lol that's because most of the time they're tragic messed up events turned into something sweet and innocent. At a point in time in America and europe, they realized how much messed up stuff happened on the way to modern times. They basically purified everything by sweeping stuff under the carpet and turning everything around lol. Holidays, nursery rhymes, history, etc etc.
When I learned about my favorite nursery rhyme "3 blind mice" actual origin. It messed me up. I went down a rabbit hole and basically ruined my whole childhood.

@@Knight-of-Sarcasm I didn't learn that from here. I was watching the history channel years ago. They were talking about a point in time in europe/Americas history. Where they wanted to do a re-branding of sorts. They were putting sugar and spice on everything. To cover up their dark history. Damn near every nursery rhyme, poem, holiday, and Disney story adaptation. Got some messed up sick origin story, a deflection, or is based off something serious. The ginger bread man, humpty dumpty, Thanksgiving, the tea party, friday the 13th, the x-men, burr rabbit, Pocahontas, little indians, etc etc. Don't go to far, you'll mess up your childhood like me lol. It's all a lie!!!!

Another fun fact: Jane and Michael's reactions when Mary Poppins pull things out of her bag are real. The young actors were totally surprised.
Fun fact. The song "Beautiful Briney Sea" from the 1971 film "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (or as my late Grandad called it 'Bed Knobs and Bobcocks") was originally meant to be in "Mary Poppins" but was cut, since the Sherman Brothers wrote the soundtrack for both Movies. The bath scene in "Mary Poppins Returns" is a tribute to this. David Tomlinson (Mr Brown) was also in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" as 'Professor' Emelius Browne.
Speaking of, who wants to see a "Messed Up Origins" on "Bedknobs and Broomsticks?" The plot to both books and the Movie are actually totally different.
Well yes, they were surprised when they saw the scene in the movie because they didn’t understand what they were filming, they were just acting as they were told. They weren’t surprised on set. Just to clarify!
@@RD0204 I rather like the book for this (or should I say books?) but both the movie and the books are excellent. I own the books, but all my VHS Disney movies were given to a children's lending library that was being started for a neighborhood a few miles away so they could enjoy it. My VHS player had died and I had already started collecting the DVDs. B&B I checked out of the library often at this point. Disney+ has been a huge difference in my life on having the chance to see old Disney movies sans SotS. (Btw, that one is on YT if anyone is interested in seeing a very bad movie about a horrible subject and a very stereotyped concept. It's something I would share with my kids (16, 23) only as a learning experience on Jim Crow and segregation, not entertainment. Sorry for the side topic there)
I rather like the book Emelius the best of the two despite liking David. I HATE the deleted scenes version where someone else speaks the edited lines. Couldn't they have gotten a better voice actor?

I felt the same when I saw the documentary.
While or is sad I do think you have to undratand just how horrible she treated everyone connected to the filming. I can’t get passed how one of the staff told how verbaly abusive she could be, so it’s not just them not liking her for being upset about the integrity of her work. She went far beyond that and directed her anger at people who weren’t actually in charge of making these decisions.
I don’t feel so bad after learning how she treated her son.

Fun fact! One of Travers' publishers was Peter Llewellyn Davies, who was one of the inspirations for "Peter Pan". He once met the elderly Alice Pleasance Liddell-Hargreaves, who is the inspiration for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". So apparently Mary Poppins has connections to Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland.

I guess since I wasn't paying attention to her she jumped on me, bitch slapped me, and took my necklace under the bed where I couldn't reach it. The next day I brought home some chicken and was determined not to share. So she went under the bed and retrieved the necklace and sat in front of me expectantly with the necklace dangling from her teeth. I gave her some chicken and I got back my necklace. I was bitch slapped and bribed by a cat. That cat scared the shit out of me.

@@LucyLioness100 Further explained from where Alyssa is coming from, I can explain the biggest difference that isn't exactly a spoiler to the plot that folks like Dom Noble and similar channels haven't outed already: there's two murders, and one of them is Roger's.
PL Travers was a complicated person to say the least; writing was her way of coping with her traumatic childhood so I can understand why she was so protective about her character's portrayal on the big screen but it doesn't excuse her behaviour or lying to her adoptive son about how he was adopted and had a twin brother.
Also I'm glad you brought up Saving Mr Banks, it's a really good movie. One of the best scenes for me was when Walt goes to London to see Travers to convince her to finish the movie while discussing their respective fathers which led to this wonderful quote: "that's what storytellers do, we restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again."

