I’m strumming at also I am struggling with the trill itself. Are you also bending and hitting the string dead as you go down to the next string? I want to master that technique and want a solid practice plan to get it
Dave, I have a question about the wah wah, what do you have the knob set at,and do you ever use the 'bass' setting on the side of the pedal? I saw somewhere that on a couple tracks like "Naked in the Rain" John has his wah wah in the bass position.
@@thedavesimpson Thank you my friend! I've been studying all these videos and I must say it's just a total treat to get all this insight into John's rig! Thank you!
quick question Dave - if my amp tone is super clean (i have a fender tube amp), and i’m trying to replicate John’s ‘dirty/clean’ Marshall amp tone with either a Golden Plexi or a Marshall Jackhammer in order to reduce the volume jumps of the DS2 and WH10, do i still need to have the signal chain in the order shown in this vid (guitar -> DS2 -> WH10 -> other pedals)? in other words, im not sure if i should put the Jackhammer before or after the DS2 and WH10 if i’m trying to get that overall ‘dirty/clean’ tone. hope this makes sense :)
I love your Channel dear Dave. Maybe will be interesting a lesson about John'guitar style on mother's milk. In "good time boys" there's a fucking badass wah solo
Could you give me some tips on the strumming? I can do the left hand fine but I’m having some trouble with the fast strumming, I can only get your speed when I use my whole arm to strum, but I lose a lot of precision that way, but when I use my wrist I can’t really get speed consistently. I’m guessing I should just practice but maybe you have some tips to get there? Great video by the way, I’m watching through your play like frusciante playlist and it’s incredibly how in depth your videos are :)
You probably already have the strumming down since I'm posting a comment pretty late, but I thought I'd share this in case anyone else had trouble like me. His episode 21 (funk rhythm) really helped me relax my wrist when strumming. Metronome also helped me with the third lick.
One thing that helps is learning some economy picking for those licks dig downward and only up at the high E string. Then from there make the technique more strum like by playing it looser
What or your thoughts on the Matt Heefey strap and Dime's signature wah? As a crybaby goes I hear it's one of the more versatile ones. Just curious before I go dropping the hefty sum.
I have problems mostly with the part of my left hand. It is really an easy lick but its the simultaneously strumming with the right hand that suddenly irritates my left hand a lot. Is this something you experienced too? It really bothers me haha
One question, have you seen the video of Dave Lee on how he changed John's strings and do you use that technique? At minute 55:16 it looks like you could've easily broken your strings doing that. Anyways, awesome video as always :)
.. but how do you make that sound in between notes in solos like John does? You know.. the one that sounds like the guitar is clearing its throat or something.

I did too I usually keep the depth knob all the way down or slightly above. On Johns boards he puts the big muff before the wah so DS2> big muff > V3
