What if Mary Poppins Returns Was a More Faithful Sequel?

- While Mary Poppins Returns was a hit with critics, some of it missed the mark on what made the 1964 original so special. So what if this modern sequel had stayed closer to the Disney classic? Doug Walker deconstructs, then rebuilds the Emily Blunt led continuation of the Julie Andrews masterpiece.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Iron Man 3
Y'all should rewrite the Matrix, what would be your take on the concept?
Rewrite Beauty and the Beast 2017!
Glass
Wow... I would have loved to have seen this version come to life ❤️ awesome rewrite 🙌🏻
Agreed this is amazing
I honestly teared up when you mentioned the lamp lighters going into the stars. So beautiful, I wish we could have your version.
I'm crying because this is the sequel we'll never have. Thank you for sharing :´)
RIGHT!! This is what should have happened - emotions last so much longer than that Disney formula thing. I was brought to tears several times thinking about how amazing this could have been.
If Disney adapted Mary Poppins Returns into a stage show, they should take this into account
Probably not worth crying about
NOT IF I CAN HELP IT, i am buying disney's frozen corpse, reanimate it, show him what the fuck is going on with his company and he'll help me make movies great again
@@nicplaybr1243 you're going to BUY walt disney himself? good fucking luck with that pal.
Wow...I really, REALLY enjoyed this more than the movie.
I didn't
The chase scene was still pretty cool.
So have I buddy, so have I
Your version is much more imaginative and literally felt more emotional, which was a surprise considering it is solely narration. Another great fanscript.
"And worst of all"
"Shes *good* at it"
YOU LIED.
It was practically perfect in every single way
Remove practically for -practically-
This rewrite would have made the movie actually memorable. I found it kind of amazing how quickly I forgot about Mary Poppins Returns.
Wow, that's an EXCELLENT point. It's incredibly forgettable!! I didnt realize that until you pointed it out!!
@@princessthyemis Most of the remakes are forgettable. Even the good movies that aren't remakes are somewhat forgettable now compared to the older films, but that might just be me.
I think I hear a snap in the background...
For changing the Disney formula or something...
I can't really tell... But I like this version more...
And I feel kinda odd now...
Good grief Evil Poppins, where's the six Disney stonse? I'll fix this once and far all eternity!!!
@@tommyfox854 "stonse" "far all eternity"
Mr. Critic, I don't feel so good...
“I am inevitable.”
“And I...am... the Nostalgia Critic.”

No... Monte no stay with us! Continue liking good movies instead of shtty remakes with no love!
Disney should hire you to write for them. God knows they need it.
I agree
I would watch the hell outta this! Keep these fanscriptions coming! Love it.
I thoroughly enjoyed that Doug :) I now accept your idea as cannon. I also appreciate that you used a scenario very similar to the books to save the 'step in time' of this movie
Lovely story! Would have definitely preferred this to what Disney gave us...
Great video..
Open music..Marc Shaiman from the flick itself..
All others..Kevin McLeod (MacCloud)
With sufficent scenes from MARY POPPINS RETURNS (can you imagine that?)
(plus specifically drawn pictures, credited at the end)
To be honest with you, Doug, I thought your version was pretty fucking amazing. It was a real delight, very in keeping with the spirit of Mary Poppins.
The only thing I might change would be giving that last line to Dick Van Dyke. He deserves it more, and it would be a final hint to the timelessness of the Mary Poppins character.
Dick Van Dyke definitely deserved SOME kind of cameo appearance doing his incredible dance routine
I believe this is a script that is to a far higher standard than the real one. The ending is one I approve of hugely for all kids I know, I don’t understand these days why Disney feels the need to make a happy ending for the sake of it.
Because even if the person dead people move on but only few people have memories of them even the bad memories.
Not all stories have a happy ending. ..and it not bad .
Wow amazing. Well done. I don't agree with all the details, but this story felt much more powerful than the bland borefest we got.
I liked Mary Poppins Returns, but I can't deny that this version would have been better.
May I ask why you like Mary Poppins Returns? Personally, I didn't, I felt it was underthought and under-planned, but I would love to hear your thoughts. I hope that didn't sound rude - because my intention was to see someone else perspective on the movie. There were elements I liked for sure, but overall - not that good. I hope I was not rude in asking this.
@@shalom2908 caz it's newer and has hd
Oh. Why, if I may ask, do you like this particular film so much?
Me too
@@thisisachannel7232 Does HD make a better movie when content lacks (again my thoughts, no trying to start a comment war)
You know, I think the water balloon prank at the beginning would be perfect, as the falling balloons at the start could signify trouble ahead, making the balloons soating at the end symbolizing a positive future.
you really need to write remakes for disney Doug
Yes! #disney please hire Doug Walker!
