The Plastic Cow

  • A 34-minute documentary about animal rights, the film looks at the impact of our almost complete dependence on plastic bags, which we use and discard carelessly every day, often to dispose our garbage and kitchen waste. Not only are these bags a huge environmental threat, they end-up in the stomachs of cows, who, either because they've been discarded because they're not milking at the time or because the dairy owner is unwilling to look after them, have to fend for themselves and forage for food, which, like other scavengers, they find in community garbage dumps. Owing to their complex digestive systems, these bags, which they consume whole for the food they contain, get trapped inside their stomachs forever and, eventually, lead to painful death. The film is also a comment on the religious hypocrisy of the cult of the holy cow.

    Very well made documentary. Thoughtful, feeling, and honest. Hopefully it elicits the understanding and compassion and actions and awareness needed to start addressing and over time rectify the situation.
    The immense amount of garbage and its effects on stray/discarded and wild animals as well as, subsequently, humans is not isolated to India. But perhaps it is an important and helpful point when a nation so much admired by the world for its spirituality and colorful shrines and religious practices loses its soul to modern amenities and the illusion of money. Perhaps enough hearts and minds awaken to start the movement back to common sense and humanity.
    Well done Kunar!

      Thanks, Suzanne. Beyond now seeing every cow on the road as a ‘plastic cow’, thereby implying some level of understanding of the situation, I really don’t know what has changed for those who’ve watched the film either here or at the numerous screenings the documentary has had all over. Be it the cow, animal rights in general or the environment, I think religion is currently contributing as much to the problem as is the growing consumerism. To be revered and deemed holy, as the cow and the river Ganges are, is a curse, I think, because it causes people to view them as being beyond harm or, at least, to be endowed with an infinite capacity to heal themselves. But, as you say, I hope we can find our way back to common sense, humanity and compassion before it’s too late.

    I think it's best to operate on the cow while she's standing, rather than lying on its side, which is perhaps one of the reasons why they use local anesthesia. It's inconvenient for the cow but not painful. But, you'll be glad to know that the cow is doing very well and, in fact, gave birth to a calf in April.

    "...if they are no longer useful to us we let them go" Is that how you treat something you consider sacred?? View it only as how useful it is to yourself, and abandon it once you're done taking?
    You don't have to hold conflicting views because of religion, there is always the choice to follow what you feel is right and then align your actions to that.
    I think that's where peace comes from.
    Also, I'm taking my own advice and aligning my actions to begin the process of cutting out plastic from my life. Thank you to this documentary (and the cows in it) for that push.

    I think we must start by reducing the amount of garbage we produce and recycling as much as we can. I don't know how much better cows are in villages because plastic bags are everywhere. The only solution is to ban these bags. But, you're right, the real problem is that we just don't seem to be able to comprehend the threat from plastic.

Plastic cows is the only problem in cities, not at all in villages, where they live healthy. Its hard to educate the educated people not use plastic and its unavoidable at present.

      +PeaceProfit What a ridiculous statement. If the government of India won't clean up the garbage and implement a ban on plastics then at least sterilize all the cows and bulls so they don't keep having calves, thus preventing this cruelty to animals. If an animal, with no owner, isn't created in the first place then there is no existing animal living a life of misery. The dairy farmers should by law, have all their cattle tagged and then they could be fined for letting their cattle roam the streets, free to fill up on garbage. Where is the common sense? Certainly not in religious India. Religion ruins everything.

But, she said, there are huge barns in the countryside, where the cruelties of slaughter take place behind closed doors and the mismanagement is hidden.

    Agreed, tho, I think we have been largely "conditioned", or "taught" to ignore the truth when it becomes to tough. One would imagine that we couldn't just ignore the truth back when our life was always at stake if we simply ignored it, but now that we live in artificial luxury, we are willing to live the lie for it does not effect us as directly. In India, at least one knows what is going on and because one can see the problem, one can try to fix it. India has the best animal welfare laws in the world, although, most unfortunately, the implementation of those laws is pretty lousy.
    Sure, we do have some serious problems with waste management and, yes, there is dirt and poverty too. But, don't let that stop you from coming because if you want 'pretty' there's a whole lot of that as well. Plenty of it to leave you amazed.

    Before recycling, there is the segregation, at source, of bio-degradable and non-degradable waste. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen enough either in homes or by municipal agencies. But, having said that, many attempts are being made at various levels around the country. For instance, there are areas where plastic is being recycled to make roads. I believe a lot of the runways at airports also have recycled plastic. But, of course, given the scope of the problem, it's a long road to travel.