Funnily enough, Mary actually teaches a similar lesson to Jane and Michael about their bad behavior in the original play. She notices the children are often angry, but when talking to them doesn't work, she sets off a nightmarish scene after leaving the room. One by one, their toys come to life--as tall as adults, telling them it's their version of the nursery--explaining to them how losing your temper can hurt those around you, with the toys often being victims of their tantrums. The children are even put on trial where they are found guilty, and are threatened to never return to their safe nursery again. But after trying to hide under the bedsheets, Mary Poppins walks in and everything is back to normal. The really sad thing is that the song, "Temper Temper", is actually incredible, but since children in the audience found the scene too disturbing, it was taken out of future production. I'm so grateful I got to see it.

Did you know P. L. Travers was actually a folklorist and mythologer? She wrote some great stuff on those topics-I particularly recommend her book "About the Sleeping Beauty," if you're interested! :-)
It takes a while to start making decent money as a UA-camr. Jon had to decide to take his channel in this direction, learn how to make high quality content, and build a loyal fan base. Also, note how popular this genre of YT videos are, and how many similar channels outright rip off good creators like Jon. They only do this because these types of videos get views, and they're too lazy to do the actual work. So you'll have to make sure you stand out enough to get a respectable number of followers. Jon stands out because of his integrity and his style. But DON'T copy him. You need to be yourself, don't copy someone else who has been successful. Jon is successful because he's authentic. Don't sell your soul to the almighty dollar.
I'm not trying to discourage you from doing this, just letting you know what the reality is. I say go for it, but don't make $$$ your goal. You are more likely to burnout and fail if you set out to make money, because the money doesn't start coming in for at least a year from what I've heard other content creators say. Do it because it's fun, and enjoy the money when it comes.
Leave those people behind and find people with common interests.

They leave a hint of that in the movie, when Mary Poppins insists that a respectable nanny like her would never win a horse race while riding a carousel horse.
I've read a WMG, though, that suggests that back in that time period, if the kids would be seen as "making up stories," it would be as bad as lying, so nothing good would have come from them talking about it.
Without getting too much into it, I had a very unconventional childhood and Mary Poppins, the movie and the books, we’re a huge comfort to me. I had an aunt who introduced me to the books and looked a lot like Julie Andrews and acted a bit like Mary Poppins, she was very graceful and a bit snooty lol. I was convinced she was secretly Mary Poppins and it got to the point when I was 8 that she took me to Disneyland to meet Mary Poppins so she could prove that she wasn’t her lol.

I love how the saving Mr. Banks is much like it’s own version of a messed up origins. Backstory goes a long way, even people that worked with the author had that “oh” moment. I like that I get those moments all the time with your videos though!
On the DVD of The Princess Diaries 2 there's an bonus feature in which Dame Julie Andrews reprises her role as Mary Poppins. She's with two kids looking at some chalk drawings. One drawing is of a cat. One of the kids asks Mary Poppins a question about the cat in the picture. Mary Poppins responds by telling the kids a story about a cat who gets the best of a king.
The song Feed The Birds always brings a tear to my eyes. It was Walt Disney's favorite song. He would often request that the Sherman Brothers play it for him.

I watched Saving Mr Banks (the movie Jon mentioned at the start) with my grandma when I was younger, she accidentally put on Saving Private Ryan and we found that out too late
Julie Andrews was simply one of the most stunningly beautiful women in the world back then, with a delightful voice and accent. Hell, at over 80 years old, she’s still a true dame, so amazingly elegant. It’s unbelievable someone like that can exist in real life.

Not only is Feed The Birds an iconic song in it's own right but it was also Walt Disney's favorite song. He'd have the Sherman Brothers sing it for him every Friday. All he'd have to say is "Sing it" or just stare longingly out the window.
Hearing the Sherman Brothers share the story is truly one of the sweetest. The brothers even played the song after Walt passed away and you can see the friendship in their eyes when telling that memory

The most bizarre part of the book I remember is in the zoo chapter. Mary gets into a zen state and starts chanting. She sings that the rabbits eat the grass and the hyenas eat the rabbits and the lions eat the hyenas and we all eat someone else and then we die and the grass eats us so its all a cycle, a circle, and forever. When I first read that I thought it was a strange thing to put in a children's story.

I used to love Mary Poppins and compare her to my grandma. After hearing the inspiration for her, it’s actually more accurate than I realized. Not gonna lie, it made me tear up

When you think about it, being British means Mary Poppins would have gone to Hogwarts. With her personality, her sense of self worth and her tendency to use her cunning ways or magic to get what she wants, Mary Poppins would most likely have been a Slytherin. The book also suggested that she has been around for a really long time. Possibly long enough to have been a student of Salazar Slytherin himself.
Well not quite seeing as Harry Potter and marry Poppins are not only placed in different universes but Harry Potter as a book was created long after Mary Poppins and seeing as Mary Poppins has been around long (though we don’t quite know how long) she might not have gone their because she was too old.

Barley water was an actual thing. It's was considered something like Vitamin Water, but more gross. You would drink it as a health tonic more than for fun. It probably did smell like a watered-down beer, though.