Better yet, start your own company
Disney is too powerful now ):
What a re-write, I almost teared up at the "Where the Lost Things Go" moment. So much better than what we got. And the jumping through books and drawings, brilliant!!!!
I almost cried a bit listening to that. Why are you so good at fixing things?
Is it really worth crying about?
@@dustywaynemusic6297 it got emotional at one point, at least for me. That's why I said *almost* cried. Which means it got me sad, which compared to the actual movie, did a million times more.
@@jasminflores6935 Just goes to prove how much Doug's version could resonate with the people's hearts and challenge their minds much more than the remake we got. It's a beautiful shame, really.
Wow that’s actually effective and makes it better
I liked the return of the hand drawn animation with the penguins. They actually got Disney to take a step back in time
I. Love. This.

Now how come THIS wasn't the Movie? I would go and Pay to watch THIS. Sadly, we have what Disney gave us -_-. Excellent video here.
So in essence what we’re looking at here is a similar setup to Peter Pan Return to Neverland just with a Mary Poppins Story
I can dig it
I was thinking the same thing
I forgot about that movie. I can see it.
I love this version. A little slice of life story with a magical Nanny as a sort of guardian angel. Warmed my heart to listen to this version.
This movie should've been directed by Doug Walker. It really could've been a great sequel and not one, in the same vain as Blues Brothers 2000.

*the horror*
Doug, why don't you write movies and/or tv shows?
Ikr he sounds like a natural!
Yeah? What about a show.... call it.... "Nostalgia critic".... Yeah.... Oh! And you can call yourself "Critic".....
Why didn't anyone think of that before?
Oh.
@@brunoais GENIUS I'll get to work on it immediately!
Probably only because he'd have to answer to execs and producers.
!@#%$ Doug! had me crying at 14:20! So glad you made this. thank you for making fantasies come true.
I smiled at the last line: "it was never ruined.. it just needed mending."
I honestly like this idea, and I hope Disney has a look at it even though they will never use it specifically. One thing I like about the movie and your version is Michael's grief. From what I've heard, one major difference between Traver's stories and the original movie was that she portrayed Mr. Banks as being more depressed than grumpy. I think they may have used that idea for Michael's character.
That idea actually brought a tear to my eye that was beautifully done
jeez, i'd watch the heck out of this if it was the real sequel
Not bad. In my opinion, I would've removed the bad guy entirely and not include any climax in the sequel and just have it end with the house closure but with some hope in the future, smilier to your ending. I like the idea of multiple paintings and drawings in the song. The sad thing about the animated sequence, it has great animation I just wish wasn't used for a wolf chase. I would definitely switch the paintings intro and jack's song around.
This was absolutely great! I like the trickery and small competition that isn’t a competition between Mary and Annabelle. It’s very satisfying watching Annabelle get what she deserved
Wow. That was actually really good. It was like listening a friend telling the plot of a (great) movie. Good job, Doug!
Omg... This is the best way to have done this story. I'm actually at tears by the time of reading the revised "There's No Way to Go But Up" portion.
This is a plot actually worthy of the franchise and the cast. Would have been nice for Ben Whishaw and Emily Blunt to have something more substantial to work with
The Musicals and 2d Animation bits honestly made the film for me 😁👌
True! Also, a lot of the actors were pretty good at it :)
Exactly I honestly don’t get why a lot of people bash these kinds of films without even giving it a chance
Fair enough
Sorcerer SMC
To be honest, this is what critics do. They point out the good and the bad parts of something, and tell the audience how it can become better.
I love this idea!!! It's practically perfect ^-^ very emotional, mature and satisfying. The original sequel is weird but I love how you gave us a more cohesive and realistic story which at the same time pushed boundaries (like the spinning room idea and A Cover is not a Book and the idea about playing with the stars and making shapes).
What a cool new way of doing these!!!! Seriously i love this new idea do more :-)
Also i would give anything to see your version it is so heartwarming and in the spirit of the original
It's not Practically Perfect- it's an Amazing Addition
I think the version you came up with sounds amazing, I would definitely want to watch it.
Can I just geek out for a moment and talk about how much I LOVE the idea of Poppins, Jack & Anabelle singing A Cover is Not the Book while jumping into different books/drawings/paintings/etc. while changing into different art styles???