    Hi, I wonder if anyone can tell me if this Plastic Cow Project (more specifically the documentary) has created any institutional changes on the official level. As far as I know, the Indian government listed whale sharks as endangered species after Mike Pandey's Shores of Silence documentary. So I wonder if such a powerful documentary like The Plastic Cow has generated any impacts of this sort...

    • @GhostOfTomJoad
      @GhostOfTomJoad  10 років тому +2

      I can’t say there have been any institutional changes…yet. But, yes, that’s what the film and the Plastic Cow Project are hoping to be able to do. The film is a small part of an animal rights case currently in the Supreme Court of India. The governments at the Centre and in the states, and many governmental departments, have been made respondents in the case, which is seeking a complete ban on plastic bags as an animal rights issue. The case was admitted by the court in May 2102 and, although there wasn’t much progress at first, we’re expecting something to happen at the next hearing some time later this year. You can find more information about the case, and everything else relating to the issue, on this link www.theplasticcow.org/what-is-a-plastic-cow/public-interest-litigation.html on the Plastic Cow Project website.
      Many screenings of the film have been organised in different parts of the country, very often by people, groups and organisations that have no direct connection with the Plastic Cow Project. We’ve also just heard that the film is in the process of being declared as mandatory viewing in schools in Surat (a city in the state of Gujarat). Hopefully, this will open the door for the film to make its way into more schools across the country.

      Kunal Vohra Dear Kunal, thank you so much for taking time to reply. I really appreciate it. Could you please answer me one more question with regards to animal consumption of garbage... In this documentary, the cows are the main focus of the documentary attention. I wonder if the buffaloes also suffer from the same fate? Are the cows the only free-roaming bovine animals? I remember in the documentary, it says something like plastic contents can be found in almost every single cows, I wonder if the buffaloes also consume plastic waste?

    • @GhostOfTomJoad
      @GhostOfTomJoad  10 років тому

      Chia-ju Chang
      Hi Chia-ju, In one of her pieces to camera in the film, Clementien Pauws does say that her first experience of seeing plastic inside animals was when they did post-mortem on a buffalo, which had been sent to them by the local municipal organisation, suddenly died. So, to answer your question, yes, buffaloes too sometimes ingest plastic bags. I think any animal that has to scavenge for food will have some plastic inside them. But, to come back to buffaloes,, no, we don’t see them as much on the roads as we see cows. At least, not in cities and urban areas. In rural areas, however, one can still find buffaloes out on their own. I think owners are more careful with their buffaloes because their milk is more viable than that of cows and because, I think, they give more milk. So, in a way, they are more economically viable for the owners. Unlike cows, there’s no ban on buffalo meat, which means, except for the few male buffaloes they need for mating, etc, dairy owners sell the males to be slaughtered for either meat or leather.

    We could hope that this mentality will soon change, for if people keep thinking along the lines of self serving ignorance, then we will soon all pay the price for the actions of a few greedy people. Our fresh water is getting more, and more polluted by the day, and with companies like Coca-Cola, and Pepsi getting into the bottled water market, its only a matter of time before the only fresh water left is corporate owned. Next we will be paying for the amount of fresh air we intake daily.

We consider cows holy and protest against its slaughter yet we are world's top leather producing country. Many humans in India lives worst than these cows. Over population and lack of education what is main cause of all evils.

    The scene where the man is pushing away the calf while milking the cow breaks my heart. Dairy is not Ahimsa.

      Ahimsa is not dharma....that's Gandhi bullshit. Cows are kamdhenu ,they have enough to provide and nourish.

    What I didn't hear in this doc is any attempt of India to recycle plastics, which does not solve totally the problem but can help a lot. Believe me, I am from a country where recycling is a sucessfully reality and even a business to many...

    The problem is that humans whether in India or elsewhere see animals as secondary to their own 'needs' and have no real concern about the welfare of animals. Why is it always in 3rd world countries it is expats who are setting the pace of change with sanctuaries and looking after sick, injured and abandoned 'street' animals?.India used to be a spiritual country that gave us Buddha and yoga and Ghandi but now it is a country in deep moral decline whether in its treatment of cows or women.

    cows DO eat like goats. bewildered why over the past decade more of the cow have come to join the "scavenge" on the filthy and foul dump for their preference, rather than turning away and seeking for pasture outside the site. that's part of cow's instinct and behavior for survival?study shows cows will consistently choose leaders for their intelligence,inquisitiveness and experience. the herd mentality is evident in the documentary. but the bovines' judgement in here is just as unbelievable.

    Stop blaming the PLASTIC!!! The problem is not using CONDOMS!! If we INDIANS start using condoms it will fix half the problems our country faces. Less people, less garbage, more education, more resources...simple as that.