Mary Poppins is, and will always be my all-time favorite Disney movie. In my lifetime I have watched hundreds upon hundreds of times and it never gets old.
I may well agree as far as their live action movies are concerned.

Wow that ending really hit me. I honestly feel for both Travers and the people working on the movie because they should be treated with respect but they also should've stuck to Travers vision since it was her story and meant a lot to her.
If you're doing a series highlighting the differences in nostalgic stuff, I would suggest Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The film is almost entirely different from the book, Dick Van Dyke was in it, and Hushabye Mountain is definitely one of my favorite lullabies.

For even more messed up origins, you should find the original version of the compass chapter with all the racial stereotypes! Later editions of the book eliminated them but it wasn't difficult to find it
I read that when I was nine or ten and didn't really think too too much of it as far as the stereotypes being bad, because I was used to watching Chuck Jones and other cartoons where racial stereotypes were very common (if someone got hit on the head with something flat it would turn him Chinese and he would start doing the Oriental riff) and you were expected to laugh at them. In retrospect, the stereotypes that were in the original version of the book were pretty bad, especially the mandarin, who did not talk in a tinky tinky dialect, but did use lots of unnecessary Chinese style talk about being unworthy, etc., and the black lady and her husband, who talked in a painfully obvious dialect and offered watermelon. The truly shocking part was them all swooping down on Michael with weapons drawn. The kid's what, six, and they're going to use deadly force?
Read Mary Poppins at the age of 12. Loved it and so glad that other people are talking about it too! I actually got to know the books in a really fun way.
One evening I found one of the Mary Poppins books on my desk. I later asked my mother if she had put it there and she said: "No I didn't. Mary Poppins did!" I then asked if she was Mary and she looked at me with a mischievous glint in her eye and said "Yes! Yes I am!"
Oh, my goodness. The song about the Bird Woman. I start to tear up at the very mention of it. She's so devoted and selfless on her mission to feed the birds. What a noble fundraiser she is.😢

I never read the original book, but it sounds like a really fun read. I like reading old children's stories from time to time. It makes for a nice escape from reality to a time of innocence. It's calming and comforting in that way.
I think this was a great story in both version. I understand how it would be difficult to see a large part of your childhood changed and put in a fictional story.
young Mary Poppins should be an animated series. it should have Julie Andrews giving a background narration, "long ago when I was younger..."
I think Mary Poppins works because she's a mystery, so she doesn't need a backstory.

Are we going to ignore the ending of the twins chapter? Cuz that starlings depression made me very very sad for some reason I don't know why, honestly this book felt like a fever dream but then I started reading the second one and it felt even more like a wild fever dream and then I never finished it and I kind of want to go back and read the rest of the series even though it's complete and total chaos
I first started learning about Mary Poppins from "Saving Mr. Banks" and I literally rewatched Mary Poppins that night. Me and my family were up to 1 bit we didn't care. So glad to l learn more from this video.
Guess that Cow story along with her bag being bigger on the inside lends more credence to the theory that Mary Poppins is a Time Lord from Gallifrey.
I like the theory that she's a witch that is constantly getting in trouble with the Ministry of Magic for showing magic to muggles.
However it is also hinted at in the movie that she is also obsessed with looking at herself as well when she takes down the small mirror and replaces it with one from her bag and says I much prefer to see all of my face at the same time

She wasn't only horrible to the filmmakers.. I've read that her child(ren) said that she wouldn't be missed when she died.

Saving mr banks was painful for me as a creator, I felt for the writer because disney didnt have to hound her so much, so yes she may have been unkind to the other people on the team, but disney was not much better towards her. wanting to change literally everything in her story to fit his wants just like every other movie he made, im kind of glad she pushed back. Im sorry she gave the song writers and other people on the project ptsd though

P.L. Travers did not want to sell out (I believe that was her way of viewing, but don’t quote me on that). She ultimately hated the film so much; especially the musical moments
Feed the Birds is my favorite song from that movie and makes me cry every time. I don’t know why, either. It’s probably a Julie Andrew’s thing.
Hi Jon, Just had to comment about this post. I am 68 years old and I grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1966, Miss Travers came to our elementary school and talked about her book at an assembly. She had the 5 and 6 year olds on stage with her but the rest of us were in the audience. 🥰
Fun fact, Walt Disney wanted Julie Andrew to play Mary Poppins he put everything on hold till she wasn't pregnant because when he went to her she was in her early trimester.
When I first heard that the original books were nothing like the movie I went back and read them all and they really were fantastic. The movie is wonderful in its own way, but you really end up having to see them as completely different stories.