Like, they could hop into the books where the stories Jack and Poppins were telling in the song were from then dance in the illustrations or even play with the text, they could go into a pencil drawing and animate it in a similar style as the Paperman short (Gotta bring up Paperman again cuz Disney achieved something amazing with its Meander software but hardly ever used it ever since and I'm still not over it >:( ), go into a chalk drawing that Anabelle maybe drew in the walls and reference Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious/It's a Jolly Holiday, maybe even hop into an abstract painting and see some weird shit with moving shapes?? Idk just brainstorming at this point????? And it would end with all the illustrations joining them in the bowl for the song's finale.
Idk man just.. Just the amount of potential and visual splendor this scene could've had if Disney actually did something similarly ambitious as that!
I would say your idea is practically perfect doug.
Call the Mouse! I think Walt & Mary's author would approve!
That was beautiful, Critic, and if they had done that, I would be watching it over and over again. Your version fixes the problems and I loved it!
Let's wait for the sequel
*Marry Poppins Returns Part 2*
Just Some Guy without a Mustache Mary Poppins the quickening
HIYA GEORGIE!!
Wow, I really felt something watching this. Great job!
Can someone make something with this?! Please I want to see this! Can someone animate it or something?
Would you want beautiful HAND-DRAWN animation, or CG "animation" that employs computer geeks and makes them think that they're actual artists? By the way, watch a CG "animated" film in 5 or 10 years, and ask yourself if the CG holds up. I know that traditional animation would.
@@margueritelouisearmont7409 HANDDRAWN! Like Disney Style hand drawn. I loved the new Mary Poppins movie but a huge reason why was because of Lin Manuel Miranda and the songs and the hand drawn Disney animation.
I liked Mary Poppins Returns.
But I liked this SO MUCH BETTER
YES! OMG YES! great job with this rewrite. It really does evoke the correct emotions instead of shifting the tone SO much from the first Mary Poppins. Such a great job, Doug! Seriously, I hope my channel (where I do reviews, rewrites, etc. as well) can be half as good as yours one day. Cheers!
This is practically perfect in every way.
I'm glad you fixed it I've never been a fan of Mary Poppins but these classic movies deserve better and you've given Mary what she deserved this is much better
Well done. Showing consequences and actual learning to deal with them, plus the real-world similarities and applications, this would have been an awesome sequel. Too bad we got garbage.
I actually got a little teary when you described the scene of Annabell and Michael singing no place to go but up together.
Critic, you should be writing and directing movies. This was beautiful.
He has, they're fucking terrible. But ironically, I agree that this description was phenomenal. He should pitch ideas and let talented writers script them.
wow, i would love this version. great story
NC: The cast will remain the same
One minute later
NC: Annabelle is the ONLY kid.
The other two could be introduced as someone else's kids...and then are never seen or heard from again.
He said the casting would remain the same, he didn’t say the characters would.
TheNerdyBirdyShow Yeah I wondered about that...
If I were to make this movie, I'd keep Doug's ideas, but have the all three kids and have their personalities more similar to the Darling Children or Alvin and The Chipmunks. For example, with Annabelle being the Alvin: trouble-making, sneaky, quick-tempered but really artistic, clever, humorous, creative and ultimately good-hearted and loyal to her family, with the mother's death being the _hardest_ on her and her drawings and stories were something her and her mother bonded over and with the mom's death, Annabelle doesn't want to draw and create stories because it reminds her of how her mom is no longer around and uses pranks and insults as her creative outlet until closer to the end of the movie. The older boy (I forgot his name) as the Simon/John Darling: straight-laced (but loosens up as the movie progresses), pretends to be a sophisticated adult (also loosens up as the movie progresses), a bit of a know-it-all, tends to 'parent' Annabelle and Georgie to Annabelle's annoyance, but polite, intelligent, kind-hearted watches out for his siblings and tries to keep his family together. And finally Georgie as the Theodore/Michael Darling: imaginative, sweet, naive, confused about the family situation but sensitive to them, and adores his sister's stories and drawings. That way you have the kids, but their personalities are _much more_ than just 'older boy', 'younger boy' and 'girl'. It might sound hypocritical seeing how I drew inspirations from 2 fictional sets of siblings , but that was just to give an example of how they would act if I were to make this movie.
I would just replace Mary poppins with Yondu
One really glaring flaw about the sequel we got is that, if you sit back and start analyzing it, the whole structure is a retread if the original.
Bathtub Sequence - Nursery Clean Up
Ceramic Bowl - Pavement Picture
Rotating repair shop - Tea Party on the ceiling
Bank visit and subsequent chase - Toppins Riot
Lamp Lighter Dance - Chimney Sweep Rooftop Dance
Evil Bank Villain Comeuppance - Evil Bank Villain becomes jolly
Floating Balloons - Flying Kites
Don't get me wrong, they gave it the old college try in replicating the spirit of the original but made the mistake of copying it beat for beat.
please, more of this!