I live in the town the author of Mary Poppins grew up in (Maryborough, QLD, Australia) and each year we have this huge festival and it’s pretty cool. We also have Mary Poppins statues, and other memorabilia scattered around the town centre
there's also a statue of her here in Bowral, Southern Highlands, NSW. where she & her mother & sister moved to when she was 8yrs old
Roald Dahl who wrote Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and other books and hated the Willy Wonka movie like Mrs Travers hated Mary Poppins (they were friends) saw the Poppins movie and said he was disappointed but conflicted. He made it clear that he didn't like that it had animation (also similar to Mrs Travers).
He also hated the original Witches movie.

I was about 5 when I saw this movie and I remember being disappointed when I found out that I couldn't fly away with my umbrella like Mary Poppins. The worse part was with a good gust of wind I thought I almost did it but....not quite.

Love the t-shirt. Pamela Trevor's was a horrible human being. Watched a documentary on her, she adopted her son who was a twin but knew and said no I only want the best one. Then was neglectful and abusive towards him he eventually found his twin and his brothers family where very fond of him. Heartbreaking. She was a cruel woman. I'm glad Disney changed Mary Poppins into the version we all grew up with. I can't remember if it was the BBC or channel 4 both English did the documentary but it was very interesting but very sad.
She might have been a horrible mother figure, but Disney probably should have just dropped making the Mary Poppins film when Travers refused the first time. Disney spent decades trying to get her approval to make the movie, and every time, she said no and only ended up agreeing when Disney said she'd get script approval of the project, which obviously didn't happen. Disney must've known for a while that Travers was a difficult person after her constantly refusing him. He could have avoided dealing with her if he had just left it alone. Sure, Travers was bitter towards the creative team, but Disney was the one who spent decades approaching her. He was literally asking for it.
@@ThePrincessCH he wanted to keep his promise to his children, tho if they'd known what kind of person she was, they'd never have asked him to make that promise. I mean sure they could have just waited till she died but that could take some time and guess Disney was determined to make it.

I’ve never been able to explain it but Feed The Birds always makes me cry. Even just the music with no words. There’s something beautifully haunting about it.

As a writer myself I understand the protectiveness involved. Diana Wynne Jones was slightly more gracious than Travers when Ghibli ruined her book. You'd need at least an hour to cover the differences between the book and anime, though. I'd avoid that one if I were you.
I agree and not every book needs be retold in a movie adaptation but she did like Miyazaki take on her book about Sophie and Howl, that’s the big difference. 🤷🏽♀️ I would use Tove Jansson or Astrid Lindgren in this case, she did say no which was accepted by the director, and didn’t want Pippi to a Ghibli work and instead we got Kiki which partly based in Sthlm,

Yeah the thing about “ruining” a book is that the book is still there to be read afterwards. It’s still the same good work that we remember. Just because he movie is different doesn’t mean it’s bad either. Now we just have two wonderful and captivating stories based on the same premis. The fact that the authors of both Howel’s Moving Castle, Princesse Diaries, and The Black Cauldron seem to actually like their movie adaptions seem to me to mean that you are being just a little over dramatic.

Mary Poppins was the first movie I ever saw at a movie theater. I literally had a temper tantrum for the Mary Poppins paper doll set that was being sold at the concession stand. My poor older brother had to call my parents to get permission to buy one. I also had the Mary Poppins soundtrack, a Mary Poppins doll, a Mary Poppins storybook, and a Mary Poppins hat from Disneyland. 1965 was a great year for six year old me.😉 ☔

I live in Maryborough where Travers was born. Great museum and walking lights are in the shape of Mary Poppins. There is so much more things to see.

Walt Disney's favorite song was Feed the Birds. As I got older the movie began to bother me. She takes these kids out on outrageous adventures, and then constantly calls them liars. I get telling someone you had a floating tea party is too fantastic for them to believe, but there's a better way than calling them liars. Tell them that sharing the stories ruins the magic or that adults have trouble believing in magic. Then they won't feel like they have to repress everything because they are horrible lying brats.
I always loved Mary as a character when I was a kid, because she said bless you to Andrew when he sneezed. iconic.

I can't recall which nation it was, but I recall hearing a teacher telling us kids at school that there were nations that barred Mary Poppins because they thought she was a witch.

Just an FYI - (regarding the comment you made at 13:17) Marjorie Bennett died 23 years after the release of Mary Poppins so she *almost* made it the 25 years that you spoke of. ;-) I love this video because it showcases the movie *”Saving Mr. Banks”* which was an *EXCELLENT* movie to watch.
Well there's one thing you didn't mention. During the long process of trying to get the rights to release this movie and some of the songs that they originally planned for this movie Disney's team worked into another movie called Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I heard that there was more planned for the movie Mary Poppins but got cut out due to time restraint. Apparently the song The Beautiful Briny was originally planned to be included in the Mary Poppins movie but was cut out.