You seriously need to start a series called “THERE!! I FIXED THE MOVIE!”
I would love for you to do more rewrites! This should become a regular thing
Absolutely amazing reimagining!! Well done!!!
“Get a moving room. You’re Disney you can afford it”
They already have! Have you forgotten Troy Boltons epic breakdown in movie 3
Holy crap, Doug pls do more of THIS
Very well, now I’m in tears!!
Its the Mary Poppins Sequel we deserve, but the Mary Poppins sequel we need.
its "its Not the mary poppins sequel we need, but the Mary poppins sequel we deserve"
This version would actually be a damn good follow up to the classic Disney movie-almost on par with it even!
This is actually brilliant.
In your NC review, you said that one of the biggest problems with the movie was that it had a lot of great ideas that it just never fully follows through on. If this is what following through on those ideas would've given us, then sign me the f*ck up.
I actually really liked the movie we got, but it is a little sad to see what it could have been.
I swear just hearing your idea of fixing Mary Poppins Returns nearly brought me to tears 😭
12:36 Probaly seeing her through the light from the "light fantastic".:)
"Sorry, I can't work without a house. Goodbye.
[Turns left]: Hi, I'd like to work for you."
That is honestly brilliant.
This is so much better than the actual movie! You should start giving Disney advice on how to make good movies like this more often. Heck, just go on and write the full-on script! Why hasn't Disney hired you already??
I really love your version, it's heartwarming and actually inspiring......kinda makes me weep a little. I still love both the original and this one, but I think the evil banker, the wolf, and the climax is as you said "unnecessary"
I am LOVING these videos keep it up!
This is BRILLIANT!!!! my family and I all saw your Mary Poppins Returns review last night and all loved it! This rewrite is SUPER creative! I love how you add emotional roots and weight, and thoughtfulness, and actual magic creativity!! I LOVE the star idea and jumping through books!! This was absolutely fantastic!!
"THERE! I FIXED THE MOVIE!" That was beautiful, man! 8*)
;u;
AAAAAA I want this!! Why can't they put effort anymore into the movies? This would've been practically perfect!
Personally, I think a prequel showing how Bert and Mary met would be interesting to see. Maybe in it we could see Burt’s relationship with his parents specifically with his father and maybe Mary Poppins being his nanny was the kind of thing he needed to give him that happy go lucky personality he has in the first film.
Idk why I remembered this but do you guys remember the Mary Poppins knock off Nanny Mcfee?
Clearly, the person you need is Nanny McPhee.
...but besides that, not too bad.
Honestly, there are quite a few one-off shows that could use rewrites.
Is it bad that Critic's version, or Doug's, actually almost made me cry? Like we could have had the star's thing, or have a much more interesting kid character? Or actual consequences? Like, this could have been a better and mature film.
Also, if we're going for the newsies idea, have Michael's co-workers be someone from a Newsies Broadway production. Have someone like Jeremy Jordan or Ben Fankhauser give a cameo as a clever reference, similar to the chimney sweeps in Enchanted
TBH, the 2D-animated chase scene with the wolf, badger, and weasel was my favorite part.
I agree with u as well it's just that Doug loves the original Mary Poppins and that he knows his movie facts and that the chase scene feels like a back to the future chase
but I did love the chase scene as well and the wolf shamus Clyde and the badger and weasel were all my favorite characters.
I like that you simplified the story by just having one child in the movie. Giving the kid more focus though out the film.
That... is.... MUCH BETTER! Please Take notes, Disney!
Wow. That retelling was so good I actually got tears in my eyes at the ending.
I... love that you straight up just made your own fixit, especially for this film. Can't wait to see more. ☺️
I want this to be the real Marry Poppins sequel. Awesome job.
I LOVE the ideas for Cover is Not the Book, Turning Turtle, and Trip a Little Light!! Those sound so much more fun and magical than the real movie did!
I'm digging this... Reminds me of Star Wars Theory's older alternate reality vids.
I loved your version it made me cry.
This is amazing! Doug, you're a genius!
That first argument got me tearing up a little honestly, but then I'm a lil biased with a mum who left
"[they're] too angry to have me around, I only make things worse" is a feel I've had so many times
.... Disney, THIS is how you make a movie that works!
Please review Barnyard (2006) please.

I would love this version do much 🧡 I got a little choked up when you talked about the emotional scenes 😢
